@Serpenterror Oh wow, I didn't know that it was delisted. Glad I picked it up a few years ago on a sale!
The versions in that collection are straight up ports of the originals with no fixes, features or enhancements though, outside of the rewind and save anywhere features included in every game.
Without the random battle encounter rate turned way down and experience and money gain turned way up, I wouldn't touch those games with a 10-foot pole.
@abbyhitter Just pulled out the Wii U gamepad to fire up a game on it for the first time in nine years, lol. My GamePad charger cable has a short in it that gives the controller a very weak and inconsistent charge, if it does it at all. Luckily, I also have a Wii U Pro Controller, but for some stupid reason Nintendo deemed it necessary to have it require its own cable that's not compatible with the GamePad.
I was walking around my home mad last night, talking out loud to no one and saying, "Nintendo, what the **** were you thinking when you made these things?"
It reminded of of jumping for joy when this very site mentioned the Switch would use standard USB-C. I don't even know where the original cables are for my Switch and its Pro controller; I use laptop chargers half the time.
@Metazoxan You're going to love the site Deku Deals. Not only can you filter out games to never see them again (unfortunately, still no option to hide devs/publishers to get rid of games en masse) with an interface that loads eons faster than Switch 1 at least, but you can also wishlist games and get email notifications when they go on sale, and set parameters on those notifications like physical or digital only, or to only notify you when a sale reaches a certain threshold like at 50% off or when the game is at its lowest price ever. I've saved so much money this way.
It'll also show you each game's price history to see how often games go on sale: you'll start to see which games and publishers frequently put their games on sale and get a feel for if you can wait for the next one or a further price drop, if you should go ahead and take advantage now. Again, I have saved so much money thanks to this and no longer have FOMO.
I promise I don't work for and am not sponsored by Deku Deals, lol.
@DoorToMundane Yeah, any version of Maximum Carnage without the original soundtrack is an abomination. You can say the same about any of the games in this collection (Arcade's Revenge and Silver Surfer are dumpster fires but I still listen to the OST from time to time), but MC's OST was next-level for its time.
@Rhaoulos I was just storming the castle yesterday and fought the two Lynels in the gatehouses. A chest appears after you defeat them as a prize; I remember one being arrows and the other being a weapon, but you still don't get typical Lynel drops.
Can't remember if the chests were always the prize after defeating them or if they were patched in.
@Olliemar28 Best of both worlds. Some games I want to try one time and never touch again, some games I want to pay to own and not worry about anyone taking them from me.
@Kiz3000 @Tonik Wow, I heard there were other people on this planet that have never played Skyrim; never thought I'd run into them on this site! Lol
Every time I consider getting off of the fence, the jankiness of the combat ends up turning me off. There seems to be no hit stun or collision detection on enemies. So whenever I read these updates on Skyrim ports getting worse over time, I feel more justified that my limited gaming time is spent elsewhere.
Count me among the folks that thinks shorter =/= bad. Sounds like a good time can be had after a nice sale, and like Andee said, so many games that you can get hundreds of hours out of vying for attention.
You want to get me to login and comment for the first time in like half a year, you start talking about Ogre Battle 64, lol.
I will argue until my dying breath that this game (perhaps series) has the greatest writing and plot of any JRPG in existence. It's not another, "Hey kid with ridiculous hair that is unique from everyone else on the planet, take this sword and go save the world". There is true world building, character growth and political intrigue. The main character, who is not a silent MC, feels highly grounded and relatable. The stakes feel real. The plot advancements sensible and well paced.
And to think, when I first played it after renting from Blockbuster for a weekend, I HATED that first hour of it. I had never played anything like it, so I didn't get it. I'm so glad that I stuck in there and gave it a real shot. I ended up renting it six times over the course of several years before finally realizing that I should probably save up and buy it, haha.
My dream is to get a remake of my favorite JRPG of that era in HD-2D with a number of enhancements and gameplay fixes. It's a really longshot, but the dreaming is free!
I wouldn't call the Wii version a port. It was pretty much a full-blown remake with different graphics and art style, a different POV, and a different tone.
@Fizza Hawlucha is my favorite mon of all time! I was concerned that I would hate the design before the reveal, but I think it's pretty solid. GameFreak didn't overdo it this time, and Mega Hawlucha looks like it could have been a natural evolution to base Hawlucha (now that I mention it, that's what should have happened, lol).
@Ganner I'm not far behind you in age. I remember that period of time in console history when a numbered Final Fantasy game on a Nintendo console was a laughable, asinine fever dream (outside of ports of older titles to portable consoles).
I remember a few short years ago when it was a huge deal just to be able to say that you could now own Final Fantasy VII on a Nintendo console, on a plastic and silicon card no less.
So I will gladly take FFVIIRI at a stable 30fps on a Nintendo device. Just give me the entire game on the card, please.
@Vyacheslav333 Well that's a bummer that makes the port less attractive for me. Maybe adding Quest Mode back is what they meant by the "more" content being added later, lol.
