It's not that often that a perfectly good and functional air hockey video game drops. In fact, considering that the grotty arcade staple translates so readily to the sphere, very few air hockey games release in general. One of life's persisting mysteries, right there.
However, fear not Switch 2-owning air hockey fans (which I'm sure is a large demographic), as Handy Hockey is now here, it costs a fiver and, to borrow an old proverb, 'it does exactly what it says on the tin.' This re-release/remaster of 2010's Japan-only DSI title from ITL is the epitome of laser-focused game design. There is one thing to do here, and it's play air hockey. Go *insert air hockey team name*!
This lovely little Switch 2 version allows players to compete with a mixture of human/CPU opponents in matches that can be either singles or doubles. Simples. Now, the real juice is that you can also choose to play in a variety of ways, because Switch 2 gonna switch, too.
You've got normal TV play from side-on and top-to-bottom viewpoints, and you get to use mouse controls to direct your paddle. You can also choose to use a controller in regular ways if it suits you better. However, the real clincher, and the reason why this one deserves your money, is that you can play with your Switch 2 lying flat on a surface to replicate an arcade table, then sit across from each other and dig into 1v1/2v2 air hockey with zero distractions.
There are no other modes to mess with, no collectibles, or towers to climb, there's not even any emotional banter between a Godfather and his broken son. None of that. Get rid of it. Handy Hockey gives you air hockey. Full stop and/or period.
If anything didn't work well, the whole thing would collapse on its airy arse in short order and we'd have to go back to playing the grabby machine in the corner for knock-off Kirby plushies. But — and remember this game costs less than a (nice) sandwich — the controls with all the motion tech and mouse stuff are really well done. It just works. It's responsive, you can give the puck a gentle nudge or power blast. And when people (me) get over hitting things as hard as they can, well, it's quite strategic.
I've been playing four-player with my wife and kids, all using Mouse Mode, and it's the sort of thing (because of the lack of other modes or online) that's got a tabletop game purity to it. No distractions, just family fun time. My kids also played it later alone, so that's worth a mention, as it rarely happens.
It's advertised as a 120fps experience, and performance-wise — as you'd expect for such a simple game — everything is good. And it looks fine, too: clear, concise, and easy to parse. On the negative side, it would have been nice to have a bit of character added via avatars and persistent profiles for players to keep a history of their play. A few different tables would really help things from growing stale, too.

Thanks for the review (and so also reminder for me to get this) - it's nice to see a DSi game and even more so one that used to be exclusive to Japan rereleased on Switch 2 and with all the features you'd expect to see on the new system at that!
Thanks for this, PJ. Convinced me to give it a whirl.
Absolutely hilarious review in the best way, and I will 100% be snagging this! My mom isn't a huge gamer (though I often play DKC and NSMBW with her), but she loves air hockey! It'll be great. Odd that it got "only" a 7 given the lack of Cons, but hey, I'm not picky anyway!
Just ordered it! Will play later. Looks a great game for a blast!
Like I said in a previous article, if I get a Switch 2, this is definitely one of my first purchases!
"Puck around and find out"
I dare any readers of this comment to replace the p with an f in their head 🤣.
Is 1 of the TV modes split screen w/ 2 or 4 players each looking from their own end of their half of the screen? I'm not spending $100 for another pair of Joymouse for 4 player but we could do 2 player and take turns like in an arcade. It's really the only way I want to play. I think some older tennis games used to do split screen like that but it's been awhile. Thanks to anyone who can answer.
Isn’t there an air hockey in the new jamboree?
Sounds like it’s exactly as advertised, perfect. Can’t wait to give it a go
Handy hockey? Am I the only one that thinks that sounds hilarious? And yes I just bought it. Sounds like a fun game. But it also sounds like something else Handy hockey!
@rjejr no split screen
Also PSA if you buy this game, you must put the joycon2s in horizontal solo mode, to trigger mouse mode. The game isn’t super clear about this.
@CaleBoi25 probably got a 7 because it is air hockey. Air hockey is fun but, it isnt mind blowing. So maybe they felt like it is what it is.
Came here to show appreciation for the tagline 👌
@Danrenfroe2016 You are not the only one. Its sounds like some sort of euphemism.
I can’t resist this. It uses mouse controls. It utilizes the novelty of the Switch 2. Must get asap!
Great review PJ and thanks for the laughs.
Never understood why I would want to go out of my way for mouse mode on the Switch 2, as if using a mouse is such a novelty when I have had PC's forever.
@ShieldHero fun fact, PacMan was originally named PuckMan, but it was changed due to how easily the arcade cabinets could be vandalized to say something elre....
@tapdancingtommy bummer, seems like that makes this way less fun. I was ready to buy this to play with my son, but if we can't both have that perspective, maybe I'll pass.
Played this with my sister last night, and yes, exactly what it says on the tin. Will definitely get my 7$ out of this, super fun and simple game making the most of the switch 2's new feature. Would recommend!
The mouse mode with the switch as a table (one player at each end) is broken.
The mouse does not adjust and there is no way to change this.
@Styledvinny79 Snipperclips also has an air hockey mini game, and you can still snip and clip each other.
