I bought this game for the PS4. I'm usually not one to complain about pricing, but it was pretty slim or content on initial full price release and the DLC is rather expensive. It's a good game, but I think SNK went a little crazy with their monetization. Going forward, I'll be wary about buying another fighter from them because it feels like Samurai Shakedown.
I'm glad it's coming out this year. After playing IV and Apocalypse (which I only finished in 2019), I needed a break from SMT. But at this point, I'm ready for another go.
Hmm... Why do the graphics look so basic? This looks like what you get when they do an HD upgrade (higher resolution but absolutely nothing else; Legend of Kay for example) of a PS2 or GameCube game.
Several EA games released a motherlode of information about how the train wreck came to be. Of course I'm talking about Anthem and ME: Andromeda. It would be interesting to see the same kind of postmortem on Balan. I had high hopes for the game, and now I'm just wondering, how did it get to this state?!
@Zidentia I wonder what you think was wasted potential with the Wii. I'm not knocking the system, I quite like the Wii. But with it's huge library with many great games that make use of the motion controls in many different ways, I think the Wii's potential was completely fulfilled. Now the Wii U, that was wasted potential. Even Nintendo themselves quickly gave up trying to do anything creative with the Wii U's unique hardware.
From a programming perspective, it's impressive. But from an "I want to play a fun game" perspective, I'm not sure why you'd want this. 3D on the DS was pretty ugly. Of course the most important perspective is that of Nintendo, who I'm sure is staring down the aim sight of their cease and desist cannon as we speak.
I'll replay action games. For example, Devil's Third which takes about 6-8 hours (depending how many dozen times I'm killed by each boss), I played through three times. But JRPG's? Even though I'd like to see the different branching stories, I'd NEVER replay them because of how long they take. One caveat, since they do take me so long to play through (often three years), after I beat them, I'll often replay just the beginning because by that time, I can barely remember how the story began.
@Tendogamerxxx Boo! Don't be such a hater! Although I can agree with you on the ridiculousness of how hard Sega has milked Sonic for all he's worth. After Forces, I did think that they should park the franchise for five years to give Sonic Team time to think about what they've done. And to come up with a solid plan for their next game rather than just going crazy with any idea that pops into their demented little mind (see my post above for more of how I feel). So I think Sonic would benefit from making less appearances, but I don't want him to totally go away.
I'm probably in the extreme minority here, but I'd love a Lost World 2. But with more focused level design. That is to say just go with the full 3D design of that game (and add a little polish) but drop the 2D, sliding board levels, parkour mechanics and anything else that stood out as a distraction from the core game. That Lost World could have been great but they tried to do too many things and ended up not doing any of them as good as they could have.
I think part of the reason this game has people extra upset is because it's a port of a game that didn't originally have Amiibo. So there's the question why should the port add new paywalls that didn't previously exist. There implementation has really varied in different games. There's some where I really don't think you're missing out on much if you don't buy the Amiibo; such as Super Mario Odyssey and Smash. A few like the original Splatoon and Mario Party 10 essentially had whole modes locked behind the Amiibo (closest thing to DLC). Then AC Amiibo Festival was a full blown toys to life game like Skylanders where if you're not willing to buy the toys, you really shouldn't buy the game.
To get the most enjoyment out of this game, I'd recommend NOT making video game characters or celebrities. Make Mii's based on your friends or people you know. He's a scenario that played out on my 3DS (all based on people I hang out with): Rick, the old bar owner, was getting all in love with Mike the farmer; meanwhile Peter, my raging alcoholic friend was peering through the window jealous because he wants to be Rick's best friend. The game is hilarious if you base your characters on real people. Just know that it gives no consideration to gender, which adds to the humor.
When I was in Japan at the end on 2019, I saw there was a Jake Hunter game, Prism of Eyes on Switch. I'm starting to lose hope at this point, but I was hoping they'd localize it for the west.
OK, I figured it's not hard. I just never bothered with any kind of hacking on my Nintendo devices. And I don't mean "hacking" in the illegal sense, I just mean anything that goes beyond the vanilla usage of the hardware in the way Nintendo originally intended.
@nessisonett I wonder what the process is to get games into it? What could be cool, although prohibitively expensive for such a retro device, would be if it had a dock with a disc drive where you could load games from the disc into the handheld's onboard memory to take on the go. Of course you still have the issue of how to handle games designed around the Wiimotes.
