@sunny63 First and foremost, if you've played BotW, try your best to detach the experience from OoT. I've said it before, but while BotW is one if the best videogames ever, its the least like a traditional Zelda game.

This is more of a "trick" than a tip, but the fastest way to get around is not by rolling forward, but by Z-Locking and doing side-jumps. You will be able to ride on a horse, but not until the later half of the game.

Eventually you will get to a water temple. Its notoriously tricky, and just about everyone gets stuck for a couple hours in this dungeon. It helps to remember that there's a floating platform that will take you up to the next floor that you can swim underneath to access a flooded version of the floor beneath you.

And lastly, if you have the time to kill and haven't done so already, it may also be a good idea to play LttP on the SNES first. Its a solid game through and through, and helps establish the pace of the next several Zelda games.

Re: Video: We're Playing Zelda: Ocarina Of Time In Our New YouTube Series 'First Bytes'

Desrever

I obsessed over this game for years after it came out. Such an important game in Nintendo history.

But I also have to cut some slack for anyone playing it for the first time. There's a couple decades worth of QoL improvements that have been common place in games, and its hard to readjust. The original LoZ for NES is one of my favorites, but its not a great starting place for the modern kids.

Re: Video: Is 3DS StreetPass Dead?

Desrever

Also, just wanted to add-on that the video was way more emotional than it had any right being. Probably the most somber SMW slide whistle outro transition in the site's history.

Re: Video: Is 3DS StreetPass Dead?

Desrever

Once upon a time, back in my convention-going days, I had a fully completed street pass puzzle collection. Even had some that were JP only. I had several games like Kid Icarus and Bravely Default where I sent out my most helpful data over to others.

That 3DS got pick-pocketed from me on the bus one day, which broke my heart. I replaced it with the galaxy themed New 3DS XL which was beautiful, but I'm never getting that data back. I never even bothered to turn Streetpass on for the new one.

But honestly? The part I miss the most was the Activity Log. It was so much fun being able to pull up a date from years ago and see my spike on steps taken while on vacation or at an event, and seeing the patterns of me falling in and out of all the different games I had. R.I.P. buddy. May the guy who picked you up at a pawn shop enjoy all the silly 3D pictures I took with that camera.

Re: Site News: Love What We Do? Become A Nintendo Life Supporter!

Desrever

I like this plan, and support the endeavor! Currently in a bad place financially and had to discontinue my monthly subscriptions, but hoping to have a stable full time job in the coming months. (If anyone needs a salesforce/crm admin, hit me up!)

Broke now, but you will have my future money.

Re: Splatoon 3's Next Splatfest Is A Monster Mashup

Desrever

I can prove that one of these options are real.

Last year, I was star gazing in New Mexico, and having weird issues with my telescope. I kept checking the lens but couldn't find an issue. Then this "person" walked up to us all hunched over, covered in a long cloak. (I say "person" in quotations because they were much taller than any normal human I've ever seen)

I was startled by their size and asked if I could help them out with something. I could barely make out their words, but they mentioned something about needing to get back home, and asked if they could have my telescope. Even though it was having problems, I spent a lot of money on this telescope and I wasn't willing to give it up to some stranger. I asked if there was anything else aside from my telescope that I could help them with, and they bent over getting uncomfortably close to my face to the point where I could smell them and they said
"I could use about three fiddy"

I couldn't believe it! It was the Loch Ness monster trying to swindle me out of my money again. I said "Hell no, you go get back to whatever body of water you came from."

Third time this year thats happened.

Re: Poll: Six Years On, Which Was Nintendo Switch's Best Year So Far?

Desrever

There truly has not been a 'bad year' in the way other consoles have had in the past.

The Switch's launch year was remarkable, ESPECIALLY hot off the heels of the Wii U, it was like night and day.

But I gotta say, 2018 was the year the Switch said "This was not a fluke. We're here to stay" and established itself as a heavy hitter for years to come.

