Following last week's Nintendo Direct delay due to the earthquake in Hokkaido, the presentation - hosted by Shinya Takahashi - has now been and gone.
The broadcast didn't waste any time, immediately revealing Luigi's Mansion 3 would be coming to the Switch in 2019. A brief segment focused on the 3DS was next in line, announcing new but old games like Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn. The attention then returned to the Switch as Takahashi explained more about the online service arriving later this month - including the reveal of a wireless NES controller for use with classic titles.
Other announcements throughout included New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Switch and a special Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hardware bundle. Yoshi’s Crafted World was locked in for Spring 2019 and a new RPG by Game Freak was revealed. Splatoon 2 and Mario Tennis Aces also got some time in the spotlight. Arguably the biggest Switch announcement of the presentation was the confirmation the Animal Crossing series would be making a return in 2019. The assistant pup Isabelle was revealed as a playable fighter for Ultimate at the same time.
On the third-party front we found out Katamari Damacy REROLL - a remaster of the original game - would be arriving on the Switch later this year. Cities Skylines also got a surprise announcement and is out right now on the Switch. A Capcom Beat ’Em Up Bundle is soon bringing a collection of classic games to Nintendo's hybrid device and Warframe is due out on 20th November. The Final Fantasy series got plenty of love as well - with multiple announcements and another mention of Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD and the upcoming remaster of Crystal Chronicles.

For a Direct where I wasnt expecting anything big, Luigi's Mansion and some third parties were sights for sore eyes!
What did I think? It’s obvious that Nintendo grabbed the wrong file and this was the real E3 Direct.
One word i can say....
AAAAAAAAAAGH....!!!
A+ Direct.
1. Animal Crossing
2. Luigi's Mansion 3
3. Final Fantasy 7, 10, 10-2, 12
4. Capcom Beat Em Bundle
5. Smash Bros Isabella joining the fight.
and much better then E3 2018.
Best Direct of the year. And yes, that includes E3.
A Homerun
It was awesome. Opening with Luigi's Mansion and closing with Animal Crossing was great. All the Final Fantasy stuff was.unexpected, Yoshi's CW looks super fun.
Luigi's Mansion 3! (Better bring out 1&2!)
Daemon X Machina
Super Mario Party
Starlink
That's all lol
Too much Final Fantasy. 9.5/10.
Downwell announced in the Japanese direct!!
Also, Town looks pretty promising. Wish there was something on the Dragon Quest front though...
Pretty stoked anyway!!
@MoonKnight7 I think this spreading announcements across the year is begining to bite them in the ass. E3 would've been a lot more interesting with a Bayo 3 reveal and Home. Still, doesnt make this direct any less amazing
I thought it was okay, Luigi's Mansion and the Final Fantasy stuff was the only thing that interested me, could care less about the other stuff
Pretty excellent Direct, but I'm not entirely sold on Nintendo Switch Online just yet. Why Nintendo refused to talk about the NSO Special Offers is just beyond me. Oh well, I guess.
Animal Crossing
Cities Skylines
Civilization 6
All the Final Fantasy
Mario U Deluxe
Katamari
Luigi 3
NES controllers
The only thing I am not thrilled by, is the lack of information about OS 6.0.0. When they talked about the online, I'd assume they'd also talk about that. I was really hoping we'd get folders, themes and an activity log.
Happy it wasn't 3 hours of Smash. Some great surprises too!
Despite the port complaints, I'm personally interested in some of the offerings. Chocobo Mystery Dungeon, maybe Machina, happy with Isabelle and maybe will look at the new AC (or at least will observe the mobile game alternatively), mulling over purchasing FF7 yet again, and Luigi's Mansion 3 actually looks fun!
Honestly blew my expectations.
I am SO happy about Katamari. I literally started cheering and clapping. It’s a bit disappointing that it is just a remake of the first game but here’s hoping we also get a remake of the second! PLEASE don’t be digital only... Edit: It’s getting physical.
I fear Starlink means we won’t see a real Starfox game on Switch. I hope that’s not the case.
Animal Crossing and Luigi’s Mansion 3 were awesome announcements. Can’t wait for some AC on Switch. I hope Luigi is a little more substantial than the first two games were (not that they were bad). Yoshi looks cute, albeit easy. Next year should be more fun for me than this one has been.
Isabelle in Smash is also great. Expected another character beside her though, which makes me think there aren’t many more newcomers to show, but all I ever really wanted is K. Rool so I’m content. They’ll probably do one more Smash direct I’d guess.
I’ll finally get to play FFVII, but I kind of don’t even want to anymore (not an RPG fan much anymore). It’s great to see these games on Nintendo though. Weird about no VIII with all the other ones that are coming.
Switch Online still rubs me the wrong way for some reason. Maybe it’s that we still don’t know about the “special” discounts! I also really want SNES or later games instead of NES but whatever.
Peachette is weird AF and makes no sense. My partner only plays the 2D Mario games so he will be thrilled when I buy this for him eventually. I personally find them quite bland.
I give it a 4/5. Metal Gear Solid 1-4 or Dixie Kong playable in Smash would have made it a perfect 5.
I couldn’t watch it unfortunately. But some of the games and announcements definitely caught my attention and for me to look forward too.
It was absurdly good. One of their best.
I may be in the minority but I was left wanting more. Wanted some zelda titles announced. Wanted different nes online games but they'll suffice for now. Luigis mansion 3 and nsmb u were my highlights. Not overall upset but not ecstatic.
I think we can all welcome back SquareEnix with full earnest now, yes?
Let's make up for lost time, SE! <3
I love the direct!
No footage of Reggie playing Fortnite
also i wished they explained their online network more since all they told us is stuff we already knew
The switch came out swinging and just keep hitting home runs.in glad Nintendo is back in the game.to me the switch is back in the snes era game after game after game.
It was wonderful. Best Direct of the year in my opinion. Capcom Beat em Collection, Final Fantasy XII, Warframe Release Date, Katamari Damacy, Yoshi's Crafted World and Luigi's Mansion 3 were the highlights for me. Curious to not see Saints Row, Red Faction Guerilla, No More Heroes and Fire Emblem though. Still waiting on a new Golden Sun and F-Zero, I guess. I'm pleased and can't wait to play a ton of Final Fantasy next year!
Honestly, for a September Direct, that's what was needed. A lot of quickfire announcements sure to please pretty much everybody. For every "I couldn't care less" level announcement they made, there was an announcement that was big deal to me like World of Final Fantasy Maxima, Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon remake or Yo-Kai Watch Busters getting the update (I bet people forgot about that!).
Oh, and just casually dropping Isabelle and a new Animal Crossing title at the very end was devious. I love it.
No Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Boo, I say. BOO!
Animal Crossing alone makes it totally awesome.
This Direct will suffice but I was underwhelmed. A lot of it seemed like shovelware. Square-Enid appears to be jumping on the cash grab train. Only Final Fantasy 12 looks like a worthwhile port. Luigi’s Mansion 3 was a pleasant surprise. Cities Skyline and Civ 6 look like horrible ports. Mario Party looks to par, not incredible. Game Freak’s new RPG looks interesting. Still no achievement system to correlate with the online service. Daemon X Machina is the show highlight for me.
I loved it! Next year is killer
It was pretty good. I'm happy to see that there's gonna be a third Luigi's Mansion game and it's nice to see Yoshi's Crafted World since its E3 2017 presence! Maybe I'll get Final Fantasy VII, IX, and X-X2 for my Switch, as well. Nintendo totally got me with how revealed that Isabelle is gonna be playable in SSBU, too XD
My only real gripe with today's Direct is the Switch Online segment. I actually think it was quite cute with all the Mario characters and everything, but it told us everything we already know. (I'll probably still get it so I can keep playing MK8D and other games online, but I got college to deal with!) Also, if they wanted to port another Wii U game to the Switch, I would've picked Super Mario 3D World over New Super Mario Bros. U. That's just me, though.
As a 3DS owner it was horrible what happened to all those unannounced games I mean at least I expected 1 good game but not just another port if they were gonna just port games to 3ds port something worthy like Mother 3 which we never got
Very happy with the Direct. Great surprises but was a little slow in some parts. The thing is, 2019 will be absolutely freaking insane for Switch! Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Luigi’s Mansion, and more!
Luigi's Mansion 3 made it a win for me. I acutally want this year to hurry up and be done with already.
Great Direct. It hit pretty much all the right notes. I will say that while I'll pay up for Online, it doesn't seem very enticing. Hopefully it evolves into something worthwhile. Either way, I'm pumped for pretty much every game they showed on Switch. What a turnaround from the Wii U!
Good presentation. Plenty of variety. A couple of titles that I'm interested in but nothing that drove me wild with excitement. The announcement of Animal Crossing for the Switch left my bank account a bit sad though. I'm gonna have to buy a second console, otherwise my daughters will steal my Switch from me. I better start saving.
@GKO900 I'm speculating that it's because the 3DS might be on its way out soon and Nintendo wanted to focus more on the Switch. The 3DS has been out for years
I expect the next Switch Direct to be much better than this
Peachette for Smash.
I was laughing out loud in delight!
1. Final Fantasy 12 was my favorite (non-tactics) Final Fantasy game. ...The battle system is great.
2. Capcom’s Beat ‘Em Up Bundle... It’s just perfect. It’s what I’ve always wanted but just didn’t know.
3. The price of the online service was really nice too! ...after years of feeling gouged by Microsoft, it’s great to see Nintendo kicking ass and not trying to over-step. Incredibly fair price ($20 a year) and so glad to continue to support them.
@GKO900 As much as I love my 3DS, it’s seven years old, which is a dinosaur in console years. The mere fact that we’re getting anything new for it in 2019 is simply a miracle, especially considering that sales for the 3DS are tanking by the day, even in Japan.
Animal Crossing!!!
3ds is timeless. Give us a new top--down Zelda, Shin Megami, Pokémon, etc. Sales will pick back up.
Amazing!!!
I am super excited that Final Fantasy X and XII are coming to Switch. Demon X Macina looks amazing. Munchkin took be by surprise.
I liked it but no Windwaker HD port. "/
I don’t know about everyone else, but it was a homerun to me. Very happy to be a Switch owner right now. Good variety of games, both genre-wise and gameplay-wise. Glad a few seem to be coming in Sept & Oct. Ready to enjoy the goodness now.
I’m glad for the third party NES games on the NOS. Most of the announcements were pretty cool. I’ll probably get City Sklylines soon, FF VII (especially if it gets a physical release with one or two other Final Fantasy’s), NSMBU when the price drops, and I’ll definitely get Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Animal Crossing when those 2 come out.
@justin233 Nintendo Everything has pictures of Switch box art for Katamari.
That opener of Luigi's mansion sealed it for me from the get go, this was easily one of their best directs yet!
Add Kirby's epic yarn, splatoon 2 updates, new super mario bros deluxe, super mario party, story (working title), yoshi's crafted world and ANIMAL CROSSING and i'm a happy gal. I've been waiting for some of these games for years so just knowing they're in development gets me excited for the future, roll on E3 2019 for more updates
@AlternateButtons My sentiments exactly. I'd say this was a great direct, with the very noteworthy exception of the switch online portion. They gave no new information at all! And even made a point of saying "an expanding list of NES games", as if to emphasize that it's only going to be NES games! They hyped up the cloud saves but did not address the issue of some games not supporting it. Ridiculous.
