Re: Talking Point: Could Sony Or Microsoft Release Their Own Nintendo Switch-Style Hybrids?

Emperor-Palpsy

I would suggest it's less about the available technology and more about the brand > opportunity > risk factor.

Microsoft is heading towards a future of services that would compete with Steam, as this would reduce the costs for what is small division in the company. Services encourage users to purchase Windows machines as a complimentary device, too.

Sony have had trouble competing with Nintendo in the mobile space in many territories, and I doubt they have any interest in creating a new division again. They're doing so well on the console-only front because of their exclusives and marketing; they won't want to deviate right now.

As D.F. suggested in a previous video, any future Tegra upgrade would bring Switch more in line with today's consoles, and while the argument is there that, by that time, the competition will have already gained new ground, it is up to developers to take advantage of that additional power. Of which, it is likely a minority of AAA-developers who have the time, money and resources to take the hardware to its full potential. And even then, do users outside of the hardcore care about a few extra shading/bloom effects?...

If Nintendo can create gorgeous 900p/dynamic res 60fps games now, imagine what the future holds.

@Amrulez "But I would rather they spend their time making great Switch software."

Nintendo's software division isn't just one level of programmers. They have teams of people that are assigned to projects based on importance; notably an 'A' and 'B' team. If you believe that the A team will still be producing 3DS software (a platform with over 1,000 titles), you're sorely mistaken.

"We are already hearing of people bored with their Switch, complaining about a bad start to the first 4 months of 2018 etc"

All users are accounted for from reading internet comments/YouTube videos? The sales figures are the reality of the situation, because new customers have access to an already incredible library of games.

"A cheaper slightly more portable Switch is bound to come in the next year or so anyway."

Based on what evidence? Miniaturising the hardware - even if it was possible - would have no positive effect on Nintendo's strategy. In fact, it would only damage it. Developers would have to redesign their software for the smaller display in handheld mode; a smaller unit has no competitive advantage over mobile devices; and the marketing of a 'Switch Mini' would only confuse customers again.

If it sells, they'll keep selling it. Really don't understand all these complaints from people who want the system 'killed off'. They obviously have no grasp of business studies or economics.

And they are also clearly not the audience; but the people who don't want to/can't drop money on a Switch have a fantastic, cheaper alternative. It has over 1,000 games and the 2DS in particular is like a tank.

Re: Talking Point: Does Sega's AGES Announcement Mean The Virtual Console Is Dead?

Emperor-Palpsy

‘Virtual Console’ is just a trademark - it’s not a technology. So I don't know why people insist on questioning where 'it' is; is 'it' dead etc.

The more relevant question is why Nintendo wouldn't make their classic games available on one of their greatest ever products. This is not a case of hardware driving software, but rather the reverse. The company has made its profit on these games for years, so the major selling point today is how the software can drive Switch.

This is why all the odds are against individually purchased - Reggie himself has commented that the company is aware of the issues surrounding repeated transactions. A new way of releasing their software would drive the Switch because it wouldn't have the stigma of 'Virtual Console'.

That is (to coin an example); they could release a compilation, wrapped-up just like the NES/SNES Mini with the new emulation, save states and fun navigation, and you immediately have an enticing experience.

For now people just need to be patient, because this back-catalogue is Nintendo's trump card and they're simply waiting for the right time to re-introduce it. The demand and anticipation that has been built is, in affect, to their favour; they could drop an announcement for their plans at a moment's notice, and it would instantly steal some shine from any of their competitors news.

Plus right now, there is no pressure to as their Nindies and other eshop titles are selling so well. This is largely because they have had the space and exposure, which would not be so obvious when Nintendo's classic titles are there too.

So I would bet on either a second tier of their online service being with the inclusion of classic titles, or a series of compilations.

Re: White House Meeting With Industry Execs Focuses On Violence In Video Games

Emperor-Palpsy

One aspect that is rarely taken into account is the actual age range of the players.

I do not believe that violent or mature video games in themselves are a catalyst for a violent behaviour; rather, the impact is from how mature the individual is.

I'm a primary school teacher and I can tell you now that the overwhelming majority of boys that I work with (aged 7-11) play 18-rated video games. It is all they talk about when the opportunity arises, and they simulate the actions from the games in class and find violent behaviour funny.

The impact that these games have on children is quite devastating and has to be seen to be believed - but it is the parent's responsibility. If they can't be bothered to protect their child and instead let them get their own way, then why are the creators at fault?

The reason these games have PEGI ratings is because mature adults can distinguish fantasy from reality. Children are naive and are still developing their emotional awareness and sensitivity. Likewise, an individual (adult or not) with mental health problems would actively seek this type of video game, which is another form of pleasure.

I would also argue against the "violent games have always existed" notion, as tone and explicity change a great deal.

Re: Surprise! There's A New Nintendo Direct Coming, And It's Due Tomorrow

Emperor-Palpsy

My predictions:

Mario Tennis Aces story mode, multiplayer features, release date
'Yoshi' details, release date
Windwaker HD port
Another Wii U port (NES Remix?)
System update details
A couple of third-party titles (one probably being 'Crash')

In all honesty, the fact that they've highlighted Mario Tennis Aces as having new detail suggests that that will be the highlight of the presentation.

Re: You Can Now Pre-Order An EU Retail Copy Of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

@DickeyWord In the instances of Mega Man and Resident Evil revelations, Capcom didn’t supply both games on the same card because the Switch only recognises one piece of software per card. It is assigned its own profile and save file; a bootstrap menu that gave you the option of loading either game wouldn’t get around this.

The only way around this would be to compile both games into one as a single piece of software (ie PAC MAN Championship Editon), with the option to enter a game in a main menu or equivalent.

The fact that Capcom decided not to do this engineering is more important than anything, as they either didn’t want to spend the time or money doing so.
