To celebrate the long-awaited release of Yooka-Laylee on Switch, Playtonic's artists have been paying tribute to their past connection with Nintendo.
As you know, Playtonic's core team is made up of former Rare staffers who worked on some of the company's most famous NES, SNES and N64 era titles. These talented chaps are now pulling together those decades of history in these bespoke pieces of artwork, and it's no surprise to see that Banjo-Kazooie features prominently.
We sadly may never see this famous duo on a Nintendo console again, as Rare is now totally owned by Microsoft and Banjo-Kazooie's status as an original Rare IP means Nintendo has no claim over it. Still, with Microsoft seemingly open to the idea of getting its games onto as many systems as possible - even rival ones - you never know...

This...is...amazing!
Make me (Project) dream ..
If you get the pun
If Microsoft really wants to get their games onto as many consoles as possible, surely the Rare Replay collection would make perfect sense? I mean, most of the titles were originally on Nintendo platforms. Would sell well I reckon.
Nintendo, get a deal with Microsoft for Rare Replay on Switch. I don't care if you have to give them Donkey Kong games on Xbox One to do it.
These definitely look cool. I would love to see Rare Replay hit Switch. I think it would sell better there than it did on Xbox lol.
Slick stuff!
If the developers had it their way, they'd still make Battletoads and Banjo-Kazooie for Nintendo. Heck, I'd like to see Banjo make an (official. Mods don't count) appearance in a Mario Kart game. Or a Donkey Kong game for that matter.
These are great. Losing Banjo-Kazooie to Microsoft (and Rare in general) is still some of the worst gaming news I can ever remember.
Ugh! I miss the battletoads!
If only
Microsoft has never seem to had any interest in those Rare IP's or doing anything significant with them other than a few rereleases. Why not sell them to a developer who will give us new entries or at least use the characters in more significant ways?
Rare Replay is literally the only thing that I find tempting about Xbox One. Nintendo really should make a deal with Microsoft to bring it to Switch.
Yooka-Laylee is a good platformer after the patches and it deserves more attention, but it's not as good as Banjo-Kazooie. Besides, I think Banjo, Kazooie and Conker are much better characters, Yooka and Laylee would have been better enemies than stars.
Rare Replay is the reason why every gamer should have an Xbox One.
That Banjo DK artwork is absolutely Nostalgia in a bottle.. amazing. I’m just asking for a deal that allows them to make a new 3D Banjo or DK in original or more so Diddy Kong’s Quest style.. Im not asking too much really.. am I? AM i!!!?
BTW : Take a look at original DK country artwork and notice how DK looks.. he has no teeth... these days he keeps getting drawn with teeth, which to me at least, doesn’t look as good.
Lanky Kong better be the last DLC character in ARMS, specifically the one codenamed “surprise”.
Since Nintendo owns the whole Donkey Kong franchise, they could include Lanky Kong in Arms if they wanted to, even though he was made by Rare.
Man. As much as Retro set a new standard for DK games (2D platformers as a whole), this art makes me think it would be cool to see Playtonic take a stab at the next title (as I'm sure Retro is busy on something else)
Hey I got a idea let playtonic make donkey Kong country 4 for switch since they made the first 3 games anyway
@Slim1999 Yes but remember that Rare staffers are not all at Playtonic. Some are at Rare and some on their own. This is why Yooka-Laylee is not as good as Banjo-Kazooie.
I would love to see Donkey Kong Country 4 and Banjo-Kazooie Threeie, though.
Lanky Kong 😍😍😍
I’m so glad to see him getting recognition, I loved playing as him in DK64 as a child. Well, to be honest I adored the whole game, and It’s always saddened me to see the new (by DK64 standards) Kongs put into the backburner for so many years. Why noone ever thought of bringing Lanky, Chunky and Tiny back?
The only way Microsoft are going to allow Rare property to run on Nintendo hardware is if they can get something out of it themselves. I really don’t see any of Nintendo’s I.P on a rival console.0
This is why I waited for the Switch version, it just feels right.
@Whopper744 true, specially since my playtime on 64 was all about Rare: DKC 1/2/3, Perfect Dark, Conker, and Banjo 1/2.
Hopefully the rest of Rare will give Microsoft the bird, join up with Playtonic and we'll start seeing the likes of Battletoads, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Snake, Rattle n Roll and various other IPs on multiple platforms and handhelds.
@NewAdvent They are more spin-off considering the enemies are different and there are no buddies (except Rambi).
@Tempestryke That could happen. While Nintendo is reserved about their characters, I can see Microsoft allowing current Rare to work with Playtonic to make Banjo Threeie for Xbox One and Windows. The music could be made by freelancer Grant Kirkhope who made Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie's music.
@BlueOcean - That's not a good analogy. That's like saying Mario Odyssey is a spinoff to Sunshine.
@Paraka It's not the same scenario, R and TF are different enough they could feature different protagonists and not changing the rest, they are quite different games indeed and they are not called 4 and 5 anyway so they are not 4 or 5 anyway. They are a sub-series, like New Super Mario Bros. if you want to use the Mario analogy that hard.
@BlueOcean so un your logic they can still release a Super Mario game and still call it 4? Neat!
@fafonio No, I didn't say so, the other guy was messing with Mario games, not me. You got everything wrong.
@Slim1999 Yes! Then sign them up as 2nd party again and let the renaissance continue.
Lanky Kong in ARMS support.
TBF, the only way we're going to see those games on Nintendo systems again is if Microsoft quit the console making business, which could happen as I don't think they make any money from every system sold, but maybe not anytime soon...
Still a shame that Nintendo didn't buy the Banjo-Kazooie IP from Rare before they sold to Microsoft. MS is NOT a company whose gamers gravitate towards cartoony platformers, but Nintendo is. Sigh.
If Microsoft wants to earn some money in the console business let rare work on games for Nintendo switch and let them make a new Killer instinct for it. Rare and Nintendo where a dream team back then.
@Emperor-Palpsy Metroid Halo crossover??! 😵😉
@Banjos_Backpack Who remembers the impact this image had back in the day.
Lots of peeps were in denial
I hope playtronic joins Nintendo and we can have sort of a part of rare hope for banjo and all of rare comes back
Awesome stuff!
My dream would be a new Donkey Kong 3D
Playtonic should develop a new donkey kong game like 64 was