But other than that yeah, lots of cool announcements. Luigi's Mansion 3! And Yoshi looks to have some interesting mechanics. In the absence of a VC, stuff like Capcom's beat em up bundle is most welcome, and I hope to see more retro collections like this. I'm also interested in the board games. Lots of great stuff coming.
@Prof_Yoshtonics Excellent- will check it out.
@ZaPaMi3
I would have loved a WW port too. And TP. Maybe around Christmas.
Overall, I enjoyed this one more than the E3 Direct. IMO the only things missing were Fire Emblem Three Houses and a mention of Prime 4 (though I wasn't really expecting it to show). We also didn't learn much more about NSO, but meh. I guess another week won't completely kill me.
I think it was well worth the wait, and I even fell for one of the Nintendo trolls. XD
I felt like I passed out after they announced all those "Final Fantasy" games. I loved it.
That was great! Surely something for everyone to get excited about? For me....mmmmm......Ac and Luigi for sure. The nes controller looked tidy. The whole presentation was slick. They’ve really got the switch brand thing down. Love the ongoing support for splatoon and aces too. Need to buy splatoon at some point
I thought it was fantastic!
Capcom Beatemup Collection made me so happy!
Luigi's Mansion 3 was a real surprise, I've never played 1 or 2.I was sure it was going to be a remaster like the 3DS is getting.
Katamari looks right up my street, day one!
Never played a Final Fantasy before, looks like I'm going to get my chance.
Mario Tennis update, very welcome!
Yoshi looks better than ever, can't wait!
Animal Crossing I'm not a fan of but I'll give it another go.
Just a brilliant Direct all round and one of Nintendo's best!
It made E3 look even worse then it probably was.
As always, another Nintendo Direct that fulfills its main objective, show the new games of the following months (or years) and important announcements.
Now, about the games and announcements, I was surprised by some ones, but what I was waiting for, well, really there are good games, anyway, maybe later announce more games than I expect, only to wait a little more.
Good Direct for game announcements...
Yeah I'll be honest Nintendo's online service isn't looking too good right now.
The rest of the direct was solid but man that online portion was a train wreck.
Definitely one of the best. Great announcements all around. And the final part was the cherry on top.
@Vriess I didn't own a Wii U so it's really one of the things I'm looking forward to the most. I guarantee it'll come but I been wanting to play it for years.
@thesilverbrick But if they are bothering porting games might as well port games we never got like the 3 F zero game on gba, Mother 3 or even the Kirby game from Wii U would've better than Epic Yarn I'm never gonna buy a Wii U for that game but I do have a Wii
It was really good. Luigi's Mansion 3 was a great way to start. Looking forward to many of these titles.
Was hoping they would drop a surprise bomb though, like Read Dead Redemption Switch port or GTA V or something massive and 3rd party. But whatever it was still excellent.
@Mars I don't get why people think a platform holder should mandate achievements. They add nothing to gameplay, and they add to replayability artificially. If you like them, fine, but they should be optional, at the developer's discretion.
Meh, honestly. I went in with zero expectations and for the most part, I wasn't really feeling it. It is nice to see Epic Yarn getting a 3DS port, but I'd rather it go on the Switch since from the looks of it, it won't be having co-op mode like its cousin game Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. Yoshi's Crafted World is definitely looking better than I saw it as in 2017, but it's still not bringing me back into the groove like Woolly World did for me. It's nice to see Final Fantasy titles appearing on the Switch, even though I already have most of them on another system. New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is nice to see on Switch for portability purposes, but I already have that (and New Super Luigi U) on my Wii U, so if Nintendo is going to get me to double-dip on this game on the Switch, then they're going to have to do more than just add Toadette and Nabbit as playable characters.
The only things I liked from the direct were Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario Tennis Aces update, and Animal Crossing announcement.
There were some great surprises overall. I felt let down though with The online aspect. It feels so uncertain since Nintendo have not been clear and punctual as to how its online service will work. Mainly, will we be forced to play online after the 18th? The price is great though. I will eventually still purchase the service. I just hope that we aren’t forced to pay for online
Not bad. 2019 is shaping up to be nice, 2018 is mostly awful so far.
One thing I absolutely love: how none of the things that have been announced in the past week that people have been commenting "this was definitely supposed to have been unveiled in the Direct" were actually part of the Direct.
And I'll admit that I believed it in several cases myself. It is so good to be proven wrong in this case.
Amazing Direct IMO. I'm happy for new AC, thrilled about Katamari and Final Fantasy ports, and excited for Warframe.
The totally left-field icing on the cake announcement for today, though? LOTR:LCG announcement from Asmodee Games. This is one of my favorite tabletop games of all time. It is an absolutely fantastic game that I've devoted hundreds of dollars and even more hundreds of hours to.
I won't put that kind of money into a digital version, because I still have all my cards (in Fantasy Flight sleeves and a custom box, thank you very much) ready to play any time I want to. But still happy to be able to play a quick game in bed or on the train, and I'll probably buy at least the base game and a couple of expansions (if they are following the LCG model).
@subpopz
Except for Nintendo doing that for Metroid and Yoshi.
@SuperWeird you know I thought I was the only person who thought that bringing RDR to the switch would be dope. I hope it happens though....wishful thinking
I’m so hyped for Kirby, Luigi, Animal Crossing, etc etc etc
Edit: I swear this isn’t sarcasm
It was good. Not earth shattering, but they reveals for LM3, all those Final Fantasys, a new RPG from Game Freak, Animal Crossing and that Capcom bundle were very nice.
Mediocre. Very little that interested me, primarily Luigi's Mansion 3. Other than that, basically nothing good.
@Mgene15 And the 2019 Pokemon game.
Nintendo breaking that rule for 2017 is part of the reason why that E3 was so good.
I thought it pretty good Direct, yes some of the announcements weren’t as interesting as others but they crammed a decent amount of games in one presentation without spending too long on one game. The Final Fantasy portion was probably the best, and least interesting was oddly enough Smash Bros in my opinion. I feel pretty neutral with the Online service
That was a great direct. Lots of E3-esque material.
Nintendo's 2019 looks pretty stacked, assuming nothing is delayed:
Switch:
> NSMBU Deluxe
> Yoshi's Crafted World
> Fire Emblem Three Houses
> Daemon X Machina
> TOWN
> Luigi's Mansion 3
> Animal Crossing
> Pokemon Generation 8
> Metroid Prime 4 (maybe??)
> Bayonetta 3 (maybe??)
> Star Fox Grand Prix (???)
> Metroid Prime Trilogy HD (???)
3DS:
> Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn
> Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
I think one or two of those games could get pushed back to 2020, but that is a pretty stacked first-party lineup for a single year.
@Bolt_Strike
The directs have been so piss poor this year people on here saying that this direct was a home run. Lol
Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing. That is all.
@PanurgeJr An achievement system doesn’t need to be mandated. However, Nintendo should implement the system and give devs a choice to utilize it. I think achievements add to a player’s overall experience with games. Some gameplays schemes might go completely unplayed without the achievement hint system. Plus, they offer lasting/enjoyed memories.
Very happy. Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion 3, FFXII, and Town are all are insta-buys for me. There were other games I'm interested in, but that haven't been confirmed for a physical release yet.
@Mgene15 Seriously. It's very clear that Nintendo has virtually nothing this year. Even the filler games are mediocre. Was hoping we'd at least see a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD port or Spyro Reignited finally get confirmed (since we all know it's coming), but we didn't even get that much.
@Magician
I’m intrigued by town. Mainly because it’s from gamefreak. But what from town did you see made it an instabuy? What is the cool font from the title ? Did we see any gameplay?
2019 will be an insane year for Nintendo. It’s like they finally decided to the fans most everything they were asking for. Luigi Mansion, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and possibly a Metroid Prime 4.
This was hands down better than all of E3 2018 combined. You know I’m right.
It was amazing to me. Animal Crossing AND Luigi's Mansion 3? Plus New Super Mario Bros. U port which is one of the few Wii u games I skipped on and Isabelle in Smash? Oh, and Yoshi's Crafted World looked incredible! So excited! I wish we saw more on Fire Emblem but other than that I loved it. Super hyped.
C'est si bon.
@dublae i too wish for RDR and GTA...
Again,2019 will be solid. But let’s not let Nintendo off the hook for an abysmal 2018 (at least 10 months of this year are empty as hell) indies and ports.. Because Nintendo will try to pull this crap again in 2020.
Pretty awesome if you ask me! Luigi's Mansion 3, Animal Crossing, Yoshi's Crafted World, Diablo III, new footage of Star Fox and Star Wolf in Starlink: Battle for Atlas, NES style Switch controllers, Kirby's Epic Yarn coming to 3DS, and La La La La La La La Katamari Damacy!
Katamari, knowing the history, was the biggest surprise.
Day 1 for me, Smash can honestly wait.
I keep hearing people say that they liked different things from this direct which makes me happy! I think the Wii U was really bad for only having a few good games. Where as the Switch has tons of weird indies to appeal to different people, plus a super broad range of Nintendo titles plus a weird amount of third party support!
The Wii has tons of games but so many were just motion control garbage. I think the Switch already has a better library than the Game Cube or N64. Its like owning a SNES again!
Luigi's mansion, Animal Crossing and 9 Final Fantasy Games, it was great!
Honestly, it seems like the only bummer was the Online Service announcement (going by the Youtube vids ratio), and I kind of attribute that to the announcement not really giving any new information, including the deals for account holders-which they explicitly mentioned they'd bring up later.
Other than that, this was really an amazing Direct. The Online itself is okay, and the door is at least open to some 3rd party games (guessing a bunch from the NES Classic). Plenty of games with online features and local co-op, including a new update for Splatoon 2, a metric TON of JRPG's, Civ 6, Luigi's Mansion 3, the Animal Crossing stuff in general-I adored it. Really, if they just made some changes or notable additions to the Online, it probably would have been perfect.
Oh my goodness this Direct was so amazing. The Yoshi footage and Final Fantasy IX announcements were the definite highlights for me but PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING. I haven't been this hyped for a Direct in a good while. DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT. THANK YOU NINTENDO!!!
I’m fine with ports if the game was never on a Nintendo console. And Final Fantasy is not something to complain about!
People talk about commercially successful games that sold well on other platforms as if that’s a bad thing. Lots of people didn’t own the systems they came from, so we’re happy to play them.
Quite frankly I’m hoping Twilight Princess gets ported because I meant to buy it on the Wii U but didn’t.
Also keep in mind that Nintendo is pumping out first party exclusives at a really steady clip. None of these ports of other good games makes Nintendo less likely to invest in first party games. All they do is pad the library out which makes people on the fence about getting a Switch decide to buy one.
@MarioLover92 I understand that the 3DS it's on it's way out but then they shouldn't have said they have unannounced games (more than one) and say game (only one 😂), now I'm hoping for Atlus to bring Persona Q2 as my last 3DS game for the 3DS
I have mixed feelings.
The Luigi's Mansion 3 announcement was awesome the best thing in the entire Direct.
After that I didn't care much for everything else. I've never played Animal Crossing, so the announcement doesn't mean much to me.