@6thHorizon Fragmenting a absolutely massive user base into two would hardly be an issue. I hate to keep bringing up Activision and COD, but they "fragment" their user base every single year. Yet if you log into COD online, it's not like you can't find tons of people to play with even on the older games.
@BrintaPap Racing and open world are a bad combination. I've always loved skiing and snowboarding games, which are kind of like racing. And then I bought Steep. Skiing and snow boarding in a huge and beautiful open world to explore. <Say this in Bubsy's voice> What could possible go wrong? Well, without carefully crafted tracks, it was painfully boring. I supposed it would be fine battle mode, but since matches only last a few minutes, there's not much point in having a huge world.
@Inc Yes, but the people that already own MK8D aren't spending more money on the game. If they added paid DLC, they're spending a lot of money on development (of course not nearly as much as a full, new game, but still a lot), and they can only charge a fraction of the price. Replacing one game with another doesn't cancel out profits from the first game, it allows them to charge $60 again, not just from new buyers, but most of they ones that have MK8 would come back. This is the whole business model of COD. Obviously, I don't want MK to be annualized like COD, but it's now been more than four years.
@duffmmann I am willing to move on from the Wii U. In fact, I'm so ready to move on from the Wii U, I don't buy Wii U ports.
I know the Wii U was such a failure, it doesn't make a lot of business sense to give the owners of that machine much consideration. That said, adding DLC would be yet another slap in the face. If they added 16 tracks (same number that got added to the Wii U game), I'd have to shell out the $60 plus whatever they charge for the DLC, and in the end, all that is to get half a game. And playing online, since the DLC would only be a fraction of the total tracks, most of the races would be on tracks I've been playing for six years. So for the love of God, just make a new game!
I've always wondered how long old cartridges and the systems that use them will last. I still play my Atari 7800 occasionally. I've had to replace the console once, and one cartridge stopped working. So for a 30+ year old console, not bad. But I also have a bunch of 2600/VCS cartridges (about 40 years old), and several of them no longer work properly. It will be a sad day when it becomes impossible (on a reasonable budget) to play the games I grew up with. Of course that assumes those old consoles die before I do.
With all these DLC characters, the game will soon have a barely adequate roster!
@RudeAnimat0r I get that comparing this game to Smash as far as content isn't fair. However, the stages in Samurai Shodown don't have any unique gameplay interactions. They're essentially just scenery, so adding a few much stages should be pretty easy compared to the effort that goes into each new fighter.
One very simple thing I wish was an option for the Switch to NOT have your physical games display. About 2/3 of my games are physical, but when I want to play one of the downloaded games, everything's a jumbled mess. It was so much nicer when the physical games weren't clogging up the UI and the downloads stayed wherever you put them.
@Shambo I've got Mudrunner on the PS4. I don't think you have to be big on sims to enjoy the game, but you do need patience. The game is SLOW! You have to plod along though bogs, figure out how to get over hills, not get stuck in mud pits and keep your truck within range of trees to attach your winch to. It seems like it should be painfully boring, but it's weirdly enjoyable. As Slowdive said, you kind of just have to play it to understand.
I see people complaining that the frame rate will probably be low, but honestly, when you spend most of the game in creeper gear, I'm not sure low frame rate would really be noticeable.
I love my Wii U and for the last year, was playing it more than my Switch (although Monster Hunter Rise put an end to that). Several years ago, I would have recommended people buy one despite the slow start and limited library because what it did have was awesome. That said, I can't really recommend someone buy one today because they still sell at just about full price and, much to my annoyance, so many of its games have been ported to Switch.
@Mahhayo I didn't realize the creator left, but it makes sense. What really made the original trilogy so great was the relationships between Phoenix and Maya, and Miles and Gumshoe. The other games tried to recapture that, but the back and forth between Apollo and Trucy or Miles and Kay (maybe? she was really forgettable) never came close.
I'm torn. I used to love this series and I was always curious about these retro AAs. That said, after playing through seven of them already, I think the magic is gone. But for anyone new to the series, they're definitely worth checking out.
@Crockin Do you know something the rest of us don't? Not every factory is a sweat shop. I worked in factories to get myself through college and while they weren't fun jobs, I would call them sweat shops.
@Bobb I've noticed Japanese architecture and interior design tends to favor simple, clean design. It tends to look a bit boring but also gives it a timeless look compared to western design. Had this been an American building, it probably would have had avocado green furniture, lava lamps and shag carpet.
