The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is, by popular concensus, one of the finest video games of all time. Following its original Nintendo 64 release it's appeared on GameCube and the Wii Virtual Console, while also having a fabulous remastered version on 3DS. For fans who simply can't get enough of it, however, it's now coming to Nintendo's shiniest system.
The EU-based Legend of Zelda Facebook page has confirmed that Ocarina of Time will be coming to the Wii U Virtual Console in this week's upcoming Nintendo Download Update. Europeans may also hope to get the US version for some 60Hz goodness, but we'll have to wait and see on that score - Nintendo of America hasn't confirmed it for its region at the time of writing, but it hopefully won't be far away.
Are you planning to pick this up yet again, or perhaps for the first time? Let us know.
With thanks to Anthony for the heads up.

As great as that sounds, I'll stick to the 3DS version, which I still have.
The game I really want to hit N64 VC is Smash Bros and hopefully the US version.
I'll be sticking to the 3ds version aswell.
@Jazzer94 The one I'm wanting is F-Zero X with full N64DD expansion kit included.
For me, this is great news...
I was gaming on the original PlayStation when this was originally out on N64...
As I don't have a 3DS, I think will definitely be picking this up...
It'd be cool to get the 3DS enhancements to the Virtual Console game, but I know that's asking for too much. I'm looking forward to the North American release!!!
@Captain_Gonru
That game is great, and I have it, but it contains a glitch which prevents 100% completion, but they did include a secret code, which helps get around it.
@Grumblevolcano That would be awesome to.
Nope, 3ds is the best. Maybe if they but a good price, but no.
Interesting for them to releas this on the VC while they have the 3D version (which is superior in nearly every way) on the 3DS .... are they now trying to cut their own sales with their own software or are they just not that invested in what happens to the VC?
I would rather see more games in general that are a biot more obscure on tthe VC .....
Its £1.49 for the upgrade so I'll be downloading it for sure.
If people here also owned a Wii back in the day, why didn't they download Ocarina Of Time the first time? The 3DS remake was years away.
Excitebike 64 anyone? I'd like more unreleased VC games.
How about some ... oh wait there were like 5 good games on the N64 Mario 64. OOT, Paper Mario... Smash Bros... Ogre Battle?
What, in recent experience, makes you think that a NA release is 'surely not far behind'?
@Bass_X0 Personally speaking for me it was due to having both the Wind Waker preorder disc, and the Zelda Collection disc for GCN. Both had OoT, and ran on Wii. I'll stick the 3D version myself.
Can't say I ever want to look at this version again after being spoiled by the 3ds version that's for sure.
@Captain_Gonru
Really I thought it applied to all copies of the games worldwide. It involved collecting all the hidden gold in each level. There was this one piece of Gold I couldn't collect and I would just walk right though it. When I found out about the secret code years later, it said this code allows you to go to the secret level, I wasn't sure if it had anything to do with the gold.
Press Down, Up, Z, L, Down, Left, Z, Down on the select title screen and select a save file.
@Captain_Gonru There was a glitch that prevented you from getting all the gold trophies(?). It was one of the farm levels. You could get it to appear, but would walk right through it.
Even with the glitch, I would have to second Space Station Silicon Valley, as that was one of my favorite games on the console. Wasn't it made by Rockstar though? So wouldn't the chances of it getting released on the virtual console slim? Of course there weren't a ton of third party games released for the 64 on the Wii, so it would be slim either way.
@Josaku From what I've heard the 3ds versions been out of print for quite some time. Good luck trying to find it cheap anywhere!
I don't have my 3ds copy anymore so I might get it! I would rather get star fox command though since I have not played that game before.
I wonder if this means we'll also be getting Majora's Mask despite there being a remake.
I want it. And Majora's Mask too.
I'm glad they're pushing more of these out. I'd love to get all my Wii versions upgraded with some new stuff thrown in. A bunch of old PS2 Star Wars games got put up on PSN recently, so I wonder if we could see Rogue Squadron.
