When it was revealed developer Retro Studios wasn't working on Metroid Prime 4 (it had, after all, made the previous three) we were left wondering what the Texas-based outfit would do next - apart from handling the Switch port of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, that is. Well, one hot rumour suggests it's been secretly tinkering away on a new Star Fox title, but with a twist you definitely aren't expecting.
The rumour - which was posted by Reddit user DasVergeben on the Star Fox subreddit - says the dev is building a spin-off more akin to F-Zero than a traditional Star Fox title - one purportedly called Star Fox: Grand Prix. Here's the full post below:
"What Retro Studios is working on is a spinoff based on an existing Nintendo IP that they haven't worked with before.... Star Fox.
It is actually a racing game. Something like Diddy Kong Racing mixed with F-Zero essentially. But more like F-Zero gameplay. It will have a adventure mode of some kind (think Diddy Kong Racing) and there will be some boss fights and a hub world like it too.
It is called Star Fox Grand Prix."
Take this one with a big pinch of salt. With E3 less than a month away, this is when rumours go into overdrive, especially those with big Nintendo licenses attached. However, considering how the Star Fox licence has struggled to match the high points of yesterday, a new direction might just be what the franchise needs.
Share your thoughts below on this interesting rumour and whether you think Fox and co will be taking their Arwings to the track instead?

This would be such a nice reveal, finally the Fzero will get some love.
I really hope not! Hope they're doing something original of their own. I don't feel like I need a SF racer.
Not to mention it sounds made up.
Embraces for angry comments
Two birds, one stone. GIMME!
While I’d prefer traditional Diddy Kong racing, Fzero, and Star Fox titles, a combination of the 3 is better than nothing. Especially if it’s good
Could be intriguing.
Could be a Fire Emblem Lustrous Daybreak.
I would definitely play this
This was one of the endings to Star For Command.
I hate all the rumours leading up to E3. Most of them are complete nonsense and a waste of time and the ones that are true end up just ruining the reveal somewhat. It's so much more exciting when a surprise announcement comes out of nowhere.
What the ....?
@RupeeClock Wow, nicely spotted ending.
I would like to see a tsunami of Games for the switch. Big reveals that will blow everyone away.
Would rather just a normal Star Fox game on Switch, leaving out the gimmicks.
I hope this isn’t true.
I’m personally hoping for a port of star fox zero that eliminates the need for motion control aiming and makes it an option. I’ll be so happy.
While it's not what I would want in a Star Fox game, I'd still probably play it.
Meh, I'll stick with MK8 Deluxe, thank you.
Would buy
I was going to say ludicrous but @RuppeClock made this a long shot.
I cannot say it's a horrible idea but I think it would make more sense to make Star Fox an open world space game. Make it the the space faring adventurer.
I bet their making Star Fox adventures Hd
I want a new Starfox Adventure game! Loved it on gamecube
Tropical Freeze sequel would be much better. Star Fox needs a normal game that takes place between Assault and Command, not a racing spinoff.
This sounds too strange to be true, even for Nintendo.
Firstly, this is a horrible idea. Secondly, it contradicts the job listing and resumes that have been popping up over the past couple of years.
No, just no!
Give us a proper F-Zero and a new Star Fox without the stupid control system from the last one and we are go to go.
I'd rather have a Star Fox closer to Rogue Squadron........or an F-Zero game, but I'm not against this. It could be really good.
Sounds good to me. The track list basically writes itself as well as the roster of racers to choose from!
Diddy Kong Racing was easily one of the best N64 games. FZero GX was easily one of the best gamecube games. Would love to see another super polished Nintendo racer with boss/battle elements at the speed of FZero.
Exactly, tourjeff said it ....
I love both games
We havent got a decent star fox successor since SNES and F-Zero is a classic that needs revitalization
I think IF a hybrid was done, they should at the very least include a Classic mode, even if its limited in comparison to their dream vision, somehow or someway, they cant just fuse these without including a classic/standalone mode
@chrislisting See Mario Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Diddy Kong Racing, etc etc etc
I need star Fox Zero multiplayer!
An intense battle racer is a good fit for the series, especially if you know the lore behind it and the weird connection Star Fox has with F-Zero. I'm all about this.