I was waiting for a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD announcement, but was sorely disappointed.
The worst thing was the announcement of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey for Switch... Just another aberration like Resident Evil 7. But even worst because the game is more expensive than the PS4 or Xbox versions but don't get to own it, just rent it for 2 years. That's a very bad taste joke.
So many big announcements... Yet nothing of interest to me 😞
Super excited Luigis mansion 3 and animal crossing next year along with yoshi and Mario deluxe man I'm so excited. The Animal Crossing announcement made my day lol
it felt tailored to me to be honest...
-a new luigi's mansion
-animal crossing announced
-isabelle
-FINAL FANTASY
i'm happy
E3+ Smash Direct Comments:
"WHeRES ANiMAL CROSSSSING!??!!"
Sept. Direct Comments:
"They barely talked about Smash, this Direct was CRAp!
@MoonKnight7 Yeah, weirdly it was better than the E3 one.
Apparently there will be 3 new NES titles released every month. The complete line up until the end of the year is on the Nintendo site.
https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/nes/
The Direct is only okay
@Orin41 Katamari is fantastic if you haven’t played it! You’ll love it. What other game do you get to roll people and objects up in a big ball and blast them into space to make a star? It’s ridiculous, addictive, and very fun.
@Mars If I'm wrong feel free to correct me, but as I understand it devs can't opt out on PS4 or X1, which suggests that the implementation of a system by the platform holder makes it mandatory, which is just silly. Considering I've played Switch games with achievements devs clearly have the option to do it themselves, which is all I'm saying should be the way things are.
And if you find getting a bronze trophy for, I dunno, slipping on ten banana peels to be memorable, well, you do you.
I wish SLIGEACH_EIRE were here to have a total meltdown.
omg!
@PanurgeJr He's over at GoNintendo. He hasn't change a bit (and he shouldn't either!)
@maruse @PanurgeJr Lol - I also enjoy reading his comments at GoNintendo. I kind of miss his trolling here. It was entertaining to read.
Plenty of good stuff goin on here, but where in the heck is Fire Pro Wrestling World??
It was quite solid. Isabelle was exciting, Animal Crossing is very welcome, and Yoshi is looking positively wonderful! There were a few slow portions but overall it made me feel quite confident in next year's lineup.
@PanurgeJr Is their a law that Nintendo must mimic Sony or Microsoft? I don't think so. Nintendo can create their own canvas, Kirby style. And secondly, I'm not one for dumb achievements like popping 10 balloons. However, thoughtful achievements that help guide to better experiences are great.
I thought it was pretty good, over all. I'm not a fan of Final Fantasy. I tried FFVII and FFX and just didn't like them, but since is an Action RPG instead of being turn-based, I might be inclined to try that out. The rest of the FF games don't interest me in the least. I did lol pretty good at the end, though.
I thought it was darn funny when they started showing Isabelle and was like "ah, they're gonna do it. Animal Crossing for Switch." Then all of a sudden, Isabelle gets a letter and throws the mail at the screen and says "They wan't me for Smash!" then they started showing gameplay of her in Smash Bros. Ultimate! I was like "lmao, Nintendo just swerved everybody!" lol. Then they showed the actual announcement for Animal Crossing 2019.
I've never played any Animal Crossing game, but I was happy to see that Nintendo did actually announce it for 2019 for those that are fans of it.
Final fantasy was the only thing I liked in the direct At least Diablo 3 is comming.
@maruse @justin233 That's the thing. He got banned at GoNintendo too. I have no idea where he's melting down right now, and I really want to see it.
It was really average till the last section, where they dropped a lot of unannounced games
All the Final Fantasy ports, Cities Skylines, Civ VI show that the 3rd party support is looking really promising. Nintendo has missed out on basically all mainline FF games since FF VI on SNES, and are finally getting not 1, not 2, but 4 mainline games and their remasters.
Also the the Animal Crossing section was pretty funny with the double twist.
It blew my mind! I was clapping multiple times during it! And I never do that!
I already bought Cities Skylines and the pocket FF XV.
I can hardly wait for Civ VI and Katamari.
That's how you do it, Nintendo!
Let's see on my list it's Animal Crossing Daemon X Machina Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Luigi's Mansion 3
@GKO900 At this point, Nintendo is not interested in putting a lot of development resources into 3DS games. The sales of games like Metroid: Samus Returns and Warioware Gold were quite poor, and really didn’t justify all the development time put into them. That’s why you are seeing very simple ports for the remainder of the 3DS’s life, ones that use existing engines and assets or are simple copy and paste efforts. The GBA F-Zero games would need significant work to look acceptable and modern on the 3DS. Mother 3 at this point would be better served releasing on a popular console like the Switch, seeing as it is one of Nintendo‘s most requested titles. And Kirby and the Rainbow Curse would not only require quite a bit of downscaling and work to run on the 3DS, seeing as it ran on the significantly more powerful Wii U, and the clay aesthetic, which looked great due to the HD assets, would be completely lost on the 3DS with its terrible resolution. Epic Yarn was a popular game that was likely relatively easy to port. That’s the simple explanation for why you’re seeing it on 3DS.
AAAAAAAANNNNNNNIIIIIIMMMMMMALLLLLLLLLL CCCCROOOOOSSSSINNNNNNNNNNGGGHHHHHH
All it was missing was SNES games for NSO. Had more content than I expected though, so at least there’s a number of games for me to look forward to.
I could tell that the Isabelle reveal was indeed for Smash Bros from the beginning, so I wasn't trolled by it. Then I kinda figured the only reason her announcement would happen here is if a new game was being announced. I completely missed out on the emotional roller coaster everyone else had!
I'm intrigued by the Arcade Beat-em-Up collection and tabletop ports, but nothing else. I'm pretty much set for the rest of the year with what was announced before this direct.
I usually rag on Nintendo Directs. Never had one blow me away. This was by far, the best Direct I’ve ever seen hands down!!
@thesilverbrick Simple ports? Kirby’s epic yarn is a wii game I don’t port or design games but I’m pretty sure it was difficult to get that on the 3ds
Really excited about Animal Crossing.
I’m just waiting for Pikmin 4
@bignrules One look at Epic Yarn in motion will tell you that it is not a very technically demanding game. It may be a Wii game, but it’s no Xenoblade (which, oddly enough, also runs on 3DS).
A very strong Direct! A good selection of ports and some interesting new first-party content. What stole the show for me was the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle! I'm very happy to see "Armored Warriors" getting some love! If only they could handle the licensing issues with "Cadillacs & Dinosaurs" and "Alien vs Predator"...and "The Punisher"...
Not sure if I'll pick up "Epic Yarn", considering I can play it on a TV, but it's a nice option.
And more "Daemon X Machina" is always good
Honestly, I felt amazed by this Nintendo Direct. I wasn't actually expecting Final Fantasy 7, 10, 10-2, 12 HD Remastered coming out on the Nintendo Switch. But, I'm looking forward to getting Yoshi's Crafty World, Capcom Beat-em-up Bundle, Final Fantasy 7,10,10-2, 12 HD Remastered, etc. Nice one on Town game, GameFreak!
It was solid. We knew most of the Online stuff, only now they've added a super vague rewards coming soon thing. But if it's anything like what we experience with My Nintendo, my expectations are low.
The NES controllers were a nice surprise. And I'll get the Capcom bundle. At 19.99, that's a steal.
Directs are always very YMMV. This one was underwhelming for me because, of the genuine surprises brought up, I was only really interested in Town, but I understand why so many people are excited. FF coming to the Switch is also nice, though I have played all the FF games in the past and am unsure if I'll double dip on anything (maybe FF9).
ANIMAL CROSSING YES! AND LUIGIS MANSION. and then FFVII, and thats about it for me. BUT DUDE ANIMAL CROSSING
Was hoping for a new Pilotwings . Sadly wasn’t to be . I even had the tag line in my head ...... Pilotwings Switch .......Fly Anywhere !
My thoughts:
1. Nothing new revealed about Nintendo Switch Online that we didn't already know;
2. No Shantae for Smash.
3. The NES games. It already exists as the NES classic. You want NES games, go play the NES Classic.
4. No new Salmon Run stage. You dropped the ball on that, Nintendo. Give us a new Salmon Run stage or people will quit Salmon Run forever. Also open it for more than short spurts.
5. STILL relying on the Nintendo Switch app just to be able to have voice chat? Get with the times, Nintendo. We've got Discord, so why not implement that?
6. Nintendo Switch Online needs an anti-cheat service that permanently bans tryhards, hackers and autoaiming cheaters from games like Splatoon 2. Otherwise, it will kill the game like Splatoon 1.
7. No cloud saves for Splatoon 2? Shameful. Implement it and stop being so paranoid about "faked save cloud data" and "savescumming" and just make it a permanent server ban.
8. $20 just for the aforementioned NES titles (which I could, again, just plug in the NES Classic into my TV), the shoddy (again, aforementioned) cloud saves, and abysmal and what will likely be sporadic, odd discounts/special offers...? Eeeeeeh, come on, Nintendo, you can do better than that. For right now, you aren't quite winning my $20 over juuuuuust yet.
It was okay. From the whole direct the best things for me were: Luigi's Mansion 3, Isabelle in Smash, Final Fantasy Chronicles, Yoshi's Crafted World, Daemon X Machina, Katamari Damacy, Mario Party, Mega Man 11, the Splatoon 2 Update, and Capcom Beat Em Ups.
Final Fantasy and Animal Crossing are cool too but I ain't much of a fan of those franchises as much as others are (More into FF Tactics the the Crystal Chronicles series of games). Love the designs in Animal Crossing though, Isabelle too adorbs.
Got me interested in Starlink and DXM.
Capcom beat em ups, FFs, online NES games, Katamari and I'm interested to see what board games show up, hopefully Mouse Trap...
@PanurgeJr That’s both funny and disappointing. I’ll miss reading his rants.
Wait where did SLIGEACH_EIRE go, I liked that guy D:?
Luigi's Mansion 3 made me happy. After that the only two things not completely bull **** was New Super Mario Bros Deluxe and epic yarn for 3ds and both of those are ports of games I've played before and not released before 2019. People are entitled to express whatever they feel about this direct and about Nintendo. My opinion is that this direct was a little better than the E3 direct, but that still doesn't add up to anything near "good". I don't know if all this is because I'm getting older or Nintendo is getting more lazy and or obsolete when it comes to first and third party releases. All I can really say is that this direct could have made 2018 more interesting but failed to do so IMO. It.... Was.... Bad! Side note: now I have to pay to play online! How dumb are the people who made up this online service? JESUS!!!
I'm surprised they managed to keep any games secret. I'm on the every game on switch side, so will be picking up a couple of ff games. But I hope nintendo offer more games from their back catalouge, and not only nes games.
But all in all it was a strong direct.
10 out of 10 for me, honestly one of the best Nintendo Directs I've watched.
Whilst there was only a handful of games that I'll actually buy, there was so many announcements that there would have been pretty much something for everyone.
I would have preferred a New 2D Mario game but at the same time I completely understand their reasons for porting nsmbu. I quite recently played through it again on Wii U so probably won't buy it but it really is a fantastic game.
