@Reztobi I was just ribbing antimatter. That said, someone posted that the Switch sold a half million units in Europe. Yeah, it’s down 35 percent from last year, but fairly respectable given the age of the system.
@ninty_junkie77 that’s an interesting thought, but reflective of the times then and now. It would be difficult for Nintendo to have both a handheld and dedicated home console now. Look how much MSFT is struggling against Sony with near unlimited resources. I did think that it would be intriguing for Nintendo to release a dedicated home console, then in essence have the Switch be handheld. Maybe even have the Switch interact with said home console as a third screen. The main reason it is selling so well is that it filled the need that the other two couldn’t….a console experience on the go.
You are probably right about software when taken together, but Wii Sports notwithstanding, it seems this allows for a better environment for franchises to thrive- Animal Crossing, Zelda, Pikmin, Smash etc. seem to be doing better separately.
I kinda like the idea of what they have been trying to accomplish. I don’t have any interest in the hardware, but I did buy the collection. I might occasionally pick up a game like Gravitar Recharged or something else if it’s worthwhile. I would love a modern rendition of Paperboy. Klax was a lot of fun too.
It will be subscription/live service oriented….. I hope there’s a base game, plus season pass that can be purchased. They will have seasonal updates with tournaments and mini-games, somewhat like Tour. I hope they have new characters and IPs….Kirby, Star Fox, Fire Emblem, Bayonetta, Xenoblade, Metroid tracks and circuits….
@Croctopus it was confusion over the name. Lack of marketing. I also think that it was poorly timed bc tablets and phones were where a lot of casuals went. Why buy a WiiU when I can get a tablet or just play games on the phone? It also didn’t have the killer app.
Conversely, the Switch was the killer app in and of itself. The ability to play console games on the go is pretty much what sold it.
I was a little surprised with the lack of sales bc I had a 20 year absence from gaming and thought the GamePad was amazing, even if not completely portable. I was also very impressed with the graphics bc I had last owned a SNES. It freed up the TV and allowed me to still spend time with the family. I figured there was an audience for this functionality, but I guess not.
@DonierGunad you raise an interesting point….i have so many games, it’s just not possible to complete all of them. I really need to taper down buying games and appreciate what i have more…,
@Poodlestargenerica I wouldn’t say awful, but it was fairly disappointing. Dk, Pirrana, Rainbow road and bowser were good tracks, plus funky Kong, Duffy and new Mii suits were cool. Not all disappointment……
This is tough. I think 9 is definitely too high. I am far from a graphics guy, but the textures on half the courses look so cheap. A lot of the tracks a rather boring. For as much $$$$$ that this has made. (Probably $4 billion with WiiU numbers included), more unique tracks should have been made, especially for those of us who have been fans for nearly ten years now.
That said, for the price the value is unmistakable. Love the new characters. It has added about 25 hours for me and I could see myself playing another 25 hours easily. There are some good to excellent tracks, so it’s difficult to not recommend this. I want to give this a higher score, but it’s hard for me to overlook the cheap and laziness here by Big N. So, I think a 7 on the low end- 8 if I am feeling generous. This could have been so much better with just a little more effort.
@johnedwin I bet Mario will have more longevity as far as sales. And if you are a Ps5 owner, exclusives are pretty rare. So it was probably more of a day one purchase. I know at least a few people who intentionally put off Wonder for Christmas
@Croctopus that was a cool game except for the weird controls…. It would be the perfect remake/remaster. If they do a late 2024 launch for the new system, I wouldn’t mind seeing this as a spring or summer title
It’s hard to complain about the DLC here in that they provide great value at just $25 and have extended the life of the game. That said, they included too many Tour tracks- some were pretty good but most were boring. Given that this franchise going back to the WiiU has made $4 billion plus for Nintendo, I wish they created more original content.
@JakedaArbok 1-2 Switch and the sequel nobody wanted were such a travesty. I could maybe see paying $10 for those if I really had money burning a hole in my pocket….as much as I love the Switch, Nintendo really dropped the ball with budget and mini games….
@JakedaArbok I wish Nintendo would do more mini game, smaller games like street pass, Rusty’s real deal base ball, steel diver etc. I think there’s a market for these games in general, especially at the price point of $10-$40….
@JakedaArbok I see what you are saying. But the flip side is that Wario is even cheaper filler material than Kirby- I love Kirby, but it seems like every time I turn around, there’s a new Kirby game.
@larryisaman I love Wario and mini games in general. But I don’t have many opportunities to play with friends and motion controls are kind of a turn off for me. Throw in that it should not be priced more than $30, if that and I will wait for a sale if I decide to get it at all.
I have mixed emotions about this….i love innovation and the dual screen, but as mentioned, would it come at the cost of battery life and portability…..?
I remember Colecovision, but I don’t think any of my friends had one. Most of my friends had the 2600. I thought it was cool, but not enough to beg my parents for one. I ended up with the Atari home computers, first, the 400, then the 800 or 1200xl. Those were pretty cool for home gaming.
@Lizuka exactly. I am pretty much exclusively handheld mode. I don’t really have many friends to play with either. I love Wario but I don’t think I will get this unless it’s on sale
Well, I don’t think this statement is meaningful if it doesn’t translate to backward compatibility. Who cares if I can just log into my same account just to have to repurchase old games. Otherwise this doesn’t meaningfully make for a smooth transition in any way, shape or form….
@sanderev I would pay a fee to be able to access older games from other systems like MSFT….I hope at least Switch games will be accessible on the next system. That would really add value to NSO.
They could treat the Switch almost like a handheld…and the new Switch for more sophisticated games. They can still sell to their massive install base on certain games for casuals….this way they keep people locked into their eco system….
There’s too many performance issues due to weak hardware on the Switch. We tend to overlook this bc most of the time, we are happy to just have a port of a game on the Switch than not. But even Nintendo’s own titles are starting to struggle.
Nintendo is probably thinking that it can sell more systems by forcing people to upgrade, but I think the opposite will be true. I would rather wait for the library to grow if this is the case.
@Enigk I agree with you. That said, I can’t imagine that many people doing this. If they are a fan of the series, they probably already have it. A lot will double dip like I did with Advance Wars.
@samuelvictor I like and still get physical copies. I am moving more in the direction of digital tho, at least with Ps5 and Xbox. I like the idea of a complete edition for certain games. So maybe in certain cases this will make sense, if for no other reason, preservation
@samuelvictor the problem with physical these days is two fold- games are becoming so massive- some take two disks. Worse tho, is how they are constantly updating. A disk is almost becoming useless. Even with Nintendo and smaller games, there’s always an update….
@larryisaman this is how I see it. I have barely used mine in docked mode. I suppose I could get a pro controller, but I don’t like the joy cons unless attached to the system. Let’s be honest here, when compared to even an Xbox One or Ps4 it’s really much mor like a handheld that can be played as a console than vice versa.
@Keman to be fair, I don’t think the rumor was that the new Switch was as powerful as a Ps5, but rather, that the games look just as good and run as smoothly as a Ps5….just guessing that they managed to accomplish some things technically to achieve similar results with less power.
I am not expecting anything too big if for no other reason, Nintendo is probably saving the big hitters for the next system. My guess will be some random, out of the blue Game Cube remaster in addition to an F Zero remaster….
@Grumblevolcano sad? It has only been nearly a decade since we have had a proper console Mario Kart. The Tour tracks are mostly meh….a new entry is long overdue….
