Re: Nintendo Shares New Music Track For Splatoon 3, Have A Listen

TheFox

Hmm... I have the CD soundtracks to Splatoon 2, which is great, and the Octo Expansion, which is kind of a mixed bag. This new song is a little too much grating guitars and high pitched vocals. Of course there were always a few songs like that mixed into the previous games, so no reason to panic. But I can't honestly say I like this track.

Re: NPD Group Reveals "Top 10 Most Played Games" Of Q1 2022 (US)

TheFox

I don't have any of these, but I tend to avoid time consuming sandbox or online games. For full disclosure, I do have COD Cold War on PS4 although mainly for the single player campaign. I honestly wish I did enjoy Animal Crossing. I have New Leaf on 3DS and it's undeniably charming. Every once in a while I'll fire it up and accomplish a few tasks, but it just doesn't hold my attention.

Re: Nintendo Says It Wants To Avoid A Repeat Of Wii U With Switch's Successor

TheFox

One advantage the Switch successor will have is it's not based on an already failing strategy. For as wildly successful as the Wii was, it really lost momentum fast in the second half of the generation. All the casual gamers that went nuts for the Wii in 2007 started buying tablets and smart phones in 2009. The Wii U was supposed to appeal to the same people as the Wii, but a lot of those people were gone and NEVER coming back.

Re: Sonic Fan Content Flagged As "Made For Kids" On YouTube, Harming Creator Income

TheFox

I always thought the "No targeted ads on videos marked for kids" was a very unfair double standard for YouTube. Do you think that when kids turn on their favorite cartoons on cable tv, the commercials aren't very deliberately targeted at the core demographic of that show? And for all the hyped stories about how the social media networks can perfectly target adds to your interests... Why do I get so many You-Tube ads for feminine products and urban brands? I have no need for the one and no interest in the other. This perfect targeting seems a bit overhyped.

Re: Ubisoft's China-Exclusive Rabbids Game Is Apparently Getting A Global Switch Release

TheFox

The trailer doesn't give me a very good idea what the game will be like. For me (who rarely has anyone else to play party games with), Rabbids games have been very hit and miss based on whether or not they have something to tie the minigames together. I loved the original and it worked pretty well as a single player game. The second one was decent, but only if you had other players, it was pointless by yourself. Rabbids Travel in Time wasn't great, even if you had other players. I know it got trashed by critics, but I actually liked Rabbids Land on Wii U.

Re: The 3DS Is Getting Another Physical Release This Year, And It's A Pun On 'Vagrant Story'

TheFox

Found out they have a second run of this game for sale. Since this will almost certainly be the last physical release for the 3DS, I figured I should pick it up. I wish it actually had 3D. It's kind of lame that the 3DS goes out with a 2D game. I saw in NL's review, the complained it's short. That might be a good thing for me. Three years after the 3DS stopped getting physical games (except this one), I still have a decent back log. If this was a 100 hour game, chances of me every finishing it would be pretty slim.

Re: Rumour: Sonic Team Is Working On A Brand New 2D Sonic Game

TheFox

I'm surprised they didn't time something like this with the movies. I can see why they wouldn't want a big 3D game to come out the same day the movies opened because that kind of locked in schedule is how you get a Sonic 06 fiasco. But timing a more modest 2D Sonic project with levels inspired by the locations in the movies seems like it would have been great marketing. And thinking about all those poor parents getting bombarded with, "I WANT THE NEW SONIC GAME!" immediately after walking out of the theater brings joy to my heart.

Re: Video: Is Nintendo Switch Sports Really That Bad?

TheFox

@TG1 6 may be labeled "Not Bad" but if you look over their ratings, they're so over inflated, they are really only using the 5-10 part of the scale. Seriously, a game has to essentially be nonfunctional to get less that 5. So it is really rare for a Nintendo first party game to get a 6.

Re: Feature: What's Your Biggest Nintendo Launch Day Regret?

TheFox

I bought a 3DS within a week of its release. At the time, I didn't really follow the gaming press, so it was news to me when I later found out that it had "a bad launch line up." I was really happy with the games I got early on (except that dinosaur fighting game).

Re: Nintendo Issues Joy-Con Safety Warning Ahead Of Switch Sports Release

TheFox

I feel rather ambivalent on this issue. Back in the Wii U days, I tried to be helpful by posting a comic style warning to Miiverse showing how not to knock someone's head off while playing with motion controls... And they removed it for violence! How many children were decapitated because they didn't see my warning?

Re: Rumour: Ubisoft Being Eyed Up For A Potential Takeover

TheFox

I'm not defending Ubi leadership, but I really don't agree with "there's nowhere to go but up." If they get bought out, I could easily see them being strip mined for their biggest IP which will then be run into the ground. Granted, they've done a pretty good job of that themselves, but if you think it couldn't get worse, look at Activision, EA or 2K.

Re: Here's Your First Look At The Switch Box Art For Splatoon 3

TheFox

I hope they are holding back some surprises... Maybe a whole yet to be revealed new mode. I love Splatoon enough that I'll buy this regardless, even if it is just new maps. But based on what they are showing here, I have to add my voice to the masses complaining how similar this is to Splatoon 2.