I don't think it got the attention it deserves originally due to poor Wii U sales and the fact it felt like we were bombarded with a flux of 2D Mario games in what felt like a relatively short space of time.
Despite that NSMBU was the pinicle of the "new" series
I thought it was fantastic
Contrary to the opinion that this Direct should've been their E3 Direct, I think doing one this late in the year works out in everyone's favor.
As opposed to so many of these Fall 2018 games being a 3-6 month wait if announced during E3, they're now literally WEEKS away, if not a couple of months. And the 2019 releases are that much closer.
This Direct was right on time. But my god, my poor wallet (again!)!
@MoonKnight7 Or E3 was spread out through out the year🤔
@eltomo Roll Your Dice, Move your Mice, Rinse and Repeat
@PanurgeJr For real? This must've just happened in the past 2 weeks. He fired off an essay at me for some trivial thing I can't even remember...
@PanurgeJr yeah I wish this site was as quick at getting rid of idiots as Gonintendo...
But yeah, good Direct, I've never experienced online services on other consoles (apart from free on the Wii U) and have no intention of buying a PS4 or Xbox so I have no barometer, so all the crying means zero to me. Capcom fighting bundle? Sold!!!! Liked the bait and switch with Animal Crossing too and Luigi's Mansion 3 is a big yes from me. It's definite proof that Nintendo isn't really that bothered about E3 because they fire out stuff like this all the time.
Decent start, okish middle, good finish. The majority of first party games revealed seemed to be ports, excited for animal crossing and Luigi's mansion 3 except we didn't actually see anything for either. Yoshi looked interesting though, and glad Isabelle is in smash. Switch online looks totally lackluster and offers no real incentive to those that have bought NES games 20 times since the Wii
It was the 'FINALLY' Direct. Final Fantasy back on Nintendo, Katamari, Animal Crossing. Just great games.
Luigis Mansion 3 has me excited and so does Animal Crossing, it's good to see Final Fantasy games on Switch but I already have them on PS4, the Capcom beat em up collection is a definite purchase though and they look to have a better NES range than I thought with Ninja Gaiden and the Adventures of Lolo. Overall a good direct and the best this year, certainly much better than E3 😉
Really great! Luigi's Mansion, Smash, Animal Crossing, and more! Just full of hype!
It sucked. 😢
If you were hoping for some big announcements in the form of new games for this year then you were out of luck. However if you hoped for amazing stuff for 2019 then Nintendo delivered with an amazing line up of first and 3rd party. The online was a bit of a disappointment, but will still get it.
However with Yoshi, FE, Metroid, pokemon , town , bayo 3, luigi 3 and AC I expect the rest of the first party line up will be ports. Still who cares^^
I'm super hyped for the release of some of the PS's best turn based FF games! I mean think about it, we now have basically ever mainline Final Fantasy game possible on Nintendo hardware, that's insane! And given that Nintendo already has emulators for SNES games, and the 3DS remansters, we can probably get 3, 4,5 and 6 in short order.
Final Fantasy 7 if anything is more important in a symbolic way. That was the game that should have been on a Nintendo console but was way better because it was able to leverage the disc storage on the PS one. (To put it into perspective the biggest N64 games were about 60 megs, FF7 was 3 discs if I remember each with probably around 700 megs on each disc.)
Granted there are other Final Fantasy games that are better (like 9) but still, this is a huge symbolic victory for Nintendo! I wouldn't be surprised if they make a point of ensuring that the remake of 7 has the potential to run at least somewhat on the Switch. Either way I suspect whatever comes out after 15 they're going to seriously look at ways they might be able to make it run on the Switch.
The thing to keep in mind is that the Switch's hardware is great, and with enough care put in at the outset almost any big third party game COULD be made with the Switch in mind, they might need to down res it or not use as complicated of lighting effects on the Switch, but it COULD work. I really think SE is going to start keeping the Switch in mind a lot more.
@Hams96
They announced 4 first party games with 3 for switch and one on 3ds. Had not expected a new game for 3ds besides ports so it was pretty good
@DavidMac
9 is on the list to come to switch. 8 and 13 were not mentioned yet
@Arnold-Kage I'm aware, I played it before, loved it and depending on what the price is I'm probably gonna buy it right away. (Though I said that about the X legacy collection and so far I've only bought the first original mega man collection ... I don't have enough time on my hands.)
7 is a good game. 9 is a fantastic game. Didn't play 8 but I hear it's the worst of the playstation ones. 10 and 10-2 I hear are good. 13 I forgot about, but it looks like it's a PS3 and 360 game. Switch is powerful enough to run it, so my guess is that they'll save that for 2020. (Holy crap 2020 is the year after next ... I'm so old!)
I'm baffled at how people need more information about the online service.
It's just PlayStation plus but with them opting for it to be more affordable rather than more games you don't really want.
For me, it was one of the worst Directs ever...
But I can REALLY appreciate the fact that Animal Crossing fans finally got confirmation that their franchise would be making a proper return in 2019
That, and the initial troll where Isabelle was announced as a Smash fighter was hilarious xD I immediately went from surprise to feeling incredibly bad for Animal Crossing fans - then good ol' Nook came and set things straight, which was relieving.
But yeah, absolutely zero for me in this Direct.
Was hoping for some Fire Emblem footage / info, as well as info on the Nintendo Switch Online service (what we got wasn't info, it was just another "eh yup we kinda have these features. What? More? No, that was it. We told you throughout the last year, this was it." Kinda sucks because I had a tiny hope Nintendo wouldn't pull a Nintendo for once, but of course they did. We didn't even get proper info on the member discounts, which sounds like they're gonna suck.
But overall I'd rate this Direct a 5/10, average. Simply for the fact that Animal Crossing fans (I know a few, and they cried like mad last night, the tears of happiness were bloody flowing) got confirmation of a new game, and a minor detraction for Smash content being in the Direct (I hold the opinion that we've had enough Smash content in Directs with E3's being absolutely destroyed by it, and because Smash fans got a full Smash direct after.) Would have been a 6/10 without the smash announcement.
Nothing for me, but a decently positive experience since that means I can attack my backlog with vigor instead of worrying about future titles until Fire Emblem (bar third parties which are coming in at an incredible rate - 21st of September I'm getting XBC2 Torna, Labyrinth of Refrain and Valkyria Chronicles 4 - 3 titles which will each set me back at least 40 hours, with 80+ being more likely... Labyrinth will probably be a 200+ hour ordeal.
So all in all, I'm satisfied with what didn't appear.
That being said, I definitely hope for an early spring 2019 release for Fire Emblem, though Yoshi probably gets the first release slot sadly.
Really bummed personally. And that’s coming from someone who’s favorite game of all time is Luigi’s Mansion.
@chriscare It wasn't like people needed more info, it was more like they hoped the service was "more" than Nintendo had initially told people. By repeating what they've been saying for more than half a year in this Direct, they let everybody know that nothing more needed to be said, the service was exactly what they had told people - decent for the price, bad compared to its competitors.
That, and please do tell me exactly what kind of discounts we can expect from the member discount part, as well as whether they work (stack) with actual sales... Or if they mean that we get double gold coins or whatever.
If you can give me a clear cut no-nonsense answer on that with zero speculation, I'll agree that no more info was needed - if not, well, you're wrong on that point at least
@ReaderRagfish I can confirm , it is excellent. Playing it on ps4pro currently.
@LameCube Then how the hell can you be bummed with #1 being remade for 3DS and #3 coming to Switch in 2k19? Just curious, because I can tell you that if Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword was coming to 3DS or Switch and Three Houses coming too, I'd be dying inside every single day until one or both titles had released. Simply killing myself with impatience and excitement.
Speaking of which, I already am. Every day is a painful long session of waiting for Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I literally can't wait.
@Blizzia The way discounts works is that some games.you might want sometimes get discounts. As if they were gonna go into details more than that in a 35 minute Nintendo direct that barely even about the online service . You'll see when the free trial comes out in like 6 days.
It's only 17 quid a year. I wouldn't expect the discounts to blow anyone a way.
Good direct i thought. Shame luigis mansion doesnt come packaged with 1 and 2 on switch. Happy about final fantasy town looked good and a fantastic troll at the end with animal crossing lol
I was underwhelmed with the direct. Only interested in 3 games and no DLC for Mario kart or odyssey. At least animal crossing, CAPCOM beat em ups and sonic racing were mentioned but otherwise meh.
@antivirusftw The problem with your comment is that you're writing as if you're two widely different audiences. Animal Crossing fans during E3 and smash direct were asking where the hell Animal Crossing was (understandable since they had radio silence, while Smash fans knew their game was coming), and the hive mind that is toxic Smash fans ask every single minute that they can't read something new about Smash "OMG WHERE THE HELL IS SMASH?!?!?!"
So it doesn't really work out. You should probably write it more like this:
E3+Smash direct - Animal Crossing fans:
Where is Animal Crossing, Nintendo? We've had nothing but radio silence for ages!
September Direct - Smash fans:
OmG wHeRe Is SMAAAAAASH??????????? GARBAGE DIRECT, GIVE SMAAAAASH. Isabelle announced OMG FML NOT THAT FIGHTER FML FFS GARBAGE DIRECT REEEEE
This might seem biased, but no, this is exactly how the stream chat was from these mutual sides, including reddit posts and comments on news websites where morons aren't banned within 5 seconds of posting.
Animal Crossing fans were just looking for assurance that they'd get a new game, Smash fans need Smash every single second of every single day, including every single second of each Direct... And it has to be exactly what they personally want or it is complete garbage.
There was nothing for me in this Direct, but it was pretty great. I don't particularly like or dislike Smash, and I have never touched Animal Crossing... But it was still a Direct that gave both parties something good. You didn't hear Animal Crossing fans complain about new stuff. What more do Smash fans need than knowing their game is bloody coming and constantly wasting Direct and media time being spoonfed new announcements?
I was pretty annoyed that next Kirby game is going to release on 3DS, and we're stuck with Star Allies on Switch.
If Civ 6 wasn't revealed earlier I'd be pretty stoked. That was the biggest game of the Direct for me and that one was already known.
I've not played Animal Crossing and Final Fantasy bores me...
I was disappointed, but honestly, it was unfair for Nintendo that a lot of the direct's "reveals" were revealed after the direct was rescheduled, showing us mostly stuff we already knew about.
Still, there was barely any new games! We're still stuck on the train of ported Switch games. The new games they did show were ones we already knew about (excluding Luigi's Mansion 3 and Animal Crossing.) The Nintendo Online segment told us nothing new whatsoever, so didn't really quell the fears people are having.
I wasn't expecting much and am delighted to be wrong. What a great Direct.
CONS - The Online Service still looks really unattractive to me. Ah well, I'll play Online elsewhere.
PROS - Luigis Mansion 3, Cities Skyline, Katamari, Capcom Beat-em-up Bundle, and while I'm not a big fan of AC I'm pleased it's been announced for those that are. Might even be tempted by a bit of NSMBU on the go. Yoshi looks great.
ODDITIES - NSMBU being January rather than this year. Not much push of other third-party stuff like DBZ. The Assassins Creed cloud game being Japan only.
Overall, top top stuff
@chriscare Well you know they had like 15 minutes of telling us about things we already knew, as well as 3DS titles which are obsolete anyway.
