I love that these systems connect to NSO and you can actually play them! This was something talked about a while back and it’s actually happening! Been really itching to play AC recently but just haven’t had the time. It’s that time of year for me… this news came at the exactly right time. Now I just need a Switch 2…
Unlimited inventory is a positive for me. I just want to experience the game and not have to backtrack constantly and all that. I understand that being an aspect of the tension but... nah, can't go back. Silent Hill 1/2/3 are examples of keeping the game scary while allowing unlimited inventory. Limited inventory is counter-intuitive to me. Like, carrying unlimited items around isn't okay but these chests that are all interlinked/connected somehow is (can access items I dropped in one from another?) I'll take my unlimited inventory, thank you!
Ok now this is pretty awesome… I don’t have a switch 2 yet but I’m getting more and more tempted. I have my 3DS version though so maybe I can hold out a tad longer 😬
The criticism here about the restriction to a single city is exactly why I decided in the very beginning to not get this any time soon. I’ve always enjoyed Pokémon because of the varying environments and going to a snow area or a lava area or a lake, etc. Without that, I’m not really driven to jump on this one just yet. I also don’t have a Switch 2 yet 😬… Seems like this will be fun when I eventually pick it up on a sale though!
I think a lot of people miss the point of why this is a problem.
Animal Crossing is a very kid friendly game with very distinct, considered, and unique look.
Any knockoff copying that exact look can use the look but potentially have non-kid friendly content in it.
The issue is when the copycat starts having screenshots pop up of the non-kid-friendly content, or just something not within the original Animal Crossing vision and you can’t tell the difference between the games.
In this example, most folks will see the picture above and say “oh wow it’s animal crossing!” Imagine if the character had a racy outfit on or had a speech bubble with expletives inside it. The average joe sees that and starts thinking “wow Animal Crossing changed!”
Nobody should be copying that distinct look. Copy the gameplay but don’t copy the art style. They should be distinguishable from each other. This is a blatant ripoff.
Another example: nobody got mad when Axiom Verge released even though it had essentially the same gameplay as Metroid.
If your character looked like a reskinned Samus, it’d be a different story.
Game is a 9/10 for me. It’s brutally difficult even on normal for me though: first play, I used all my lives on level 1. Second play I got to level 3 and was utterly obliterated within the first 3 minutes or so. I’m thinking of dropping down to Easy just to beat the game once or twice, then I’ll ramp it up. I’m also someone who has a very hard time with Thunder Force 3 though. Anyway, it’s been a long time coming and I’m absolutely stoked to play it and get further and further (and hopefully better lol).
If I were to take a wild guess, Ren and Stimpy isn’t included because either Nickelodeon doesn’t have the rights anymore or they don’t want the flack from the sexual abuse allegations to resurface from creator Michael John Kricfalusi (John K). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kricfalusi
I just want Castlevania 64/Legacy of Darkness in some form! Konami release the next collection or release it on NSO! I will finally reach my final form!!!
My only complaint with this and its predecessor is the music. Except for a few select tracks, it lags behind other games in the series. The few tracks that I like, I love, but most of the music isn’t as memorable as other games in the series.
This sort of kind of works since some of the bosses in Revenge were takes on famous personalities… Spider-man being one example. Isn’t there also like a Sonic and tails (or maybe a Mario) statue in that one level in the background in Shinobi 3? I can’t for the life of me find it online though! Point being, makes sense in a sort of Easter eggy/traditional way to have this kind of DLC/bonus content.
I had this game on PS1 and although I had trouble even getting past level 1, I’m excited to give it another go! I can’t imagine I’ve gotten better in my older age so I’m sure it’ll be even worse lol. Still, extremely excited for this (and getting my butt whooped again!)
Isn’t the argument that Palworld isn’t ripping off Pokémon but it’s ripping off Pokémon’s designs? I can see a Charizard/Charizard-like in the background in one of the screenshots on this “game” above. I’ve seen screenshots of what appear to be Pokémon holding full-on guns in screenshots of Palworld. I’m sure that’s not the image Nintendo want associated with their designs.
@ShieldHero have you not read any of the articles? It’s not easy to just ignore, in fact, we want to hide entire publishers. Why? Because this slop prevents other actual games with work and thought put into them from showing. You haven’t sift through this crap which tends to hide the actual releases. Publishers have been interviewed about this and they say, yes, it’s tough to be noticed in the sea of trash.