@Talkshowhost that’s supposed to be the best feature of the game! What the hell…
Yeah think I’ll pick this up. Looks decent enough.
@Talkshowhost
Is this issue only with table top mode or all two player settings (such as when the Switch 2 is docked)?
And do you mean that the sensitivity of the mouse/cursor can't be adjusted in two player modes, or it just doesn't work for either player..for some reason?
Thanks!
@ATMVF The issue is not that the mouse mode is not enabled, it is that the orientation is all messed up.
The horizontal table mode is supposed to be so the players can sit at their side of the table and play as if it were a real table. This means the controls need to reflect this, so a slide of the mouse joy con towards the switch should move the bat 'up' the table.
This does not happen and the mouse behaves as if the Switch 2 were just being played normally and not in this unique multiplayer configuration.
This mode was the only reason I brought the game.
@Talkshowhost
Ohhhh, I see what you're saying.
I didn't think of that. I had heard about the lack of split screen which I was a bit disappointed about, but I didn't think that the game could work in the way you described no matter what the orientation would be.
I did think the game would function as it does now, dependent on the orientation, but you brought up a great point.
I've been on the fence for a couple days about buying this one or not!
Decisions..
Ha.
Thanks for your reply.
@Talkshowhost Thanks for passing that info along. So probably the 2 best potential ways to play this game aren't in the game. Sounding more like a 5 than a 7 to me. They basically should say this game doesn't actually have a tabletop mode if you can't play sitting across from each other at the ends.
@tapdancingtommy Thanks. Kinda bummed but you saved me a few $.👍
I suppose they can always update it, but until then I'm out.
The mouse feature will end up being seen as one of the best recent console gaming innovations, smaller but also more impactful than the Wii U's gamepad.
Anyone know if it will be coming to the Canadian eshop?
I am almost ashamed of myself over how excited I am to download this
@Grim I was confused as to why it wouldn’t show up for me, but that explains it.
Weird that it hasn’t shown up for us on the eShop. Only remember a small handful of games that went up on the US eShop, but not the Canadian and no clue why
I decided to buy it after some uncertainty.
I like it!
Split screen would have been nice, but playing upside down-like was alright, I personally thought.
I can see why the tracking of the bat(?) works the way it does. I think it would be harder to track if the bat didn't reflect the movement based on whatever angle the user chooses.
It might not be as realistic with some angles, but it's still fun, I think.
Split screen would be good, though, and online! Perhaps a bigger company (Nintendo?) will release their own version, along with other mouse-orientated games with online, and more features, but Handy Hockey is still fun, and very cheap to boot.
Here's to (hopefully) more mouse-y games in the future (please)!
Just bought this, looking forward to table-top mouse mode!
@rjejr @Talkshowhost @ATMVF all you have to do is pick the option on the right, the game even suggests this and it works exactly as you'd imagine
@carlos82
I haven't actually tested that particular in-game view in tabletop mode (which I assume does work for realism-purposes), but when in docked mode, none of these in-game views work as if playing air hockey for real.
@Talkshowhost Yeah that's a real bummer hopefully they will update it.
@carlos82 Hey thanks. Not as good as split screen as I'm a TV guy but for my kids who play handheld and with their friends that seems like the right way to play across a table. Appreciate it.👍
@yokokazuo ok so it isn’t just me! Nice to have confirmation, but bummer we don’t have access to it. I’ve never got into the multiple accounts on different eshop regions, so I guess it’s just a waiting game
not available in Canada...
If they ever make a pool table game they should call it "Pocket Pool".
Got this and played it for the 1st time this evening. And it’s great in many ways. Air hockey is just simple, fun and the game covers all of that.
However, personally, I think the mouse controls on this are bloody awful. It’s okay when playing up screen, but when you switch to down screen , moving the mouse towards you just feel weird.
For a fiver it’s a decent little blast that’s for sure, but I think I’ll stick with the controller. The mouse controls are just not any special. IMHO
@Danrenfroe2016 Get tho mind out of the gutter!
@Thomystic Sadly I really doubt that as very few 3rd parties will utilises the function but it’s good to see one giving it a go so early on.
I found playing up screen with the mouse was fine, but when you are at the top of the screen, you have to hit the puck backwards which is just weird and doesn’t work at all.
@BaldB3lper78 So I did play it, and I feel that it's not near as good as the old air hockey that was included with Wii Play? I think that's the one it was on. It is fun though I definitely need to make the physics better though The puck seems to go at a standard speed pretty much no matter what it's kind of strange.
@Danrenfroe2016 Yeah I agree that is kind of odd tbh. It’s fun and for a fiver it’s worth a 7/10 but if it didn’t been for the price , right now I’d only give it a 5 tbh. Good to see the mouse option being available but it’s just feels so clumsy.
@BaldB3lper78 I'm thinking that it could make Nintendo the console of choice for FPS fans for the first time since 2001.
Or it could tap into the blue ocean of PC gamers who never considered a console before. But I suppose the same blue ocean prediction could have been made for the Wii U gamepad and mobile phone touch screen users. Nintendo just needs to sell officially licensed C-shaped end table / lap desk things to make couches more mouse friendly. 😆