That leaves a 15 minute window where they could've taken 30 seconds to tell us about the member discounts. And they didn't HAVE to take 35 minutes. They actually took 39 with the Animal Crossing + Smash troll, so what would the problem with another minute be?
Also, your explanation was lackluster, so zero points there. It's vital to know whether the discounts are actual game discounts or stuff like double gold coins, if they stack with actual game sales, and whether they're going to be focused on third party titles, or those elusive Nintendo first party discounts.
This is all vital information for properly understanding Member Discounts. Yeah we MIGHT find out in 6 days, or we might not. They never stated the discounts were permanent either. We know absolutely nothing. It might also be an extra 5% on games already on sale. Do you know? No. Do I know? No. So we weren't informed about the feature at all. It's relatively logical to explain your features to your consumers properly.
It would be one thing if it was just a small part of the subscription, but it's listed as one of the 5 "pillars" of Nintendo Switch Online. You damn well make sure as a company that consumers know exactly what all 5 entail.
@electrolite77 At first I was also mad about the Japan-only cloud ports, but honestly, it makes sense. Their infrastructure is so much stabler than ours (when they're not being destroyed by Mother Nature), and you're close to guaranteed a decent experience when streaming a game. Meanwhile, Europe is a volatile mess of bad vs good connections and a few level 3 nodes that most ISPs use absolutely destroying stable online connections, and America is... Anywhere from stone age to futuristic steampunk level connection.
Sad as I am to say it, we'd have a TERRIBLE time playing it.
After all the hype of dlc for Mario kart 8 deluxe I'm disappointed maaan
I'm kinda down on this Direct to be honest. I mean, it was what I was expecting. No major new announcements, well except maybe LM3, but plenty of ports and smaller projects for the pipeline. Other than LM3, which is not going to happen any time soon, there was no game though, I really cared about.
Maybe DxM, but that game is also still ways off, with the E3 demo having shown the framerate dipping close to single digits. That of course is completely unacceptable in an action game. I'm sure much of that will be worked out, but that is going to take time and I'm not sure, that it will be completely resolved, as the whole thing was really extraordinarly rough for an E3 demo of a supposed 2019 release. I hope it does, I really do, but I'm simply not sure.
Nintendo Online honestly struck me as a joke. I HATED how they almost praised the service for enabling online play in "supported titles" like Splatoon 2. That really stuck in my craw. It was silly and kinda tone-deaf. Also, making a big deal out of the cloud, something every other platform has been supporting for a long time, is equally silly. $60 for two wirless NES controllers? Well, Apple just called and they want their business plan back. Speaking of which, NES games? Really? I'm sorry, I might be in the minority here, but I do not care about 99% of the NES library. I don't care about 8-bit games period, with the exception of like a handful of titles. SNES games? N64 games? Now, that would be something.
Golden Eye and Wave Race 64 and Star Fox 64 with online multiplayer? Would I pay $20 a year for that? Hell to yes I would, I would even pay $10-15 a month for that luxury. That stuff doesn't scale though. $20 a year for a few dozen NES games (eventually) is just as unattractive as these things get.
Nintendo really went back to its old self with this one. And don't get me started about their insistence on the app (has been discussed to death already though). So yeah, to me, harsh as it sounds, Nintendo Online is cheap, and the features it offers follow suit on the price. It will serve it's core function, as it has previously done, just now with the added priviledge of a pay-wall. Congratz on that. The fact that this close to launch they could not even elaborate on the "special deals" part ... I don't want to comment on that, it just speaks volumes on its own.
@Frendo Did the Direct give any indication of SNES games I might have missed? (honest question) Because, quite frankly, I do not see this happening at all. The fact, that they are selling those $60 NES controllers tells me, that this is their offering - period. I'd love N64 and SNES games, that would make the service attractive to me for sure, but I strongly feel that at this point, this is just wishful thinking. I'm not saying that it could never happen, but I would be genuinely surprised if it were to happen during the (vanilla) Switch's lifetime.
Oh yeah and final fantasy sucks in my opinion so how come all these games are coming out and 10 mins of the direct dedicated to them?
I voted Pretty good, but it was in between that and awesome. I can't wait for FF7 since I never owned a ps. The mech game looks awesome, Smash of course, and animal crossing (idk if I will get it, I just got the GC and 3ds versions this week).
Pretty much this direct was awesome, other than the online section.
@Ignatius Darn, that is the best news (besides LM3) to come out of this. How the hell did they not include that in the western Direct!? I know the developer had joined Nintendo sometime ago, and hence I really expected to happen this any time now ... it's a natural fit as well, with tate mode and all that. I friggin love Downwell, definitely going to double-dip on that one.
That should have been really part of their pitch for us well. It's one of the games I was hoping would be announced every time they aired a Nindie Direct.
@DavidMac
I only played a bit of FF7 on my cousin ps1 before he accidently dropped a hamer on the disks.
As for the rest know them ,but never played them. Still expect we see other ports next year as ff13 ,KH, mana ,bravely ,dq and tactics are games I see them porting
I was hoping to god that NES games weren't the only console we'd have access to with Switch Online. When you consider that PS4 and Xbox have access to modern games and in some cases brand new AAA releases, this is very very poor. It shouldn't matter that this is a new product from Nintendo compared to PS and Xbox, this is the competition right now. And besides, who would give a crap about 80% of those NES games if we had access to SNES, N64 and Gamecube?
Obviously they skipped FF VIII for one reason:
They will make a remaster that will launch next year Christmas,of course!!!
@DavidMac
I still curious about FF 7 on Switch.
Which version SquareEnix will use for Switch ?
Based on IOs/ Android version (With crappy 3D rendering for characters) or New remake (Not the PS4 Remake) ?
O and for them to say 'what are those speical offers? We'll announce more soon' was shambolic. Soon is NOW! They've had all this time to prepare Online and the Direct, for them to say more coming soon. What, are we going to have another Direct for that announcement too? Could have at least given us double points on all purchases in your first week or £5 off any game etc etc... F*cking soon...
I was hoping for a surprise re the online service : f zero gx online, that Star Fox F Zero type game, SNES games or anything. I’ll still buy it but my hopes were dashed.
I thought it was really strong from a first party perspective but nothing surprising from 3rd parties on the level that Doom and Skyrim were last year.
Hyped for Katamari though.
@xerador
I really hope FF VIII HD Remastered was
Not like the Steam version (With Crappy MIDI Sounds).
@Ralek85 While I'm not as down as you, I generally agree here. I personally couldn't care about older games (nes/snes/gc/n64 and so on), so it's just paying for something I'll never use. I was happy for Animal Crossing fans with the reveal of that, but I'm not a fan myself, and no other game had any interest let alone a chance of arriving soon.
Online is a joke as usual, I'll pay the fee and continue to play, because it's not worth complaining about. I got what I knew I would get. Which is nothing.
I have no flipping idea why they didn't give any information on the special deals... SUCH a missed opportunity. I mean honestly, what are we even supposed to expect? Double gold coins on purchases? Discounted third party games? Discounted elusive first parties? Does it stack with normal sales (like double discount or maybe 5-10% more discount), and are they monthly discounts that change, or just additional discounts during sales?
So many questions about that particular part, and zero answers were given. Sigh.
The main positive thing about this Direct is that I can focus on my backlog, because I've got nothing coming after November's Pokémon Let's Go games and until mid January. Meanwhile this month I've bought 7 games, October I'll be buying at least 4, and November is 2 at least (Pokémon let's go and probably Armello or Diablo 3).
What a load of bull!
Only thing worth taking from this was the Capcom battle pack.
They didn't even tell us which games will use the voice chat?
Splatoon and tennis? And that's it?
Maybe it's not what was included in the Direct, but what was missing. NEW Nintendo AAA physical games.
Super Mario Bros Wii u port will fill a gap until late Spring when we should see Yoshi. Then maybe in late May or June, I would guess after E3 we will get Fire Emblem.
Then nothing for the rest of the year unless the next E3 is better than the last.
Animal Crossing? I think Nintendo will do a Yoshi/Fire Emblem, announce early to make E3 or Directs look good and then delay AC until spring 2020. It is not a Christmas System shifter.
They had a lot to show I give them that. Now that I look back at the reveals there's only a few games that excite me. Luigi's Mansion 3 and the Animal Crossing stuff.
I'm sad that Super Mario Bros U. Deluxe is a thing... It means that we have to wait a long time until we get Super Mario Maker Switch.
It was ok, I’m not into final fantasy, but am happy for those that are.
Capcom fighters was the highlight for me. Stoked with Luigis Mansion 3, but still want the 1st on Switch. I am also happy Outrun got announced yesterday.
A really good Direct. TOWN looks really interesting. I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it.
Switch Online is still a disaster, and its segment didn’t help much but this was a fantastic Direct otherwise. A good variety of game announcements.
Honestly, the one thing I was expecting (as commented in the predictions post) that wasn’t there was a Dragon Quest release window. But all the Final Fantasies more than made up for it.
@zool
Animal Crossing is huge. It will definitely shift systems if it is a holiday 2019 game, particularly in Japan where New Leaf has sold like 5.5 million copies and is among the Top 10 best-selling game's of all time.
This was basically E4.
@Blizzia So close to the actual start of the whole thing, I would have really expect - and I think reasonably though - detailed and final information on every aspect of the service they are trying to sell me. Like I said, it kinda speaks for itself. It's not shocking or anything like it, it just seems - sadly - kinda symptomatic for the whole endeavor.
I'm also glad that Animal Crossing fans, which I am not, have something to look forward to. Mostly though, and cynical as that may sound, I am glad that we got this announcement out of the way. My Switch will not gather any dust, as there are plenty of indie games, upcoming ones and backlogged ones, that I look forward to playing and it's not like I am done with all the AAA games I've already done, but personally, I would have liked to have at least a single AAA 1st-party game to look forward to in the next three months.
I admit though, that it is kinda my fault as well, in terms of having zero interest in SSB or Pokemon. These are not games unworthy of consideration. They are just not fore me. But that is also why it is important to have substantial line-up, covering a diverse set of genres, so that everyone has something to be excited for.
I'm just glad that the Japanese Direct had Downwell and Tangledeep. Really looking forward to those two!
Lots of good stuff in there for me - will gladly play through FF7, 9, 10 and 12 again, and the Capcom fighting game collection looks brilliant. Really happy with the online service NES games too. Plus Katamari, New Super Mario Bros U (never played it so a very welcome port), Waframe...lots of good stuff.
For some reason, trying to watch the Direct on my computer kept timing out, or erroring, or something. I had to give that up and transition to my phone. I missed some stuff and the problems soured my experience a bit. Otherwise, very good! Switch Online is a joke, but, golly, no real complaints here!
... Except for my unrealistic obsession for a Castlevania collection on Switch.
@westman98 ok Japan maybe but the West, I'm not so sure.
I doubt there that many AC fans holding off buying a Switch until the games is released. Well not enough to attract non Switch gamers.
Ooh! Ooh! And I can’t wait for the Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Collection thingy! I loved The King of Dragons when I was a kid!
@Vee_Flames i don't think they know what they are yet lol.
most interesting for me was the capcom fighting game collection, but im sure my enthusiasm will be dulled when i see the RRP.. Daemon X Machina is looking like it has great potential.
