When The Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess was simultaneously released on the Nintendo GameCube and Wii in 2006, it was praised for being the mature Zelda title fans had always dreamed of. To this day, it remains a favourite – so how would you feel about it making a return?
The proven data miner who operates under the Twitter handle NWPlayer123 recently posted a conversation she had with an individual who claims Nintendo has listed a new title ID for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii U eShop.
According to the source, only the HOME Menu icon for the game was recovered – which can be seen by opening the tweet below:
https://twitter.com/NWPlayer123/status/653697137230745600
It is not clear if this data is linked to a re-release, or an entirely new HD game. There is also the possibility this is a simple error or test on Nintendo's behalf. If a release is on the cards, it wouldn't be all that surprising given just how many Zelda titles have been re-released recently.
Let us know in the comments what you make of these purported findings.

I'd love to play Twilight Princess with the Gamepad, with motion control aiming and plenty of buttons for items, combining the Wii and GameCube control schemes.
This would be the fourth remake of a Zelda game this gen if it's true. As much as I like the game, a Twilight Princess remake can wait. We need a Nintendo Direct. I'm sick of all these rumors.
I just want a Direct tbh.
HD would be a pleasant surprise.
HD port? really? slow news days suck but this?
I hope things isn't one of those apology this give us a hd Zelda toilet paper, and dual release Zelda wii u on the nx
I'd buy it, of course i would buy almost anything Zelda related! Hope a remake is in order though and not just a simple port.
It's probably a Wii digital title.
Im guessing it's either a test or else an eshop re-release, like with SMG2 and Pandora's Tower. I feel that it's too early for a TP remake/HD release; I'd rather see something like FSA first since it's one of the few Zeldas that I don't have access to.
Yeah probably just the Wii game. I'd much rather the Gamecube version though, or just Skyward Sword, but maybe that'll come later.
Wii Zelda's were my least favorite. So glad they're spending time porting these over as opposed to SNES games /sarcasm
D-I-R-E-C-T.
D-I-R-E-C-T.
D-I-R-E-C-T.
I wish it was Skyward Sword, though. Anyway, I'm actually hyped to play a HD Twilight Princess...
HD or its pointless for me. That horrid 480p on my 60" will make my eyes water. 1080 at 60fps or bust!
I've recently been loving Majora's Mask HD. I will be buying Xenoblade X and might buy triforce hero's. I never played Twilight Princess and would love to, but I don't know when is find the time to
Wishing for a dual HD release with Twilight and Skyward Sword. However SS seems a bit too soon. Twilight desperatly needs this. However I may be in the minority here but I really really want a third in the OoT and MM and have them all be in HD perfect zelda right there
@leo13 Majora's Mask HD? Isn't it 3D?
You know....Nintendo should have had a Twilight Princess HD remake in the cards when they finished WWHD. It would not be a suitable replacement for a new Zelda this holiday, but good enough.
@VeeFlamesNL yes I guess that's what happens when I try to watch football and type at the same time
I think it would be a solid move, for those that didn't get it. Although they need to give the option of using the gamepad or gamecube controller for this game. I own it on both game cube and wii and I really enjoyed using the gamecube controller. In HD, this will be very worth it.
They've been porting Wii games to the VC. I'd say it's that. SD port. Like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and such.
I'd probably buy it, but we just played through it this year so I'm not sure. Also I think it's more likely as a Wii digital release.
Thing is an HD remake with as much attention as WWHD got could really smooth over the early Wii remote clunkiness the original had.
I'd like to see an HD unmirrored version of TP with updated motion controls.
Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game! I hope it's HD; otherwise I won't get it, since I still have it on disc.
Could just be VC
It's likely a port, just a downloadable version of the Wii version like every other Wii game on the eShop. No doubt to fill the void Zelda Wii U will be leaving.
If this was to get a HD Remaster, I think it'll be saved for the successor to the 3DS to really show off what the new system is capable of (i.e HD Games on the go.) but for now, I'm certain this reveal is just a port.
Mind you, if you were to add GAMECUBE GAMES Nintendo and put up the rare, pricey and motionless GC version of TP, I think you'd make waaay more money then just a download port of the Wii version, which you can find physically for £5-10 anyhow......
Meh. I'm happy for the people who do like Twilight Princess, but I feel that it's the most lackluster of the series so unless there's physical special edition I'm gonna skip this one. The sunrise over Lake Hylia will look beautiful in HD.
