I'm not trying to troll here - as far as I can see it's a bland and uninspired 'special edition' even if you love Metroid.

Surely a big part of the draw of this is merely that everyone knows it will be rare and collectible. Other than that I can see what the fuss is about at all.

The box art looks better than the handheld art imo. Still cool though. Good to see Nintendo pushing the Metroid franchise more seriously by marketing the name better.

No. I don't want this in Europe thanks. It's gorgeous but I already have two Zelda N3DSXLs and just bought the 2DSXL.

It's gorgeous beyond words. But I already have the New 3DS XL, and I don't want to invest in yet another iteration of a system on its way out. As much as it pains me, I'll have to pass...

Why can't the New XL model have changeable faceplates? I already have the Majoras Mask edition, I can't really find a reason to also own this!

I want to like this, but as the last picture shows, they keep messing up the top side on the special editions. Unless Samus has gained the "Captain Viridian"-like ability to flip gravity and walk along the ceiling, it's upside down yet again.

I think the only time I've seen them get this right is with the faceplates and that one time with the Link Between Worlds special 3DS XL. :\

Not a huge fan of the color scheme, but I already have the Majora's Mask special edition 3ds XL that I got a cold waiting in line in the morning for so won't be buying, but I do already have Samus Returns preordered, will be the first game I've played in forever on my 3DS when it comes out.

@BLP_Software Look, I didn't expect it to be a popular comment - especially on this post.

And believe me, I get the hype around the Metroid games and some of the collectable stuff you mentioned which look great and - well like the people who designed them wanted to make something special.

I'd buy a Switch and take the poop I'd get on the chin immediately if Metroid Prime was coming out. I've even thought about buying a 3DS just for this game. (for the record I have young kids so a Wii U is the right option for the family right now and I don't have the money or time for a 'me' console).

But this Samus edition 3DS is a super low effort, utter cash grab exploitation of a beloved franchise. And kind of a piss take of the loyal Nintendo fans who love to collect the merch. No judgement there - some people get lots of joy out of it - good for them.

But I commented because when I saw the SKU I was super underwhelmed. Especially in the context of that other sweet stuff. And when I read the comments - I won't quote specifically but skim read them - people up and down this post are acting like this is a beautiful item.

It's really really not. All kinds of interesting design ideas could have been developed for this using the huge amount of amazing source material. The key thing is - imagine how cool this could have been!!

But no, they coloured it red and yellow, slapped some Samus clip art on top of a vaguely spacey pattern and called it a day. Rubbish effort Nintendo.

People are excited by Metroid and the idea of owning a Metroid themed 3DS - sure - I'd love to see what they could do if they tried. But this tat?!

Metroid deserves better.

@TJM The Majora's Mask 3DS was just a render of the Mask. The Smash one is just the 3DS box art roster and logo.

The Animal Crossing New Leaf one is just lots of images of in game items in a pattern.

This is a pattern and the new render of Samus doing her Prime pose.

It's no lower effort than the other 3DS variants, or even most of the other consoles or controllers. You get something representative of the franchise on the system or controller. Boom. Job done.

I can hold out on the system since I haven't touched my 3ds since march 3rd. I might end up getting Samus returns but I will prob wait in hope or will come to switch as well.

This is stupid. I have one of every 3DS/2DS revision... but I want this real bad. Such a great looking system.

@BLP_Software You make a fair point. My 3DS special edition expectations are adjusted accordingly.

However, a quick search shows up some examples of how those simple bold graphics can really pop and excite - or how the patterns can turn a fairly bland looking item into something cool and appealing.

I think this version is a total washout - even in the context of the simple treatments. It just doesn't look particularly interesting / cool / fun. Less is more is great - but it's not a replacement for an idea.

Reactions to the design on this post just seem wildly over the top in my opinion - Samus or no Samus. Sorry peeps! That's what made me post originally - my surprise at everyone loosing their minds over something so . . . bland.

I haven't even opened up the Link Between Worlds edition yet. I was planning on finally using it sometime this year and now this happens. I REALLY don't need another 3DS but it's going to be hard passing this up.

Mediocre job here. I'd rather they release nice looking N3DS Metroid faceplates.