I'll upgrade on the cheap (already own the Wii version), if NoA ever releases it here.
There used to be a day that when a game was announced for Europe, that meant it was coming to North America. That day has passed, it seems.
"Pandora's Tower", "The Last Story", and now "Devil's Third"?
"Hopefully" being the key word. It'd be another game for me to upgrade, but, like I figured, N64 on VC dropped as soon as DK64 was released. Still waiting on Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64, and Yoshi's Story.
I got an N64 for Xmas and plugged in my old cart determined to finally complete the water temple. Still stuck there 😐
With all this Ocarina milking, Lon-Lon Ranch is gonna go bankrupt!
Yes, will upgrade my copy! Just need Majoras to be released so I can upgrade that as well. Looking forward to the Miiverse communities of these two.
Also would love to upgrade my copies of F Zero X, Yoshi's Story and Chrono Trigger.
@Grumblevolcano
I doubt we will get F-Zero Expansion stuff. I don't think its even possible.
I want:
Yeah... I'm gonna stick with the 3DS version. If they ported the 3DS version to the Wii U, I'd bite, but not the clunky original.
Hmmm... Let's see... I own:
1.0 gold Collector's Edition cartridge (N64)
1.0 super rare grey cartridge (N64)
1.1 grey cartridge (N64)
Two-game Master Quest Bonus Disc (GCN)
Four-game Collector's Edition Bonus Disc (GCN)
3D remaster (3DS)
My favorite video game of all time! This will be a day one by when it hits the American Wii U VC. The obsession with this game... Is real with this one...
I've already got the 3DS version, so there's no need for me to buy this. This should absolutely be a must have for anyone that hasn't already played this game before.
My Nintendo 64 is broken, so I'll probably get this to hold me out until I eventually get to buying a new one.
@90sRetroGaming I own the grey 64 cartridge, the Gamecube Collection and the Wind Waker special edition Master Quest.
This would be my fourth time buying it! (I hope it's Master Quest version)
@vitalemrecords eh??? You serious? Lol add anything by rare to that list plus a shed load of my other childhood games lol.
I'll definitely pick this up, as I don't own the remake for 3DS or the Wii Virtual Console version. NA release please!
I doubt that it will be the 60Hz US version since this is a pretty dialogue heavy game. If this is only available in English, miiverse will probably go crazy.
@vitalemrecords
cough cough star fox 64, goldeneye, f-zero x, conker's bad fur day cough cough
Goldeneye and Conker won't come to VC so they don't count in this instance.
I'll buy it for a $1.50 because I prefer playing this game on a console, even if the 3DS version is prettier.
With thanks to Anthony for the heads up.
Happy to be of service. Thanks for the mention
Don't have OoT 3D so I will be getting this even though I have already played it around 50 times, but it's only 2$ since I already have it in the wii Menu
As for the game, yes its been rereleased a million times before but the game IS of great importance so deserves the attention it gets. I'm just glad it got released on the Wii U VC because that brings hopes we're see Starfox 64 up there soon (And thankfully, Nintendo's solution isnt something like "Oh go buy the 3DS Download on eShop for £40 if you really wanna play it again!").
And look on the bright side, it's out the way. Now we can move onto other N64 titles.
Fantastic, I haven't got a 3DS so will pick this up
Let's be honest, we're definitely going to be shafted with the PAL version of this game in the UK. There's no way they'll give us the full-screen 60hz version.
Paper Mario looks and plays terribly on the Wii U VC with huge borders at the top and bottom of the screen, noticeably sluggish gameplay and really bad filtering and colour balance. I would expect we'll get the same with OOT. If we do get the US release I'll definitely buy it, but otherwise no.
I've got a feeling NA will see this before Zero Mission. It's great for those who don't own the 3ds version, but since I do, I'll have to give this a pass.
