Everyone else thinks Shadow is soooo incredibly cool because he shoots and scowls and is called “SHADOW” which means “DÄRK LÏGHT-VÖID” in German (the coolest of languages).

He is so cool that sometimes I forget he is a small, timid, snouted mammal that feeds on berries and snails.

Makes sense to leave him out of a strictly nostalgia-focused game, and while I like Shadow I definitely don't think he's necessary to be in everything, though do kind of feel like on a branding level they're kind of attaching themselves way too much to the old games with modern 2D Sonic games.

It was kind of cute with Generations but at a point it just comes off like if the New Super Mario Bros. games played and looked exactly like SMB3 and featured no new enemies or game mechanics.

I'm glad, frankly. I maintain Sonic's universe has too many useless characters and Shadow is one of them. Sorry to his fans, but Shadow doesn't do it for me.

While I'd dearly love to see official "classic" versions of some characters from modern games, like Shadow, Rouge, Cream & Cheese, etc, I'm NGL I'd be actively annoyed if that happened before getting the 32X Chaotix team were added (and Ray, too). They are great designs and very underused except Mighty.

Well Shadow is more a villain than a hero character so it make sense why he won't appeared alongside the classic 4 which he had no tie with. Shadow is more team with Rouge and Gamma in the golden era whereas Mighty and Ray are more towards the Chaotix which is the drought era (the Sega Saturn era where no new mainline Sonic games exist). This is the team that define each era:

Classic Era: Classic Sonic, Classic Tails, Classic Knuckles, CD Amy, Metal Sonic, Egg Robo, Dr. Robotnik, and Fang the Sniper.

Drought Era: Mighty, Ray, Charmy, Espio, Vector, Sally Acorn, Metal Knuckles, Bean, Bark, Honey, and Doll Tails.

Golden Era: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Gamma, Omega, Chaos, Tikal, Shadow, Rouge, Big, Cream, Emerl, Cheese, Jet, Wave, Storm, and Dr. Eggman.

Modern Era: Blaze, Silver, Elise, Chip, Dark Gaia, Zavok, Zazz, Zomon, Master Zik, Zeena, Zor, Sage, Imperator Ix, Shade, Infinite, Lyrics, Dodon Pa, and Mephiles.

Never expected to see Shadow in this game (and I’m not sure anyone else did either). If they add any characters beyond the 4 we already know about, it’ll be Metal Sonic, Mighty, or Ray. Those characters seem to be the “classic” characters that Sega uses these days.

It seems pretty clear we’ll now have 2 series of Sonic mainline games. There will be modern Sonic, like Forces and Frontiers, and “classic,” like Mania and now this one. Safe to assume any character that was introduced in the 00s or later won’t appear in a classic style game.

I tried to watch a playthrough of Shadow The Hedgehog, but had to quit during the intro video, it was that bad for me.

When he is like Vegeta, he is alright.

Why do we need an edgy hedgehog when we already have an edgy echidna? Probably an unpopular opinion but I really don't like knuckles. Talk about a one-note character.

Well obviously. Shadow should still be encased in a stasis capsule in Prison Island until Eggman frees him during the events of Sonic Adventure 2.

That is until Sonic Mega Superstars Plus is unveiled, and Shadow, Blaze, Silver, Cre-- Omega become playable characters again.

This is just PR talk, Iizuka doesn't care about the lore, you already saw with Frontiers, anything goes, anything is canon.

Good, I really just can't stand this edgelord. To be honest, the only tolerable characters in this franchise are the classic characters, Big, Cream, maybe Blaze, and Chip. Everyone else tries way too hard to be as cool and edgy as possible (Infinite, Mephilies) or, not bad, but they feel like characters that come from a different franchise (Merlina, The Deadly Six)

Unpopular opinion, but I think Shadow has been mostly pointless since Sonic '06. I'd have preferred if he stayed dead in SA2.

@Serpenterror Isn't Bean technically a part of the Classic Era since he was the main star of Dynamite Dux which was on Sega Master System? I remember that being one of the first video games I played along with Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Wonder Boy and with Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy making a comeback with new games in the last few years I would love a new Dynamite Dux game and was surprised it didn't get a sequel.

@JohnnyMind I would love a game where we got to play as Cream, Vector, Charmy Bee, Rouge, Blaze, Espio, Big, Silver etc. There are so many good Sonic characters but a lot of them never get a chance in the spotlight and it is mostly only Sonic, Tails, Amy and Knuckles that are the playable characters.

There already is a game like that. It's called "Shadow the Hedgehog." I should know, because I own a copy of the game for the GameCube.

Shadow isn't as edgy as people think, at least in his first appearance in Adventure 2. He was also different from other rivals like Vegeta since, while he did believe to be "the ultimate life form", it wasn't based on ego but in the information that he had and what he thought that he had to do. Of course he's the usual "like the character but darker" in concept, but he was handled properly. He wasn't angry or violent towards others without any reason and he had a good backstory.

Spoiler of the ending of Adventure 2:
If you battled long enough, Shadow realizes that the "ultimate life form" is actually Sonic and instead of throwing a tantrum or having an existential crisis he tells Sonic that with enthusiasm.

I didn't expect anything less but I am a little disappointed since he truly is one of my favorite Sonic The Hedgehog characters. I would have been super stoked if he made it.

I loved those games too and wish they would re-release 'Sonic Heroes' 'cause it seems nearly all the other 3D Sonic games have been re-released in some shape or form such as Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations which I have got on X Box 360, X Box One and X Box Series X while Sonic Heroes has been left forgotten by Sega despite a lot of fans considering it one of the best 3D Sonic games. I am hoping Amy is here to stay too and we are going to get her as a playable character through the DLC in 'Sonic Frontiers' soon and 'Sonic Frontiers 2' might have her in it too. With DLC in these games it could give a lot of characters a chance to be playable for the first time.

@roy130390 the issue comes after adventure 2, they stopped handing him to well and it got worse after the ken pender's legal case as losing control of a bunch of sonic characters made them more protective of their in-house characters. its one of the reasons why shadow and metal didn't show up too much in sonic boom, to much character regulation.

They told us we could use him, he could be on the show, but he was not to be making any jokes. We were like “uh, sure.” So to work around that, the joke became the very fact that Shadow is completely humorless. So edgy, all the time. It was funny that he was here, having to deal with all these crazy people.
Greg: Shadow was a character that was very protected by SEGA. They were reluctant to let us use him very much, and when we did use him, he came with so many notes and restrictions that it was easier to not use him. That’s why he wasn’t on the show as much as fans would have wanted.
MV: So that’s why he was relegated to being a once-in-a-blue-moon, ‘special episode’ character. Was Metal Sonic the same? He doesn’t even talk, you could have used him more!
Alan: Yeah, Metal Sonic only put in the one appearance.
Greg: But we brought him back for the finale. Honestly, when characters that were existing, original-universe Sonic characters were brought in, those episodes were just too hard to write for. There were so many notes, they were such protected characters. We got to have so much more freedom with characters of our own, like Dave the Intern and the Mayor, that it was just easier. Did we want to include Big the Cat? Sure we did. But writing that would have been a huge headache, it would have had to have gone through so many layers of clearance. It would have taken ages to get approved. It wasn’t worth it. Hence why there’s only Shadow, Metal Sonic, and Vector the Crocodile in a handful of episodes.
