@Jhomesjones To be honest, respectable games are few and far between on the 3DS e-shop. The last two I can think of was Shakedown Hawaii and Miles and Kilo, which was release last Spring. Although I have to give credit to a fairly recent game that looked like "baby's first puzzle game" shovelware that I downloaded out of pity. Mia's Picknick is a surprisingly challenging and enjoyable puzzle game, even if visually it does look garbage tier.
When this game comes out, our descendants will have advanced so much they'll look at this game and think, "Oh look at this game showing old days before we transcended to pure energy.
I bought this game and my first impression was actually quite good. But I lost interest pretty quickly. Then I hit an obnoxious boss I couldn't beat. Instead of feeling frustrated, I realized I just didn't care. I sold it shortly thereafter.
When I went to grad school, I packed what I could into my car. Mostly clothes. I was intending to pick up the rest when I went home for the first break. But sure enough, mom already threw out a lot of what I left behind. Nothing was particularly valuable, but it was still annoying considering we were only talking a span of two months. And among my stuff she got rid of was my winter clothes!
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have nothing against Fortnite, but I think this is kind of ugly. The Animal Crossing games do absolutely nothing for me (OK, everyone gasp in horror, but it's true), but the AC themed Switch was gorgeous. I almost wanted to buy it even though I'm not into the games it's based on.
@dazzleshell I probably still play my Wii U more than my Switch, so I hope they don't. Although to be honest, I was expecting Nintendo to be absolutely brutal and shut down the Wii U's online services within a year of the Switch's launch. So knowing how bad the system failed and that Nintendo probably wants to forget it ever happened, if it gets shut down soon, I can't complain.
@Kieroni Do people really think that? I've got loads of games that aren't the first of their series and I can only think of one that would leave new players at a loss for not have had playing the prior installment (Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse). Nintendo or otherwise, it's almost universal for sequels to either start up an all new story or to continue it in such a way that the previous games become unnecessary.
I never really understood this thought process of "If you make a new game, you OWE US ports of the previous installments!" If you wanted to play 3DS games, you should have bought a 3DS. Not to mention, the Switch is already loaded down with ports. Also, taking a game from the 3DS and porting it to the Switch would required a lot of work to make it look good by Switch standards. Alliance Alive, which looked fine on the 3DS, got ported over with no real improvements, and it looked terrible on the Switch.
@Giancarlothomaz Having to lower budgets may be the only way to be profitable. How many theaters are going to be in business when it opens? If they dump it on streaming, as far as I know, Paramount would be at the mercy of someone else's streaming service and they'll want their cut. And movie studio that doesn't have their own established streaming service may have trouble finding a profitable way of getting their movies out.
I hope the next one is mostly in Sonic worlds. The first movie was OK (overly safe and formulaic plot, but funny enough to be worth watching), but I was disappointed that it was almost entirely on Earth.
I still check the 3DS e-shop, almost every week. Sure, most of what's still coming out is low quality shovelware, but it's still interesting to see something new. The last truly noteworthy game was Miles and Kilo in March, although I got a puzzle game recently that despite looking like shovelware, it was surprisingly good.
@GrandScribe This is how I feel about Animal Crossing. I love the cheerful aesthetic and the colorful cast of characters... But I don't love the games themselves. I have New Leaf, but I get bored so quickly that I never get anything done. And I usually go so long between play sessions that my town is always covered in weeds and the animals are all mad at me for not being around.
Does the "western release" not include North America? I checked two retailers' websites; one didn't have it listed at all and the other is selling download codes. Searching on Amazon, European imports came up.
I see Amiibo as a delicate balancing act. As someone who is willing to buy them, it's frustrating how limited their functionality is, especially on Switch. For those of you who skipped the Wii U, I think they did a better job with it on that console. For example, the original Splatoon had some of the best Amiibo functionality, but Splatoon 2 probably has the most useless Amiibo for any game I own. That said, a lot of people (probably the majority) don't want to have to spend extra money on them. If they feel like they're being strong armed into buying Amiibo just to properly enjoy the games, there could be a consumer backlash.
I'm leaning towards PS5, but I probably won't buy a new console for at least a year. I have several PS4 games I'd still like to finish and it's going to take a while. In the mean time, I'll be watching rumors that Japanese game developers are shying away from Sony because of their censorship and apparently losing interest in marketing to Japan. If anything really comes of that, I could flip to Xbox.
I'm looking forward to No More Heroes III, but I'm going to pass on the first two. I get burned out on franchises easily so it kind of annoys me when they re-release the old games shortly before the new one comes out. Had they released them a year or two ago so I could play one and then take a break before III, I would have though about it.