Just don't botch the controls again, Nintendo.
Does this guy have some sort of credibility or has the site’s standards really fallen this low?
Does this Reddit poster have any prior form with insider rumours?
@tourjeff YES. JUST GIVE US A NEW PROPER F-ZERO! Mixing genres worked so well with Federation Force after all. The Switch is the perfect platform to move ALL of their main IP's forward just like Metroid 4 etc...
Looking forward to checking this comment section later.
What @Discipledoctor said
Say what now??
Interesting if true. I'm always open to anything.
@RupeeClock Star fox headlining a F-zero game makes sense - love it - star fox in a random racing title - not so much.
I love diddy kong racing so im on board with elements from that.
This sounds like just the kind of crazy project a fan would come up with. I love DKR, Star Fox and F-Zero, but I seriously doubt this could happen. Can't say I wouldn't buy it though!
I would love this to be true, but also keep secretly hoping Star Fox Zero (and Star Fox Guard) get re-released on Switch with regular control options.
This does make me even more excited for E3 though!
Fox do a barrel roll!!!... Never mind.
@Discipledoctor "Does this guy have some sort of credibility or has the site’s standards really fallen this low?"
That's a solid NO and a YES. In that order.
Picking up the local tabloid will give you as much insight into Nintendo as reading this drivel.
@getyourak I dont follow...what do you mean by see Mario Rabbids?
IF you mean they are good examples of fusing two great games, you are totally right. Mario + Rabbids is the biggest surprise I’ve had with a video game, because I didn’t know what to expect, and now its my most played game ATM
Please elaborate
Sounds like a bizarre mash up but it’s retro so I’d be confident it would be good especially I they have been taking this long on it. Probably not true though
I severely doubt the rumor, but it would make some sense to me. It would give us an F-Zero like game, which Nintendo has abandoned for quite some time now, but with characters that more people actually care about. I've always loved the F-Zero titles, but my guess is a similarly styled game with beloved Nintendo characters would do much better.
EDIT: @Mr_Pepperami That's actually what's more interesting to me. I doubt this rumor, and they haven't been working on Metroid - so what the heck have they been up to all this time?
What would be nice would be if the rumour turned out to be half true, that Retro was working on both a new Starfox AND a new F-Zero! They're one developer who I believe could work wonders with resurrecting both franchises, the right way!
This reminds me of that same Star Fox/Metroid crossover rumour a while ago.
In other words, a cock and bull story.
taking this with a huge grain of salt.
DasVergeben has been wrong with some of his claims before on Nintendo and other stuff (saying a Metroid Prime 4 trailer was happening in January of this year in a Direct. when it didn't, Devil May Cry reveal during the Playstation Experience, when it didn't, etc source: https://www.reddit.com/r/Kappa/comments/7c9n8i/leakileaks/)
but, it's Liam that is claiming something about to be shown
https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/994278549006815238
i'm mixed on some claims that Liam said (he been right sometimes and wrong sometimes.)
if this is real, i need to see more before my final thoughts.
@Samwise7 Yeah, why don't they just do that right?
I mean, don't get me wrong, if true, this game might be good but, when you have Diddy Race, FZero and Star Fox IPs that didn't have a game in a long time (minus Star Fox), why not bring them back?
I'd also would love to see Diddy Kong Race again, that perhaps would take over (over time) Mario Kart 8 until Nintendo brings a Mario Kart 9...
I just think they should revive some franchises and not try to reinvent the wheel.
i feel like this is more inline with something nintendo internally would do, not let their most expensive studio work on it.
in terms of investment vs returns this may not pan out well and doest seem like nintendo would do as its higher risk than other games.
but you never know
I mean, I guess that could work. But it has been so long since we have had a new Star Fox that was done really well, I'd kinda hope we get one of those, before getting a spin off. Why turn Star Fox into a racer when F-Zero has been begging for a new entry for years?
@chrislisting You can't look at it as a fan. No way they would include a classic mode. You're asking for two games in one. Which economically doesn't make sense. The cost to produce two games in one and charge a normal price wouldn't result in a profit - something Nintendo won't do.