I guess it's inevitable that people won't agree because "game dev" is so nonspecific. In the movie industry, it would be like describing someone as "filmmaker" which of course is a word, but you're more likely to hear people introduced with a much more specific title like director, writer, actor, special effects artist, etc. So the exact meaning of filmmaker doesn't matter that much. But back to the games industry, "game dev" really gets used a lot. So when you have someone going to kickstarted saying, "I'm the developer of (insert famous game) so give me money to make a spiritual successor," it would be good to know exactly what they mean by developer.
It's too bad that Sonic Boom is dead. I thought Fire & Ice was actually pretty good. If they released a follow up to that game with the same 2D focused gameplay, I'd be all over it.
I've always thought a Hot Wheels game could be amazing fun, but the reviews always say otherwise. It seems like the perfect concept for a crazy racing game. If they manage to get it right this time, I'd definitely be interested.
I have Japanese Rail Sim for the Switch released by Sonic Powered. Like the 3DS games they released, it used FMV rather than normal CG graphics. I'm not sure why, but none of the usual Amazon partners sell it as an import, I actually bought it in Tokyo. But it does have an English language patch. Not so fun fact, there is a North American release planned, but it's one of the games caught in the black hole that is Dispatch Games and their total inability to get anything actually released.
I have a hard time, no, make that I will never believe a controller based on the N64 design could ever be "the best ever." It was innovative for its time, but there's a reason no one, including Nintendo, made controllers like that again.
How disappointing. I was really excited for this game when it was initially announced. I love mascot platformers, but I like to play a variety of different franchises. Even though I haven't played all the Mario games available on Switch, I'd rather try something else. I was hoping this would be it.
@Steel76 As far as the graphics, I only recently picked up the first game (physical for Wii U). The reason I was so on the fence is because I thought the game's graphics were ugly as sin. Now that I've been playing it for a while... My opinion on the graphics hasn't changed, I'm just not a fan of that retro pixel look. But the gameplay is AWESOME! So I look at the sequel and am pretty ambivalent to it's style, but considering my thoughts on the first game, that's not really a deal breaker.
@Silly_G When I was in Japan, I saw a lot of Z rated games. I'm not sure if that's really what they consider "adult only." The trend I noticed was Z rated games included a lot of our M rated games where you're killing a lot of actual people. So games like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed were Z, while games like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry were rated D. But maybe according to CERO, Call of Duty is adult only due to how murdery it is.
I guess I have simple taste when it comes to pinball. I loved the original Zen pinball games on the 3DS, but as time has gone by, I'm finding their newer stuff to be bloated, overkill design. Also, a lot of their tables I downloaded on the Switch are designed so that a game can really drag out. I've actually gone back to the Wii U and have downloaded a lot of the FarSight pinball games (which are all based on real tables). But when this comes out, I'll give it a look and keep an open mind.
I wish the would have ported this early in the Switch's life. But with it taking me about three years to finish all the previous SMT games I played, I'm not buying this with SMT V coming out in a year. And confession time. I never finished Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers on 3DS. I'd like to beat it because it's a cool game, but good Lord, it's fiendishly difficult!
@DTFaux I think 3rd parties making Amiibo is probably seen as a risky move. While it may not cost a lot to make an Amiibo, they probably cost more than the game itself (physical manufacturing, not development). And if they overshoot production, they end up with a bunch of Amiibo they can't sell which could wipe out their profits. Also, I think the game needs a really dedicated fanbase to ensure the Amiibo sell. I think in that regard, Monster Hunter has it covered more than most.
I'm not surprised this game sold a million copies in its first year. It's Bomberman and there wasn't much else to play early on. But I am surprised it managed to sell another million copies since them. I would have expected this to be one of those games that disappeared down a black hole a few months after it was released.
I'm going to do something crazy here and actually comment on the game. I watched the trailer, and I'm really looking forward to it. I have most, if not all of Wales Interactive's FMV games, and most of them a pretty good. The Complex was especially good, not just as far as it's story, but it had amazing production quality for an FMV game. Hopefully, this one follows suit.
@dluxxx SMT got some love on the 3DS list, but none on this one. I played Devil Survivor 2 and really liked it, but Strange Journey... I just about doused my trousers from how amazing that game was!
