Re: Video: Ten 3DS Exclusives That Could Be Better On Nintendo Switch

TheFox

@KingMike In my experience, the closest thing to a compatibility problem if you didn't upgrade to the New 3DS (barring exclusives like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D) was Monster Hunter 4 and Generations. The right stick controlled the camera, so if you played it on an original 3DS, you were stuck having to control the camera the same way as in Monster Hunter 3... Left D-pad or touchscreen. Still playable, but both those options are pretty bad compared to having the right stick. Oh yeah, and Amiibo support. I've got two games where the Amiibo are actually worth using; MP Star Rush and FE Shadows of Valientia.

Re: Atlus Wants To Know What Games You Want Ported To Switch

TheFox

Quit wasting time with ports and just finish SMT V! As much as I loved the DS and 3DS SMT and Etrian Odyssey games, I'm not going to play them again. And let's be real, unless the "port" involves a heavy graphical upgrade, a lot of these games would look pretty bad on the Switch. I LOVED SMT Strange Journey, but when they rereleased it on the 3DS, the graphics were already subpar.

Re: Wii U Receives Its First System Firmware Update Since 2018

TheFox

@NintendoDad Yeah, it worries me that the gamepad is both integral to the Wii U, and such a potential source of failure. I already replaced the analogue sticks in my gamepad. The parts were cheap, and it wasn't very difficult, but I was nervous when I opened it up and there were all those really thin wires I had to work around.

The only thing that's gone wrong with any of my other Nintendos (barring outright abuse) is: of course Switch Joycons drifting, and the shoulder buttons died on my DSi. And my DSi wasn't even that old when that happened.

Re: Wii U Receives Its First System Firmware Update Since 2018

TheFox

I wish they had a patch for my problem. I'm having an existential crisis right now because my Wii U gamepad won't communicate with the console, I've got it in a video game repair shop, crossing my fingers that it can be fixed. There's a few games I'm determined to beat that aren't playable without it.

Re: Poll: Do You Like The Chibi Art Style In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl?

TheFox

I'm willing to tolerate it in a game I otherwise really want to play. But I absolutely do not like chibi art. It's one of the main reason I never tried the Bravely Default games. With so many RPG's to choose from on the 3DS, why would I go with one that looks like that? I also have to say, I don't like when the game can't decide what the characters are supposed to look like. They are chibi in the over world, but normal (by Pokemon standards) in battle? That's just dumb.

Re: Fortnite Adds Ripley and The Xenomorph From Alien To Its Crew

TheFox

@Heavyarms55 Isn't a lot of the IP's they're putting in Fortnite owned by Disney now? That could explain how they're getting so many, so fast. While this Fortnite stuff doesn't bother me, I gotta say, Fortnite Ripley looks about as much like Sigorney Weaver as a Funko Pop. I never understood the appeal of that awful plastic trash.

Re: Random: This Unused DS Lite Feature Would've Effectively Turned The Console Into A Switch

TheFox

Shortly after I bought a DS, I bought a 40" HD tv. I'm pretty sure taking a low res DS game and blowing it up on a 40" tv would have looked like hot garbage. It would have been an interesting feature as far as "gee-wiz" factor, but not very practical. As far as the origins of the hybrid concept, I'd give that to NEC and their TurboGrafX and Turbo Express. While the console and handheld were totally separate hardware, they used the same game cartridges. So the Turbo Express was just one connector port away from being a true hybrid.

Re: Random: Talented Hacker Bumps The Frame Rate Of SNES Race Drivin' From 4fps To 30

TheFox

This was one of the games in the early 90's that I loved in the arcades, but didn't see much point in console ports. Not only was the performance terrible on home consoles, but there wasn't much to the game. In the arcades, it was exciting as the first 3D polygon racer I ever played and I pumped several dollars into it. But if I remember correctly, it only had two tracks. So even if the consoles could have run it properly, you'd be bored with it in a day. I'd put Pit Fighter into this group too.

Re: Zelda Remake Specialist Grezzo Appears To Have Helped Out With Miitopia's Nintendo Switch Port

TheFox

I loved this game on 3DS. I really wish this was a new game rather than a port. And for people debating whether it's worth the time to make a bunch of Mii's to play this game, I have this to say. If you play Miitopia with a bunch of Mii's you've based one your friends and/or coworkers, when the silly antics begin, it is hilarious! Using generic Mii's wouldn't be nearly as fun.

Re: Nintendo Ignored Zelda's 35th Anniversary This Weekend, But Fans Are Celebrating In Style

TheFox

It is a little odd that there's not even a post about the anniversary. That said, the people crying that Nintendo isn't showing the franchise any love need to calm down. The Switch has gotten BOTW, two Hyrule Warriors, Skyward Sword HD, Cadence of Hyrule, Link's Awakening, and there's almost certainly more ports coming. And BOTW2. As someone who's not into the franchise, it's to the point where I just roll my eyes at the mention of a new Zelda game.