@Pigeon I still have my GCN original, but it'll be nice to finally be able to play it on a modern television. I'd prefer that the Switch get the HD remaster that includes Link, Spawn and Heihachi, but I won't complain about being able to play Soul Calibur II on the go.
@WarioInAHardees I'll be the one to give you a straight answer and say yes, MH Rise is a good jumping in point for a beginner. It's the most beginner-friendly entry in the series (I haven't played Wilds, the one that just came out on other platforms, so that may not be true anymore, but it was true when Rise launched).
There's a demo for it (and a seperate demo for its expansion, Sunbreak) in the eShop that you can try as well. The gameplay loop is pretty simple, but if you're a completionist like me, you can get hundreds of hours out of it. The demo gives you the opportunity to try every weapon type as much as you want in two (or was it three?) separate missions against different monsters of different difficultly levels. There will be more nuance to the game that what you will have in the demo, but it covers the vast majority of what you will be doing in the game: hunting monsters.
@PessitheMystic I had the opposite experience; I loved the Wii version for its motion controls and kept thinking throughout the experience that it would be awesome if a Wii sequel removed the time-stop whenever you're using the celestial brush and let the game stay in real-time the whole way through. I also enjoyed the combat more than on other versions because once I got used to it, I felt it added a sense of timing and rhythm akin to Crypt of the Necrodancer and Paper Mario instead of just mindless button-mashing. It made me more mentally present for each battle.
@Serpenterror I spent a week on La Mulana about six years ago, and that game broke me so hard that I'm still suffering PTSD from it to this day. It has permanently scared me away from games that earned their reputation on being ridiculously hard... like Celeste and Blasphemous.
I say all this to ask how you would compare the former to the two latter? I know Celeste is more of a platformer akin to Meat Boy, and Blasphemous is more about action than puzzle solving, but still. I just can't do that to myself again, not with my OCD about finishing games and the guilt I feel abandoning them.
To all the people saying Nintendo will/should sue, how? Does Nintendo own the exclusive rights to the fonts, themes and type of gameplay featured in Animal Crossing?
"However, there's no denying the fact that Secret of Mana is one of the finest console RPGs of all time"
I'm denying it. Secret of Mana is absolute garbage and is the most overrrated JRPG of all time. The developers thought it would be a good idea to give enemies an invincibility window after getting hit, so battling common foes comes down to wacking, waiting, wacking, waiting, wacking, waiting. It's not fun. Charging attacks past Level 2 is pointless. Most of the weapon types are utterly useless and outclassed by better ones with no redeeming qualities. Your AI-controlled companions are idiots that are constantly getting lost or stuck on walls and corners. It's one of those old-school RPGs where you can only restore MP via a limited supply of items, so you spend dungeons doing basic attacks to save items and MP until you get to the boss. And when you get to the boss, the main character becomes useless because he can't use magic. And the strategy for the majority of bosses is just "spam the best spells and use items to recover MP, repeat." The original English translation is boo-boo and a chunk of NPCs speak nonsensical gibberish that don't help move the plot along or direct you on where to go next. The Mode-7 scrolling when riding the dragon is such a pain in the butt to control and land in the right spot on the world map.
The game sucks and deserves to die in a fire. And you know what's funny? It got a remake a few years ago on PS360 that no one remembers or wants to remember because of its Dreamcast-quality graphics and gameplay that fixed few of the aforementioned problems above.
@Dev1024 Wow, if you replace #3 with "Powerful Mario" (when he has the Wing Cap and #5 with Bob-Omb Battlefield, you have my top five!
@Not_Soos Finish that drink and meet me out in the yard
@anyone Whoever chooses the accompanying graphic for all of the tracks on the app knows what their doing. You can't have Dire, Dire Docks without that scary *** eel that will forever live rent-free in my nightmares.
All of those reports from the past (especially in the Wii U years) used to make me wonder how any company would ever let this walking PR nightmare anywhere near a social media account. Dude needed (probably still does) some serious help. I hope he actually got it.
I love me some Deku Deals, but even it is missing the ability to block entire developers/publishers wholesale instead of having to hide each game one-by-one. I saw a ton of those hentai games show up in the Latest Deals section the other day and I started to block them, then gave up when I realized how vastly outnumbered I was, lol
For as long as this game has existed since my childhood, that pissed off shark with the boxing gloves has made me either burst out laughing or chuckle every time I see it. Now I can make it my profile icon!
@Daniel36 You gotta put an asterisk behind the DL in that "DLC" though. That game was a download-only WiiWare title that had all of the content as part of the game download, and if you bought the DL*C, you were just changing a value in the game's file that made that previously locked content now available. You weren't downloading it separately from the base game.
In fact, if you bought the game at launch before the DL*C was available, you had to redownload an updated version of the game that had the content because it literally could not be bolted onto the base game as a separate download.
A WiiWare game could pull that off, so I guess by technicality, some Wii games had "DLC" that you already downloaded, but just had an extra paywall in front of it with a key. Are there any disc-based games that had DLC that you're aware of?