I never played this game when it first came out,I'll get it when it comes to NA
Wow, yet another reminder of how far (or not far) the VC on the Wii U has come. Like, seriously... shouldn't we have had plenty of N64 games by now? Not to mention GameCube games. What happened to that? Or am I the only one that naively expected GC games to have rolled out onto the VC by now? ..sigh* :/
Was fun playing again on the 3ds, wish A Link to the Past would come to 3ds VC!
How many N64 VC games are there now? There are so few , and no GameCube games. They don't seem to care, and the 3DS VC is completely abandoned. They should get to work.
Never played it, but I have the original, SNES outing, Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess so it seems like a good idea. I do hope the Wii games will turn up as downloads as well eventually.
For North America, it will be 3-6 months after Europe gets it if not longer. We STILL only have half the story of Golden Sun.
Not really interested in a VC game I already physically own. Nevertheless, it's an amazing game and a recommendation to everyone who hasn't played OoT yet.
It sad when the Wii U's N64 Virtual Console is so bad, that we just now getting oot and that would only make 4 N64 games since the 4 or 5 months since N64 Virtual Console been annouced.
@90sRetroGaming what's rare about the grey cartridges?
I'll be getting this as my N64 game cut out last time and it put me off going back again.
@Goginho I really wanted to see GC vc as well. So many great games on that system.
@Grumblevolcano
That would be awesome, I too am waiting for that game along with MK64, Smash Bros, and Starfox 64.
I have the 3DS version, but it'll only cost me $2 to upgrade, plus I can try some glitches I haven't been able to do on the remake.
@Spoony_Tech @Josaku Download form the eShop problem solved! /s
@PrincePeach92 just get the vastly superior 3ds version, but off the 3DS eShop.
@Spoony_Tech - I'm waiting for the NX remaster.
Dammit Nintendo. You're going to make me buy this again aren't you? -_-
@90sRetroGaming Wait, a 1.0 Grey cartridge is rare? Maybe I should sell mine... never!
I always wondered why everyone says that their original-fire-temple-music version is the gold one when mine is grey.
Like everyone else, if you happen to come across a 3ds version, better stick with this one. IMO, much better, funnier and on the go. the defenitive version of ocarina of time with a great master quest mode. don't waste your 64th copy of OOT on the wii u version which will give you nothing more than the one you bought on wii already
@Peach64 that would be awesome - and GOG.com recently got lots of DOS Star Wars titles up as well (including Rogue Squadron) so it's certainly possible.
On the other hand they've still not put the SNES Super Star Wars trilogy up yet, even though they were on Wii VC..,
@DarthNocturnal Are you sure EA have licensing rights for old LucasArts Star Wars games? I thought they just had an exclusivity for new Star Wars console games (which turns out not to be completely exclusive, cf. Disney Infinity 3.0).
@rjejr Good luck with that!
Yeah, I still haven't done the 3DS one, yet. Money, time, lack of enthusiasm for tiny-low resolution screens with cramped controls that only one person can see at a time. But I will one day, I think.
This single announcement pisses all over everything that was announced by Nintendo at E3..
Must have buy for me
@dethmart Really? That much better than Nintendo E3? It's like being excited about the gba version of Super Mario World. OOT. Another version of a game already available on wii and 3ds digital stores.
@icedude545 I recently went back and played OOT on my GC to compare it with the 3ds version. "new" 3ds xl may not have a massive screen, but the game looks vastly better on the handheld.
@Bass_X0 Because downloading games didn't seem interesting in the Wii era. I never even once used the predecessor of the eShop (can't even remember its name).
@Spoony_Tech: Well then you should take a look at Zelda in HD, with hi-res textures and anti-aliasing. That totally spoils you for good.
@vitalemrecords: That's totally untrue, ther were tons of good games!
I will be upgrading my wii version fo sho.
We will get it when we get Zero Mission on Virtual Console... RIP NA
I hope we'll soon see Mario Party 2, Super Smash Bros and Majora's Mask on Wii U!
