Re: Amazon Spain Leaks An Upcoming 'King Kong' Game For Switch

Desrever

@rjejr Though the announcement was pulled, DC still showcased its "Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong" miniseries. It seemed way out of left field, but hearing that there was supposed to be a GvsK announcement makes the comic seem way less random.

Never been big on King Kong, but I'm a pretty big Godzilla fan.

Re: Soapbox: Switch Is Only A Classic Or Two From Being The Perfect PlayStation History Lesson

Desrever

To this day, the X-Box exclusives that have released on the Switch seem mind boggling. Not even a full decade ago, the very thought of Nintendo having this sort of catalog was laughable. The Wii U was already on life support, the 3DS was winding down, and the "NX" was still just a rumor. Here on Nintendo Life, when the new game releases for the week were posted, the comment sections were filled with fatalistic "Nintendoom" postings and an overall disappointment in the piles of shovelware.

The Switch is by no means a perfect system. Even the 3DS had heaps of out-of-the-box features that the Switch lacks, but this is by far the most impressive showing we've had to date. I'm just hoping the next system is more of a "Super Switch" than a "Switch U".

Re: Talking Point: How Does Switch's Year 7 Compare To Previous Nintendo Consoles?

Desrever

I think that the Switch install base may not have entirely transitioned to 4k televisions yet. They've historically tried to cater to the broader audience rather than just those who are chasing the 'cutting edge' of what's currently on the market.

Very soon, 4k will be the dominant TV set for the average family, and thats when Nintendo will go full in.

But of course, PS/XB will have an 8k+ system out shortly thereafter for 3x the cost.

This is the way of things.

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Of The Year Of 2023 So Far?

Desrever

For me, I knew it was going to be Tears if the Kingdom, but I didn't grasp exactly HOW enthralled I'd become. Way more than I was with BotW, which I wasn't expecting.

I have already passed the 300 hour mark on TotK, and still haven't beat Ganondorf. That being said, aside from Korok seeds, my remaining side quests are few, and Im starting to run out of distractions to keep me from hopping down that big scary hole.

(Also, the subheader "Tears of the Switch-dom" sounds pretty kinky)

Re: Feature: 8 Strangest Super Mario Urban Legends - Which Mario Myths Are True?

Desrever

I remember hearing about "the negative world" in Super Mario Bros 1 at several poins in my childhood. I imagined it was some cool black and white stage, or had reverse coloring or something.

Years and years later, it turned out to be real. But it was just the 1-3 water level that spits you back out at the beginning when you reach the end. Still good to know that my classmates weren't entirely full of it.

Re: Feature: The One Thing Wii Did Much Better Than Switch

Desrever

Ah, the fond memories of ceremoniously lighting the candles in front of the TV before we begin an hours-long Smash Bros Brawl session.

I very much enjoy motion controlled aiming in games, but only when paired with traditional joysticks. I prefer to have joystick sensitivity all the way up for broad movements, and motion control all the way down for precision aiming.

Re: Feature: How Super Mario World Became An Award-Winning Book Of Verse

Desrever

This kind of prose is right up my alley. My father recently passed away, and there's about 5 or 6 games for NES that he would play with me when I was younger. So now certain titles like Dragon Spirit, Bomberman 2, and Sky Shark are tied to core memories of my dad sitting next to me with a can of coke, smelling faintly of cigarettes.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Wish You Knew Sooner In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

Desrever

If there's an item you're harvesting for (apples as an example) you can fuse a bunch of them together into a pile, and save that as a favorite Autobuild.

That way, when you select the autobuild, it makes the purple aura suck up all the items around to complete build. You don't have to use up Zonite to make it, just cancel, and it dumps everything collected at your feet.

Re: Feature: 21 Amazing Shield Fuse Combos In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Desrever

One of my favorite so far has been fusing the Wing Device to the shield. When you hop up to do a shield surf, it gets you slightly higher off the ground. Just high enough to pull out your bow and trigger the bullet time effect.
(Also its just high enough to trigger the item dupe glitch for those of us with a more devious nature)

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Incredible Opening Is One Of Nintendo's Best

Desrever

@Martijn87 Honestly, I felt the same. It wasn't bad by any stretch, but it just didn't grab my attention the same way as waking up in the resurrection pool did. I think the opening area is the one thing that BotW excelled at.
The game really starts to open up when you get the Ultrahand ability, and by the time you hit the ground, you'll be hooked. If you liked Breath of the Wild even just a little bit, you will love whats waiting for you in this game.

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Plan For Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

Desrever

I'll be honest. The opening stretch was a bit of a slog until I got the Ultrahand power, then it really started to pop off.

I hit the surface about an hour or so ago. Found a well thats usually filled with dirt that now leads to an underground area, and I've just been hopping from one thing to the next.