And honestly, Star Fox games have been horrible for a long time. Diddy Kong Boss battles honestly weren't far off from an on rails shooter experience you would get in a Star Fox game. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the best Star Fox game period when it comes out - hybrid or not. (Just remember what people said about Metroid when Retro made it a 3D FPS)
With Mario kart already out, this is a good logical way to get another racing game to the switch.
I call this feasible.
@BenAV See Mario + Rabbids for recent example
This could be incredible, although i would just prefer either a new F-Zero of an X HD remake.
This is the second Retro/Star Fox rumor I've heard this month but it's completely different in its description of the game. I think it's Retro themselves spreading lies.
Be kind of wild of true. A good kind of wild as it could scratch that F-Zero itch.
Don't know why's everyone so pissed off: this sounds awesome!
Sounds terrible, but Nintendo have a knack for making great games that sound awful on paper.
I'm one of those suckers who will buy anything and everything Star Fox and enjoy it, so I'd give it a go. Personally I'd rather have Star Fox Adventures 2 but I know that was probably the second least popular game in the series (second only to Zero) so I'll settle for a racing game.
Well, on the one hand this makes perfect sense as another instance of Nintendo having no clue whatsoever as to what to do with the Star Fox IP, hence their willingness to try just about anything imagineable. On the other hand though, more than four years (assuming there was no project that had to scrapped beforehand) is a long time to spend on a Star Fox themed F-Zero game, that then has to compete against Mario Kart, to name just the most obvious one. Retro has not released a game since 2014, meaning that this game (again, if nothing went wrong inbetween) is in - at the very least - preproduction since 2013/4.
I'd almost be impressed if Nintendo had decided to dedicate one of their most valueable development ressources to a F-Zero-related game for roughly half a decade. I'd definitely be more than just a bit surprised ... Oo
This sounds like a weird idea that could work extremely well if executed probably and with Retro Studios being behind it, there's a good chance it could work well. I know most Nintendo fans will despise it and not give it a chance due to it being a spin-off and think we've all established just how much they detest spin-offs but I'm going to give if it a chance to impress me if this rumour does turn out to be real.
Wake me up, when E3 ends....
This rumor has that Mario + Rabbids level of weirdness to it. I think this has a very likely chance of being real.
Might be real, might be fake.
Alls I know is every single game Retro Studios makes is a masterpiece.
So if it is real, I say bring it. I know it would be absolutely incredible.
@BanjoPickles Too logical. They've spent the last 4 years porting Tropical Freeze.
Just give us actual F-Zero.
So... Last week some "leaks" were talking about an open-world Star Fox "Adventures", now it's a racing game.
A new "open-world" SF Adventures could be awesome... but after the failure that was Star Fox Zero, I really doubt Nintendo would invest so much in a game like this.
Space could be the main hub. With space battles, bosses, small asteroids and stations to explore, lots planets to visit, civilisations to discover, etc. Basically Breath of the Will but with space battles. I would love this. >> Won't happen.
As for the Star Fox racing game... I would just ask : why? Why not a new F-Zero then? It's not like the Star Fox licence will help the game to sell more, not after SF Zero. Both licenses are quite dead right now, but at least F-Zero ended on an high note... F-Zero GX/AX is still considered as an awesome game.
Anyway, these are just the usual pre-E3 fake leaks. Hopefully, Retro Studios big project will finally get revealed, whatever that is (beside a new Donkey Kong).
I doubt this, but I trust Retro Studios.
If true, color me hyped. I can't tell you how much I missed racing games like DKR, with boss "fights" and a world that gradually opens up.
I hope not
Cool.
You know, being an actual Nintendo character, I'm really surprised that Fox never got into Mario Kart.
Though I would prefer a brand new F-Zero entry and a brand new Star Fox entry I would welcome such a mash-up, it actually sounds like it could work really well. Plus, when has Retro let us down!!!!!!
I really hope this is fake
@getyourak I must admit, I didn’t see any relative way of viewing your perspective by that initial post...however, now that you’ve explained more, you’ve made a lot of sense
Perhaps, if I may extend, that is if you didn’t already have this included, it may be better for Ubisoft to do a hybrid so that they can “elevate” the game on their own/in their own way, as seen with Mario+Rabbids
See, I thought the post was being comical or facetious, but now i see its just succinct Well said
@LUIGITORNADO what if it's Kirby Air Ride good
not saying KIR was a f-zero type game, though.
