Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Seems To Quite Like The PS4

Posted by Damien McFerran

Isn't it nice when everyone gets along?

Masahiro Sakurai may be famous for working on Nintendo hardware, but that doesn't mean he can't say nice things about the company's rivals.

Speaking in his regular column in Japanese magazine Famitsu, the Smash Bros. director heaped praise on the Sony PlayStation 4, describing it as "good-looking" and capable of visuals so convincing that "you often forget that you're playing a game".

Here's what he said:

Let me begin by saying that I don’t care for faction wars like Nintendo versus SCEJA.

PlayStation 4 is good-looking, the DualShock 4 is light and using it feels good, Remote Play can reliably handle even action games, and the network functionality is well done. The machine power is another attractive factor, there is no loss of detail in the image, and it looks so natural and spontaneous that you often forget that you’re playing a game.

It’s a good thing if creators can make stylish games without putting in a ton of time on that. I hope that a masterpiece will come with bells tolling. This is definitely not a period that will leave us without the possibility of playing rich games.

Sakurai is currently hard at work on the latest instalment in the Super Smash Bros. series for the Wii U and 3DS. What do you think about his comments? Let us know by leaving one of your own below.

If only the console fans would get along as well...
Internet would be a much better place.

It's nice to know that there's at least someone mature and open-minded in Nintendo to admit that the competion is on the right track. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo need to respect and learn from each other because that's the only way they're going to learn and grow. It's too bad that most of their ''fans'' can't learn the same lesson.

Captain_Toad said:

Heh, who says they have to hate a competitor's console? There's nothing wrong with trying new things.

IRNBRU115 said:

What he is hinting at is... The PS4 doesn't really have a killer reason to get one yet... Totally totes mcgoats agree with him on everything else though

unrandomsam said:

I don't think 30fps remote play is good enough. Or it looks particularly good. (Or is powerful enough for the time it was released - considering it is going to hold back everything else for 10 years or whatever).

I have no issues with the controller though.

darkswabber said:

just ordered a ps4 becease of the lack of third party support for the wiiU.
was planning to buy watchdogs dedsec edition for wiiU but since it got delayed i'm changing my order to the ps4 version.
also all the multiplatform games i want are going to be wiiU for me, unless they get delayed like watch dogs. I don't like waiting XD

Superiorspider said:

Sakurai now understands that there is something better than the Wii U! Here's to Sony victory on the crusing Wii U defeat!

Kyloctopus said:

I enjoy the PS4. I have one in my house. However I find this the ugliest home console ever conceived. Why is it a rhomboid? Why does it have weird Tron Lights? I still get confused when pushing the power button, because it's both very thin, and not even a button.
Regardless, the system has alot of promise and it won't get me from not playing the PS4's arsenal.

Jorzha said:

Not really interested in a ps4 at the moment. The ps3 is still getting the games i want so I don't need it. I'll probably get it when company's like NIS america and Atlus start making games for it.

Peach64 said:

I'm pretty sure it's only kids that can only afford one console that have the fanboy mentality anyway. I like games, and I could never imagine depriving myself of a console and it's library 'because they're the enemy'.

PS4 might be stuck with a bunch of cross-gen games right now, but I think in a year or two it's really going to shine when the shackles of 360/PS3 ports are off. Same goes for Wii U in a way. It will probably only be Nintendo doing it, but hopefully soon we'll start seeing games where they're used to the extra power, and are more willing to be creative and take risks instead of just looking at their big selling franchises.

XFsWorld said:

@darkswabber yeah that's another reason why PS4 sales are strong because WiiU owners want a system with great third-party support. And the XB1 is $500 and less powerful than PS4.

PS4 deserves to dominate.

Wilford111 said:

It's pretty cool! The only thing keeping me from getting a PS4 is that there aren't any games on it that I want.
I'm waiting for games like Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III

Megumi said:

"I don’t care for faction wars like Nintendo versus SCEJA"
That's all I gotta hear.

awaitingreatnes said:

As a day 1 adaptor of both PlayStation 4 and Wii U, I love both. I'm really looking forward to Infamous Second Son in a couple of weeks, and Mario Kart 8 is going to be a great game with friends.

