We had a slightly odd 'Tips from the Wild' news post on Switch recently, in that it didn't bother offering any gifts. Nintendo has decided to be generous again in the most recent post for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, however, offering Switch owners a freebie if they boot the game from the relevant post.

When it comes to fishing some may just throw bombs into the water, which is admittedly cruel, inelegant and mightily effective. As an alternative you can tempt fish by dropping the relevant food - to do this the gift includes a Voltfuit, Cool Safflina and Spicy Pepper with which to experiment.
Or you can use bombs, whatever works for you.

Bombs for sure. Things are getting too spicy for the pepper.
Bombs > fruit
What?! I just jump into the water and catch the fish with Link's bare hands. IMHO that's by far the best way to do it.
Shock arrows are soooo satisfying though....
Bombs the best and laughably the most cruel, but when I'm swimming through ponds and such, I just swim with the fishes in my Sheikah outfit to snatch em up.
Catching fish isn't ethical...
@shani Yep that's what I do too, works for me. I hadn't actually thought of throwing in a bomb in let alone some fruit. I'll be trying both though next time I play it.
@penfold007 Frazzled salmon nom nom yum nom nom.
An utter waste of precious arrows and equipment, but launching some Shock Arrows from a x5 Lynel Bow into a lake is one of the most electrifying pleasures the game has to offer!
@Jack_Goetz Bombing fish in real life is fun too.
Breath of the Wild's lack of fishing system was one of the most disappointing aspects of the game. A proper fishing journal and different rods with rare fish in a game of this scope would have been amazing, but no, you just jump in and grab 'em
I wasted so many arrows (and thereby rupees) early in the game catching fish before I saw someone post something in the comments here about bomb fishing. I kind of miss those early days in game where every single item was absolutely critical to survival.
Its never once occurred to me to do that haha. Personally I am fan of electric arrows as you kill a whole wack in one go and is more precise than bombs.
Wish they would throw in a proper fishing rod though with proper fishing mechanics, and while they are at it a proper way to row the boats.
Bomb fishing is best fishing
Shock arrows for me.
@OorWullie I knew that you could bait the fish but any fruit is just too precious to give it away.
I almost never plan to go fishing though (almost never need them, besides you get fish from enemies and shops), whenever I have to swim I just take a quick detour to collect a few fishes.
@Ryu_Niiyama - You were the one who taught me about using bombs to fish in a comment section way back last spring. Thanks!
i prefer my approach of amiibo and swimming which both work.
@justin233 American Dad?
@Snakesglowcaps
@bimmy-lee Ha! Happy to help. I've since switched to shock arrows.
@justin233 hahaha k good. Well done sir, well done.
@penfold007 Shock arrows are definitely the best way to fish!
I didn't know about throwing food into the water that's pretty cool!
Aren't bombs the MOST humane method? Instant death and all.
If you just put on one piece of stealth armor you can swim right up on fish and snatch them. That way you can still rock Zora armor for the swimming.
@bimmy-lee Play the master mode difficulty level it'll be like that throughout the entire game
Always just swam, or dove, or fell, into them. I knew about the fruit, but unless the fruit is on a line at the end of a pole what's the point?
Biggest over site in the game, no fishing pole. I still find it hard to believe it isn't in there and all of us just haven't found it yet.
No fishing in a Zelda game, pashaw
@MaSSiVeRiCaN - Thanks, yes, I definitely will. Planning on purchasing the DLC this winter when it’s all released. I’ve been playing since launch, and I’m not sure if I’m proud or embarrassed to say I’ve only done two divine beasts. I’ve been mostly wandering and exploring (and hoarding). I’ve been feeling ready to get down to business lately though.
I just fish for them like Homer does in that one part of 'The Simpsons Movie'
When i first started i tried spear fishing with the boku staff.
Spear fishing would be awesome if weapons didn't break so easily when thrown. XD
I always just swim through the water to catch fish. No stealth, no bait, no weapons or bombs, just my bare hands and my need to catch them all.
I use one of my 900+ lightning arrows, personally.
Dynamite fishing FTW. Free bait.
You can always use Crynosis to ‘raise’ the fish out of the water. Takes a bit of practice but it’s funny none the less; they’re so helpless!
i rather just slow mo in the air and shoot the fish i need before hittin the water!
What is human about an instant kill? Let me throw a bomb to your face.
Redneck fishing at it's finest with bombs!
Best thou is Shock arrows!
Does anyone know if these upgrades are for a limited time only? Haven't got around to Breath of the Wild yet.

I never knew you could throw a bomb at water or use food. I would just jump in the water and grab them. I'll be bombing them now!!!
Just give us back the dam fishing rod already!
@bimmy-lee might as well wait then and experience hero mode and the entirety of the game in all its glory. It's much better playing with a Korok mask too. Makes the game and further exploration even more a joy then it already is.
I just swim over them and grab them.
@Karlos88 Surprised there isn't one that acts as a weapon too. They have a pitchfork and other "tools"
I have never had any need for hunting.
I have 100+ amiibo I can scan in to get food and equipment.
I choose to throw food to draw them in, then bomb while they're chowing down. At least they go out happy.
I swear at first glance I read "Ethnic Fishing."
"Or you can just detonate bombs in the water"
@shani,
That's how I do it all the time. I didn't even know you could bomb them!