You know what this game needs James McCloud from F-Zero lol
That sounds awesome
@Winklebottom nothing will be as good as Kirby Air Ride. That games oozes charm and I don’t even like Jirby games that much
So rather than listen to their fans who have been begging for a new F-Zero since the Wii era, Nintendo is just going to make another futuristic racing game by shoving Star Fox characters into an F-Zero style game?
First Mario Kart 8 and now a random racing game starring Fox.
Geez Nintendo, do you sustain yourself on the salty tears of F-Zero fanboys?
If true at all, I'd bet it is a new F-Zero... with Star Fox stuff added in.
@RupeeClock
I'm glad someone else remembers
Although F-Zero and Star Fox worlds would fit nicely together in a new racing game. (Probably could add Samus too)
oh hell no im hoping for an actual star fox and f-zero eventually
@BenAV stay away from the internet untill E3 lol thats what ima do starting today.
I absolutely love the Star Fox IP, Argonaut’s first entry using Jez San’s FX chip still remains close to my heart, next to Lylat Wars.
I’m not impressed if this turns out to be the next step with the IP. Zero was close to being great and could have been a superb arcade shooter without the hammed in control method.
Just give us a Star Fox game akin to the puppet shows like Thunderbirds or Stingray, from where it was based.
Super Play’s front cover of the original promotion got it spot on.
Here’s hoping sone sort of Star Fox announcement gets made.
Gotta be honest, I'll be pretty disappointed if that's what's taking them so long to make.
LOL this guy is not credible at all. He’s been wrong before...
Hmmm even though i like the sound of this and really want Starfox to become a more popular franchise i'm not convinced this is true, all reports in the last few years have said Retro are working on a story-driven game, why would they have employed a story-writer who worked on Uncharted just for a racing game ?
There's always the possibility they've been working on two games all these years though, they are a large studio after all, they also helped out on Mario Kart 7 so who knows ?.....
@gloom im not the only one! yay!
(im sure other people don't believe it either. but, if it is. i still stand on what i said earlier.)
I would buy this instantly.
Weren't Retro working on a horror/adventure game?
So you mean to tell me that RetroStudios, a studio of immense talent, hired the Deux Ex composer and an award winning writer to produce a racing spin off in the Star Fox universe?
@nhSnork One of the more amusing comments in this thread. Sadly, most people will miss the punch line...
@RupeeClock That's some pretty decent detective work right there.
There is no way they used 4 years on a game like this.
First, I hope they have not spent 4 years or so working on a port and a spin off that we don’t want. The new star fox game is awesome and the formula doesn’t need to change. Multiplayer/co-op would be nice, but we don’t need a star fox: fzero game. We just need a true fzero one.
And any haters on star fox Wii U can only knock the motion controls. Which I personally love. But admittedly I would have like it to have the option for old school controls too. Hopefully the switch version will have both.
E3 for switch needs to be big if Nintendo wants to keep this momentum.
Crazy enough to be true! Looks like Wizpig is back to take over Lylat hahaha
Oh god no! Just give us a decent starfox or f-Zero but not some crappy spin off!
I think it's real. The source in the article doesn't really have any credibility. However, some of the stuff Liam has posted recently appears to have been reading this. Emily also asked people on Twitter right around GOW's release how they'd feel if Retro took an established IP and released it in a new genre. Now Eurogamer has backed up this rumor with their own sources.
Please don't be real.
Why not a rogue-like game similar to Starfox 64? It would make every playthrough unique, especially since the game is pretty arcadey.
Okay, this would be pretty dang cool
F Zero on the gamecube was handled by a 3rd party. And if this is a lot like F-Zero with starfox racing cars in it i be all over it!.
Cue everyone saying that this is stupid, they don't want it, and that it's going to be garbage, alá Mario + Rabbids. Because in all our infinite knowledge, we know which game will be fighting for 3s and 4s from looking at that crystal ball we found a week ago near that one shady spot at the garbage bin; all in the comfort of our own armchairs. Must be exciting!