It didn't come with that?! Even the 3D games on the disaster of a console that was the Atari Jaguar had that option. I've always found 3D games virtually unplayable if the Y-axis isn't inverted.
I'm not saying people should lose their mind over this and spew hate on the internet, but I'm going to side with the people voicing disappointment over the lack of inner box art. As someone who buys music on vinyl, I can appreciate the value of artwork on the packaging. For example, I recently bought the 2001 soundtrack and on the front and back are paintings showing the monolith on the African Serengeti. When you open up the gatefold sleeve, there's artwork of the spaceship passing Jupiter, and the records themselves are colored to look like HAL's glowing eye and a starburst. You could say it's all a waste because isn't it the music that counts? But it's just really cool when you open the album up for the first time as see all that. Now back to the game in question, Cadence of Hyrule has been out for a while as a download, so the people planning to buy the physical release are obviously wanting a collectable. So why not give it the artwork fitting for a collector's item?
@MantaPloc I'm not so sure. Ubisoft may be prioritizing the Switch port because the Switch is not only a good part of the market for them, but it was the only system that Starlink sold at all well. And at this point they have plenty of experience making their games run good on the Switch. Plus while the graphics on Fenyx Rising look really good, the cartoonishness has the benefit of reducing the detail they system has to process.
One game I wanted to vote on but isn't on the list is Indianapolis 500 Legends. While certainly not the best game on the system, it is amazingly fun for a racing game that literally has ONE track!
@tameshiyaku I'm not saying "you should pre-order it!" But I expect it will look good on Switch because Starlink looked great and these two games have similar looking graphics.
Fast RMX for me. I probably shouldn't admit this, but I really like Skylanders too (although I bought Imaginators on Wii U). I actually had no interest in BOTW. I don't care for open world games and Twilight Princess HD kind of turned me off from Zelda games.
I'm not saying this game is amazing, but it's decent. And as far as not a ton of content and simple controls, I'll remind NL they gave Pokken Tournament on Wii U a 9/10 and that had less content and had the most dumbed down controls I've ever seen in a fighting game. While this game doesn't do much to throw in variety to the single player campaign, it is a very long campaign so it will keep you busy to complete it all. I'd say if you like Zoids, buy the game. If you just want a fighting game but don't care about Zoids, probably pass.
@Severian Trying to be positive about this kid's future, ironically the upside is that everyone could forget who this kid is in a few years. Then he can have a normal childhood again while he's still young. Another advantage this kid has over Gary Coleman is Ryan will grow up and be hard to recognize. Coleman looked the same as he did on TV for the rest of his life and EVERYONE knew who he was. Not that I particularly approve of what his parents are doing, but I don't think this is nearly as bad as what happens to a lot of child actors.
I'm not sure I see the point. 4K is great for games that are going for realism, but doesn't do much for cartoon graphics. Kind of like I buy live action movies on 4K discs but don't mind watching anime on DVD (yeah, I'm old, I still buy discs instead of streaming).
I'm not sure I can say I've ever been scared by a game. The first one that ever made me jump was Alien vs Predator on the Atari Jaguar. Walking down a corridor, suddenly hearing a shriek, attacked from the side by a xenomorph was pretty shocking especially since I never played an FPS before. I though Cursed Mountain on Wii was rather creepy. I think it might have mostly been the music.
@GilbertXI Yeah, I know a lot of people hate them. In the early days of the Wii, they tried to force them into everything so you ended up with a lot of games where they did more harm than good. But later when they were more selective on what used motion vs stick and buttons, I thought the games got a lot better. I think some of the best examples were No More Heroes and Red Steel 2 (but not the first one!). It seems most people remember the Wii for the worst it had to offer instead of the best, at least outside of 1st party.
@Ventilator This is why I'm actually not crazy about the Switch like I was the previous Nintendo systems. It brings together a lot of the previous ideas, most notably touchscreen and motion controls. But at the same time, the different ways you can play the Switch is making developers ignore those features. The touch screen is mostly ignored because of TV mode. And I've noticed motion controls (which I've always loved) have all but disappeared since the Lite was released because those owners won't have separate JoyCons. I know I might stir a lot of ire here, but I think the Switch has turned into a jack of all trades, master of none.
I'll be disappointed if they go down this road. Now, I'm not saying I'm going to freak out, "OMG I"M SO ANGRY!!!" But it was always a lot of fun when a new system comes out and you get to try out its new tricks.