@BulkSlash I'll definitely get it if it's the 60hz version!
not sure if i want 3ds version now that the N64 version is on Wii U (and cost less then 3ds version which is 40 dollars,) so maybe now that this is coming to wii u it won't cost much,
I'd like to get a new 3ds for the remastered version, but I'm not sure what the status of the 3ds will be a year from now. I guess I'll have to buy the wiiu vc, if I buy it...
Even though I have the 3DS version I'm planning to upgrade the Wii Virtual Console version I have. Spending $2 to get save states and official off TV play will be worth it imo
Will download this for sure, but I just wish they would give us Pilotwings 64
Good game, but....ehhh.... not crazy about something that has already been digitally released before, much less been remade. Good for those who wanna upgrade it to using restore points and stuff, of course.
Excite Bike 64 please!
@Grumblevolcano I would love it so much if they included the Expansion Kit!
With so little time (pun not intended) passing between the 3DS remake and this announcement, I'm afraid we're witnessing the Nintendo kind of damage control. I always thought we would have never gotten Smash on a handheld or a Mario level editor on a home console if, respectively, the 3DS and the WiiU didn't face trouble before (heck, should the DS have faced the same hardship as the 3DS during the latter's first year, we would probably have seen a downgraded, portable Brawl as well), and this is likewise suspiciously generous. It's not as blatant as, say, the Ambassador Games for the 3DS, but once you consider Donkey Kong 64, the first two Mother games getting rereleased worldwide, GBA and DS games rereleased digitally on a home console... you kind of get the picture, the list goes on. Thing is, on other platforms, usually things don't come out as a last resort in order to win back the crowd; here, however, Nintendo waited for four New Super Mario Bros games to come out before giving its fan base the "car keys" that everyone unwilling to use Lunar Magic has been waiting for - and if the WiiU wasn't so in trouble (I'm not falling for either the "we decided to turn our editor into a game" or the anniversary thing), Super Mario Maker would have been saved for another emergency.
I can play Zelda OoT on almost any available console, including Wii U WiiVC ... yet 2 months later no zero mission in NA; which is only available in a GBA cart in NA. Legit, NoA
Again?
As great as this game is I already own the original, gamecube disk and 3DS version. I think that is enough for me.
I'll pass, the 3DS version is the definitive version.
I hope more N64 VC Wiiu games are coming as well as Wii ones. They haven't annoinced anything yet
Not a chance I would play the N64 version again after playing through the 3DS version. 3DS version vastly superior. Love it in handheld form and the remake is just too damn good.
@Bass_X0 i loved zelda on n64 and had a wii with a huge amount of vc games but never had ocarina on vc. Why? Because of my sweet gamecube zelda collectors edition disc and also the free copy of ocarina with master quest i got with GC wind waker. Both worked on the wii so more than covered
@Bass_X0 exactly my reasoning. Here N64 are $2 USD to upgrade so really is not that bad.
@minotaurgamer I know!! So far only 3 n64 and 3 Wii games on the VC library in North America. I really hope they can focus on 5 VC catalogues better
Kind of a shame they're likely just going to retread ground here with VC releases. Would love to see something like F-Zero X, or another game that hasn't been released or ported before.
Great for those who don't want to shell out 40 bucks for OoT3D. Game is a classic (as it always will be), so it's good to have it on a current system.
@GLA Most grey cartridges (sans the "1999 Player's Choice" version, which are all grey) are version 1.1.
This version fixed the Swordless Link glitch, the final Gerudo Thieve outfit color change (in version 1.0 the final Gerudo Thieve's outfit would change and match the color of Link, depending on which ever color he was wearing at the time), among other glitches.
Not many grey 1.0 cartridges exist out there compared to gold Collector's Edition 1.0's.
Is the VC version edited? Like, is it an exact replica of the original cartridge? The more its different than my 3DS cart, the more I may treasure my download.
Buying the upgrade, probably will continue to buy every version till I can't hold a controller anymore.