Re: Looks Like Pokémon Trading Already Works On Switch Online's GB & GBA Emulator

Desrever

Honestly, considering that 2 players can play online simultaneously for an NES title, and that the framework from emulation is already in place, online trading isn't off the table. I wouldn't even rule out Pokemon Home compatibility.

Now, getting those 'mons transfered to the N64 for Pokemon Stadium is another issue altogether. THAT might be a bridge too far.

Re: Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! Will Get Popping On Switch This May

Desrever

Bubble Bobble was one of my fav games on NES, and I played a TON of Bust-a-Move when I inherited my older sister's PS1.

While I'm probably not going to be picking this game up myself, I'm always glad to see Bub and Bob show their faces, and genuinely want to see these lil round dino guys stay relevant for years to come.

Re: 'Pocket Card Jockey' Could Come To Switch If Mobile Version Does Well

Desrever

My only reservation for a Switch release is that it cannot be played properly in docked mode. Touch screen is the only real way to move the cards around quick enough in the short time limit games where every second counts. Moving the cursor around to select a card, then selecting the column to place it on is just not intuitive enough, unfortunately.

Re: Thunderful Games Teasing New SteamWorld Announcement

Desrever

Dig 1 & 2 are so much fun. The gameplay loop is so addictive that I could literally start up a new game of Dig at the drop of a hat.... and speaking of "drop of a hat" I absolutely loved Heist as well.

Quest is good. Its not as great as its other Steamworld counterparts, but it is definitely a good game. I beat it, but could not bring myself to 100% the game the way I had all the others.

Re: Review: For The King - A Roguelike RPG That's Best Played With A Friend

Desrever

I'm like 3 years late here, but I played a campaign over the holidays while visiting my sister, and we had a blast. Went home, picked it up on sale, and am slowly clearing out the lore store.

This really scratches an itch I've had for a while. Its NOT a perfect game my any means, but its imperfections come off more as "quaint"

Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally

Desrever

I'm a sucker for special editions and steel book pre-orders. I do enjoy owning the physical cartridge, and not having to take up a chunk of gigs. Buuuut....

The convenience of loading it up without having to swap out cartridges, especially when playing away from home, is a HUGE benefit.

I got Splatoon 3 digitally, because I knew it would be the type of game I'd load up for a quick round here and there. I sort of regret not getting MK8/Smash/BotW digital.

Then there's games like Metroid Dread and Fire Emblem Three Houses. I'll play them obsessively, and even do post game content, then put it away until I get the random itch to revisit it down the road. Those games are perfect for physical.

Re: Video: We Hereby Declare That 2023 Will Be The Year Of 3DS Street Pass

Desrever

After attending a few gaming conventions, I was able to collect all puzzle pieces and 100% clear Find Mii 1 & 2. That one got stolen from me, and after I got a replacement and had to start fresh, I didn't even turn on Streetpass again after that.

3DS remains to be packed full of more features than the Switch, and to this day feels like a more complete system.

Re: Anniversary: Super Famicom Favourite 'Final Fantasy V' Is 30 Years Old

Desrever

The music for this game was amazing, which is to be expected. But the plot and characters were not nearly as memorable as other entries in the series.

The job system and gameplay though? Easily the best out of all the NES/SNES trilogies. They took everything that worked from FFIII and made it sing.

I feel similarly about X-2. Not saying FFX was perfect, but X2 felt like a cheap cash grab... except for the fantastic Dress Sphere battle system which immediately took me back to how well FFV handles their job system.

Re: Nintendo Download: 1st December (North America)

Desrever

I watched my brother-in-law play through Inscryption on PS5 not too long ago, so I already know all the surprising twists and turns along the way, but the gameplay hook was entertaining enough that I'm ready to go all in and play through it again just so I can try to clear the post-game challenges.

Re: Splatoon 3's First Big Run Event Announced For Mid-December

Desrever

I had planned a big event for my D&D campaign that will span all of this Saturday & Sunday, and for the last month or so, I've been worried that it will overlap the first Big Run event. I'm incredibly relived that I can enjoy the first Big Run to its fullest without having to compromise my other incredibly nerdy hobby
