Two games on here I'd strongly second is Nano Assault and Star Fox Guard. Nano Assault is a great shooter and graphically, it looks AMAZING! Star Fox Guard didn't make a good first impression, but about a year after I bought it, I got sucked in and now I absolutely love it. It also makes for an interesting novelty because of how it was designed around the gamepad. It's one of the few Wii U games that I don't see really being possible on Switch or any other traditional console.
I loved the original trilogy, the Apollo Justice and Miles Edgeworth games were fun, but didn't match the originals, Duel Destinies seemed like a return to form... And then they lost me with Spirit of Justice. I liked the stories enough in SOJ, but there were too many times I had to look up what I was supposed to do. Working out the puzzles in the game seemed very random and counter-intuitive compared to the previous games.
When I walked into the store, I hadn't made up my mind if I was going to get Frontiers for Switch or PS4. The reviews I read/watch up to that point didn't say anything about issues on the Switch beyond the expected resolution downgrade. At the last minute, I went with PS4 and now I'm so glad I did. I've played about three hours so far and I don't see any issues with the Playstation vs apart from occasional framerate stutters, but nothing too bad. Three hours isn't enough to have a solid opinion, but I'm enjoying it so far. I doubt I'll be raving about it being a 10/10, but it is way better than the last two Sonic games I bought (Lost World and Forces). Maybe 4/10 is valid for the Switch version, but the PS4 version is definitely much better than that.
I can't believe they're releasing Fire Emblem in January. The month of off-brand racing games and dodgy projects publishers just want to get out the door and hope no one notices.
I was struggling to convince myself to vote for my "favorite" Pokemon. But then I tricked myself into thinking I was voting for my favorite class of Skylanders. I've always been partial to Zap and Gill Grunt, so... Water!
@xLanS3105 The Devil Survivor games, while not exactly my favorite, are a nice alternate take on the franchise. I'd be happy with a Devil Survivor 3 for Switch. I see people saying they hope a new main line SMT comes out soon, but it's going to be a long time before I finish SMT V so I'd rather see a side project get released.
I think the Jaguar games they chose were based ones what people would recognize from getting roasted on YouTube. Sure, that will satiate idle curiosity, but it's not a good way to represent the system. I think it's a shame that they are putting in Cybermorph (not as bad as people say, but not great either) instead of the far superior in every way sequel, Battlemorph. But I guess that risks people being upset that they're not playing the same game that AVGN was mocking. And there was another game Hoverstrike (100% Atari, they definitely have the rights to it) that if they cheated a bit to improve framerate and tightened up the controls, would also be a really good game.
@popey1980 To keep things in perspective, I rushed to the store to buy Bayonetta 2 when it first came out and walked away with the game AND the hard cover Bayonetta 2 strategy book. So guides coming out immediately has always been a thing.
A Plague's Tale is the sort of game I wish was done as a one off and given a proper ending. I played the original on PS4, enjoyed it, but I was ready for the story to reach it's conclusion and I'd move on. But wait, you don't find a cure so you have to come back for the next installment to see how the story ends (although probably have to wait for part 3, winkie face!). I get tired of everything having to be ongoing franchises, and it's the worst in games because of how many years apart they can be, and one "disappointing sales" and you'll NEVER see how it ends.
@JayJ That's what's bothered me ever since this game was initially revealed. B2 looked absolutely amazing by Wii U standards and still looks good because the bright and picturesque views in Paradisio and that old time Italian looking town. This one is dark and kind of bland looking (strictly talking visuals). I am glad to see ancient temples as environments. The previews always showed modern settings which would have been really disappointing if that was the whole game.
I only have five Mario Parties and have never played any of the others, so I can't really give an educated vote. Those five are: 10 (Wii U), Super on Switch, and all three on 3DS. Now I know this will bring calls to see a psychiatrist, but my favorite of those is MP10. I liked the "road trip" set up of that game. I even like the Amiibo mode because of the Mario Party games I do have, the Amiibo mode most rewards skill with the least amount of "Bowser Revolution" style BS.
I loved the first game, but I hit a game breaking bug near the gate of Bowser's Castle so I can't finish it, at least not without starting over. But I loved what I was able to play and can't wait to play this. Just hoping I'm not hit with another bug.
@Ventilator It's not that I think Platinum owed her the role in Bayonetta 3, but since she did the first two, it strikes me that they would want her back because people know the voice. I have no idea what voice actors for games normally get paid or how long she'd be working on it, so I don't really know how much of an "insult" this is. If the script is finalized and she could get everything done in a day, it's hard to say $4000 is a raw deal, although actors pay is always more about the expected sales and the draw of that actor, rather than the actual labor. For myself, I'm not going to boycott the game over this and if I was really excited for it, this wouldn't stop me from picking it up. But I'm already on the face about it, so knowing that it's not going to be the same voice of Bayonetta certainly doesn't help.