I agree with quite a few comments I saw on the way down here, if it marries the GameCube versions 'left handed Link' and traditional button controls with gyro aiming I would be sold day one. I missed out on this one, and I was spoiled by the gyro aiming in OOT3D and refuse to wield a sword by waggling a wiimote.
Fixing Skyward Sword would be a great idea too since I also missed that one, and it's still too expensive for me to consider buying either. Twilight Princess is dirt cheap on Wii, but the version I want on GameCube regularly sells just the disk for about the price of a new game. My only real experience with these games are from Hyrule Warriors, and I gotta say it reinvigorated my interest in the series.
HD remake, day one buy and would fill my Zelda lust until next year when Zelda U finally comes out. If its just a lazy Wii VC, which I suspect it may well be, I shall pass
I can't see it being anything other than a Wii VC release but you never know.If it is to be an HD remake, what are the chances of it being out for Xmas?Would they announce something as late as this? If it doesn't come until into next year then maybe it's to soften the blow for Zelda U being dropped from Wii U altogether as I can't see them releasing a remake and new entry within a few months of each other.Personally I wasn't a huge fan of TP on Gamecube but if it's an HD remake I'll definitely give it another shot.
An HD release couldn't hurt, I guess.
@Discostew Not likely. The Wii digital titles use the game's Wii HOME Menu icon as their Wii U HOME Menu icon. So this is either a remake, a placeholder, or fake.
It's just the placeholder image for Zelda CDI faces of evil HD
I wouldn't mind buying an HD Twilight Princess if it's more like the Gamecube version (Non-mirrored world), the only Wii feature I'd like to return is being able to point or use gyro controls for the bow and update the motion controls so it makes use of the Wii Motion Plus.
HD remake would be nice, but I'd rather have a Super Mario Sunshine remaster, that gme would look so purty in HD, and FP view gyro controls for FLUDD. Think I would skip Wii diigtal, feels like I just played it. Though it should still be on there for all the 100 million people who owned a Wii but somehow didn't play TP and the 10 mil Wii U owners who have never played it. That's pure sarcasm BTW.
Why does everyone think this would be an HD remake at all?
If it is listed on the eshop it is by FAR more likely that this will arrive on the eShop as a rerelease than a remake. Otherwise why would they have taken the risk of someone finding data of a title that hasn't even been announced yet, probably won't be released within the next three months (otherwise this would have been E3-material) and would normally be announced in a surprising and hypestatic way.
@Iggly Knowing Nintendo, they'll either cater to the people who played the Wii version, but maybe Hero Mode could un-mirror the world?
@OorWullie You expressed it better than I did.
The idea in your last paragraph scares me, since it would make the Wii U the only Nintendo console without a unique Zelda title. This would mark it even more as a black sheep and cause a riot with or without Twilight Princess HD.
I cannot imagine them doing this to us.
Twilight Princess HD on Wii U wouldn't be that much of a solace, since it is playable on the console anyway.
Glad people have pointed out how this could be the best version of the game because of buttons for swordplay and motion controlled gamepad for arrows and slingshot. I hadn't thought about that but it's absolutely true.
If it is a windwaker type remaster, I really hope they make a feel little tweaks as well. Like maybe put some more stuff in the overworld?
Hoping more for a remake, so we get the not-flipped-out GCN orientation and traditional controls, with waggle worked in as an alternate control scheme.
Lol: Data Miner....that's just a fancy way of saying Hacker!
@Tsurii That rumor is over a Smash character though. The only other thing is that this same dataminer, NWPlayer123, is predicting a Direct for this Wednesday that'll reveal the playable Octoling update for Splatoon. That's separate from the rumors over a Smash character.
Twilight Princess is the next in line for Remaking. Here's hoping it's finally coming.
Of all the Zelda games that needed it, this one probably needs it the most.
@IceClimbers I'd sure love this to be true. Whether HD remake or not, I truly muss Nintendo Directs. =/
Why is everyone focusing on the icon? The title for the eShop entry was found as well.
Am I seeing things or is title ID 000500001019C800 really "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Twilight Princess HD"?! seems like pretty straightforward info to me.
OoT, MM, WW got remastered. So it makes sense TP is next? I don't think Skyward Sword needs a remaster as it's still looks good, Twilight Princess isn't.