Personally, I am very intrigued. As long as the game is nothing like Command, then bring it on.... that's assuming the rumor is true, anyway.
That would be AWESOME! A new concept for Star Fox. Also I'm one of the few who actually liked S.F. Zero.
Annnnnd now I just realized that one of the "endings" for Command is something about Fox joining a supersonic racing league or something like that.
Command wasn't really a good SF game, so I hope the connections between it and the racing game (again, that's if it even exists) end there. No weird grandkids characters. No brokenhearted Fox. None of that weird stuff, please.
I'm always up for more Star Fox.
No. Do an F-zero and Starfox separately. I want a flying Starfox. I feel like I’m the only one who kind of liked the control scheme in Starfox Zero. It had a hard learning curve, but once you got used to it it worked. But given how unpopular it was, and the fact that you can’t play Switch split screen, we would probably get more traditional controls for it. Please, just be a flight game, not a racer.
This is a great idea. Please be true. Nope, no sarcasm.
@Whalehome
That's a nice idea. Could work.
It seems the last thing Nintendo wants to greenlight at this point is another F-Zero game.
Don't they realize that the only game the StarFox ""fans"" want is StarFox 64?
(I, myself, am open to change, however, and I'll give this one a go if it turns out good.)
I've heard that Retro was working on an existing Nintendo IP in a new genre. So this "rumor" isn't that shocking to me lol.
Interested in seeing if this is real or not, and if its real, what it actually looks like.
I have to say, that adventure mode sounds like what a normal StarFox game would be.
"But I thought Retro was working on the Tropical Freeze Switch port for the last 4 years..."
Star Fox is a 3D Shmup at it's heart, I really wish Nintendo would just call up Factor 5 and ask them to do something with the franchise. Just pull a Mario franchise trick and make each game exist in it's own reality, then change the story to ragtag freedom fighters, bounty hunters, or space racers. Whatever is necessary to breathe fresh air into the franchise and move away from retreading the same story that was in Star Fox, Star Fox 2, Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Zero.
A racing game?? I hope its more than that
I hope not... I would rather have a proper Star Fox! I really want a Rogue Squadron, but that's not going to happen.
Star Fox never gets old. Unless he physically does and someone writes a splendid FanFic about this, as happened here https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12835041/1/Darken-Legacy
Yet no F-Zero.
The mind boggles.
But, if done as well as the excellent Diddy Kong Racing--this could be very special imo.
Hmmmm, personally I'm not sure about this one. I'd prefer a pure F-Zero over this - that's if it is indeed true.
I would be perfectly happy if this turns out to be the case. Star Fox lends itself well to futuristic racing gameplay like F-Zero, and the mentions of gameplay similarities to the legendary title Diddy Kong Racing adds undeniable promise, as Diddy Kong is an all-time racing great and one of the most beloved games from one of the most beloved developers of all time.
Impressive as this rumour is, I can't help but wonder "Is that the best they can do?" however, as it has been nearly a decade since the last arguably "good" Star Fox game in StarFox Assault (I'm sure SF Zero is good, but the difficult controls unfortunately must be considered).
I'm hoping to see a more ambitious StarFox title along the lines of StarFox Adventures, which is to-date the best, most sculpted and polished Star Fox entry. Though some devout followers of the series may view them as weaknesses foreign to what comprises a good StarFox game, it is for that reason exactly that elements like the rich, lived-in open world and great Zelda-like puzzle elements in the game enhance and expand the Star Fox universe in ways more traditional entries have not, making Star Fox Adventures a truly unique standout title in the franchise, and one that would be done a great justice with a new entry given today's age of reinvention and outside-the-box "what can we do differently" thinking in the development of new titles in long-time Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon for Nintendo Switch!
Use the boost to get through!!!!!
I doubt it but hey, it doesn't sound like a bad thing to me. We'll just have to wait and see.
If this means arwing like section go for it. Hated those lame non-arwing flight section so much...
I could see it being like this: The racing aspect could be inspired by the Star Wars' stories of the Kessel Run (not sure if I spelled that right) while the hub world could let the characters get out of their ships and walk around and interact with each other.