Re: Gallery: Splatoon 3 Is Looking Pretty Fresh In These New Screenshots

TheFox

@SmaggTheSmug I've thought the same thing. I think a fully realized single player game could be amazing. But for me it ultimately depends on how much different 3 is from 2. If they create new levels that really change the gameplay, I'll probably love it. If it's a pile of recycled materials from the first two games plus a desert hub world and one arena to look cool in the trailers* I probably won't buy it.

  • Yes, I'm being facetious, I'm sure Nintendo won't be that lazy.

@Mariotehplumber I think people are reading too far into this. I'm seeing so many posts like they know what they game is going to be like. But all they've shown is the hub world, one level, and a "not gameplay footage" message.

Re: Nintendo Hiring Splatoon 3 Level Designer To Renovate "Existing" Stages

TheFox

@Silly_G Since you brought up Smash, I tend not to keep going back to a single fighting franchise for exactly that reason. Fighting games recycle content like no other genre. But I guess they have to because fans would come unglued if their favorite fighters didn't return. Same goes with changing the game mechanics. So even in the fighting series I really like, I've never bought more than two games in a series because I like trying something new.

Re: Nintendo Hiring Splatoon 3 Level Designer To Renovate "Existing" Stages

TheFox

@NEStalgia Mario Kart does have a lot of reused levels, but they span decades. I think Mario Kart 8 has one track from MK Wii and one track from MK7. Plus, the tracks pulled from SNES or GBA are hardly the same once they've been upgraded to a modern system. So when you get a new MK, half of it is NOT from the most recent one or two games.

Re: Nintendo Hiring Splatoon 3 Level Designer To Renovate "Existing" Stages

TheFox

God, why?! I thought it was already shameful how much of Splatoon 2 was recycled from the original (although I guess I can cut them some slack because of how poorly the Wii U sold and they needed the sequel out shortly after the Switch's launch). They really need new material that changes things up, not just the same thing over again. Mario Kart generally only uses one old level from a single game, so by that standard, there should be at most two recycled stages.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2021 Nintendo Direct, Then?

TheFox

I'm surprised by how many people are complaining about this Direct. They showed off quite a bit of stuff including a launch date for NMH3, announced Skyward Sword HD, Splatoon 3 (which is huge IMO because a lot of people didn't believe we'd get another one on the Switch), etc. I can understand people being disappointed that "their" game wasn't covered. I myself hoped to see SMT V REALLY bad, but I'm not going to pretend everything else doesn't exist and rage that the whole thing sucked because my favorite game wasn't spotlighted.

Re: Talking Point: So, What Are The Chances We'll See A 'New' Nintendo Switch In 2021?

TheFox

I don't plan on upgrading, but I think it would be smart of Nintendo to push out an upgraded Switch that while not making any radical changes, could run games like Astral Chain with smoother frame rate. Oh yeah, and has controllers that work! With with the Switch as successful as it is, I wouldn't push a major change that might split the Switch base like the New 3DS did.

Re: Review: Redout: Space Assault - A Bargain-Bin Star Fox With Spectacular Visuals

TheFox

@Lordplops Oh God, please don't encourage them to port that game! I'll agree, it showed brief glimpses of promise. I'm not hating on Star Fox in general, I'd like to see an all new game. But I believe there is so much wrong with Zero, and the controls weren't even my top complaint, the only way for the next Star Fox game to be good is to start over.

Re: Cloud Gaming Service Google Stadia Shuts Down Internal Development Studios

TheFox

Before it launched, I thought Stadia might become a major force. But when it face planted straight out of the gate and didn't seem to have any serious plan to move forward, I just thought, "Microsoft and Sony are going to murder Stadia when they get streaming worked into their networks." And I don't understand what Google was thinking. Launching a gaming platform is a "Go big or go home" scenario. You have to spend a huge amount of money to get into the market (and Google certainly could afford it). But if you go in halfway and hedge your bets, it's a guaranteed failure. Sony and Microsoft both threw tons of money into their launches. Stadia had a good idea that wasn't ready for market, didn't spend money on exclusives, then crossed their fingers and hoped developers would jump on board. It kind of reminds me of the 3DO were something that had promise was crippled by not having a workable business model and lack of sufficient budget.

Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury amiibo Functionality Detailed

TheFox

@VR32X Considering how well Amiibo sold, I'm not sure why they've been downgraded to little more than collectables on Switch. I have some Amiibo for Switch games, but I haven't been impressed with their functionality. My Super Mario Odyssey wedding Amiibo have gotten more action in Mario Party 10 and Ultra Smash on Wii U than with the game they were supposed to accompany.

Re: Official Rabbids Username Tweak Fuels Speculation Over A Mario + Rabbids Sequel

TheFox

I LOVED this game... And then it broke my heart. I was on the verge of entering Bowser's castle (at least it looked like Bowser's castle) so I assuming I was near the end. But then I'd walk up to rabbids and nothing happened. It's clear there is supposed to be a battle, and the rabbids are right there! But I can't trigger it to start. And the gate won't open until you win the battle that can't be entered. So all that work, and I'm just stuck.