I wonder if we will get a vs fighting game from capcom, they are usually fun. Tatsunoko Vs Capcom 2 for the win
It was a bit of a miss for me but that is partly due to the fact that all of the third party elements had been already announced. I do feel for Nintendo on this, they were right to hold the Direct and I fully respect them for doing so.
My main issue was all of the first party announcements bar one were platformers. Luigi's Mansion, Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, Yoshi's Crafted World and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe all look to be great games but if like me you don't enjoy platformers getting 4 announced for next year means not a lot to look forward to first party wise on the horizon after Smash.
While it is a big announcement having played through Animal Crossing on the GameCube and Wii I have no desire to play Tom Nook's indentured servitude simulator in HD.
However it was great to see such good third party support for Nintendo. Particularly Civ VI and Cities Skyline would have made this direct shine but for the fact we already knew about them. Not Nintendo's fault at all but it is unfortunate that third parties couldn't wait for the delayed direct.
The online section was exactly what was expected just a rehash of the announcements already made. None of the details that people need to make an informed choice on the service. The selection of NES games did however look excellent and great to see some that us Classic owners don't already have.
@Medic_alert Yeah it was a weird one, but boy, I don't even want to think about the size of my gaming expenses in 2019... I usually make spreadsheets for each month to keep track of my spendings (because I... spend a lot on games. A lot.), but 2019... Just wow. Coupled with Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 4, Pokémon core RPG, Town (just announced in the direct), Bayonetta 3 and Travis, not to mention a truckload of third parties I want also coming, it'll be one of the most expensive years for me...
2018 was undoubtedly the most expensive so far, but I fear 2019 may top it.
EDIT: And there's the fact that I have a weird addiction compelling me to buy all limited edition Switch consoles featuring franchises I like or support the idea of. - Safe to say Smash won't be on my shelf though.
I want more info on Metroid Prime 4; not hearing anything about it bothers me.
Isabelle in Smash? An odd addition for sure but I’m not gonna complain; I’m sure there are several other characters to be revealed in the coming months.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 was a nice surprise, definitely grabbing that one.
Nintendo Online didn’t wow me; as I expected, I’m sure it’ll be better after a few months or so. Especially if they add SNES, N64, GBA, GC titles...
Everything else was a mixed bag, some releases look fun, some had me scratching my head and others didn’t appeal to me much.
Definitely gonna put some money on the side for some of these releases but I’m in no rush to purchase them all on their respective release day. I can wait and hopefully some of these will be more entertaining than expected. I’m in no rush to gather most of these future titles, especially the online bit.
@Orwellianson I'm thinking online will be a case of nurturing a baby from birth.
We're going to start out being shat all over, then it gets better but there'll be some teething issues, then finally it begins looking pretty decent but it becomes apparent Nintendo has to learn what a subscription service even is, and we'll get the weirdest additions that nobody asked for...
And then hopefully end up with a stellar service after a few years.
My guess is year 1 of Nintendo Switch Online will suck, year 2 will be the turn-about and year 3 will be stellar.
@Ralek85 Yeah, Nintendo Switch Online turned out to be exactly what we all feared. A mess.
But oh well, we'll eventually get there, we all know Nintendo is 10 years behind everybody else when it comes to any online component.
And yeah, it's unfortunate when Directs leave you with no titles (I share that sentiment with this one), but at the very least the stream of quality third parties is growing every single day. I know for a fact I'll have no time to play anything but my august games in October, and September games will probably cover November and December... I'm so far behind, drat.
@ReaderRagfish The Dragon Quest tension is growing bigger. The only way to fix it is when they absolutely floor us with a massive announcement!
1. Dragon Quest Heroes I & II with technical improvements coming to the West announcement
2. Dragon Quest Builders 2 release
3. Dragon Quest XI footage
4. Dragon Quest VIII HD remaster (based on 3DS version)
5. Dragon Quest IX HD remaster
Something like that. I wouldn't rule it out. But it seems Nintendo + Square want to focus on Final Fantasy for now.
But I don't know, I bought most of the FF games on PSN (and iOS) already, I don't think I want to pay hundreds of Euros again...
Pretty good!
I mean, there was some awesome announcements, but most of the big stuff was for a far off future of 2019 and they were just tiny teasers. But that said, 2019 is shaping up to be amazing.
Lots of great little things too.
Why is everyone like "omg it was better than E3!"
....The September Direct has always been bigger and better than E3, since it's where they set the scene for their holiday sales.
On topic though, it was really great. Was hoping for one new third party megaton Doom & Wolfenstein last year, but with Civ and Doom Eternal on the way, and that shower of Final Fantasy, I can't complain at all.
@Aozz101x I know i CAN NOT WAIT for FF on the Switch. FF X was the game I always wanted to play but never had a PS for
One word: AMAZING!
This direct was trash. Nintendo stans are delusional.
it was pretty average until the FINAL FANTASY announcements
that made it an instant win for me
Luigi Mansion 3 and Isabelle in Smash/New Animal Crossing were the best part for me. Anything else was either ok or meh.
Also, online service still sucks. I really thought Nintendo was going to reveal something else, like some SNES games along with it.
But as it is, it's not worth it.
@chriscare the only part for me about online that was lacking is they didn't talk about that question mark block. We're days away from Switch Online launch. Then again, they've been announcing and releasing everything Switch-related at a much different pace than their past consoles. So there is that to consider...
@Mgene15 They are gonna use there last big cards in 2019 don't expect anything too big for 2020 or you gonna be disappointed, once Nintendo use SSB, Zelda, Mario 3D, Kart etc, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Metroid and Fire Emblem they don't have any other big titles to attract more buyers, and yea they have others good games like Luigi, pikmin and others but those games are not system sellers so hopefully they get more exclusive third party and not just downgrades
This was much better than E3 Nintendo presentation.
@Blizzia
Maybe but, and I admit I’m not an expert, why not let people try. Issues with ISPs and streaming quality are at the Users end. Why exclude those in big cities with good internet who could play it. The whole point of these things is the reduction in overhead for the publisher, I don’t see how (though I stand to be corrected) making it available in other regions would make any difference to that?
@Blizzia
Round of applause for that baby analogy 😀
Best Direct of the year ? Oh come on ...
I thought it was really great. I expected maybe one big announcement for most likely a big third party game , and instead we got 2 first party games , both of which I will definitely play .
I thought Town looked really cool and could be one to watch. Never been a huge FF fan but love RPG's so I will check some of those out.
Don't sleep on Diablo 3 ! Tremendous game that you will lose alot of your life to. Cannot wait for that one !
Fabulous.
LM3, Ac and T O W N; all i need
@Sebas you do know Switch Online is 0.06 c a day?
just the other day i was hoping we would get Katamari.... so happy
@electrolite77
Haha thanks, I tried my best with that analogy
And yeah, I agree, they should let people try. But we all know where the blame will be when half the users can't properly play these games, and I'm guessing that's what is holding it back. Japan has a much better chance as a whole to run them without issues, and beyond that they don't tend to complain like we do in the West, which is also why they often get a lot of titles we don't. They just play what they like and stick to themselves most of the time.
We in the West rage the moment things don't fit our agenda, and well, we can see where things have been going for a while xD
That being said, I could also imagine this being a trial period where they figure out how well it works in a country with a stellar infrastructure, and then branch out. It is, after all, easiest to work with something you're familiar with.
I could see us getting these "streamed" titles down the line in the West. Definitely.
I really think that Online was always going to disappoint.
Nintendo wants to charge us for what we have had for free up to now. That's a hard sell that the sweeteners don't help much with because they are limited offerings - only NES games at present and not all games cloud-save enabled, prominent online games among those that miss out. Cheap it may be, but you get what you pay for, or more apt for Switch Online, you pay for what you get now with little improvement to the service.
The rest of the Direct was very good. A lot of announcements, a lot of variety, well-paced. Even those who are saying it was meh, are still listing games that they are happy about. I loved the trolling of the Animal Crossing announcement.
@Blizzia Its discounts, you get money off it. It's not rocket science. They're not gonna go through what games are gonna be discounted at what rate or start droning on about gold coins that barely anyone even knows what they are. It was a quick 35 minute sales pitch on stuff, not "let's tell blizzia stuff only they specifically don't know"
Wow! That was a really good direct. Loads of games that I want to play there.
You know what i don't get. Yes we have directs and last the E3 but not everything has been announced through these platforms.
I dont base new games coming only on what is presented through E3 or Directs. I think a lot more announcements will come.
Doom Eternal for Switch was announced through a tweet.
It was pretty trash. Tons of ports, and hey, frankly, 1 or 2 are interesting. But still, literally 90% ports. By and large if I wanted those games I'd already have them.
We all knew the online would be a disappointment, but Nintendo kept teasing new details... err, like what exactly? The ability to pay more for NES controls?
So then we got 2 new actual Nintendo games- the reason we're here. Except Luigi's Mansion got no details save for a trailer that looked VERY early. Animal Crossing got absolutely nothing. Remember when Fire Emblem got a 2018 release date last year? Not happening. Remember how Metroid Prime was announced with no details over a year ago and we haven't heard back since?
So why should I be excited for 2 games we know nothing about?
Isabelle was a surprise.
Town was an interesting surprise.
Splatoon 2's update was amazing
Pokemon is... okay?
Animal Crossing announcement is cool, even if Im not interested.
The online didn't tell us anything new.
The Final Fantasy stuff was pretty cool, I guess.
But I was disappointed by lack of Arena of Valor news. Since it IS releasing this month.
All in all, I feel it could have been better, but it was a strong showing when you factor all of that in.
@BLD
Granted we got announcement about Animal Crossing for Switch, even you don't like the game.
I was Almost crying hysterically when i saw Animal Crossing logo with 2019 showed at the end of Direct. Like, Thank goodness.... we got something Great from Nintendo Switch.
And i started to shout hysterically when i saw World of Final Fantasy Maxima, FF XII The Zodiac Age, FF X/X-2 HD announced. Ports ? Who cares. As long i can play them again on Nintendo Switch instead on PS4, that's More than Enough for me.
Btw, you might disappointed due to your expectation that wasn't come true. What kind of games are you looking for Switch ?
I don't have a Switch yet, so for me, this Direct was merely okay to see. There wasn't much enticing me to take the plunge any sooner than 2019/2020 for a future hardware revision.
However, I would say the Direct was pretty good for those who already own a Switch, and even better for those who weren't very invested in the PS1/PS2 back when they were new. The contents of this Direct definitely would have generated more buzz if some of it were in the E3 Direct (especially the Final Fantasies and Animal Crossing), instead of having wasted such an ungodly amount of time on Smash Ultimate.
It's good to see the Luigi's Mansion, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Yoshi's Story series being continued, but New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is facepalm-worthy. Even the name betrays itself, what a mouthful. Many Wii U titles deserve to be brought over to Switch. Making a rehash of a rehash is pure cash grab. At least NSMB2 was literally honest about it.
Lots and lots of remasters and enhanced ports... I'm not going to get hyped in 2018 for, say, FF VII, like I was hyped for it back in 1997. But at least they're... Finally, being brought over for those who missed them, and for those who were younger or weren't born yet at the time.