I'll be honest, I don't like Star Fox as a space combat game because the characters are completely loopy and I like my space combat serious.
As for F-Zero, yes, the games are amazing but I have zero attachment to the characters. But the world of F-Zero racing is, well, completely loopy.
Put them together, and you could potentially havw one of the best games on Switch.
Not gonma bet any money on whether this pans out or not, but I for one LOVE the idea.
That would be cool . . . but source seems suspect. "It is called Star Fox Grand Prix" seems way too direct. More credible if the quote was, "the working title is" or "the project is referred to internally as" . . . .
I'm in the small camp that actually enjoyed Star Fox Zero. I want to see a new Star Fox and if there's any studio that can revive the franchise, it's Retro. I'll wait to see if this turns out looking good (or if it even happens at all)
It'd be nice, but we need a new F-Zero first...
Ugh just give us F-Zero. No gimmicks, spin-offs or cross-overs.
I want F-Zero RPG
&
and a serious openworld Star Fox game!
..it is „i want“-day, isn’t it?
Not saying if I think the rumour is true or false, but I do think Nintendo are better served letting their first party studios work on their existing franchises, just like they did with Ubisoft and the "Mario rabbids" title.
Having Retro work on a ultra realistic shooter, which of course would sit well with many posters on here, would be another game that would just not sell all that well.
Everything RETRO Studios touches turns to gold, so I'm not worried, whatever it turns out to be.
A StarFox racer would be interesting imo. But I doubt this is true.
Big if true. I put my money on Retro, Nintendo, crazy ideas. Let's go!
The concept on paper sounds interesting, but also like another "small project" amidst many small projects. Surely that's not what Retro was doing for the past 5+ years. Unless retro really hasn't been working on anything for 5+ years at all and has just been pitching in with the dozens of other smaller games. Nintendo's small games are great, but they really do need to do something about their "big" game output.
@NEStalgia,
I am also in the camp of "It sounds interesting",but of course would have to see more at E3.
As for the "Big" game output,I am pretty sure Nintendo have that covered as well.
I'd be all over this. Please be real.
Seems weird given when Zero came out.
After Mario vs Rabbids, I'm going to be more open minded on thepotential for this, than normal...but I'd really prefer a modern F-Zero.
Preferably one just a liiiittle bit easier than the gamecube version.
Star Fox X F-Zero
If this is true.....oh geeze.
by the way Star Fox Zero remains my favorite Star Fox. I swear they made that game for me and me alone.
I bet it's an F-Zero X remake where all the characters come from the Star Fox universe. Why?
Because F-Zero X can be written F-0-X and this looks like the word 'fox' and Fox is a fox in the game Star Fox which is about foxes and stars.
I don't actually believe this
In related news:
Miyamoto has insisted that this is exclusive to Wii U and has insisted that it was a weird control scheme and has insisted that it also be dual screen only.
And Miyamoto additionally insists that this is the only way to have fun with this game.
i really hope this is a sequel to star fox command where fox and falco modify their Arwings and join the G-zERO GP
Would be so stoked if this was true! Diddy Kong Racing + F Zero + Starfox = Win.
It’s just a rumor. No one should automatically assume this is true until we know for sure at E3. I’m sick of seeing people complain about rumors that are not confirmed, especially when they’re baseless.
Sounds more interesting than yet another SF64 remake at least
@Maxz And then you find out that all of the characters from F-0-X are all former members of the FOX unit who have had their brains removed and installed within Neural Operating Nanite Sensory Enhancement and Navigational Situational Enhancement project. Old Boss has been using N.O.N.S.E.N.S.E to control Fox, Peppy, and Slippy as puppets all along, but ultimately it was Liquid who was posing as Snake but was really Ocelot that was actually Past Snake from the future who was actually Star Wolf who is really just future Fox, all along.
It's all so clear to me now!!
if this is real im not buying off of principle that they would do Fzero so dirty like that.
@johnvboy
Yeah, I think a lot of people are disappointed that Retro isn't Nintendo's Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, or Guerilla Games i.e. they aren't making cinematic story-focused action games or shooters.
