Re: Feature: Here's What Was Announced During The January 2018 Nintendo Direct Mini

Emperor-Palpsy

Not surprised to see this level of whinging tonight. I suppose we’re all marketing experts, now?

With so many expectations built up before the Direct was even aired, is it any wonder that there are disappointmented folk here? You only have yourselves to blame if you begin to convince yourself that assumptions are grounded in truth.

I.e; because Nintendo confirmed that Pokémon and Metroid Prime 4 are simply in development, that more information HAD to be given today.

This was a Direct Mini; an opportunity for Nintendo to address titles that aren’t in the AAA spotlight. There is no sense piling in every project and release under their belt into one video just to appease impatient fans. That is how information gets lost or poorly communicated.

They are pacing themselves and that is a very good thing - it proves that they’ve learned something from the Wii U era. A full-length Direct in the near future will no doubt address new system features some other anticipated projects they’re working on, but even then they will hold information back for E3.

So please, let’s be a bit more realistic and remind ourselves that it is mid-January. Why I’m earth would Nintendo out of the blue start showing off footage from the likes of Pokémon or MP4?

Re: Nintendo's Norwegian Site Triggers Speculation That Bayonetta 3 And Metroid Prime 4 Could Launch This Year

Emperor-Palpsy

Why fans are so adamant that MP4 won’t be out this year is beyond me.

The only official word on the matter is that the game is “now in development”. The fact that Nintendo chose not to share any footage, or indeed show any fanfare, means one of two things; the game was not polished enough to preview, or Nintendo would rather save the ‘reveal’ for a time when it wouldn’t be overshadowed by other content.

The only thing stopping Nintendo from releasing a Metroid game for Wii U was that it would be a wasted opportunity for what is already a smaller (but still dedicated) fan base. It would make more sense for them to begin developing ideas for the game during this period with the intention of beginning developing when the Switch hardware was finalised.

Comparisons with BoTW and SMO are silly. BoTW was a dual-platform release, and SMO has a much greater appeal and is a guaranteed system seller - hence why Nintendo generated buzz on a regular basis.

Re: Ubisoft Thinks The Next Console Cycle Isn't Far Away, So Where Does That Leave Switch?

Emperor-Palpsy

The XB1-X and PS4 Pro have blurred the lines of what a generation actually is. The question Sony and Microsoft must now ask is, do they continue to deliver a console for consumers and ‘prosumers’ (enthusiasts) respectively?

It’s easy to get carried away in technicalities, but the rate at which visual performance actually enhances gameplay is probably reaching a plateau. So even if consoles continue to get more powerful, why should the consumer feel that they have to own the latest console? This is where compatibility is the sales tactic.

As for Switch, Nintendo are fortunate that the hardware is relatively simple compared to its counterparts. It therefore makes more sense to upgrade the hardware modestly and incrementally - swap the processor, possibly upgrade storage. Either this, or the Dock will the upgrade avenue...

Re: Rumour Buster: The Nintendo 64 Classic Mini Game List 'Leak' is a Batch of Old PDF Files

Emperor-Palpsy

@ThanosReXXX That's a long list of games; but how many would the wider audience consider to be 'classic'? That's the question being asked.

With the NES and Super NES, the opposite was actually true and some fans were unhappy with how other games were not included (for a variety of reasons). This demonstrates the breadth of content on those systems, and the appeal they had in different regions.

The N64 has a sizeable library of games - no-one is denying this - but the quality of the content and how regions perceive that quality differ drastically. These have to be titles that borderline household names, that a customer can instantly recognise. It would be straightforward to roll off 10-15 games of this calibre, but after this I believe that any N64 player of that day and age would struggle.

And as I previously mentioned, licensing would be a major stumbling block. The controllers, which are over-designed anyway, would have to be redesigned to make them simpler to manufacture, which then deters from the authenticity of the device.

I should also point out that I am not trying to be cynical. My first computer was a BBC Micro, which had a Winchester floppy disk drive. The N64 was borderline state of the art at the time and I have fond memories of it, but I simply being realistic in what actions Nintendo will take. A GBA Classic is far more likely, because that would incorporate GB, GBC and GBA games in one package. It also differs itself from the previous two Classic products in a positive way.

RE: PS1, I refer to the quality of the gameplay. The truth is, the PS1 had an extremely commendable library of 3D games. Inferior graphics do not hamper this.

Re: Rumour Buster: The Nintendo 64 Classic Mini Game List 'Leak' is a Batch of Old PDF Files

Emperor-Palpsy

I honestly can’t think of 15 ‘classic’ games for the N64, let alone 20-30. And that’s not taking into consideration the difficulty of remanufacturing the controller, the licensing of games and the value-cost.

I purchased one when it was released and played it right through its lifecycle; it was a system of quality over quantity. Those that did own lots of games did so more or less because the choices were limited. Many games that went on sale were poor.

As others have said, those early 3D graphics haven’t aged well at all either. Unlike the NES/SNES, there is no consistent art style that will remembered fondly in 10, 20 years from now. Games were fuzzy from the anti-aliasing, and frame rates - while just accepted at the time - are frustrating now.

Frankly I’d rather own a PS1 Classic.

Re: Poll: Which is the Best Super Mario Game?

Emperor-Palpsy

Favourite 2D was always going to be SM3. The power ups, the manner of difficulty increase/decreases, the music, the controls... all pretty much perfect. SM World is obviously a classic, but the cartoonish graphics and ease of the game was quite disappointing I thought.

Re: Random: Did Reggie Just Accidentally Reveal Switch's Next Big Game Announcement?

Emperor-Palpsy

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if an entry in the vein of DK 64 happened. There is a wealth of potential to be seized on; including the various characters with special abilities, and the focus on exploration that has already been established with BoTW and Odyssey.

DK 64 was criticised for being a collectathon even upon release, but it was also universally praised for the variety of challenges and activities that you could participate in, and to this day is why fans have so many different memories of the game.

Country, Country Returns and Tropical Freeze are all excellent in their own right, but as with many Wii U titles, Nintendo would benefit more from porting Tropical Freeze, and therefore introducing the game to new customers.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Is Getting a Season Pass

Emperor-Palpsy

Really don't understand the complainers.

If you purchased a car new, following which the manufacturer designed and manufactured extra features to tack-on, would you then storm into the showroom and demand you have them for free?... Thought not.

Show some respect - these features are not integral to the gameplay, do not fix anything, and are superfluous. They are being developed outside of the main game. Why shouldn't you pay the developer for their resources?

Re: Nicalis Would Love To Bring Night Trap To Nintendo Switch

Emperor-Palpsy

The interest towards this game is driven purely from collectibility and nostalgia. Nothing wrong with this, but it's clear that many are getting the wrong impression for what this title actually is or does.

To even call it a game is questionable; it's just a run-of-the-mill 'choose an option' title like many of the early 90s.