In hindsight, one of the awesome things about the Wii was that the console didn't allow for DLC, so we had an extra generation of not having to deal with that manner of garbage practice from greedy publishers.
@Tyranexx Thanks for summing up exactly why Prime 2 is my least favorite of the trilogy. I don't hate it, but it's the one I remember forcing myself to play and finish instead of excitedly looking forward to it every day.
In addition to the inability to properly explore the dark world until later in the game, my least favorite thing was how it felt like the Russian nesting doll of fetch quests was too layered to remember the objectives - to get past this gate, you need these keys, to get these keys you need these macguffins, to get these macguffins, you need these... and so on. I am well aware that is the basis of every Metroid, but P2 took it to the logical extreme.
@DarthXenos Yeah, it's almost like if the publisher would have allowed the devs to truly apply themselves during the original development, they wouldn't have gotten such massive backlash and wouldn't have to spend years after launch getting the games up to an acceptable standard.
You'd think these people in the industry would learn by now, but new day, same song.
@bloody_velvet I'm in the same boot. Woot is offering TotK for $45 USD, which is the cheapest it will probably ever be, but I keep thinking, "What if?". "What if Nintendo does a Sony and remakes/remasters a game one generation later?"
@abbyhitter It was less than a decade ago when we could lock our phones and YouTube continued to play music without a hitch. Google greedfully locked that "feature" behind it's paywall to make YT Music more attractive. I've been using this hack ever since though:
1. Download Firefox 2. Install an ad blocker like uBlock Origin as a FF extension 3. Use YT through Firefox 4. After your video starts minimize FF or lock your screen. The video will of course stop playing. 5. Hit play outside of FF using any method you have available, whether that be on your headset, your car's stereo, using the convenient shortcut from the phone, etc.
As long as you don't have a bunch of other open apps chewing up available memory and processing power, it'll play where you left off. I discovered this by accident shortly after Google started this garbage practice to push you to YT Music/Red, and have been doing it across three different phones in that time. I've never tried it on an iPhone, but it worked great on BlackBerry (RIP) and Android.
@NeonPizza You'd think Sega would've learned something after all of those botched Genesis/Mega Drive mini-consoles that the Brazilian company puked out to much deserved backlash. Then Sega did the one smart thing it does every few years and got M2 to handle the Genesis Mini, lo and behold, everyone loves it.
Sega and Nintendo, stop being idiots and just go get M2 to handle your retro ports. It's really just that simple.
I'm hoping that in addition to its entire library of authentic OSTs, Nintendo adds orchestrated, remastered, remixes and all kinds of other versions of music to the app as well.
@AmyTheBrawler I associate Krystal with Star Fox failure; everything went to hell once that furry bait showed up.
Yes, I hated Adventures. That piss-poor discount Zelda clone sucked. I don't need Fox running around pretending to be Link anymore than I need Link's crossbow training.

Re: Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Receives A Surprise Update, Here's What's Included
@DarthXenos Yeah, it's almost like if the publisher would have allowed the devs to truly apply themselves during the original development, they wouldn't have gotten such massive backlash and wouldn't have to spend years after launch getting the games up to an acceptable standard.
You'd think these people in the industry would learn by now, but new day, same song.
Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD - Best Pre-Order Deals And Cheapest Prices
@anoyonmus It's an uprezzed port of a Wii game, so it better run smoother than silk.
Re: Nintendo's Black Friday Offerings Includes Discounts On Games, Joy-Con, And More
@bloody_velvet I'm in the same boot. Woot is offering TotK for $45 USD, which is the cheapest it will probably ever be, but I keep thinking, "What if?". "What if Nintendo does a Sony and remakes/remasters a game one generation later?"
Re: Nintendo Music Updated To Version 1.0.1, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
@abbyhitter It was less than a decade ago when we could lock our phones and YouTube continued to play music without a hitch. Google greedfully locked that "feature" behind it's paywall to make YT Music more attractive. I've been using this hack ever since though:
1. Download Firefox
2. Install an ad blocker like uBlock Origin as a FF extension
3. Use YT through Firefox
Re: Sega Delisting 'Mega Drive Classics' On Switch eShop This December
@NeonPizza You'd think Sega would've learned something after all of those botched Genesis/Mega Drive mini-consoles that the Brazilian company puked out to much deserved backlash. Then Sega did the one smart thing it does every few years and got M2 to handle the Genesis Mini, lo and behold, everyone loves it.
Sega and Nintendo, stop being idiots and just go get M2 to handle your retro ports. It's really just that simple.
Re: 'Nintendo Music' Update Adds Classic SNES Soundtrack, Here's Every Song Included
I'm hoping that in addition to its entire library of authentic OSTs, Nintendo adds orchestrated, remastered, remixes and all kinds of other versions of music to the app as well.
Re: Random: Takaya Imamura Ponders The Possibility Of Star Fox Zero On 'Switch 2'
