At the start of December 2022, we reported that a trademark for 'Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On!' had been filed by Game Freak. At the time, we weren't quite sure what this would be in reference to, but now we have our answer (thanks, VGC).
We've got good news and bad news, folks. The good news is that the cult classic 3DS title Pocket Card Jockey is getting a new, modern release with revamped 3D visuals for the horse racing events. The bad news is that it isn't coming to the Switch. Instead, Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! will be released exclusively on Apple Arcade for iOS devices.
Launching on January 20th, the game will effectively be the same as the original 3DS title, albeit with revamped visuals and no dual screen support. Nevertheless, we've no doubt that it will be a ruddy good game, as we gave the original a solid 7/10 in our review.
Here's a look at the game's official description:
Saddle up for this unique solitaire and horse-racing hybrid from Game Freak, creators of the Pokémon franchise! Pocket Card Jockey originally released to great acclaim on the Nintendo 3DS, and while the basic rules are the same, the racing segments have been reborn in glorious 3-D!
Focus your mind and clear cards with subsequent numbers in quick succession. The more cards you clear, the better your horse's mood will be—which helps them charge energy during races!
Your position on the track determines the difficulty of your solitaire rounds. There are also special cards that can be picked up if you run over them while racing. These cards provide a variety of benefits, including leveling up your horse, learning new skills, or improving your performance in a race. Be careful though, because running too much on the outside of the track will cause your horse to lose precious stamina!
If your steed has charged tons of energy and has plenty of stamina left in the tank, they'll sprint their heart out once you enter the homestretch. Make sure not to run into other horses as you aim for first place!
Take the beloved steeds you've grown on the racetrack and pair them up on the farm. The foal they produce will inherit their abilities and become your new partner on the racecourse! Breed generation after generation of racehorses in your quest to conquer all the biggest, most prestigious races in the world!
Here's hoping Game Freak will see fit to release Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! on the Switch at some point!
What do you make of this release on Apple Arcade? Are you happy to see Pocket Card Jockey see a new lease of life, or would you rather it show up on the Switch? Let us know!

It is a better game than Scarlet and Violet!
Honestly this is great to see. The fact it's on Apple Arcade means that it's bound for Switch as soon as the exclusivity ends, plus Pocket Card Jockey is a type of game that fits the mobile environment pretty well so I bet the new game/version will still turn out great
It should be interesting to see the price-point of the game ... and its future release plans (post iOS).
On one hand, awesome. More people get to play it. On the other hand, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Welp, you still have 2 months to buy the 3DS original, so long as your 3DS account is connected to your Switch one.
@mike_intv No price point for this one as it’s exclusive to Apple Arcade, which is a subscription service.
Never played this but it looks cute, to me their secret best game is Drill Dozer on GBA.
@jump okay.
Hopefully it's not like a year long exclusive (it probably is). Been hoping this game would find its way to Switch. Think my whole family would love it.
But it wasn't a 3DS exclusive, it was also released on iOS in Japan before shutting down there.
As someone who uses Apple Arcade on the daily, I’m a bit miffed over the fact that this is the 3rd solitaire game on Apple Arcade in the last 3 or so months (alongside Mobilityware Solitaire and Solitaire Stories already being popular inclusions). But, at least its an incredibly well regarded one.
@mike_intv
It might also be time to use another free trial for Apple Arcade.
@HammerGalladeBro So it's currently exclusive, yes?
@jump This is probably true, unfortunately.
Game Freak's best game.
The 3DS' best game.
Apple Arcade's best game.
Best game.
@HammerGalladeBro So if it shut down, it means it's no longer accessible, thus meaning it's currently exclusive again... 😉
This is the perfect phone game and I’d buy it in an instant. Why the bloody hell is it an Apple Arcade exclusive!?
Ugh... It WOULD have to be exclusively available for a subscription-only Crapple service...
Gamefreak joined the dark side. Bad thing is that i already used 2 free trials of Apple's subscription service. I think its the worst deal in gaming. Actually there are some cool RPG's but i couldn't sit down and play them
@Angelic_Lapras_King Or just purchase it through Nintendo's website.
I have said this dozens of times, but I wish Nintendo followed Apple Arcade’s model. They have enough cash to sponsor a few developers for a few exclusive games per month. This would be a no brainer for me.
They could easily remake this game for the Nintendo Switch as a Pokemon spinoff, all they got to do was replace all the horses with Ponyta, Taurus, Deerling, Sawsbuck, Buckston, Growlithe, Arcanine, and Rapidash and the generic human characters with Pokemon Trainers. The Solitaire cards could be replaced by Pokemon cards.
honestly the quick-burst nature of this game makes it a perfect fit for mobile.
one could knock out one or two quick rounds while waiting for a bus, or during downtime at work.
I don't spend money on app games, but I would have opened my wallet for this one... except that I'm an android user. Unfathomably saddened by this news.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Or wait for them to stop giving you a means to buy it and just mod your ds/play on your phone?
