A surprise announcement came during today's Nintendo Direct where Game Freak, world-renowned for their development of the main series Pokémon titles, revealed Town, a new RPG coming to Nintendo Switch in 2019.
Set entirely in a small village under rule of a castle, this new RPG explores the aftermath of invading monsters within the village's borders. Incorporating a JRPG style battle-system with various commands, players will battle monsters and call upon villagers for extra assistance in battle.
Although Town is still a working title, this unique RPG will release on Nintendo Switch in 2019. Let us know if you're excited for this new RPG adventure from the Pokemon development team!

A bit of a weird one. Weird is good though.
Looks somewhat intriguing. At the same time saw so little
I'm definitely interested, outside of Pokemon, Game Freak have produced some good titles, Drill Dozer in particular was fantastic.
Ehhh, doesn't look like anything I haven't seen before. You know, for a company who is known for Pokemon, you would think they would make a game where you play as "monsters".
Will be giving this one a pass.
Cautiously optimistic.
I was very surprised to see this, but as a New IP, it has my attention. Just... wish they'd have at least given us some more information.
Me and my girlfriend watched the stream on Italian Youtuber Cydonia's channel - a primarily Pokémon-oriented one - and nodded when the host had these words to share: "If [the actual 2019 game of] Pokémon is going to look like this, I think the situation is improving".
While none of Town (tentative title) looks mind-blowing so far, I'm willing to admit that yes, it's already an improvement over some of the more barebones parts of Let's Go's art style. Next year, we're in for a real treat.
I will be keeping an eye out for this lol
This is going to be a buy for me, most likely.
I'm so glad to see Game Freak branching out with a brand new title.
Count me in, for sure.
I expect next years Pokemon entry to look like a larger-scale "Pokemon-ized" version of this game.
One of the best surprises in the Direct. I thought this one was great!
@AlexSora89 idk, personally I like the art style less. But there’s still time for my mind to change.
It's depressing that this game has better visuals than the $60 Pokemon we're getting this year.
I’m hoping they try some stuff out I this game. I’d love to see them move Pokemon in a more actio. RPG manner. (Which is funny since I normally prefer turn based more.) I think it would make more sense given the trainer/monster dynamic. Instead of having direct control over your Pokemon you’d be commanding it and it could ignore you or something.
Anyway game looks like it could be good. If I like what else I see I’ll totally buy.
This looks... interesting. The art style might be a bit uninspired, but for a game that's called still called just "town"... well, it clearly is unfinished.
Looks pretty interesting but hopefully it's one big town....
I'm keeping my fingers crossed but the synopsis they gave of the game wasn't exactly enticing. Set in a peaceful village until one day when monsters emerged. Something that totally hasn't been done a thousand times before. I'll definitely keep an eye on it though because it's nice to see a new IP.
Looks like a worse Monster Hunter Stories in terms of art style. Game freak being behind it gives me little confidence.
This was a surprise nobody was expecting. Seriously why is 2019 so amazing right now
Interesting. Can't wait to hear more!
@Toadie @JaxonH Gamefreak makes some great games when they're allowed off the poke-leash every now and then. Drill dozer, pocket card jockey, and harmo knight are some of my favorites
@ShadJV
This seems more akin to Yo-Kai Watch art-wise, which means we're going to get more expressive characters in the next generation. Or at least that's loosely what I think.
Can't be mad at a new IP
Game Freak, you made that elephant game a few years ago. You got your non-Pokemon game of the decade.
But when will we get a SmartBall sequel?
Always nice to see a developer known for one franchise try something new.
Oh, wow !
Looked interesting.
This game looked pretty generic imo, nothing from the trailer interested me.
I thought this one looked delightfully pleasant. I'm excited to learn and see more in the future.
It'll probably be better than LGPE at least
Looks cute. I'm into the idea of having it all set in one town, curious to see how they'll keep it interesting given that.
Color me cautiously optimistic. Game Freak has definitely proved their talent at making other games besides Pokemon. Plot details, on the other hand...eh.....
I love that it's a brand new IP, Nintendo could always use more of those. Better yet, I'm in love with the visual style. It seems a bit reminiscent of Ni No Kuni, which is a very, very good thing. And if the snippet of combat we got in the trailer is any indication, then it should be mechanically sound as well. The narrative might not seem too enticing yet, but if the characters are as charming as they look then I don't think we have much to worry about!
Since Harmo Knight, I expected another good game developed by Game Freak (of course, in addition to Pokemon), and apparently, this game shows good expectations, I will have to wait for more information.
@KingMike
I also expect a sequel to Smart Ball / Jelly Boy (name in japan), but since Jelly Boy 2 was canceled when the game was really almost completed, and all for the start of Nintendo vs Sony (Playstation); Well, the question is, if Sony really took that franchise in the future, since Jelly Boy / Smart Ball is owned by Sony.
It's a shame, Jelly boy 2 is really very good (yes, there are a ROM of that game)
@AlexSora89 I strongly dislike Yokai Watch so that doesn’t really make me feel better. I don’t want expressive characters in my Pokémon, I want HD ‘mons that are more “realistic” (how about scales on Charizard) and don’t care much about trainers being expressive (outfits are one thing, but I’m not playing Pokémon for the avatars).
Once again, maybe this game will be interesting to me, too early to know for sure, but I’d be thoroughly disappointed if Pokémon went anywhere vaguely in the direction of YW.
I love the looks of it. Reminds me a little of the general artstyle of Level 5 games.
To me it immediately felt like a mixture of Fantasy Life and Yokai Watch and that really floats my boat.
It's funny how people moan about there being too many old games rematstered on the Switch and then when a brand new IP is announced as an exclusive there are far fewer comments than in articles about sequels and remasters.
Personally I'm hyper for any new RPG IP. Look forward to getting more details on this one.
Not particularly interested in this one, I would've preferred another James Turner directed title like Rhythm Hunter Harmoknight or Tembo the Badass Elephant.
@BionicDodo Yeah, people are funny. For me, this was the most eye-catching announcement of the whole Direct. New RPG, new IP, nice art style, and I love the idea of the whole game being set inside one large town full of hidden secrets. Colour me interested.
Yeah, I'm intrigued. But more importantly...this NiNoKuni-esque style is what Pokemon 2019 should look like. Please, don't mess it up GameFreak.
This game! So epic and beautiful! Man i can't wait for this one.
rpg hell yeah!
those graphics tho really stunning, if this already looks this nice, im holding my breath for the main pokemon game, with Ash in it maybe? Lol just kidding. But yeah this game definitely in my library.
Very curious to see where this goes!
Need to see more
I need to see a lot more. This wasn't a proper trailer. Hope it'll be a lot of fun.
I need to see more but as an rpg-fan, I will buy it for sure!
@BionicDodo maybe because they don’t look good.
@ShadJV
But I merely meant art-wise.
The gameplay is - sorry, but you served me the following snark on a silver platter - ruined already enough as-is in LGP and LGE.
The graphics are nice. I can't say more at the moment.
