@hanleyforhire Maybe none. The way I read the article the first time, I interpreted this as a change of Nintendo's policy, or a decision to begin enforcing a pre-existing policy, since RTA had been operating as a legal entity since 2020 without Nintendo requiring permission. But that may not be the case. The article is scant on detail, and I don't read Japanese, so who knows.
@Sirko This event has been going on for years. I doubt Nintendo was unaware. Besides, Nintendo is the one who made the change in policy. It's their responsibility to notify those it affects. They did, but they could (and should, I think) have done so in a timlier manner.
Not necessarily opposed to requiring permission (there are all sorts of legal issues that I don't know the details of, I'm sure), but they should have given the organizers some advance notice.
@progx True. I'm just basing this on the fact that retailers got both SKUs on launch day, and the (I think justified) assumption that the MKW bundle was the more desirable of the two. That would lead to situations of the bundle selling out first and a customer being forced to spend more to get a Switch 2 and MKW separately.
Based on what I've heard and my own very limited experience, the odds of getting a real track haven't improved much. I'd already decided I enjoyed Discord lobbies more than WW, anyway, so no loss? Other parts of the update are welcome, though.
@Ulysses Users on the MKW Discord server started hosting public rooms so we could play the tracks. There are several open rooms at just about any time, and it's a friendly environment.
Ooh, this is very much a work in progress right now, isn't it? But I'm only checking because I spoiled a bit of the game for myself this morning, and now I'm curious to know how far along in the game that spoiled bit takes place.
@AgentGuapo You sure about that? Both MKW and DKB had day-one patches. Nintendo games don't just get patched; these days, they're designed to literally lock out features without a required patch.
From what little I've read, this seems like a game that will become even more appreciated over time. The Eurogamer review in particular reads like a 5/5, despite the score.
I said elsewhere, even if this could have been released on Switch, I don't feel bad for them moving it to Switch 2. We got a good 8 years (and counting) out of the Switch. More than I'd hoped for, honestly.
@Duncanballs It's pretty clear from the last question they don't care about physical games for the purpose of this survey. Given one of two specific options, which do you prefer? That's the question being asked.
@NielsNL That would be true if the question weren't specific about the available media. When you're conducting a survey like this, you have to be very careful ahead of time about the question you ask. Too vague a question, and the data you gather ends up being useless. This question seems to be designed to gain information about games where only two options are available.* It doesn't make sense to include a third option if Nintendo isn't interested in that data.
Also, I can't think of any games with both game-on-cart and key card versions, can you? It wouldn't make sense to ask about something that doesn't even exist.
*Strictly speaking (and assuming an accurate translation), the question is phrased so as to leave open the possibility of a third media option. But you'd have to be really pedantic to interpret it that way.
Can't be too upset when we already got a good 8 years from the Switch. And besides, I can't really imagine the Switxh handling these destructible levels well.
@DaGoldenBoo I can think of some games that are truly artistic, but they were made by people who didn't lose sight of the fact they were making video games.
@Kestrel It's not the same mistake. If I made a mistake, it was misinterpreting another person's remarks. My point was the same as yours, which is why I found your first reply so befuddling.
But I didn't misinterpret anything. The other person literally said that it's "stepping outside reality" to think a certain type of game is good. It doesn't get more blatant than that.
Prior to that, they tried arguing against the Shortcat video based on their enjoyment of intermissions. But the Shortcat video wasn't about whether intermissions were fun; it was about their competitve nature, which can be analyzed objectively. Shortcat goes out of his way to say multiple times that fun is subjective, and that that's not what the video is about. The commenter attempted to dismiss the video based on their own opinion, but the video isn't about opinions.
@ROMhaiku TWD98 made a video playing intermissions that people had recommended as some of the best, and he was really positive on them. This was before the update, too, so it's not like he had to play them.
I once commented that I didn't like the phrase "worldwide etiquette" applied to always picking random, because it implied that no one liked intermissions.
I feel that everyone tried to give them a fair shake, but in the end it became clear that they're very shallow, and most people had to admit they only like the real tracks.
MKW has the potential to be the best Mario Kart by a mile, but right now there are so many omissions and strange decisions holding it back.
The MKW Discord hosts open lobbies where you can race on real tracks. It's a great place to play until Nintendo fixes online versus (and will continue to be after, I'm sure). Since Shortcat posted a video on it just a few days ago its membership has grown from 7,000 to more than 31,000.
The Switch 2 situation is reminding me more and more of the PS3 launch. Starting to feel like Nintendo got too big for its britches following the success of the Switch.
I got my Switch 2 for the long haul, but I gotta say I kind of regret the purchase in this moment. I'm burned by what happened to MKW and the precedent it's set. I want to play DKB, but now I feel I have to wait a few months to make sure Nintendo doesn't pull a bait & switch like with MKW. And I just noticed that Tony Hawk is a code in a box, so I might as well get it on Steam.
The only 2025 release I've played so far is Mario Kart World, but I can't vote for it after what Nintendo did to it. But this is the year that I finally decided I like Fire Emblem, so I'm voting for Fire Emblem (7) on the NSO GBA app.
"The issue can be solved in one of two ways. Rather than increase supply, we have decided to decrease demand for our new console. Update 1.1.2 for Mario Kart World was released about 36 hours ago." - Nintendo, probably
@Bigmanfan I'm planning on checking out the Mario Kart Discord server. I think people there host rooms all the time. I'm also planning to look into competitive MKW and possibly join some of those events.
@turmeric16 I think you misunderstand the YouTubers. They're upset because they genuinely love the game and think this update hurts it. There is negativity for the sake of negativity, but this is criticism with the hope that Nintendo will hear it and fix the game.
Shortcat did his own video on the update. He's one of the most positive YouTubers I know, so to hear him so down on it is particularly impressive. He also does a great job explaining why it's a problem, for those who maybe aren't sure.
Not the news I wanted to wake up to. And I was looking forward to spending more time with this game online. Nintendo has effectively ruined Mario Kart World with this update.