@Rainz I can see the theme they have going here. The games on the list have a lot of high contrast. Much of the screen is very dark while others are glaringly bright. And that's when OLED's benefits are most clear. A game like Mario+Rabbids, or really just about any Mario game where EVERYTHING is bright, it won't make as much of a difference.
My enthusiasm for Bayonetta 3 has all but disappeared, partly because I've never been one to buy game after game from the same franchise. But also because I just haven't been that impressed with the trailers. I'm thinking this is the game I should get to scratch the "weird action" itch.
@andyg1412 The reason people are taking issue with your comment is it comes off as dismissive. I think we can all agree we know of a lot of games that are popular and "a big deal" that we don't personally enjoy. For example, two of the three games you listed, you couldn't pay me to play, but if they arrived in the same month, I wouldn't describe it as a slow month because I know they're a big deal to a lot of people.
Devil's Third! I just played it a few hours ago. Sure, it runs like garbage, but I think the gameplay is so fun. I shouldn't admit this, but I also like Emergency Heroes on Wii. But the ultimate case of me loving a game most people consider reviled trash is Fight for Life on the Atari Jaguar. Never heard of it? Look it up on YouTube, but be prepared for an avalanche of lies from the haters!
For the most part, I'm OK with 30 FPS. It kind of depends on how fast Sonic actually moves. It can be annoying in really fast paced games, but since my alternative is the PS4, if I'm going to buy the game, I'll have to accept it. Still, I plan on waiting on the reviews to decide which version I'll buy just in case the Switch version runs like garbage (or the game is just terrible).
For the most part, not interested. But those analog sticks would be really nice for playing the 3DS Monster Hunter games. I thought those games were amazing, the most technically impressive games on the system (not counting the handful that where New 3DS exclusive). But the 3DS's controls weren't great for action games.
I've got most of the Splatoon Amiibo, and when the new game released, I initially thought "I hope they bring out Splatoon 3 Amiibo!" But then I remembered how ugly the hosts in the new game are. So now I'm indifferent.
@Maulbert I'm with you. At first I was thinking, "Songs decent, vocals are a bit weak..." And then it kicked into full rock mode and it was just grating. It's a good thing that the main theme is something you generally skip past anyway.
As long as the original game (without the DLC) has the content to justify full price, I don't care if there's optional content for those who want to pay more. The only other way this would bother me is if essential parts of the story where in the DLC. Not that Mario + Rabbids is exactly epic story telling. But I'm not too worried about that, the DLC in the first M+R was essentially it's own game and not part of the main one.
I see I'm not the only one who watched this and thought, "Meh." I'm going to buy it because I love Splatoon, and even though it's not a lot of bang for you buck, I really enjoy the single player campaign. But I was really hoping the multiplayer would show off some really new ideas. But it really does look like more of the same. I wonder if we're now officially in the late stage of the Switch where all the games coming out for the console have a decidedly halfhearted feel as Nintendo puts their real effort into the next console.
One game I love to show off, mainly because it's so delightfully weird, and almost no one's heard of it... Ninja Golf on Atari 7800. It's fun, but I won't claim the game play is ground breaking. In what other game do you have to fight off dragons, ninjas and sharks to get to the green? I don't know that my friends are impressed, but they always smile when they see it. It's definitely more fun than Mario Golf Super Rush.
@N00BiSH OK, I looked up a review, and he was playing it with the anti-aliasing and it looked so much better. He also showed part of the game that looked suspiciously like Space Harrier, which I love.
I wouldn't mind chunky polygon graphics... If it had clean lines and good shading. Think Horizon Chase Turbo. But the low resolution and shading so it literally looks like a PS1 game is disgusting. That is one generation I NEVER want to go back to.
Normally, I'd have faith in humanity and that this person would only drive his Wii-mobile on private property and not on roads... But we're talking about a TikTok star.

Oh yeah, leave it to Kotaku to look at a child's game and turn it into something perverse.
I really hope all the stages in Splatoon 3 are new. I realize a lot of people didn't that the original game because... Wii U. But for those of us who did, it was really lame how many stages in Splatoon 2 were recycled from the original.
I'm not against the idea, but... Why are people at Sega talking about some other theoretical Sonic game while Frontiers is in the home stretch of development, and not getting great press? I see this headline and it come across as, "Don't worry about Frontiers, you can skip it because we'll make a new Sonic Adventure." Again, I'm not against a new Adventure, but talking about it now is the kind of bungled marketing that Sega is infamous for.
@Orokosaki I certainly won't argue, although online media makes it look even worse. How do you right ten articles a day on Nintendo to make sure readers check in every day? They could do deep dives into every e-shop game or... Endlessly dig up things from the past. And I'm pretty sure nostalgia gets more views than a $5 game on e-shop.