Yes, you can ignore it, but you’re potentially also ignoring and scrolling past actual effort.
I think it’s fair to have a company vet something that will have or use its name or IPs attached to it — perhaps even at the centerpiece — before okay’ing their usage.
This honestly may be the game that makes me get a Switch 2. Metroid is the only other one. I love this art style so much so I’m willing to try each and every one in the style that gets released, especially this style RPG.
@SalvorHardin I really do wish this were above 30 on average but being able to play it handheld makes it the winner for me among the consoles, even with the 30fps average. Wish it was 60 but not a dealbreaker. In the end, reviews will speak for it and hopefully light a fire under their butts to optimize better next time.
@DemonKow I definitely understand there is likely some optimization stuff going on here and there’s really no reason this kind of game shouldn’t be averaging above 30, even running at 60 most of the time. That’s definitely an issue!
Not a dealbreaker for me at all. I grew up with 30fps or lower and feel it gives a more cinematic feel to things overall. Perhaps that’s just my way of casting positive light but wholeheartedly, it generally doesn’t bother me for lots of games.
But like, also Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight…. Games where you can pick up items when you return to where you died last. I do like that mechanic in games quite a bit. Definitely ups the tension and makes things interesting!
I keep saying, when the next StarFox gets released, this would be an amazing peripheral to have. It could have your actual face showing up with the radio chatter as you dogfight with your friends over NSO.
I want it so bad but I just had to stop myself from tapping preorder because I have an actual working DMG that I can put on display. ….I still want it though, look at that thing! It’s perfectly priced!!
This game is absolutely worth your time. I give it a 9 or 10. It really is one of the best Castlevania-likes I’ve played, and one of the best metroidvanias too.
This is a solid list- kudos to the artists putting the work in for these! Can’t imagine even Nintendo would think this would blow up to what it is now.
Omg this looks amazing. Not even really focusing too much on the adult nature of it, it just looks like a really cool homage for us who grew up with the original red/blue/yellow and want a little more oomph with a side of nostalgia. I’ll be getting this! I need to read a bit more about it but I wonder if there is a ROM version available so I can play it on my Analogue Pocket.
These are all good games!! Rayman 2 was awesome and I’m happy to have the 3DS port. Forsaken was mine-blowing at the time with the lighting effects… Donkey Kong 64 is long overdue and they’d have to be nuts to not release the OG smash bros. I know each iteration is better than the last on the latter, so why go backwards, but seriously that game pulls at my nostalgia strings hard. I can’t wait to play these timed target practice missions for each character again!
@Broosh this just saved me from a purchase of an otherwise good-looking game. I want to make informed choices and I just don’t want to support AI when used like this.
When I was in Japan in May, I saw the box out for preorder at Game Hobby Kan and I was like omg I didn’t know this was out! I’m actually pretty excited about this one because of how radical and dark it is. Don’t have a Switch 2 just yet but it’s assuring knowing I’ll be able to upgrade for free when I eventually get my mitts on one. Now to decide which compliments the dark themes better: a clear switch 1 box or a bright blood red switch 2 box…
Well crap.. I remember when the first was announced and lots of folks were excited to finally get to 3. Well here we are and it sucks to say but I wish it hadn’t come at all, at least this way. I have the first and avoided the second because it seemed like the exact same complaints from 1 were present in 2. I decided to wait until 3 which is held as the best one in the series and wow what a let down. Womp womp.
I’ve always avoided games with procedural generation and now I’ll definitely be avoiding games that use AI as well.
I’m with some folks in here: they should really start releasing these older games in their old state but with some modern enchantments like fast forward, rewind, save states, and like… cleaned up sound maybe. These half finished half baked half arse “remasters” are not worth anyone’s time. I like either end of the scale: original version or a full blown remake like silent hill 2 remake. This in between stuff can really destroy your fan base.
Death Stranding 2 this weekend and for a loooooong time into the future! I think the only thing that’s going to break me away from this run is if the Analogue 3D actually releases in July — then it’ll be Bomberman 64, Castlevania legacy of darkness, and all my other N64 games that I’ll jump over to.