@rockodoodle Except Apples model is disgusting? All they do is throw cash at existing games and make them Apple only, allowing less people to access them like with Into The Breach. Hardly supporting them and just being a greedy dirty company.
And to anyone bemoaning it being apple only. With a decent phone, you can emulate iOS and play any of the exclusives that way. Unless of course your morality meter is permanently bent and think Apple really needs that $10.
@Otherboard
I saw that on my second read through — after seeing other comments. Hence my reply about using another free trial for the service.
@Serpenterror spot on. I get they probably don't want to only ever do Pokemon but this game would have done serious numbers with that branding. But then it probably would have been ported to Switch with a $60 price tag.
If this comes to the Switch I'll pick it up.
AAAAAAAA LET'S GOOOOO (sucks it's on Apple Arcade but hopefully it'll come to switch eventually)
Aw, nuts! Was looking forward to this. Hopefully other people are right, and the exclusivity is timed. Truly wonderful game, really unique, and with lovely characters. Also, as addictive as sin.
Ever since Apple Arcade there are no good games on the Apple App store.
You lost me at Apple Arcade.
@GammaPhonic Because Apple pays the BIG BUCKS.
Sucks that its apple exclusive at the moment. Not a big fan of those 3D models. Maybe they will look better in action, the 2D assets had much more character to them.
@Coalescence If it's a smaller digital only title then it won't be, Kirby Fighters 2 and Kirby's Dream Buffet aren't even $60 games.
I like this game, but OMG does it CHEAT!
Basically, once you get past the tutorial races, they artificially increase the difficulty by stacking the deck against you. It gets real frustrating real fast.
I've had a few lucky horses, but I'm not good enough at breeding type games to figure out which stats will "uncheat" the game.
I'm guessing it's not coming to Switch because it would be a lot more difficult to play it without a touch screen. Not impossible, I guess, but your times would be a lot slower.
@jump You're quite a card.
@HammerGalladeBro I didn’t know that! But that means it is exclusive now, however. Until this Apple Arcade released anyway.
I loved PCJ and a 7/10 is way too low for such an addictive spin on solitaire and the grand Japanese tradition of horse raising simulation.
Considering the eShop is closing soon... I hope they don't forget about HarmoKnight too.
Lots of apple arcade came over so good news. Did end my apple arcade subscription to save up for heating etc but a few nice games like this and i wilk rekoin for a bit.
Did buy it on the 3ds obly last year, so can play it there anyway.
As someone who has Apple Arcade this is very good news for me
Seems perfect for a phone game, hoping it comes to Google Play at some point!
I would LOVE this game on Android. 🤞🤞
@Fighting_Game_Loser I hope you’re correct on it coming to Switch eventually. I have Apple Arcade, mainly for the kids, but I do love Fantasian. I would love to see that and Pocket Card Jockey to make it to the Switch!
@Kyloctopus lololol
This is a brilliant stupidly addictive game. I’ve played this for years.
I will point out that it’s only Game Freaks Secret best game because of stupid reviewers not recognising it’s greatness and awarding it a score of 7 out of 10 😉.
No joke, this is one of my most played 3DS games. I hope a sequel comes to Switch, it’s honestly a blast
@jump I like it. So ok
making something exclusive to Apple is such a stupid decision.
I'm not going to go buy a second phone. Why in the world would I ever do that? Its not like just buying another console for exclusives
I’m a big Apple Arcade fan and I’m okay with this, but yeah I wish it came to Switch as well.
This was a game I struggled to understand and could NEVER win so maybe I’ll give another go.
Okay, but why not Android, though?
@Big_Fudge I don’t mean for their big releases. I would pay $5 extra per month for Street Pass type games, Pocket Jockey, Part Time UFO, Wario etc.
>GameFreak’s secret best game
>7/10
Says a lot about GameFreak’s usual output, doesn’t it?
GF’s best game uh? Pj is awesome but it’s no HARMOKNIGHT please port (and give it some score based online leaderboards while at it)!
Also, ugh, AA exclusivity means that if it’ll ever come it’ll be 6 months/1 year from now… IF (even TEMBO was never ported to a Nintendo console and that one’s also great!)
I wish I responded sooner!
At first I played this game a lot on my 3DS, so much so, that I wore a little circle on the bottom corner from playing the game.
After playing it for 15 to 20 hours, I realized that it was too random for me. Even with breeding my horses, I never felt like I was building a mastery of the game. it was simply how the cards played.
And yes, as someone mentioned, it is addictive. I realized that I was playing not out of fun, but addiction. it was weird.
And I LITERALLY just bought the game on the 3DS.
...but this release is still Apple Arcade related so it's not a huge loss.
@kalosn
Exactly: that one is truly Game Freak’s secret best game; Pocket Card Jockey isn’t even “secret” given everyone and their brother knows about it and will recommend it even if they haven’t played it. Besides, HarmoKnight’s 10th anniversary is the day after the 3DS eShop closes!
