Super Mario Odyssey is shaping up to be a truly groundbreaking entry in the series and fans are understandably excited by every new tidbit of information as Nintendo continues to drip it out. We already knew of six worlds (or ‘kingdoms’) that are due to make an appearance in the platformer, but Nintendo has been saying that there are still more unrevealed, and some recent art that Nintendo of Japan just posted to its Twitter shows off the look of another new kingdom.
A name wasn’t given for this one yet, so it’s being called the Cheep Cheep kingdom. One would perhaps think initially that this is art referring to the Cascade Kingdom (where the T-Rex appears), but the magenta colored moon in the image suggests this is a brand new kingdom; moons in each kingdom have a unique color. Hopefully we’ll get to see some in-game footage of this new kingdom soon, and perhaps others; there are seven kingdoms revealed thus far and Nintendo is sure to show off more as we approach release.
What do you think? How many kingdoms will there be in total? Do you like the thought of a water-themed kingdom? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Mandatory water level.
How many moons are there per kingdom, anyways?
9 Kingdoms?
Slightly off topic, but is anyone else surprised that this game has an E10+ rating from ESRB?
Yikes! Although it's good to see new stuff revealed I still hate water levels. I HATE ALL WATER LEVELS!
This water world was clearly viewable in the E3 trailer. Though not everyone was convinced it was its own kingdom, so it's nice to have the official confirmation, with some sweet, retro-style artwork. It looks very reminiscent of the Super Mario Land box art.
@NinROCK3T It's a little surprising since all mainline Mario games until this one have been strictly E, but E10+ games usually don't have much more mature content than E games do. Plus, the Mario Strikers games were rated E10+, so there is a bit of precedent for this. It shouldn't affect the audience that drastically either way; Mario sells to everyone regardless.
A modern Mario game? The very first one had water levels, and by Mario 3 when "worlds" first appeared in the way we know them now, one of them was a water world. So really, it should read "it wouldn't be a Mario game without a water world", right?
@BAN you beat me to it 😃
All the kingdoms have different coloured moons??
They're copying skies of Arcadia... which can only be a good thing NO! A great thing 😀😀
Underwater level....whoo...
The music better be nice at least, lol
I wanna see Savanna, Jungle, and Arctic levels next. And maybe a generic New England suburb level. Keep em guessing.
How about Sarasaland? Haven't seen it since Mario Land.
@NinROCK3T Are you sure you are not referring to Australia's rating system which has it at PG? Because I saw nothing in regards to ESRB. I am still betting on a E rating.
Unlike how Mario can't take fall damage in this game, he can still drown. Has everyone thought of that?
A water world in Mario is nothing new.
Being able to possess and play as a Cheep Cheep in said water world is.
@TF-Warrior Super Mario Bros. 3 actually makes playing water levels fun especially since you got the frog suit to help you progress through it faster. I believe Super Mario Odyssey would make water levels more fun since you can now possess cheep cheep and maybe other underwater sea creatures too as well as explore the sea through their perspective.
I do love the 80's/90's look of the artwork. Reminds me of when we used to get full colour instruction booklets that were full of this type of stuff.
Boo hoo to modern day cost cutting exercises!
That artwork reminds of the old school Mario games. I wish they would make another 16 bit Mario title.
Is it possible to avoid mario odessey "spoilers" somehow? Like block all articles containing Mario in the article? I don't want to know anything about the game, I've already seen too much
@astarisborn94 there's a new News article on the Switch, and it shows the ESRB rating at the bottom. E10+ confirmed!
I don't usually like underwater worlds, but it would feel odd without some sort of world like that.
I like water worlds and desert worlds
@ban Mario Bros. did not have a water level. To be clear it didn't have any levels beyond the pipe level. I guess Super Mario Bros. and onward is the "modern" mario games.
@amiiboacid They're more like the blue coins from Mario Sunshine than actual stars. So expect lots of them, with a good amount of them hidden.
@amiiboacid Supposedly there are 30 to 50 moons per world.

Of course you need a water world! So keen for this incredible game!!
@BezBot 19 kingdoms??
This became my new phone background! It also got me thinking... Imagine playing a 2D Mario with this art-style! Rayman Legends shows what you can do with great hand drawn graphics... So why can't Mario follow suit?
@Not_Soos
I immediately thought of SML, too! Would be so great to get some enemies or other elements from this Game Boy classic in the new game.
@Yasaal
Why do you hate Water level ?
The Blue color of ocean is so calming and mesmerizing.
I mean it was in the trailer, so you'd have to be pretty oblivious to be surprised.
The water world Mario theme on Super Mario 3 was nostalgic. Remaster it please!
looking forward to that sub aquatic ambient soundtrack
That artwork is phenomenal, would love that style for the actual box art.
Mario 64 had 15 worlds, and a handful of smaller levels to grab secret Stars from, Sunshine had 7 worlds, but roughly half of the Shine Sprites were obtained from the main hub world and smaller levels, trading in Blue Coins, and finding secrets hidden in each world.
I'm hoping for 8 worlds, since they seem to be bigger than they were in previous sandbox Mario games, big enough to hide plenty of Moons in. Besides, 8 worlds is the common tradition for Mario games, with the occasional exception of a special 9th world.
Underwater stages are a staple in the Mario since Super Mario Bros. (1985) Stage 2-2. The first underwater enemies, Cheep Cheep (fish) and Blooper (squid) have been there ever since and have a long history in Mario games. I think the highest point of Blooper's career was when he was an unlockable main character once, in Mario Party 8 for Wii. As for Cheep Cheep, I'm not so sure, but one in particular called Sushie was a remarkable sidekick in Paper Mario for N64.