Great another port of the same game with slightly different things........I remember when we had Zelda SNES and NES, and GB Zelda. GB Zelda was colorized while NES Zelda got an revamp. All these years and SNES Zelda finally gets an third story.
Otherwise I do not really care. OOT is still the same N64 OOT game.
im getting it, but i was hoping for the 3ds version to come to the wii u
I own the 3DS version and two copies on the Gamecube so I won't be buying this again.
I've got the Wii Virtual Console version so it won't cost me much to get the Wii U version. I'm looking forward to having the Rumble Pack functionality working again. Hopefully Nintendo will keep finding ways to add more of the classic games that didn't make it to Wii and restore some of the functionality that wasn't there in the games they did have on that system.
If there's no jump from awful FPS count to at least 30 frames I'd say this is a joke. Game is pretty damn unplayable outside a N64 and its nostalgia factor. Just saying.
OoT 3D is the superior, definitive version. It also includes Master Quest.
After playing the 3DS version i find it very difficult to go back to the original. It's got all of the best stuff of the original version with improved visuals and improvements to certain other aspects of the game (Iron Boots). So I'll just stick with the 3DS remake.
The only thing I don't like about the 3DS remake is the censorship. I can understand removing the chanting in the Fire Temple and the removal of the crescent moon and star symbol... but changing the blood in the final battles from red to green? Really? It's a nitpick but it annoys me.
@rushiosan I'd agree outside of the fact it's on a handheld. Home console versions are always the true definitive version and so I instead vote for the bonus disc that came with Wind Waker.
@Josaku some1 might only have wii u so they cant play it on 3ds or any other device.
Gamecube VC almost confirmed for this time next year, Nintendo obviously just wants to milk Wind Waker HD for a while longer like ocarina of time on 3DS.
"Surely not far behind for NA" They still haven't given us any new Wii titles and we still don't have Metroid: Zero Mission which Europe got many months before. Nintendo hates releasing things for us now.
When it releases in North America I'll definitely get it because... well, I mean, it's Ocarina of Time!
@Josaku Nintendo no longer produce copies of Ocarina of Time 3DS. That's why the cost of a second hand copy is going up.
Glad to see them release anything on the virtual console anymore. I will upgrade for $2 on my 2nd Wii U system that has all my old Wii data (hence being able to upgrade to the Wii U version) but I probably won't bother downloading it on the main Wii U that we use.
OMG! Perhaps my number one favorite game EVER! I've played it and beaten many times. I would download it in a heartbeat.
@90sRetroGaming i agree 210%. Rock on!
I played the 3DS version recently and found myself thinking "this isn't as great as it used to be". For its time it was epic. But it's got some clunky story elements and pacing problems. Where as I can still play LTTP any given day without issue. I know my opinion is in my minority but I just wish people would take off the rose colored glasses and critique the game for what it is.
@BigBabyPeach from what game is your profile pic i played it when i was a kid but cannot remember the name
@VR32F1END The VC version IS edited from the original. It's a modified version of the GCN port, which is a modified version of the 1.2 N64 copy ("1999 Player's Choice Awards" version), the final N64 version of the game released in the states.
The VC version is the GCN port, with simply a couple more edits. The Fire Temple theme is still the altered version with the Shadow Temple sound effects and the crescent moon and star symbol are all replaced with the newer Majora's Mask symbol. The crescent moon and star symbol can still be seen on the ceiling in Dampe's grave, though.
You want the original version without edits, you're gonna have to track down a 1.0 or 1.1 N64 copy of the game.
The grey one is rare. Well, that's pretty sweet, I still have and am playing mine and I have the box which is mint. Not that I'd ever part with them 😊
Nah, fed up Nintendo's emulators lacking in features and the rip off prices. It looks and plays best on a real N64.
Just port both 3DS versions and release in 1080p. Even keep the 3D available for those with 3DTV.
@Mona-Reggie You're right - I missed StarFox - F-Zero is pretty good too. That about wraps it up though.
@deemdadim Sry, just figured out notifications.
It's Impact from Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for the N64.