I don't get how they don't include a digital copy of the game...they're already exploiting the collectors by releasing this instead of making the XL system face plate compatible so that you could just get this edition as plates included with the game. Well, that's my feeling about it, but I'm not much of a collector these days, admittedly.

I just bought a New 2DS XL, and a Switch, so I'll pass on this.

Despite orange/yellow not being two of my favorite colors, that N3DS XL DOES look attractive.

Now for a Zero Suit Samus design because, quite frankly, blue is my favorite color.

Curious they didn't make it for the 2DS XL.

Lovely and all.......but the game's limited edition and possibly a SNES Mini (Assuming Game makes good with my order) are eating my month that month. Heck, Pokken Tournament DX has to wait till later so its a busy month to say the least.....

That's super sexy. I just bought a Galaxy model about a month ago (first upgrade since my original 2011 3DS) so I'm a little cheesed... but then again, I mainly bought a new model so I could mod it and this Metroid one probably had the newest firmware.

I could recreate this in photoshop within a minute. This design is rather boring if you ask me. I'll stick with my Fates Special Edition.

I need this but I love my New 3DS with the faceplates...I hate how we are only allowed to have our games on 1 system at a time....

Gosh dang it! Every time I tell myself I'm done with 3DS... I was "done" 14 3DS's ago... yet here we are.

Most people on here seem to LOVE the design. But for those who don't - what would you like instead?
A few ideas to start:

A level map covering the console - back and front.
A pattern of all different Metroids and stages of evolution.
A diagramatic design showing Samus's new range of shooting movement.
A sprite sheet type pattern showing some / all of Samu's movement. Just a better realised image of Samus in a more interesting / better looking position on the 3DS - make her look cooler, smaller and more alone.
A coloured metalic metal case so it looks and feels like Samus's suit far fetched I know, but hey - I'm spit balling!
A sequence of her morph ball rolling - coming out of it - going back in - looping round the console.

Try again Nintendo - we'll forgive you.

Them: Get it because is looks soooo good
Me: But I bought most special additions only to trade for the next paint job
Them: But it's Samus and she looks bad ass

I already have the Link Between Worlds 3DS XL, the Zelda New 3DS XL that launched alongside Hyrule Warriors Legends, a black small New 3DS. I don't need this AT ALL!!!

I was just saying this morning that I need to get a new 3DS XL this year and then I saw this ., It will be mine , well hopefully.

Beautiful design, but let me guess, the interior is black, which kills any potential purchase for me. If it's not, by some miracle, I will certainly consider selling my old New XL and making this my main.

This is a pretty easy buy for me, as long as I can get it at retail. I'm a modest collector but the 3DS line of systems have been a dream to collect for. So many varieties to have. I may not play it a lot but would love to have it.

In case you are upset Nintendo is building 3DS systems instead of Switch systems, remember that Nintendo is in direct competition with Apple for specific parts that are expensive and hard to get. Apple is gobbling up flash-memory, liquid-crystals displays and other parts that are vital to build the Switch. This is Nintendo trying to have variety in the marketplace while they try and get more Switches made.

Average. There is so much good artwork and colour at your disposal when it comes to Metroid, this utilises none of that.

I now managed to get hold of the Pokémon Sun/Moon special edition new 3ds console this week and it looks fantastic!

@oHOWEo : Same. Within a couple of weeks of use too! It stopped holding a charge after only a year of use as well, so I replaced it with the Happy Home Designer N3DSXL, but it's too embarrassing for an already emasculated guy like me to play in public, so I'm going to replace that with the Samus model.

I still believe it was removing the rear cover to put in a larger memory card that caused the paint to eventually flake off. If you get the Samus model don't remove the back cover

@oHOWEo : I don't think that's the problem. I think Nintendo just used poor (or the wrong) materials when producing the paint of the Monster Hunter model (as it's a widespread problem specifically with this particular design). Paint was peeling everywhere, so I fail to see how removing the rear cover would have had anything to do with it.

I haven't experienced any peeling problems at all with my Animal Crossing N3DSXL. In fact, I don't think it's possible to peel it at all as the case is made of different materials (as opposed to paint), or whatever was used in the Monster Hunter case.

It's beyond hilarious that the special edition console does not come with a copy of the game.