Nintenjoe64 said:

I think he was subtly trolling the lack of games Also, if he's had time to play on a PS4 with his busy work schedule and sore arm (blatantly from too much online Wii Tennis and Bowling), I'll be disappointed. I thought Nintendo devs were not allowed out of their cave until games were finished.

Joking aside, PS4 is clearly going to be the best system if it gets the games we expect it to but it has a long way to go to come close to competing with a Wii U-PC combo and remote play is all well and good in Japan or Korea but most rural broadband in UK is not fast or stable enough for game streaming.

shingi_70 said:

Dude owns every system as far as I know. I remember there was aninterview where he said he owned 10 PSPs because he can't stop buying special edition models.

MikeLove said:

Not surprising. He knows the Wii-U is a sinking ship and is merely casting his line in the direction of the mighty S.S. PS4 in hopes that they take him aboard.

SakuraHaruka said:

When "ths fans" fight for their favorite console, sometimes, developers and directors (or president) enjoy the good points of the rival's console, XD
Well, also I prefer the ps4 (only to pay for online gaming is not good...), however, for me, still I don't find games there, well, except for NFS Rivals) but later there will be more games that interest me.

AceDefective said:

@Yasume That's really subjective. The PS4 is missing out of the box backwards compatibility, which sucks because I want both KH3 and Persona 5 on one console. Also, I like how Sakurai says he likes the PS4; then everyone turns it into a console war argument.

AVahne said:

I don't even have a PS4 or the intention of getting one anytime soon, but even I can tell that it's superior to the Wii U in almost every regard. Only things that Wii U has over it are a better streaming technology (though the Gamepad's screen is VASTLY inferior to just about every single other modern hand-held/mobile/portable screen other than the 3DS) and Nintendo first-party games (mostly Mario Kart) and third-party exclusives.
Wii U also has true backwards-compatibilty, however PS4 is region-free so that more than evens out.

DreamOn said:

The man invented Kirby, a pink circle with even less detail than a snowman. Naturally he's not threatened by an 8GB RAM console. Or literally any console for that matter lol.

Also, when he mentions "faction wars" he's commenting on how Sony behaved towards Microsoft at E3 last year.

Chubblings said:

I hope more fanboys realize this. They can fight all they want about "enemy consoles," but Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo all have "rival consoles." I think Reggie said a few years ago that he had 360 and PS3, yosp (Shuhei Yoshida) has 2 Wii U's, and I was recently at a lecture, where a Microsoft head said he owned a Wii U and PS4

rjejr said:

Nintendo verses SCEJA?

What are the odds he actually spelled out S.C.E.J.A. during an interview, or even said Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan? Why not just "Nintneod vs. Sony"?

I know, I'm wierd.

OK, how about this:
"Sakurai is currently hard at work"

um, apparently not too hard.

yuwarite said:

I still believe that when Steam Machines / TVPC's become a ubiquitous thing in the marketplace, PlayStation's and XBox's will become redundant.

darkswabber said:

@XSfWorld well that's true, but most of them are like me, first support go's to wiiU, ps4 gets support for the games not released for wiiU or the delayed games. the reason that i won't buy a XBOX ONE is becease i don't like xbox, not the price, and the xbox one has yet to be released in the Netherlands.
and I still hope that when the moment comes that Nintendo completely falls, their games will become playstation exclusife. That doesn't mean i hope Nintendo will fall XD.

TheotherM said:

To be fair, Sakurai doesn't actually work for Nintendo anymore. He's a third party developer now. That's right, a Nintendo-centric game is being developed by two third party companies..

ricklongo said:

Fanboy wars are nonsense. I could see myself eventually getting a PS4, if it ends up getting a good number of games that 1) appeal to me and 2) can't be played on a PC or Wii U. Not ridiculously likely, but it could happen.

Expa0 said:

Once it starts getting either turn-based Jrpgs or fighting games that aren't also available on PS3 I will consider it. PS3 had a slow start, but after 2012 it became a really solid system.

