I figure it's inevitable that I'll buy a PS5, but I'm in no hurry. And it's not what most people are saying, "The PS5 has no games!" It's just that I feel satisfied with my Switch and PS4; just don't feel ready for a new system yet. But here's what might make some Nintendo Life readers shriek in horror... I had very little excitement for the Switch when it released other than if I didn't upgrade, I'd have zero access to new Nintendo games (particularly Splatoon 2). But if I could have chosen between the Switch or some alternate reality where the Wii U got two more years of game releases, I would have gone with the alternate reality.
I was a little hesitant over the return of FMV games, but I have found myself really enjoying many of them. I've bought all of Wales Interactive games, except Five Dates and I've loved them all except I Saw Black Clouds. I'm glad to see this looks more along the lines of The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker in that it's more of an interview style game rather than a movie. Not only has there not been many of those, but I think they have better replay value.
@TheWingedAvenger To be fair, Twilight Princess was released for three consoles in a row. If you haven't played it, that's more a you problem. And Mario is getting beat like a dead horse on Switch.
Strange... No recent updates to their FaceBook page or e-mails sent out. At this point I'm just keeping my pre-orders up for the LOLs of watching this car crash.
I'd be all for Nintendo making a futuristic fantasy game, but I'd much rather it be in the form of a new franchise rather than retrofitting Zelda into the role. That would allow the designers more freedom rather than worrying what needs to be in the game to make it "Zelda-esque."
@Anti-Matter I partly agree with you, in that I think they should release it for console, but not as part of an official Mario Kart. I'd buy it as a port, just modified for normal controls. But as a mobile cross over, I think it would inherently be seen as a lesser game.
Whether that's fair or not, that would be the perception. And since it's free to play on phone, I'm not sure how to monetize it on Switch so neither group of players feels cheated or abused. Actually, now that I think about it, that could be such a mine field, that might be why it never happens.
@ AW1Long I'd rather their console games be released in finished form rather than drip fed content after release.
@JustMonika I'll agree with you on the Zelda part. I played two of them and they were... OK. Not interesting enough for me to finish. I haven't tried Cyberpunk 2077 but I've heard it's been patched up into a pretty decent game, even if the story is kind of meh. I might give it a try, but not until I have a PS5, and who knows when that will be.
Get ready for half the characters being Fire Emblem! Fortunately, this is all based on internet speculation, but of course MK8 did let in a few non-Mario characters via the DLC on the Wii U. While massive cross overs can be fun as an occassional gag, if everything gets that treatment, nothing feels unique. I think they should back off and keep Karting in the Mario universe. Thanks to Odyssey, there's plenty of new environments and characters without digging into other franchises.
He may not be able to admit this working for Nintendo Life, but I really would not expect him to honestly enjoy Pokemon, being an adult playing it for the first time. Now, I'm not bagging on any adults that do enjoy Pokemon, but I suspect many that do are benefiting from nostalgia because they played them as kids. For myself, I played my first Pokemon game when I was 38 due to one of my friends pressuring me to do so. To be honest, it was fun... But not that fun. I enjoyed the combat system and seeing what Pokemon I could catch and what they'd evolve into. But the lack of challenge and the mind numbingly dumb dialog kept me from really loving it. At the same time, I was playing SMT: Strange Journey, and compared to that, Pokemon just didn't hold my attention. So back to the author of this article, I'm assuming since he writes for NL, he's probably played several of the excellent RPGs made for Nintendo's systems. So without nostalgia to help boost his enjoyment, I suspect he'll find Pokemon to be a shallow experience. Although I doubt he'll admit that because, again, he works for NL.
If a new Mario Kart is in development, I wonder what system it is for? As I Wii U owner, I wasn't too happy about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe because I figured it would check the Switch's box for one Mario Kart per system. And nothing has really changed my mind on that. Considering that franchise is used to sell systems, I doubt they would waste an entry on a console that's passed the five year mark. Of course I wasn't expecting the Switch to get two installments of Splatoon so I guess anything is possible.
I'm not even sure who this is supposed to offend, Alex Jones fans or his critics. I don't know if the game holds any promise, but the trailer was humorous in a silly kind of way.
For the love of god, stop begging for ports! I wouldn't mind sequels to a few of these, but not ports. And Wii Sports... Really? When that got ported to the Wii U, it was clear the magic was already gone.