Re: Sonic Origins Has Been Rated In Australia

TheFox

I loved Sonic on the Genesis back in the day, but I hadn't played any Classic Sonic since then. So I was excited when Sonic Mania was released... And I didn't really enjoy it that much. Then I heard Freedom Planet was kind of like Classic Sonic, but better. So I bought that... I've come to the shocking conclusion that for me, that time has passed. I guess I'm just not that into 2D Sonic any more. But I will be eagerly awaiting Frontiers. The screenshots they're released so far look promising.

Re: Video: What Legend Of Zelda Games Can We Expect To Fill The Gap In 2022?

TheFox

Personally, I feel like we're drowning in Zelda games, but if we have to keep the pipeline pumping out ports and remakes, I'd say an upgraded port of Ocarina of Time (substantial improvements beyond graphics - overhaul the navi character) would make the most sense. It's often cited as being the best Zelda and it's got much more name recognition than some of the other titles I'm seeing mentioned here.

Re: Atlus Dominates 3DS eShop Chart As Pokémon Crystal Falls Off Top Spot (North America)

TheFox

I picked up Radiant Historia a few months ago. It's amazing and I definitely recommend picking it up. For a lot of these Atlus RPG's, if you miss them on 3DS, I'm not sure that there are close equivalents on Switch. Sure, SMTV and Nocturne is on Switch, but they play a lot different than Strange Journey and Soul Hackers. Etrian Odyssey was so specifically designed around the DS/3DS, I don't know that they will continue at all. Meanwhile, Pokemon is pretty much Pokemon. Unless you just want to "catch 'em all," I don't think you're missing out on anything unique if you pass up a few.

Re: No More Heroes 3 Is No Longer A Switch Exclusive

TheFox

@Ryu_Niiyama Well, there's that breed of Nintendo fan that really, REALLY wants games to stay exclusive on Switch. How will they know to have a meltdown in the comments if Nintendo Life doesn't tell them?
(Before anyone yells at me, yes, I know Playstation and Xbox has the same kind of fans).

Re: Best Nintendo Switch 3D Platformers

TheFox

Can a game be a platformer without jumping? Captain Toad, while it's a good game, seems more like a puzzle game than a platformer, in large part because you can't jump between "platforms." But it suppose it has some things in common.

Re: Shin'en Kicks Off 'Everything Must Go' 3DS And Wii U eShop Sale, Up To 80% Off

TheFox

@juliobrand My Wii U, which has seen very heavy use, works just fine... As long as I'm using any controller other than the game pad. But it's almost impossible to keep the signal between the game pad and the console connected. It's in the shop for it's third repair for this problem. If it fails again (and at this point, I'm pretty pessimistic), I might try to buy a whole new console. On the 3DS side of the house, I've never had any trouble with any of the four I own except the one I dropped repeatedly. Considering that I abused it to the point that the casing is breaking apart, I think the fact that it works at all is pretty impressive.

Re: Review: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 1 - A 'Safe' Start To The 48-Track DLC Pack

TheFox

I've been stubbornly refusing to buy MK8D because I have the original MK8 on Wii U. My resolve wavered a bit when I heard about this expansion. All these new tracks! But I have to buy a port of a game I already own... What a conundrum! But now that I've seen screenshots and video, the internal conflict is dissipating. I'm sure I'd enjoy these tracks but there is a distinct lack of "wow factor" and I'm feeling like this is something I can easily live without.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Chocobo GP

TheFox

@BenAV Nintendo consoles are probably the highest concentration of Karting fans on any platform, and a lot of people probably buy multiple Karting games. Unlike something like an RPG, they don't require huge amounts of time, so you can easily jump back and forth between them. The question is, does it offer something different than Mario Kart? As much as I like MK8, Sonic All Stars Racing on Wii U played quite a bit different, rewarded skill, and honestly, if you were playing it by yourself, I think it was better than Mario Kart. But if you have friends over, the zany (and unfair) elements of Mario Kart would provide a better time. So hopefully Square Enix designed the game to justify owning both.

Re: YouTube Confirms Copyright Claims On GilvaSunner's Channel Were From Nintendo

TheFox

This is about as clear cut as you can get with copyrights. I think Nintendo can get pretty ridiculous with their copyright claims against YouTubers showing footage from their games, but if the songs are available to download, they that's straight up giving away their property. I do wish they'd make more of their music available for purchase, especially in the west. I like to buy video game soundtracks on CD (I'm old fashioned), but since many of them are only released in Japan, they are EXPENSIVE to buy in America.

Re: Bandai Namco Has Slightly Changed Its New Logo

TheFox

@NinChocolate I work for a huge corporation who recently did the same thing, rolled out a new totally generic and sterile logo. We joked that whoever was tasked to make it forgot until five minutes before it was due. I get that "clean and understated" is in right now, but my god, some of these new logos are just pathetic.