FritzFrapp said:

Have they been overdoing the painkillers for his tendonitis? The PS4 is almost as ugly as the Xbone.

TruenoGT said:

I'm happy for those who enjoy them, but I don't see the point of PS4 and XB1 generally. Neither has unique, compelling features (IMO), and neither will have many games that don't also arrive in superior fashion on PC. At least Nintendo tried something different with Wii U, though sadly it appears most people just want more of the same with slightly upgraded graphics.

SammytheSaiyan said:

A few years later: "HAL Laboratory purchased by Sony"
NO! It's Microsoft's acquirement of Rare all over again!

readyletsgo said:

Sure doesn't one of the Sony presidents have two WiiU's? Think it was the European Sony president that talked about it last summer

MamaLuigi said:

So why not join Nintendo and Sony together to make a console that plays both Wii U and PS4 games? Doesn't mean they have to merge. It would be like that Panasonic Q only dual formatted... XDD

AceDefective said:

@Yasume I doubt every game, including very recent games, would actually be on PS Now. Even then I'm totally not convinced of streaming games, I'd rather actually own them. Can't we all just love video games? Why must we fanboy over everything?

marko said:

Thats why I like Sakurai,
The man at Nintendo working on Smash bros doesn't care for the gimicks just good hardcore gaming.
He is the right man to build Smash Bros. Also he is not ashamed to admit when the competition is making a good system...
I just hope he never jumps ship and joins Sony

TheAdrock said:

So you're saying that a high end console can look good, perform well, sell tons, cost a lot, and make a lot of money for the manufacturer... how odd. I wonder if that formula could work for Nintendo? Naw, probably not, best to stick with under-powered old tech and hope for the best.

ValentineMeikin said:

I feel that Sakurai is like Inafune-san was when he began developing Mighty No. 9, and Harada-san was when he outright zero'd all essential DLC profits on Tekken Tag 2...

"I like the PS4, It's a good system."

He's willing to say 'Bury the hatchet already, even I don't need to deal with it, I like a competitor, so what?'

GraveLordXD said:

@Yasume what a stupid thing to say! really like what? My ps4 is collecting dust with nothing but resogun to play while my ps3 is getting all my attention with dark souls 2
Least the Wii u has games quit thinking about the Wii u so much and maybe you won't have nightmares about it and you can quit coming to NL to constantly post hate about a system you don't like

DerpSandwich said:

I'll give the PS4 all that...except good-looking. Come on, the thing looks like a robot eraser out of some 80's sci-fi! XD

Rafie said:

I knew the comment section would be....interesting to say the least. The man just said he liked the PS4. It's not blasphemous to like something other than Nintendo. Sheesh folks.

@Peach64 EXACTLY! Every time something comes up about the competition, people get their underwear in a bunch. It's not that serious.

electrolite77 said:

"though sadly it appears most people just want more of the same with slightly upgraded graphics". Judging by the way NSMBU, Wii Party U, Wii Sports Club, DKC:TBF, Wii Fit U, Dr.Luigi, Zelda WW HD etc. have failed to sell the Wii U, I'm not sure that's true.

SuperiorYoshi87 said:

Maybe he should stop wasting time playing PS4 and finish Smash Bros. already I'm tired of waiting.........

SCAR said:

None of the 8th gen consoles are making their respective company any money. Also, if Wii U is old tech, then so are the Xbox One and PS4.

TechnoEA said:

Not in the least bit surprised by the comments. So much for Nintendo Fanboys being the more mature of the four.

Personally I cannot wait for inFamous Second Son in 9 days. I still think the Wii U is an amazing console and plan to pick one up when SSBWIIU comes.

I feel the PS4 has more games worth playing TO ME at the moment. SM3DW and WWHD isn't enough for me to warrant a purchase right now. Not to mention I'm have friends all over the world the Wii U and mostly limits itself to local play.

lamco said:

Hmmm, i still haven't gotten a ps3 ps4 looks like a great console, but the problem is that there is no games that capture my interest as of now, so i'll make up my mind about getting one much later on (me being me, maybe 5 years time )!