If a Twilight Princess remake is on the way, I hope Nintendo adds Link's Crossbow Training as a minigame on the File Select screen. They probably won't, but it would be cool if they did.
I would love this. I think I now actually prefer this game to both Skyward Sword and Wind Waker. Was just thinking how I wished I'd never sold my Wii copy, or that they would release it on the eShop... but a HD remaster would be even better!
HD? Most likely a Wii lazy port that won't even care about setting the gamepad as a control option.
Wouldn't shock me... But then I have seen it running on a WiiU.
I'm hoping this isn't even a wii port, but rather the start of gamecube releases! Of course, a wii release would make more sense, but since this game bridged the gap between gc and wii, maybe just maybe this will make the way for gc vc titles!
I would love a HD remake of Twilight Princess, but since I never got to play Skyward Sword, and can't find an affordable copy, I hope they release that one on the VC.
For me, I believe the phrase "Shut up and take my money" applies here.
@ajcismo likewise. I'd take any excuse to re-play my favourite Zelda game, let alone a HD remake!
Maybe it is for virtual console but i would preffer a remake in Wii U, with option to use wiimote/nunchuk like the wii edition.
@Tsurii @jariw
Bear in mind that "Am I seeing things or is title ID 000500001019C800 really "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Twilight Princess HD" is not confirmation of anything. Not unless there's a title ID converter that I don't know about somewhere.
there is zero chance that this is an HD remake
Every time I play this game I keep thinking that this is my favorite Zelda game thanks to the best combat system of the traditionally controlling games. It always felt like a spiritual successor to Ocarina of Time and considering that I consider that as flawless as a game could get I think that played a large role in my enjoyment of the game. Thougn I won't purchase it again this would great for those who haven't played it yet.
I would love an HD remake. Twilight Princess is my favourite Zelda game. But I would assume it's just a digital Wii game. It's still a good thing though.
@Zeldamaster97
I agree.
Pointer controls in Twilight Princess made aiming easily.
I Definitely would be quite ok with pointer and buttons.
Though I would love it if they could add Skyward Sword's 1:1 motion controls for the sword.
Why do people think this is an HD remake... We've been getting Wii games on the Wii U, this will be the Wii version.
I'd love Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword HD on one disc. Nintendo aren't that generous though PS4 owners get The Uncharted Collection which has all three games on one disc, XBOX owners get Halo Master Chief Collection - come on Nintendo why don't you treat us for a change.
@ikki5 I think we just want to believe it's a HD remake although deep down we all know it's really only going to be the Wii download version
@ikki5 Because this isn't the same icon as the other Wii games on the eShop.
For me nothing will top Skyward Sword. Im sure this is just a straight port and I probably wont get it. Didn't like TP much.
@wazlon Great point!
@gcunit Zhuowei found the title as well (with the "HD" at the end) on the Japan eShop. The info was added here yesterday by him:
http://wiiubrew.org/wiki/Title_database
(And if you look at the conversation, the ID+title was found first, then the icon.)
C'mon, just let it happen.
I would hope it'd just be a digital release of the Wii version like SMG2 and Metroid Prime Trilogy in January. That said, if it is a HD remaster then Zelda U is almost certainly no longer a Wii U game and this is Nintendo's apology.
It's much more likely that it is a simple port, rather than an HD remake.
Even though I have bought this game twice, once when I originally owned the Wii and then the Nintendo Selects version when I returned, I would be tempted by an HD version with Gamepad functionality. Otherwise, my disc version still functions fine.
Most likely a Wii download. And even if it is a remake of some sort, then Nintendo is doing this way too early. What is this, the generation of Zelda remakes? They've already remade 3 of 5 3D games!
Absolute favorite Zelda game. Will purchase in whatever form Nintendo releases it in.
Why an HD remake? If true, this will likely just be a Wii version playable on Wii U, just like the other Wii games released so far.
I think it’s more likely to be a VC kind of thing. But I wouldn’t buy it because of the sound - I replayed it and think the game is awesome, but that sound just doesn’t cut it for me.
I’ll be interested in a remaster, though. Especially a HD one that is gamepad friendly and has that midi audio replaced with proper sound.
Just curious but, can eshop Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the likes be played without the Wiimote and using the gamepad/pro instead? My guess is no, but just making sure.