As for stages, I'd like if the Odyssey would take you to a world we've visited in 2D before but have never seen in 3D, like Yoshi's Island (with plenty of Baby Yoshi's to take around and feed), or Sarasaland with appearances from Daisy and Tatanga, or something Wario-related, Wario's Castle/Diamond City, SMB2's dreamworld Subcon.
I don't think there's another Ice or Desert level in this game as there's one stage combining both of it already. There could be a snow level though. And probably a space/galaxy/bonus world.
@Not_Soos Oh yeah! I remember seeing Mario possessing a Cheep Cheep.
Interesting, Mario doesn't have Cappy with him.
I bet there's gonna be realistic sharks or something.
@Anti-Matter Meanwhile the mechanics and level design makes wanna vomit! blegh XD
@Smitherenez Yes that should be what the next Mario game looks like. Most people are tired of the "New" art style.
@ninkza He is the goggles.
@BezBot Bare minimum 9. I feel like there will be 15.
What a Cheap Kingdom!
If you hate water levels then you're most likely a Millennial
@JohnBlackstar lol so by "modern" we're referring to everything post-Mario Bros.? I guess technically that's right, but by this point if you're talking about "Mario" as a series, it's pretty much just a given that you're talking about the "core" series and that it really started with Super Mario Bros. The arcade game Mario Bros. would fall outside of what we'd refer to as the core series if we're going by established definitions, so I don't think it counts.
(And yes, I definitely realize that it's weird to overthink the subtitle on an article about Mario games, but here we are nonetheless)
How is he swimming underwater with that inner-tube on? Totally unrealistic.
This will be the best Mario game ever. Meaning Switches on Christmas are DOA.
@Yasaal there, there, let it go. Let it all go.
@Biff_ARMStrong Hardly. Ever play TMNT as a kid? Lots of none millennials hated that. How about Blaster Master? Shudder at that pace in any water section. Also kind of makes sense to not LOVE water levels in Mario games since it really goes against the gameplay for all other levels. You run, jump, bop for the most part. Later levels are like a molasses, less linear, side scrolling shooter. But DKC2 and the Mario 3 Frog Suit are the best example of doing it right. Play up the atmosphere with quick movement.
@Dang69 LOL! TMNT for NES is my favorite game of all time. I can beat it blindfolded and I absolutely love the water level. Water levels are apart of gaming history and they're great!
@Biff_ARMStrong Hey I didn't say I hated that water level, music was sick and it was overall terrifying to me! My point was, lots of pre-millenials didn't like water levels, TMNT being a classic complained about example. Mostly because the mechanics in water levels don't usually flow with the rest of the game. I'm glad they're there though. I like how Mega Man usually thought approached it, lot's of in and out of the water, making the entire level not too slow...and while he was sluggish underwater, the super water jumping and gliding made for an interesting platforming challenge variations. Never have beaten TMNT, btw. Not sure if I've gotten inside the Technodrome more than twice, lol.
@TF-Warrior Parkourists don't take fall damage but can still drown haha
@NinROCK3T Which article is that? I searched and I found nothing.
Edit: Never mind, I found it. I am surprised that Super Mario Odyssey of all games got a E10+ rating.
There are a lot of questions to be told. Usually in a Super Mario francises, there are 8 words. The only ones missing from Odyssey are a Sky world, Snow/Ice world, and a Lava world. Although if kingdom’s related to those themes were released, then the total count of Kingdoms would be 10 worlds. In current Super Mario games, a special world is also including which would bring the count to 11 Kingdoms. Also, in the newest trailer to Odyssey, I counted 16 Moons that went into the Odyssey Ship. That would also not make sence as for 16 x 11 = 176. That’s way more then usual. Although, if the 16 Moons that went into the Odyssey Ship was just for nice animation purposes, then maybe there are 11 Moons for each Kingdom. 11 x 11 = 120, which is exaxtly how Mario Games with Power Stars are like. I am probably wrong with my theory, but it’s hard to doubt that I didn’t think of some possibilities.
It had to have a water world, but I will have to struggle through it as I get motion sickness trying to navigate movement in the 3D Mario games for these levels.
Sorry Mitch, I hate to be that guy, but I can't help myself: "... every knew tidbit of information..."
I think you meant "gnu".
How is he diving while wearing a water donut around his waist? It just doesn't make sense...
@JJ286 coughs Ok I'm alright. XD
@TF-Warrior It was like that in the Galaxy games.
So the kingdoms we know by name are new donk city, sand kingdom, luncheon kingdom, Cascade kingdom, and Cheep cheep kingdom. There is also hat kingdom I am led to believe but I'm not sure.
Looks cool. I love the classic art style. I remember when this style of art would fill up the manuals.....loved those. I would read each manual on the way home from the store.
@Dang69 Have you never questioned why a mushroom-eating Italian-American plumber from Brooklyn would warp through pipes - to then jump on turtles and chase a princess?
Good ol' Mario water levels lol. Slightly off-topic, but I feel like Mario Odyssey might come up with a DLC model where Mario will continue to get worlds after the main game comes out. I'd love to take Mario continuously through newly thought up 3D realms, as long as its reasonably priced, but that's just me.
NES-era-style artwork, huzzah!
Nice artwork! People are always moaning about water-levels, but I actually love them. I wonder if this is one gigantic underwater-level. People would cry, but I would love it (as long as I can breath freely underwater).