These lists are always clogged with Pokemon. I'm thinking that franchise has to be something you had to get into as a kid to appreciate as an adult. I bought Black on the DS as my first (and thus far only) Pokemon game. It was... fine. I enjoyed it somewhat, but if I ranked my DS RPG's best to worst, it would be dead last. The gameplay was fun, but not amazing, and the story was mind numbing.
Arms is a sad case of unrealized potential. I really liked it, but if felt like it wasn't really a finished game. The game mechanics were great, but it's really light on content. Unlike Splatoon, there really wasn't any attempt to built up the world, lore or characters. As much as I'm looking forward to Splatoon 3, I think Arms is the one that really needs a sequel.

Not so fun fact, there is a North American release planned, but it's one of the games caught in the black hole that is Dispatch Games and their total inability to get anything actually released.
Re: Talking Point: Is The N64 Pad Actually The Best Controller Ever?
I have a hard time, no, make that I will never believe a controller based on the N64 design could ever be "the best ever." It was innovative for its time, but there's a reason no one, including Nintendo, made controllers like that again.
Re: Review: Balan Wonderworld - A Charmless, Confusing Fossil From The Creators Of Sonic
How disappointing. I was really excited for this game when it was initially announced. I love mascot platformers, but I like to play a variety of different franchises. Even though I haven't played all the Mario games available on Switch, I'd rather try something else. I was hoping this would be it.
Re: Axiom Verge 2 Is Launching On The Nintendo Switch This Spring
@Steel76 As far as the graphics, I only recently picked up the first game (physical for Wii U). The reason I was so on the fence is because I thought the game's graphics were ugly as sin. Now that I've been playing it for a while... My opinion on the graphics hasn't changed, I'm just not a fan of that retro pixel look. But the gameplay is AWESOME! So I look at the sequel and am pretty ambivalent to it's style, but considering my thoughts on the first game, that's not really a deal breaker.
Re: Team Ninja Says It's "Waiting" For Ryu's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Invite
Re: Zen Studios Announces "Next-Gen" Pinball FX Game For Switch, Introduces New Battle Royale Mode
Re: Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster File Size Revealed
I wish the would have ported this early in the Switch's life. But with it taking me about three years to finish all the previous SMT games I played, I'm not buying this with SMT V coming out in a year. And confession time. I never finished Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers on 3DS. I'd like to beat it because it's a cool game, but good Lord, it's fiendishly difficult!
Re: Video: Check Out This Unboxing Of The Monster Hunter Rise Collector's Edition
Re: Video: This Is What Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Looks Like Running At 8K With Ray Tracing Enabled
So does a big part of the gaming community have the immediate reaction to a game they like, "Cool, but what would it look like on a different system?"
Re: Super Bomberman R Passes Two Million Sales Worldwide
I'm not surprised this game sold a million copies in its first year. It's Bomberman and there wasn't much else to play early on. But I am surprised it managed to sell another million copies since them. I would have expected this to be one of those games that disappeared down a black hole a few months after it was released.
Re: FMV Title I Saw Black Clouds Eyes Up A Switch Release On March 30th
I'm going to do something crazy here and actually comment on the game. I watched the trailer, and I'm really looking forward to it. I have most, if not all of Wales Interactive's FMV games, and most of them a pretty good. The Complex was especially good, not just as far as it's story, but it had amazing production quality for an FMV game. Hopefully, this one follows suit.
Re: Best Nintendo DS RPGs
@dluxxx SMT got some love on the 3DS list, but none on this one. I played Devil Survivor 2 and really liked it, but Strange Journey... I just about doused my trousers from how amazing that game was!
Re: Best Nintendo DS RPGs
These lists are always clogged with Pokemon. I'm thinking that franchise has to be something you had to get into as a kid to appreciate as an adult. I bought Black on the DS as my first (and thus far only) Pokemon game. It was... fine. I enjoyed it somewhat, but if I ranked my DS RPG's best to worst, it would be dead last. The gameplay was fun, but not amazing, and the story was mind numbing.
Re: Dark Horse Appears To Have Cancelled The ARMS Graphic Novel Series
Arms is a sad case of unrealized potential. I really liked it, but if felt like it wasn't really a finished game. The game mechanics were great, but it's really light on content. Unlike Splatoon, there really wasn't any attempt to built up the world, lore or characters. As much as I'm looking forward to Splatoon 3, I think Arms is the one that really needs a sequel.
