The hardware itself is wonderful. Playing Switch games on Switch 2 feels like an upgrade even when it's the same game.
Software's a bit of a mixed bag. Mario Kart World launched in a seemingly incomplete state and got worse after that one infamous update, but it's an extremely good game at its core. Kirby was a weird choice for the launch window, especially given the redundancy with Mario Kart. Bonanza is apparently great (haven't played it yet) but lacks the wide appeal of a Mario game. Other major titles (Pokemon Z-A, Metroid Prime 4) are also available on Switch.
But I've enjoyed my Switch 2 (and the 370+ hours I've put into MKW) quite a bit. More importantly, I bought it for the next several years, not for six months.
@moevot138 I'd add to that the drama* around amiibo unlocks. If you're genuinely angry about not being able to change the color of a pretend motorcycle in a video game, then you've got a problem.
*Drama that exists only among a small but disproportionately loud subset of people on the internet.
@MCHuddle Agreed. It's not a valid complaint about the game being reviewed. If Retro had opted not to create amiibo-exclusive content at all, it would in no wise have affected the experience of playing this game sans amiibo.
I liked what they were going for with the characters in MP3 but felt they missed the mark due to corny dialogue and mediocre voice acting. I like the look of these characters a lot, and the VA has been, from what I've heard, shockingly good. The dialogue has been...not great, but not terrible. Decent enough by video game standards, at least.
Kirby Air Riders is not at all my thing, but it did send me on a Kirby kick. I'm replaying Dream Land 3 this weekend (along with regular sessions of online Mario Kart World, of course).
This was my first M&L game (of two). I found the battles tedious and the dialogue more so. I attributed these faults to this being the consensus weakest of the series, but after playing the first game I've decided they're characteristic of the series as a whole. At least the overworld puzzles are neat.
Nintendo hasn't known what to do with Star Fox since Star Fox 64. I think the fact that SF was created by another studio is a big part of the reason. (I say this as someone who has enjoyed post-SF64 games.)
Setting aside how I feel about the game itself, I thought it was a terrible decision to release Air Riders when they did. It surely would have benefited from a larger install base and more temporal separation from Mario Kart.
On the other hand, this game's very existence probably has little to do with marketability, so in that light its poor timing shouldn't be a surprise. This is Sakurai's reward for his long years of toil in the Smash mines. Good for him, I guess.
@rjejr "But I think Kirby Air Riders is for people who want to play this game while streaming it on Twitch while simultaneously also watching other people stream it on Twitch."
I've spent weeks wondering who this game is for. I think you finally helped me understand. :b
Not surprised, and kind of a shame. There's a lot of energy and a ton of polish in this game (as I'd expect from Sakurai), but none of that can make up for the vapid gameplay.
@Ralek85 Pretty good summary of the self-contradictory nature of MKW. I find it to be simultaneously the best Mario Kart ever, and the most disappointing. I think there must have been some tumultuous development behind this game, the story of which should be fascinating if it ever comes out.
Looks amazing, packed with content, and incredibly polished, as I would expect from a Sakurai game. Unfortunately it felt incredibly shallow when I played. Tons of stuff going on at all times, but none of it means anything.
@The_Nintendo_Pedant Yeah, kind of feels like they wasted their opportunity to make a new F-Zero, eh?
This article reminds me that I have the Zero Escape trilogy in my Stream library but haven't yet played it, so it has at least served that good purpose.
Started collecting NES carts (again) after I found a working NES at a yard sale about 3 years ago. Got a RetroTink to run it through. Nothing beats original hardware.

@Pillowpants Humor is lost on the internet.
Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond: Walkthrough, All Collectibles, Tips & Tricks
@Flatlinerking They'll be finished eventually, just like most video games on release these days.
Re: Nintendo Music "Special Release" Adds Seven Tracks From Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Shoot, the main theme may be even better than the one from MP2.

Re: UK Charts: Kirby Is Nowhere To Be Seen In A Quiet Week
Just waiting till Thursday to snatch up my copy of Metroid Prime 4!
Which has little bearing on this topic because I don't live in the UK!
Re: Random: "Splendid Game" - Shigeru Miyamoto Was A Fan Of Banjo-Tooie
Indeed a splended game, and better than its predecessor.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Bionic Commando (NES)
The Japanese box barely convinced me to not vote for NA. Honestly, none of these are bad.

Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond: amiibo Unlocks Revealed
Finally, amiibo that do something interesting, again, but now they cost too much. Real monkey's paw situation.
Re: Star Fox Programmer's Next Game May As Well Be A New Entry In Nintendo's Series

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Kirby Air Riders?
@swedetrap Pretty much my thoughts. So many cool ideas in this game squandered by extremely shallow gameplay. Whole game feels like a waste.

Please tell me MacKenzie is in it!
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - SNES Classic Mini Console
NA, Japan, Europe.
NA has a great asthetic and several game logos. Japan has color and style.
Europe can't be bothered with visual appeal; it's too busy plastering age ratings and ac adapter notifications all over the box.
Re: 50 Best Super Nintendo (SNES) Games Of All Time
@axelhander I'll join your fledgling band of radicals and agree that DKC2 is better than SMW.

First glance at the headline and I thought knockout tour had been updated, hopefully with more routes. Disappointed.

"Metroid Prime 4 releases itself on December 4." There, now everyone's happy.
Re: Rumour: Zelda Movie Production Set Footage Has Supposedly Leaked Online
Probably recording the scene where Impa reassures Zelda that the Triforce of Wisdom says the king will return.
Re: Top 100 Nintendo Games, As Chosen By Nintendo Life & IGN
Weird list overrall, but I can't complain about the top 10.
Re: Round Up: The Final Previews Are In For Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Strangely, despite being a huge fan of Metroid and Prime in particular, I haven't been very excited for this game. Until today.
Re: Kirby Air Riders Global Test Ride Times - When Is The Online Demo Happening?
I'll probably give this another shot. There's got to be more to this game than what I experienced last time, right?
Re: Feature: 12 Details You Might Have Missed In The Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer
Should be fun. I enjoyed the first one.
Re: Poll: What Do You Make Of The Mario Galaxy Movie's Leaked Yoshi Design?
It'll probably grow on me the way Mario's design did.

Raise the price! We can't have the rabble getting their filthy hands on these!
Re: Can You Name These NES Games From The Mangled Box Art?
Most of these were easy. And then there was Tecmo (Super) Bowl.
I got 20/21. Wish it told me my time, too.
Re: 50 Best NES Games Of All Time
@WheresWaveRace Funny use of the word "objectively."
Re: Talking Point: How Do You Play NES Games These Days?
Started collecting NES carts (again) after I found a working NES at a yard sale about 3 years ago. Got a RetroTink to run it through. Nothing beats original hardware.
Re: 50 Best NES Games Of All Time
The scores on this list are comically low.
Re: Poll: Is It About Time Game Freak Added Voice Acting To Pokémon?
Where's the option "No, voice acting would be an actual detriment?" Because that's the correct choice.
Re: Nintendo Reportedly Increases Switch 2 Production To 25 Million Units For Year 1
I'm a day-one adopter who plays his Switch 2 every day, and even I have a hard time understanding why it's selling so well.