I plan to visit Hateno Village, then make my way to Kakariko. I've got my eyes set on Tarrey Town on my way to check out the Akkalla lab, but given how easily distracted I am with every single destination, Im probably not going to get myself over that way for a good week or two from now.

Re: Random: Japanese Orchestra Performs Two-Hour Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Concert

Desrever

I also came to the comments to talk about the Symphony of the Goddess tour.

It was pretty dang magical, and I had chills running down my spine the entire time. Even got a little teary-eyed at some parts, which caught me off guard, as I had no idea the LttP Dark World theme was one of my soft-spots.

I'm giving this concert a listen now, but it pales in comparison to being there in person. If a new concert in announced state side, I'll absolutely shell out for some tickets.

Re: Pokémon GO's Monthly Earnings Have Fallen To A Five-Year Low

Desrever

I was logging in daily for the first 5 years. Helping my nephews out with remote raids kept me going for quite some time, then they stopped giving out free remote raid passes, and I stopped playing altogether.

Not that I want it to fail, but I really can't think of anything they could announce that would pull me back in at this point.

Re: Zelda's VA Officially Confirms Her Return In Tears Of The Kingdom

Desrever

My second playthrough I played around with language settings, and after trying a few options I actually found myself really enjoying the Spanish voice acting.

I'll probably start off in English, then switch to post game when its just going to just be "Daruk's protection is ready to roll!" and "The Blood Moon rises once again..." over and over and over again.

Re: Talking Point: What Is A 'Traditional' Zelda Game, Anyway?

Desrever

@JohnnyMind Up until 2016, Zelda games came in 2 flavors: Top Down Zeldas (og LoZ, LttP, et all) and 3D Zeldas (OoT, WW, TP)

Breath of the Wild truly is a new type of Zelda game. I think at one point Reggie called it "Open Air" genre. But because it is IN 3D, though, I do feel like this is going to replace the 3D type of Zelda games.

And as for Top Down Zeldas, I also fear that they may fade into obscurity. We got Links Awakening which was a fantastic port of an amazing Gameboy game. And before that, we got Link Between Worlds, which was ALSO based on a previous entry.

(And In my not-so-humble opinion, Link Between Worlds is actually the best "Zelda" in regards to what a 'traditional' Zelda game is. I love that game so much)

And as far as Breath of the Wild goes, during my first playthrough while I was slowly figuring out what the game was like, the one thing I felt in regards to previous games was a strong relation to the open-exploration of the original Legend of Zelda on NES.

And again, I really DO love BotW. Its not perfect, and I certainly have my gripes about it. But the physics engine is nothing like I've ever played before. I'm honestly hoping TotK ends up bridging the gap between traditional 3D Zeldas, and this new "Open Air" genre.

Re: Talking Point: What Is A 'Traditional' Zelda Game, Anyway?

Desrever

The original LoZ laid the groundwork for LttP, which in turn laid the groundwork for OoT.

But that being said, every game after has just been improved variations on those same blueprints, until BotW. (Zelda 2, notwithstanding)

I dont get nostalgia tingles from BotW the way I did with any other the others, even though I absolutely love that game.

Skyward Sword gave me all the nostalgia tingles but wasn't nearly as fun of an experience, overall.

So, its a weird in-between place to be stuck in the middle of as a lifetime Zelda fan. I do think that TotK might be leaning more into the traditional Zelda vibes, while also staying true to what BotW set up.

Re: Talking Point: With One Month 'Til TOTK, What's Left For You To Do In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild?

Desrever

My conundrum is that I've been collecting Korok seeds in Master Mode, and have around 700. In my regular save file, I only have about 250. But I can't beat the Master Sword Trials on hard mode. No matter what I've tried doing, I just can't. So unless I want to collect all the seeds again in Normal Mode, I'll never be able to quite get everything on the same save.

Also, I thought it would be fun to keep the map hidden, and not activate any of the shiekah towers, aside from the first one. I might need to revise that plan if I want to dig out those last Koroks. Maybe finally activating all the towers is how I'll celebrate the TotK release.

Re: Nintendo Wants Discord To Reveal Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Art Book Leaker

Desrever

9 out of 10 times, its the printer they go to. Someone's job is to review the documents and make sure the bleed & trim lines are in the right place, and make sure the coloring is set to CMYK mode for the 4-color offset printing. (I used to have this job, if that wasn't clear)

It usually comes in an email attachment or a Google drive link, so its very easy to just "Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V" the entire project.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Movie Physical Soundtrack Revealed By 'iam8bit'

Desrever

Even people I know who thought the movie was trash had nothing but praise for the soundtrack.

I have a few cassettes I've acquired within the last 5 years (Protomen: Cover Up, Sayonara Wild Hearts: Fading Memories, and a few I found second hand of my personal favorite albums)

But I rarely play them, since the best way to ruin a cassette tape is to put it in a cassette player.