There are times I'm willing to go against the collective "wisdom" and try a bad game. For example, I saw all the scathing reviews for Devil's Third, but when I'd watch the footage, it looked fun. So I bought it and ended up loving it (but I'll admit, the game is a graphical mess). So when the negative reviews came out for Balan Wonderworld, I initially tried to keep an open mind. But watching play through videos, I just couldn't stop thinking, "Wow, this game looks dreadful!" I never did play it, but I can't imagine how I could enjoy something that looks so awful.
@RandomNPC For the most part, I don't try to get inside Nintendo's head. I don't think my mind could withstand the distorted reality. But I am going to rain on one of your hopes...
I can't see them adding native voice chat. As basic as that is, Nintendo seems weirdly stubborn in not getting with the times as far as online games are concerned.
I think the idea of a "canon" for a series like Sonic is just weird. The games all amount to "Eggman is going to use <insert MacGuffin> to rule the world" Spin attack to victory.
And I'm not dunking on Sonic, I like some of the games. But the idea of arguing over what is the grand story arc of the Sonic Universe just leaves me asking, why?
This game launching is what will finally convince me to restart my Nintendo Online subscription. It was really rare that I played anything online other than Splatoon 2. And considering I still have the original on Wii U, even at $20, keeping the subscription going didn't seem worth it.
I've got this game and I've got to say, I'm surprised how challenging it is. Not infuriatingly hard, I have some racing games where I've NEVER won a single race (TT: Isle of Man for example). But being branded with a toy line, I thought Hot Wheels was going to be a cake walk. But most races take me a few tries to win. Overall, it's a really good racing game that doesn't get too whacky with the whole toy element. I guess that's not too much of a surprise considering Milestone seems to specialize in racing games. I can't think of anything they published that isn't racing. But I remember wanting to get the Hot Wheels games for the previous Nintendo Consoles (which were from major publishers) the the reviews were always terrible.
A note on the DLC: Yes, this game is absolutely riddled with DLC. But to be fair, if you're a non-DLC buying cheapskate like me, I think this game has plenty of content and cars to be unlocked through gameplay without spending any extra money. I don't think this is a case of only getting half a game for them to sell you the other half later. That said, be prepared to have Batman paid DLC waved in your face constantly.
Shin Megami Tensei... Blasphemy the Game! I remember one time describing the plot of SMT IV to one of my coworkers, but another guy who takes his religion very seriously was also in the room and he looked at me like God was about to strike me dead.
And as far as the controversy of them including an Amazon link to GTA Trilogy; they are giving you fair warning of the state of the games, and I don't know if this applies evenly to the Switch port, but I've heard patches are rolling out that fix the games. They probably will become worth playing for people who are interested (I personally have no interest in them).
My top 2 was not a surprise. Monster Hunter Rise as number one, because of course it was, and SMTV as number two catching up fast. But the number three surprised me... Little Dragon Cafe. It's not particularly good or deep, but it's a relaxing way to kill time. I guess I logged more hours on that game than I realized.
@Ziondood I can't speak for the other two, but I honestly enjoyed Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. It was a fun 2D platformer and the cut scenes were hilarious.
@NoctaireSombras Being about to patch games after launch is one of these things that really is a good thing, but there's companies clearly abusing it (or more like abusing their customers) by making it part of their business model. Particularly with large open world games, I think it's unrealistic to think every bug can be caught by a team of testers. Essentially, the thousands of people playing the game in the first week or two become the final game testers and I can live with that. But there's a big difference between working out some random bugs and releasing games that are literally not finished. I'm kind of surprised anyone still buys EA games in their first week anymore.
One game that only recently came out that's short (I've heard about three hours) that I'm really enjoying is Paradise Lost. I haven't finished it yet, so I can't say it's "one of the best" until I see the ending. But so far, it's a fascinating and eerie exploration game wandering around an abandoned city sized underground bunker from the end of a very different alternative history Europe where WWII lasted 20 years and ended in nuclear apocalypse. So far, it's been amazing, but I must say, it's so linear, there won't be any replayability.
I dug into the list so fast, I missed "as rated by you." So when I saw Mario 3D World as #2, I was like, "What?! This is some fanboy BS!" Don't get me wrong, it's a fine game, but it's nothing that special. But of course, using fan ratings, anything with Mario in the name will score unreasonably high.
I don't get the BOTW comparisons. It has a different art style, the trailer didn't show anything implying BOTW style crafting, combat or gliding. So is anything that shows a big world now "BOTW style?" (as if that game invented large gaming worlds)
If there's any Nintendo game this reminds me of as far as visual style, it would be Xenoblade Chronicles X. Almost realistic, but with saturated colors and fantastic landscapes.