That said, the one remaster/port here that I would definitely buy at some point is Crystal Chronicles Remastered. Great fun with a childhood friend back in the day on GCN, and the later DS/Wii core entries didn't do justice to the original. Hopefully the spinoff series will be renewed if the remaster sells well.
Sure enough, the Switch Online service is looking incredibly meager. It offers no real replacement for the Virtual Console, and you're forced to pay a subscription fee for peer-to-peer multiplayer matchmaking? I will pass when I eventually get a Switch. I don't need cloud saves, either- I prefer local saves and backups.
Also, excellent trolling of Smash fans with Isabelle for Smash. So many people are clamoring for Isaac, Geno, Bomberman playable instead of assist trophy, etc. and Smash fans get... an Animal Crossing side character. Love it! I'm actually feeling the salt a little bit, myself! Bomberman has been on literally every last Nintendo console since the NES, and Smash gets a newbie instead. Incredible.
@PlywoodStick
You know, i was quite mad when i saw Isabelle announced as Playable Smash Bros characters. I mean, Come On..... ! Smash Bros again ?!
But, my disappointment suddenly changed when i saw Tom Nook sitting on his office chair and explained something. I was thinking, "Is it Animal Crossing for Switch ? Is it ? Is it ?!"
And when i saw the logo of Animal Crossing with 2019 , i was screaming aloud, almost crying. Thank goodness, Nintendo is listening us.
Let's get the negatives out of the way first.
First: super, super, super bummed about Super Mario Maker getting the shaft in favour of yet another cash grab with the NSMB series. The addition of certain features is good and all, and the fact they chose the absolute best entry the NSMB series makes the announcement barely salvageable, but that's not saying much. I'd be more positive about this if, akin to releasing Super Mario Land before its ten-times-better sequel on 3DS, I knew Nintendo was willing to rerelease Maker on Switch, only merely later; but if Luigi being playable in single player on NSMBU's main campaign is some sort of threshold, then what chances could such a "break glass in case of emergency" game as Super Mario Maker have? It took the Wii U selling like crap to turn a "maybe" into a reality.
The other bummer is that we still know little about some Nintendo Switch Online details - the clarity didn't increase much yesterday - and the minor, minor, minor nitpick about Isabelle not being that much of a crowd-pleaser in Smash. Hopefully we'll get a better announcement next month.
That's about it for the negatives. The positives, though? Hoo boy!
Aside from all the good stuff we got, can we mention the complete, utter U-turn that was Square-Enix's lineup? Because man, I was completely expecting Square to save the best for PlayStation, but the ice seems to be finally melting. The somber tone the Direct narrator was listing the titles with kind of lampshaded this. At first I merely thought the "Final Fantasy is coming to Switch, kupo!" was Nintendo blowing a single spinoff out of proportion like they usually do, but I've never been happier to be wrong. Final Fantasy VII being on Switch (okay, Xbox One too) isn't merely a late rerelease, but a message - and a strong one at that - signaling the Final FantaSony era is over, to the delight of all JRPG fans all over the world regardless of the console they own. And with Switch being portable, it's like the PSP digital rerelase of the PSOne versions of the games... but better.
Oh, also, X and XII on the go, in HD. Just felt like pointing this out.
What else? Let's see...
For one, even though that particular Kirby game isn't my cup of tea (currently having a blast with His Shortness, Kirby Star Allies, and its character-selection-y subgames are a good way to wait for Smash Ultimate), I'm glad the 3DS is getting some love in the form of Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. Many swan songs for a handheld (not to mention the dual screen era as a whole) that gave us so much. Thank you, 3DS.
Also, Town. Artistically-wise, it seems a step in the good direction - if some of its style bleeds into the next real Pokémon games, then late 2019 can't come soon enough.
The streaming-only Assassin's Creed Odyssey news aren't necessarily great news, but show a willingness on Ubisoft's part to stay committed to the Switch way more than they did in the Wii U era. (At this point I doubt the Rayman Legends wound will eventually even heal...)
Yoshi's Crafted World looks stunning already and if the delay is put to good use, it's a day-one purchase. Period.
Also another former Sony exclusive, Katamari Damacy came out of nowhere and I'm not complaining, even just for the mere platform-change alone.
And that's... that's about it, yeah!
I love Nintendo from the bottom of my heart but I spent the first 25 mins of the Direct commuting to work and waiting for that ‘wow’ moment. All I got was stuff I have known about or expected. I love indies and will play almost any game if it gets high enough reviews.
Saying that though, I loved Zelda BoTW and Xenoblade 2 to me is a Masterpiece.
Odyssey... got 800 moons and waited for the moment to catch me but never did like Supermarioworld or Mario Bros 3.
I have high expectations I know but I’m tired of the substandard games being released and worse still ports of games which was the entire Direct today. It hurt but It was lazy
@Anti-Matter I have to admit, that was actually a pretty brilliant setup! I think we all knew deep down that Animal Crossing was coming at some point for Switch, it was just a question of when.
other than the online "service" and a very meh Smash announcement, it was pretty good. Solid B+ effort
@ReaderRagfish If the major mainline 3D Final Fantasies can come to Switch, I won't even rule out Dragon Quest or even Kingdom Hearts!
About what was revealed:
1) Capcom beat them ups got me really hyped!! Day one for me!
2) Luigi's Mansion was a surprise. A welcome one!
3) the NES joy cons are insanely nice but super expensive. That's a no for me
4) Yoshi looks pretty beautiful and it's good to have a release date
5) New super Mario U. Not a surprise but I'm happy it's coming soon. Day one depending on the price. I expect no more than 39.99
6) nintendo switch online. Nothing new but I didn't have any high Hope's. That's it for 20 bucks and it's reasonable
7) FF7 was a shock. Such a perfection of a game!!!
About what was not revealed:
No news about Metroid? Really?
I don't care what anyone else says, but I loved the announcement of FFVII, IX, X/X-2 and XII way more than the Animal Crossing or Luigi's Mansion 3 teasers!
@MasterGraveheart YES!!!!! I am so excited to have actual AAA Square Enix games... even if they are old. I am excited to dig into FF XII
@Anti-Matter
"Animal Crossing for Switch, even you don't like the game."
Huh? I freaking adore Animal Crossing. As I adore Metroid Prime and FE. But how am I supposed to be excited for a white screen with a vague release date that is very likely not even accurate?
I’m personally blown away by the direct. So many good announcements. I’m even excited for the online service (but I’ve always been).
See, my whole thing is I don’t play online games on any other system. I don’t even play switch online. So I have nothing to compare to. For me this is a great thing “I get to play online and get NES games!”
True I already have these NES games and have bought them tons of other times (most of them) but it’ll be cool to play on Switch.
It got me thinking... what if they enabled some kind of Amiibo functionality for the NES games? Scan in some power ups or something...
Anyway, I’m most excited for Animal Crossing, Daemon X Machina, Starlink, Cities Skylines, Luigi’s Mansion games, Diablo (!), Kirby, Yoshi, and Final Fantasy! Holy crap Final Fantasy finally. I legit almost got brought to tears when they revealed Animal
crossing. I miss those characters so much.
There were some awesome surprises! I’m so excited about all these announcements. I’m really really looking forward to Starlink as my next purchase. It might as well just be a Starfox game! I can’t imagine not playing as the Arwing.
I cancelled my Mega Man preorder after the demo because I felt it just kind of felt like a mega Man game. Weird yes because that’s actually a good thing. But I just felt it’s also not different enough. I wish it was another X series game; I want to be able to add armor that changes my appearance and be able to duck and roll and dodge. It seems like they are still following programming hurdles from yesteryear even with the ability to overcome that now. It’d be cool if they made a Metroidvania style mega Man. I’m not dissing the game I’m just stating my expectations; it plays good and is fun I’m just not taking the bait this go-round.
Here’s to a great next few months everyone!
The Luigi's Mansion 3 teaser was nice, but there's too little information to get excited about. Other than that, the news was neither exciting or was stuff we already knew about. We get to pay for the same old Final Fantasy games again. Yay? People are acting like this somehow signals the end of the "Sony / SE era", choosing to forget that Square has been consistently releasing their games on both PC, Sony, Nintendo and even Microsoft systems for decades. Even the NintendoLife articles are wrong in stating that up until now Final Fantasy VII has remained a Sony exclusive. Guys, FFVII was released on PC in 1998. It was a Sony exclusive for about a year. It's even available on iOS and Android.
It does make me sort of happy that SE has decided NOT to port FFVIII though, which sort of feels like they're admitting that it was a dumpster fire of a game.
And the whole deal with the online service is getting more and more embarrassing to be honest.
I'm a bit of an Animal Crossing fan, so I liked that announcement. However, so far, the games released in the series have all been extremely similar. If this Switch version is going to be too similar to New Leaf, I can't imagine I'd want to play the Switch version over the 3DS version, because the 3DS version is infinitely more portable.
@zool
Animal Crossing isn't as big in the West as it is in Japan, but it is still big. It will do attracting a more female-oriented audience that currently isn't really on board the Switch.
All the Final Fantasy and Animal Crossing! I will certainly rebuy FFIX for like... The 9th time. Plus Chocobos Dungeon was one of my favorite Wii games. If you like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and FF, then there's no reason to skip it
I guess if you live in a bubble and have not owned a Wii U or own any other console, then this announcement is great. Me? I owned a Switch, I own a PS4 Pro an a gaming PC. Apart from Luigis Mansion 2, nothing interest me.
Pretty amazing they were able to keep (most of) this stuff a secret until the Direct, even after it was delayed a week. I loved the Final Fantasy announcement and the NES Joycon, and it was good to get an update on Yoshi.
@westman98 most if not all NL reviewers are male and they play AC long after the review.
@zool
Most if not all people are not NL reviewers.
best direct ever.
final fantasy, luigi's mansion 3, new game freak rpg.
yoshi is looking very very good.
although i dont like animal crossing, it's a big deal to get.
2019 will be the best year yet for the switch.
Thoughts -
I don't really care much about NSMBU. Where is Super Mario Maker?
I sure hope FFVII, IX and X also have the fast-forward feature of FFXII. I just played through all of FFVI on an emulator and the ability to fast-forward through random battles is a godsend. It's not the way the games were intended to be played, but then, random encounters in almost any RPG is a bit of a design flaw IMO, and this fixes that up to some extent. It would be especially nice for FFIX. I never finished that game because the original had a terrible load time just to start any encounter, as I recall.
Regardless, I don't really need any of these FF's; what I really want is Final Fantasy Tactics! Or better yet, a brand new sequel.
@westman98 and I'm not sure, without evidence, that it is mostly females that play Animal Crossing.

When I just focus on facts and I see 20 PORTS on the same Direct, it's just no for me...
I respect the people who think that it's great but me, no I can't applause on that...
Ow, and where are the "famous unannounced Nintendo games for 2018" ?
Do you remember that we got :
_a Metroid Prime 4 teaser, since then, silence.
_a Bayonetta 3 teaser, since then, silence.
_a From Software unknown kind of horror game, since then, silence.
So, yeah I'm really disappointed because the reality is that if you are a newcomer in the wonderful world of video games,
yeah, a lot of games of that list are knew for you but for somebody like me it's just hell on earth.