Capt_N said:

@Peach64: Actually, not all young adults have the finances to purchase more than one system, or even just the one. Regardless, I always tell people that I'm the type of fanboy that doesn't insult other gamers for their tastes in games, or their system(s) of choice, & that I call out Nintendo when I think they need to be. Also, I go on to explain how I feel Nintendo isn't perfect, & other co.s have done, & still do things deserving of praise by the gaming community as a whole.

@ricklongo: I actually feel the same on that, though I still want to get a WU.

@electrolite77: To a degree, I kinda did, too. But in a polite way. Though, I feel for the most part he is legitimately praising the PS4, & nothing wrong with that.

Edit: @EveryoneElse: Also, I would imagine opinions on the form factor of the PS4, like most consoles/handhelds, is divided. I kinda like it. On the other side of the coin, I think the XB1 looks like a VCR. Again, it's all opinions, though.

TruenoGT said:

@electrolite77 Good point on the various Wii U "HD" releases, it is true. Generally the market is so weird right now, it's hard to know what will sell outside of the occasional mega hit. It's going to be interesting to see what ultimately drives non-early adopters to the PS4 long term.

MeloMan said:

Even though Sakurai has developed for Nintendo systems, he is still a freelancer and can develop for anyone (though his dev co. folded last I read). In a way, I think it's a subtle way of indicating he also might be ready to test "other" waters. Helluva developer, good luck to him wherever he goes.

dumedum said:

sounds like trolling to me. Remote play is extremely laggy and sux.

TheAdrock said:

@SCAR392 "...if Wii U is old tech, then so are the Xbox One and PS4."

Wii U hardware is comparable to PS3 & 360 but came out SEVEN YEARS LATER! Comparing the U to the PS4 is like comparing 8-bit to 16-bit.

People keep saying that all the U needs is some great games... yeah well where is this library of "great" games that are driving the sales of PS4? crickets
Oh right, its a media conspiracy to "keep down" Nintendo... except in the case of the DS that theory falls apart.

All I'm saying (and have been saying) is that Nintendo is way behind Sony in terms of technology and IMO they should be spending boat loads of that war chest to catch up or they will become Blackberry faster than you think.

Sidewaydriver said:

He has brought shame to Nintendo. He must commit seppuku in Miyamoto's office to atone for his indiscretion.

unrandomsam said:

@theadrock13 Spending all that money is exactly what caused the trouble for Blackberry. Nintendo are not even at the point where they can ever be bothered letting people buy everything they want.

BinaryFragger said:

I never understood the console fanboy mentality. What is it about consoles that turn people into immature and irrational whiners?

Just look at what's happening with Titanfall recently. The PlayStation fanboys are saying it's "just another FPS" or "just another COD clone... boring!!" yet if you look at the Call of Duty sales numbers, those games sell like crazy on Sony consoles (CoD Ghosts sold almost 8M copies on the PS3). If Titanfall was cross-platform, they'res absolutely NO way it would get as much hate as it does.

Another recently example are the 2013 gaming awards. When Nintendo wins an award, it's "yay Nintendo!!" but when Sony wins, awards suddenly don't matter and the judges are bribed. Completely irrational.
Just enjoy the games! Gamers should be happy about all the terrific games being released instead of bickering about nonsense.

Zeldamaster97 said:

You don't need a powerful system to play good games. Gamers today still stand 64-bit games like Zelda Majora's Mask above games on XBox One. Some current hits, like Minecraft, aren't even 32-bit. The Wii U has better games than PS4, and that's what Matters.

NintyMan said:

I would like the PS4 too if it had more games I would care for. Right now Kingdom Hearts 3 is the only game I'm interested in for it. That stated, I still respect the system and hope it does have games that will entice me more someday.