I've always thought that Twilight Princess HD should have been a Wii U title instead of The Wind Waker HD. Twilight Princess has awesome and detailed visual art that would extremely benefit of an HD remake. Never too late, I would buy Twilight Princess HD day one whether it's for Wii U, NX or whatever. On the other hand, I don't think the visuals improvement in The Wind Waker HD justify a premium release. Anyway, I got it for free when I bought Mario Kart 8 and I played it (again). The frame rate issues around the islands with cannons shooting were still there...
I hope its true. I would love to play HD Twilight Princess with gamepad controls like what Nintendo did with Wind Waker
I'll buy if it's an HD remaster of the GameCube game. If it's the Wii version, I'll pass.
@Discostew This is what I think as well.
It'll just be the Wii version with inferior motion control won't it? Nothing to see here.
"The salt is on standby" Seriously? Is there any need?
Besides, I thought the old rumour flying around was about a 3DS Twilight Princess remake? Don't see them doing both but I know which one is more likely. Would still prefer it on handheld though.
IMO in terms of graphics, TP needs the remake/HD remaster because the original just doesn't look that great, or hasn't aged well, which is most likely due to the realistic art-style, which was better suited to HD than SD. SS on the other hand, is fine because like with WW, it's art style makes it timeless, to where it'll always look good.
An HD remake would be an instant buy from me, but the odds are stacked much more towards this being an asset for just a port, which would make a later remake pretty unlikely. So this find makes me sad.
@japongt
Only if the game supported the Classic Controller on the Wii
Wii VC nothing more ... nothing less
I would be extremely surprised if we didn't have every Zelda title on every platform in the Wii U VC before Zelda U releases. I will absolutely get this and Skyward Sword.
The game that needs remade or re-released is Four Swords Adventures. It's the only Zelda title not playable on Nintendo's current systems in some way.
That being said, this is definitely pointing towards Twilight Princess HD and not a re-release of the Wii version. Other Wii titles have the Wii logo at the bottom (top?) of the icon. That's not present in this icon.
Upscale the Gamecube version at least. That would be nice. And then some F-Zero and Mario Sunshine. You'll have my money. I hate TP on Wii, but love it to death on GCN. Especially after playing Skyward Sword. I rather plug in my Wavebird and fire up my GCN, looking at mud on my tv screen than get the digital eShop Wii version. If this is true.
I'd say it's probably just a VC game if it wasn't for a few factors:
1.) Wii Virtual Console games don't get custom icons.
2.) The dataminers looked in the Japanese data and found the title "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD"
So either it's gonna be a really quick surprise HD version (or a pre-load) or these dataminers are just talking out of their bums.
Umm... how is data mining the Wii U eShop servers even possible!!?
@123akis The same way people hack into NORAD and other secured databases xD
Twilight princess HD remake with skyward sword motion controls. ::heavy breathing:: My body is ready.
@123akis The same way hacking into Sony's servers (or anyone else's for that matter) is possible- lax security measures.
Lol, Nintendo isn't smart enough to do HD rereleases of their more recent primier titles. This would have probably been a GCN or Wii VC release, which may not ever exist on Wii U.
Twilight Princess HD should be on Nintendo's next generation handheld as the first of many games to demonstrate what "HD AAA Nintendo gaming on the go" can truly feel like. Would be a Day 1 system seller, at least for me.
i love how people are warming back up to TP again
It appears to be real. Zelda Twilight Princess HD was just registered on the Nintendo Update Servers. Nothing goes one there unless Nintendo intentionally puts it there. Also, it's not the same format as the Wii VC titles.
Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses plays tonight on The Late Show. They might be announcing it there.
http://wiiubrew.org/wiki/Title_database#00050000:_Wii_U_game_titles
Twilight Princess happens to be the only Zelda game I think needs an HD update. Its textures and lighting were absolutely awful and washed out in SD.
I wish I could write down things on the map, as in Spirit Tracks. Why we didn't have that in WindWaker HD is a mystery.
Haz u r right HD a must for this game!
Hate to say it, but data miners are kind of ruining Nintendo PR for me.
ALttP is the one they should do an HD remake for but in 3D with optional skyward sword controls.
@mjc0961 Just saying, the control scheme of Wind Waker HD worked great. Why wouldn't those controls be applicable to Twilight Princess?