I already played the majority of these games... I never experienced so much ports in a so short period.
I feel like my Switch is not a new system at all, but basically a retrogaming handheld.
@zool
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/01/08/satoru-iwata-on-animal-crossing-sales-56-of-players-are-female/
Still waiting for the N64 mini and Fzero
They really had me at the beginning with LM3 and KEEY, but I got apathetic toward the announcements as they went on. The Smash reveal was disappointing in my eyes. I was crossing my fingers for a new DK Country or Wario Land (Virtual Boy Wario Land remake for the 3DS someday?), but I guess those didn't happen.
@Blizzia Obviously I’m glad to revisit the first game on 3DS, but the new game just looks incredibly disappointing to me. I’m just going off of what I saw in the Direct. It shot my hype down.
@Blizzia I was just pointing out how there are always complaints no matter what Nintendo announces. They could release brand new games for their top 20 franchises in a 6-month span and there would still be people disappointed that their personal favorite didn't get a mention. That's just how it goes, unfortunately. (And AC is my favorite franchise, I was among those complaining, lol)
So many good games!! I was beginning to think it was Wii U all over again with just a few titles a year around Christmas with a decently big title for the summer. Now I'm overwhelmed with games I want! Luckily they're spaced out between now into the next year..
@ReaderRagfish I think next week at TGS we'll get DQ11 news and more.
Everything was awesome! 🎶🎶
@westman98 56% of AC players are female.Ok but I bet females play Mario games, Zelda games, Tennis, party etc, so they will already have a Switch.
It take a very special game to sell a console. Last year it was Mario Odyssey. Animal Crossing won't sell the Switch in any great numbers. In didn't on the Wii u
Guess I was hoping for a completely new entry in the New Super Mario Bros. series really, I'm starting to get really fed up of the Wii U ports now.
Some really good new games announced though and can't believe we're getting all the final fantasy games. Spyro would have been the icing on an already delicious cake.
I'm so hyped for luigis mansion 3! It was my prime 4 or animal crossing!
@zool
No other major Nintendo franchise has that large of a percentage of female players.
And did you seriously just compare this new 2019 Animal Crossing game to Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival?? Come on now...
And the Switch isn't a Wii U.
@LameCube Well you barely saw 10 seconds, so it isn't much to go off Maybe better to wait till you see proper footage to get shot down
@antivirusftw Well yeah, people are idiots :3 Bet we're gonna have complaints about the 2019 line-up despite it being one of the most legendary line-ups ever already.
@chriscare
Yeah, again, you're just talking out of your ass. Everybody bloody knows gold coins if they've purchased a game, you literally get it every time you purchase, both digitally and physically.
And once more, do you know anything about the member discounts? No. You don't. So it's not stuff they only I specifically don't know. Nobody knows. Because we haven't been informed about it. It's one of their "5 pillars of Nintendo Switch Online", so it needs to be fleshed out.
@Cobalt I 100% agree with you. I bought a Switch to play new games. I do not mind a REMAKE now and then like Resident Evil Remake or Shadow of the Colossus. However what we saw on that Direct is just a bunch of really old titles. I was watching some youtubers reaction to the direct. I was in awe seeing them excited because of the Capcom Beat Them Up collection or Katamari Damacy. I did not buy my Switch for that. The tabletop games was the cream of the crop for me. Last week there was a Humble Bundle selling all of those games for around $10. They are just shovel ware. While typing this I am thinking that maybe Nintendo's strategy is not beating Sony and Microsoft. Their strategy is beating Valve. Little by little Nintendo's platform is being filled with games that you can buy on Steam. If we add the fact that Nintendo can renovate their console every 2 years (they are planning to launch a more powerful Switch next year) in three more years we will have a really powerful machine that can play games like a PS4 Pro. Maybe by then there will be more Switches on the market and developers will make more third party games for it.
@Primarina Without any kind of disrespect, I think you don't get the point at all...
@Primarina
If you scroll down, you'll get the idea... it starts at #49 and you're gonna get the full "story" until the end. ^^

Luigi's Mansion 3, Katamari Damacy Re-Roll, and the many different Final Fantasy games were the highlight of the presentation for me. Yoshi looked really cute as well.
it was absolutely amazing!!! I am so hyped, I want so many games and I have already a backlog of games. Ninety rocks big time, this time <3
@Primarina
And I understand your position too you know.
The only difference that we have is basically the way we see the consequences, that's all...
I'm convinced there are at least 10/15 years difference between you and me and I would probably think like you if I was younger.
But, as an old guy and developer too, I'm doubting more and more about the future of gaming if it continues like that.
Ports are not a bad thing when it gives the opportunity to the younger generations to discover old games but when ports are a replacement to new titles, then it becomes dangerous.
We opened the pandora's box some years ago and the results are indisputable now, ports, remakes, remasters, DLCs, lootboxes, microtransactions, day one patches etc...etc...
I play video games since 1980, gosh almost 40 years of gaming ^^, and I experienced in real time the launches of all the systems that gamers consider as retro ( even older than the NES ) and I can tell you that the evolution is fascinating in terms of technicality but step by step we are losing the essential when it's about to create video game, .............the creativity in itself.
@Blizzia Honestly mate, your deluded if you think everybody knows about nintedos coin system. Go buy I pre owned game, odds are you'll be able to collect the points off it cos the previous owner won't have had a clue. Not every switch owner and Nintendo direct watcher is a massive fanboy
@chriscare Honestly, if you don't know the coin system while having a Switch, it's not about being a fanboy or not. It's about lack of intelligence. Any bloody rational human being would consider possible discounts. It's a discount system, people are going to make sure they can take advantage of discounts.
Not doing that is just stupid. I'm not a massive sony fanboy, yet I still made sure to research Sony's way of discounting things as well as how beneficial their "member's discounts" were.
I mean sure if you've got unlimited money I see the point, but otherwise, not checking out discount systems is just ridiculously stupid.
@Blizzia They won't even know it's there, you've got to sign up on a website on another device, you've got to go into a menu you need to look for to claim the points, and the amount you get for physical purchases anyway is so miniscule people aren't going to actively look for it.
good
@ReaderRagfish yes they did. I think we'll get news of Ace Attorney as well during TGS. Hopefully more new game surprises.
@zool
“Animal Crossing won't sell the Switch in any great numbers. In didn't on the Wii u”
Nothing would have sold the Wii U. It was a bad idea. And it didn’t get an AC game, it got a fanbase trolling, Amiibo hawking board game. That’s not a great comparison.
Not being able to keep the NES games, and accumulate them like you can add monthly games to a PSN account, totally sucks. Screw Nintendo if they don't backtrack like Microsoft did in 2013!
I am very happy to hear that Katamari is coming to Switch, and it won't be controlled by Nintendo online like their super crappy NES games will be! Animal Crossing and Luigi's Mansion 3 should be fun. I'm also enjoying the FF 15 pocket edition even though it doesn't run at a perfect 60 fps
Not that impressed to be honest.I did expect more especially from the online service. I'm sold on FF and Capcom's classic bundle though.
I hope they'll come up with more than 3 Nes games per month..Killing the emulation scene ? Yeah it's their right after all but they'd better understand that "piracy" offers a better and more intuitive service in the end which is crazy when you think about it...And i'm not solely talking about it being obviously free.
Don't get me wrong I'd gladly pay but they did nothing after all, are they gonna do something convincing now ?
i missing pokemon colosseum from gamecube,
A great direct, bookended with the two great reveals of Luigis Mansion 3 and Animal Crossing. 2019 looks promising....
@electrolite77 Super Mario Bros Wii u sold 5,000,000.
In the Direct there were a lot of interesting games, for me anyways, announced. I like the look of Luigi's Mansion and some of the Final Fantasies games and the availability of some old NES games I did not have. I am also looking forward to some of the ports including Diablo. In fact there were so many games given a quick mention I began to become irritated. I really think they should have reduced the amount of content and left some of the deeper looks at 2019 out. In fact here are four things that I really felt went wrong with it:
1) There was far too much crammed into the direct.
2)Not enough time spent on the bigger games.
3) The voice app, for me, is non starter. I do not want to use my phone when it can be implemented through the Switch. My guess is they cannot resolve the resource issue through the servers while playing games simultaneously.
4)No mention of Battletoads. Until Battletoads is available I am staging sit down
It was a fantastic Direct let down by Nintendo Switch Online being bad.
@chriscare You don't need to sign up on another device or any such stupidity... Pop the game in, press +, "My Nintendo Rewards Programme" (something which would pique someone's interest) and "Earn Points". Boom.
There's nothing special needing to be done. Nothing external on other devices. At all.
@zool
Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival was a poorly rated (46 on Metacritic!) party game spin-off released on Nintendo's worst-selling console. So of course the game flopped hard.
The better comparison would be Animal Crossing New Leaf, which was a critical acclaimed (88 on Metacritic) mainline entry released on a successful platform. That game has sold nearly 12 million copies.
Expect Animal Crossing 2019 to sell close to if not more than 15 million copies, given the Switch's success and the immense growth in first party Nintendo software sales on the platform.
@westman98 but that was 12 million from total ds sales of almost 80 million. The Switch sales are only about 15 million so not a good comparison
@zool
Animal Crossing New Leaf was released back in late 2012 in Japan and summer 2013 in the west. Back then, the total 3DS install base was well below 35 million.
Animal Crossing on Switch will likely be released in the 2nd half of 2019, when the Switch install base will be anywhere from 35 to 50 million.
And install base size isn't really a limiting factor anymore once the numbers are this high. For example, Breath of the Wild has handily outsold Twilight Princess and Mario Odyssey is <2 million away from outselling Mario Galaxy after just 9 months, even though the Wii has a 100 million unit install base vs 20 million for the Switch.
The only thing that will prevent Animal Crossing 2019 from selling 10+ million is if it is an outright terrible game ala Amiibo Festival.
@westman98 my original comment was that Animal Crossing is unlikely to get a Christmas release because it's not a console selling game, not that it won't sell well. As you said, in 2019 Switch total sales could be up to 35 million, and AC sales could be similar to New Leaf.
But, a lot of New Leaf games were given away free by Nintendo, I got one, so that would have been counted as sales. I bet they don't give Switch AC away for free.
@zool
Any game that sells 10+ million copies is a console-selling game.
And I can guarantee you that New Leaf was never "given away for free."
But I could see Nintendo releasing Animal Crossing in the summer if it's ready and if they think a 2019 holiday without Animal Crossing is strong enough.
@westman98 we are just guessing about release dates, but I think AC was announced for 2019 more to promote Smash Bros. My feeling is it will be a Spring 2020 release (unless it's a New Leaf port).
Nintendo have a habit of putting dates on games in progress and then pushing the release date back six months later. As they did with Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Starfox (Wii u) and others I can't recall at the moment.
And yes my AC new leaf was a free download from Nintendo. I am not an AC fan but Nintendo offered a choice of, I think four games and AC new leaf was the only one I didn't have so I downloaded it.
I can't remember why it was free, but I think it was to compensate those who paid full price for their 3ds and then Nintendo lowered the 3ds price because there were to many complaints about it being over priced. But yes it was free.
@Blizzia ya give me a wee bit o’ hope with that.