Have I missed a press event or reveal? It is impossible to say it will be a bad game without knowing what the game is about. Sure, it's racing, but how? In space? Racing through Asteroids or first one to Corneria is different enough to Mario Kart. I'll wait for the reveal, because it could be a real curve ball and catch us off guard. (Or it might be a Federation Force lol.) We don't know. So put down the pitch forks.
@NEStalgia This is why video games need fans. To improve upon the source material.
@westman98 I also think to a lot of people that aren't really racing fans, any racing game is just a "small" fluff game that isn't really a full sized real game. it's like fighting games. All the work is in those micro-details that most players don't notice, but there's not much "meat" on the game. I like MK as much as the next person but also, as a non racing enthusiast, it's just a handful of maps and some karts. Spin around all of them a handful of times and you've really seen all there is to see. Same with fighting games. It's a collection of a few stage and some characters, but once you've done the tournament a few times, you've kind of exhausted the content.
Of course to a hardcore fan there's countless hours of perfection, honing, tuning, tweaking, mastering the subtle differences, making advantages of them, etc, etc.
Of course to me MK and Forza are basically the same thing.... Can you spot the difference?
@westman98,
If Retro was making games for the Ps4 or Xbox one then they would be no doubt making those types of games, and to be honest I would love an ultra realistic open world type of game from them, but I am pretty sure it will be an awesome game no matter what they end up making.
@johnvboy I do wonder why everyone is so convinced that retro is such an amazing studio. They have the MP trilogy under their belt, but key leadership has left the studio since that time, so it can't be factored in too heavily. Other than that all they have in their current form is the two DKC games, which while excellent top shelf platforms, don't give indications this is a studio really aligned with big open story based games. They do seem to be largely used for helping out on other projects these days. It's not that they don't have excellent talent there, but they don't really have that much of a library under their belts either. We know they were part of MK7, the 2 DKCR/DKCTF. MP was a long time ago with different leadership. DKCTF proves they can do quality....but...even that was long ago now. And it seems clear they had a development nightmare going on in the WiiU era that was presumably scrapped.
I just can't help but think that they're not the "big 1st party independent studio" people imagine from the MP days, and instead, a supplemental unit of R&D1/2 or whatever they're calling those these days.
Good Lord. You don't kill off a fanbase which hasn't seen a proper mainline game in years by sending out a half baked spinoff looks at Metroid Federation Force oh wait...
@Yasaal
Metoid Samus Returns and Prime 4 exist, so...
@Alto me too it’s a great game star fox zero it just won’t allow you to play it , hate the motion controls
What the Fox's Tail is this madness?!
@Yasaal I love that you already know it’s a “half-baked” spin-off. It’s truly intriguing!
but Why?????? idc as long as Animal crossing is announced
I love the fact a rumour which has no real grounds in reality at this moment in time is getting so much condemnation.
Wait until there's actual proof, then start crying.
Well... I thought Mario+Rabbids was a joke so, I'll be quiet till E3.
Sounds made up - combine two undernourished franchises fans are gagging for...
But I really hope retro are working on a straight-up F-zero game
And here I thought that a new Star Fox Steel Diver game was being made.
@boop22 we all want Animal Crossing (not amiibo festival) Game.
@Aozz101x pikmin looks more likely than AC, which i dont really like
@NEStalgia
Apparently, according to Kotaku, Retro has been working on 2 projects for quite some time:
> One of those projects is this game, StarFox Grand Prix (or whatever the heck it's actually named)
> The other project went through a rocky development cycle and may have been canceled
It would explain why it took 4 years for any meaningful information about this game to surface. Retro has certainly been busy...
I am 100% ok with this, it actually sounds like an amazing idea, MK doesn't have to be the only racing game developed by Nintendo for Nintendo platforms!
@westman98 busy, maybe. But this and a game that went bad isn't that good a record. Still, i think they've mostly been pulled off for other projects.... Much like monolith.
Last time we had Star Fox Zero. Now we'll get Star Fox F-Zero?
If true, no doubt it'll be pretty solid with Retro leading the charge. And ultimately, this might be an ideal way to bridge the gap between F:Zero and Star Fox, depending on how the story goes down.