Imagine being an artist and you've just finished a painting. And you get swarmed by people, "OMG, this isn't a Picasso! Why didn't he make a Picasso? I'm just going to be angry online until we get a new Picasso!" F-Zero fans, that's what you sound like.
Interesting. I keep up with homebrew scene for the Atari 7800 (their late 80's machine) and about ten years ago, somebody made a port of Moon Cresta for that console. This Nintendo Switch game looks, well... Considerably better. But you can definitely tell they're based on the same source.
To me, it seemed like Smash moved away from it's original theme: cute, innocent characters beating each other senseless. I did think it was cool that they added Isabella, but Ultimate got A LOT of human soldiers and martial artists. I think adding people like Street Fighter and Fire Emblem characters kind of spoils the joke at the heart of Smash. I would have much rather had new characters like Rayman, Bubsy, Jack Frost (for an adorable Persona tie in), and Lappy from Astral Chain.
I've got this game on PS4 and really tried to love it, but just couldn't. The only character who's story interested me at all was the one from World War 2. The RTS portions are OK, but nothing great. The graphics are beautiful though.
@Ryan_Again One thing to keep in mind is Japan doesn't really have the same understanding of angels and demons that western culture has. From the anime I've watched, I get that Japan's idea of a demon is less "agent of evil working to destroy mankind" and closer to the mythological creatures of ancient Greece. Supernatural, amoral, no real agenda for humanity, but inherently dangerous just by their nature. So while a game like SMT might look really blasphemous to westerners, I don't think that was the intention of its developers.
Wow, I had to break out my copy of Wii Sports after this. I didn't even know about Matt's Gym. I just wasn't that into Wii Sports and while I did log some time on the main events, I never checked out the training. So when he's showing the gym, I kept thinking, "Never mind the details, I don't remember this at all!"
You wander around a beach flipping horseshoe crabs. Hardly a deep experience or a landmark in gaming, but for $1, it's oddly relaxing. Also, there's a certain charm to the developer's love for an unlovable, ugly sea creature.
@WiiHawk It's a tragedy the didn't make a Trauma Center for the Wii U. A game like that would have been the perfect use for the game pad. Of course it would have sold terrible, because... Wii U. I don't think it has as much potential on the Switch (but I'd probably still buy it).
It's nice to see ExciteBots get some love. That was one of my favorite games on Wii, but it seems a lot of people missed it. That said, the original plays great and I wouldn't buy it again just for a graphics upgrade. I'd be all in for a new installment for the Excite series.
Probably the only game I had on Wii that I'd buy again if it was ported to Switch is Cursed Mountain. I almost loved that game, but it was hampered by sloppy motion controls and some design flaws. If they could work out the bugs, I'd love to give it another try.
Hopefully, my copy will arrive tomorrow. I can't wait! I've actually passed on a few RPG's I've wanted (Ys IX, Nocturne for example) because I knew once SMTV came out, they'd end up on the back burner anyway.

Re: Horseshoe Crab Rescue!
You wander around a beach flipping horseshoe crabs. Hardly a deep experience or a landmark in gaming, but for $1, it's oddly relaxing. Also, there's a certain charm to the developer's love for an unlovable, ugly sea creature.
Re: Feature: 14 Wii Games That Deserve Switch Ports
@WiiHawk It's a tragedy the didn't make a Trauma Center for the Wii U. A game like that would have been the perfect use for the game pad. Of course it would have sold terrible, because... Wii U. I don't think it has as much potential on the Switch (but I'd probably still buy it).
Re: Feature: 14 Wii Games That Deserve Switch Ports
It's nice to see ExciteBots get some love. That was one of my favorite games on Wii, but it seems a lot of people missed it. That said, the original plays great and I wouldn't buy it again just for a graphics upgrade. I'd be all in for a new installment for the Excite series.
Probably the only game I had on Wii that I'd buy again if it was ported to Switch is Cursed Mountain. I almost loved that game, but it was hampered by sloppy motion controls and some design flaws. If they could work out the bugs, I'd love to give it another try.
Re: Shin Megami Tensei V Outshines Other Popular JRPGs At UK Retail
Hopefully, my copy will arrive tomorrow. I can't wait! I've actually passed on a few RPG's I've wanted (Ys IX, Nocturne for example) because I knew once SMTV came out, they'd end up on the back burner anyway.