It shouldn't be surprising that Sakurai has respect for Sony because game developers should be more mature than simple-minded fans about their competitors since they are actually part of the industry. People trying to blow this molehill up into a mountain need to calm down. Sakurai will always be a Nintendo man at heart.

jayclayx said:

@Zeldamaster97 what matters is to enjoy games in whatever console you are playing thats make you a true gamer not a fanboy, you cannot ignore the ps4 just because the wii U has better games right now, do you remember how the wii U did in it first months? good games are everywhere and Sakurai is mature enough to recognize the ps4 is a good looking young console.

ricklongo said:

@Capt_N If you're like me in your gaming preferences, you should totally get a Wii U! Say what you want about it, it's a great platform for fans of that good old Nintendo magic. I keep being utterly blown away every time I load Tropical Freeze (taking my time with it, still in world 4). The troubles with sales, marketing, and consumer perception are really unfortunate, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a great machine with lots of amazing games already out.

Haywired said:

Agreed. But of course, at the time you did need a powerful system to play Zelda: Majora's Mask, as the N64 was (to quote Nintendo's slogan): "the fastest, most powerful games console on earth". That game couldn't have been made on less powerful, older systems like the NES and SNES. It needed the power of the N64 (the Xbox One/PS4 of its day). It's all relative to the era.

Skyfox2000 said:

What's it matter Sakurai Likes the PS4! Sony President Yoshida owns 2 Wii U's and he praises SM3DW.

OdnetninAges said:

I actually want a PS4, as Kingdom Hearts 3 is on it, and it'll likely have some exclusive Sonic &/or other Sega games that I'll want. I do want a PS4, but I want Wii U more. I'll likely get a PS4 when KH3 comes out, and I have enough money, but right now I'm still trying to get a Wii U.

Is there something wrong with that? Is it a crime to like more than one console? Seriously?

DarkKirby said:

Sakurai obviously said Smash Wii U/3DS is his last Smash game because he wants to work on Playstation All Stars 2.

electrolite77 said:

Probably not the best example given Majoras Mask was on N64, a system that was entirely designed to be the most powerful of its generation and even by the time of MM's release had only been surpassed by the Dreamcast

Senario said:

So many Anti Wii U trolls in here. Can't you people find something better to do with your time? Also, not sure how this means he is moving elsewhere. He is just saying he enjoys a system. Not that he is developing games for them.

Williaint said:

@Andyliini if you took out all the stupid console arguments, the internet would be a very empty thing.
I don't think any less of Mr. Sakurai. I'd probably play a PS4, if I had one, or even had money for it...

I know for a fact people out there thinks this will happen and other people will say, well no poopoodoodoocacapoopledoople sakurai will like the ps4 its great and better than the wiiu in so many levels.I do like that people in the industry are not talking trash about each other like adults and not children.

Rafie said:

@Zeldamaster97 Agreed. I would rate that game above most games. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time. If they (Nintendo) HD remade that in the futre, that game could very well sell millions. No doubt.

G3ry said:

Im mad not mad of him because of the console wars, he maybe liked the interface and graphics and all, BUT I am mad because.....
ps4 has no games, or it does unless i want the "new" fifa game, and the "new" battlefield game and the "new" assassins creed because its not like I dont have ANY other console or machine that can play the same games.
....and yes maybe him saying that will help not sell more Wii Us

FilmerNgameR said:

If you're really not a fanboy, it truly should make no difference in anything. All three 1st part companies have their strengths and their weaknesses. Nothing wrong with having a favorite, but wanting to put other companies and people down because they don't favor your personal pick is well......if you don't know how to finish that sentence, you may be a "fanboy" and not realize it lol

SCAR said:

Xbox One and PS4 are comparable to the OG Xbox, because of ×86, so what's your point? I'm not debating the software situation. The situation is different for both consoles, and while I agree Sony has put more tech into PS4 than Nintendo has for Wii U, that's a matter of quantity, not age.

@BinaryFragger I can't speak for others but Titanfall's a tricky one....I don't hate the style of game at all and it looks gorgeous but it's not a system seller to me at all. Why? Because it looks like an extremely shallow experience, basically multiplayer and nothing in the way of storyline, character building, anything like me, it's just the modern day equivalent of Quake 3 Arena. I can still revisit Quakes 1, 2 and 4 and enjoy them...Quake 3, not so the online component has dwindled, it's exposed the game as a pretty looking but empty shell. Hopefully in a couple of years we'll get a sequel which will be the game the first Titanfall should have been, but this isn't it IMO.