Also, this is a nitpick, but "Star Fox: Lylat Grand Prix (or GP)" would be a far better name than simply "Star Fox: Grand Prix".
@WiltonRoots it's too bizarre to not be legit, though. I'd be shocked silly if it turned out false. Then again they've been working on diddy Kong racing for 4 years if we trust e3 rumors...
@NEStalgia
The only outside game that Retro helped work on was Mario Kart 7. And that was ~7 years ago, years before the original DKC Tropical Freeze was released.
If Kotaku is to be believed, Retro spent the last ~4 years doing 3 things:
> Developing this StarFox racing game
> Developing another project which went through a rocky development cycle and may have been canceled
> Porting DKC Tropical Freeze to the Switch
Sounds like a believable turn of events over the last 4 years for Retro Studios.
@Vee_Flames Ikr. Exactly what Nintendo envisioned for Federation Force!
As we were taught with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, don't judge it until you have seen it.
I'll buy it.
@JaxxDuffer this isnt about your comment, but im appreciating the love to Fear and Loathing with that pfp
If it’s fake, congrats on a great mash up idea. If not, I’d be petty excited. Star Fox and Diddy Kong Racing fan here. It’s interesting that there would be potential for shooting and different scenarios not just straight racing... also it really should cross over with F-Zero.
@aaronsullivan Pretty much already happened, with James McCloud in F-Zero series and Octoman in Star Fox Command.
I would much rather a bounty hunter game as Captain Falcon with F-zero races thrown in.
Sounds... interesting... sort of.
What I'm really hoping for is that they are working on a new Kid Icarus game. I don't want Nintendo forgetting Kid Icarus for twenty years like they did last time.
@BanjoPickles Now that I could deal with. If this rumor is wholly true, Nintendo ditching a perfectly good futuristic racing game franchise to make a futuristic racing game with STAR FOX, I will actually smash something. Now, if they were to make both games and separately, those are an insta-buy for me. I like both of them a lot.
It would be just a little ironic if they've taken this long to make a racing game.
I love how people think because this title is a racing game, it couldn't have possibly taken ~4 years to make.
I know Microsoft churns out a Forza game every year (and EA used to churn out a Need for Speed game every year - now they do it every two years) , but that doesn't mean every racing game is produced that quickly, especially one that will likely involve space flight and aerial combat in the friggin StarFox universe.
That's not to mention that there have been rumors of Retro working on other project(s) alongside this one.
Well, more Rumours in RumourLand!!, XD
For me, this sound really very interesting, but, well, it is something that I would like to see in action, but, if this is real, in this E3 we will see it.
I think it sounds awesome
yes!! imagine that Star Fox Grand Prix will be Mario Kart in the air something like a cute version of Wipeout cannot wait!!! i love the buggy genre i mean kart racing
@BenAV well though you didnt get a surprise announncement, you got a surprise leak instead
Star Fox + F Zero = WipeOut?
With Retro having worked on Mario Kart 7 it wouldn't be too surprising if they were working on a racer now.
@westman98 Turn 10 Studios released 3 Forza in 7 years, so its not every year.
As for Forza Horizon, its made by Playground and gets no help from Turn 10.
Playground used 3 years to make Forza Horizon 3 due to all the huge upgrades to the game engine too.
Forza Horizon 3 is the Skyrim of racing games, and there is no way Starfox Racing is this huge and meaty. Nintendo make much simpler racing games. Not even Mario Kart 8 required that long dev time.
When it comes to Starfox as a brand, Nintendo want the gameplay kid friendly so it won't have much advanced features.
I think that they might be planning an F-Zero game with Star Fox characters...
EDIT: I wrote this before reading the text and now I see I was quite right. LOL
An adventure like Star Fox Adventures with a hub like awesome Diddy Kong Racing and Star Fox ships flying and hovering could make a great game if done properly.
Why not make Diddy Kong Racing 2???
@WiltonRoots Well, what NLife forgot to post/didn't mention, is that this rumor actually does show a couple of logos, and we all know what happened with the whole Metroid Prime Federation Force rumor, or the Mario + Rabbids one...
Maybe James McCloud from F-Zero could be a playable character?
