Metroid Prime 4 is coming. No, really - it was just confirmed during Nintendo's E3 presentation.
Nothing was shown beyond a logo, with statement saying it was currently in development for Nintendo Switch.
It has been confirmed that Retro Studios isn't developing this new game. Producer Kensuke Tanabe has stated that he's leading “a talented new development team." Tanabe acted as producer on the first three Prime games.
So if Retro isn't working on Metroid Prime 4, what is it working on? The studio has been silent since the launch of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

What is this franchise? I've never heard of it?
I'm a bit disappointed they didn't show anything about it. I'm not sure what to really expect, but it's nice to know it's coming.
Yes! This is a great reason to own a switch!
Mhmmm, just casually dropping bombs like that. Good ole Nintendo.
I literally will be okay if nothing else is announced after this.
They shoot... they score!
Nintendo just won E3.
@Fbigabig
It's this cult classic that was one of those hidden gems on the Gamecube (one was even released for the Wii) It's a sort of reboot of one of Nintendo's other, much older franchises. They got a lot of details faithful to the original, like how the protagonist, Metroid, cannot crawl.
Not going to lie, I teared up a little bit.
I'm speechless. HYPE!
@FX102A You got heard.
As long as they are not taking notes from federation Force
I think I need to change my pyjama bottoms.
This is all it took for a successful e3
This.
People have been begging for this game for so many years...
All is forgiven.
This literally changes everything for me.
I bet Boidoh is messing their pants and crying tears right now.
Can't wait!
The only good thing about the E3 along with the xenoblade 2 part, IMO.
Was a bit disappointed overall :/
Gods be praised
I'm so glad it was announced, but I need to see what this iteration will Be like. Even though I know this is probably be 2019
I kept saying that it was on the way... seems I was right.
That's all I need. Thank you.
What a glorious announcement. Most here won't even remember Metroid Prime 3, such is the lack of games knowledge in youngsters at the moment. Hope this one introduces them and gets them to go back through the Trilogy.
That was the sound of Nintendo winning E3.
This is years away from release.
Why is Nintendo adding a 4 to new IP title, it's confusing!
No gameplay........................................................... th-thanks nintendo
Well if they couldn't put together a trailer in 3 years, this might take a while!
Thank GOODNESS, just letting us know that things are happening is enough.
Can't help but get really excited. Now I'm ready to purchase a Switch!
Tbh, I'm surprised they actually delivered. It was beginning to feel like Mother 3.
When I saw the stars and outer space on screen, I thought "Metroid?" Then I heard the music...Oh my gosh.
HYPE!
On a side note, I wouldn't assume it's by Retro until they say so, especially since it seems to somewhat early in development.
Best news of 2017. I hope it follows the atmospheric isolation of the first game, rather than the dodgy acting of the third game. Hopefully it releases in 2018
I guess they don't look down on that series after all.
Nice line up
HEAVY BREATHING ❤️
Awesome but the bad news is it must be a long way away if they have only a logo to show for it!
Awesome sauce. Now just give us MP Trilogy HD to hold us over in the meantime
@SmaMan The Prime series wasn't a reboot. The original trilogy, including Hunters for the DS, took place between Zero Mission and Return of Samus.
YES! Been crying out for this kind of announcement from Nintendo for years. Doesn't matter if it's 3 years out and not ready to show, just knowing it's coming makes me way more excited about the switch that being able to see tired Kirby and Yoshi games.
THIS!
You don't always have to show gameplay, this was more about the fact that new Metroid is coming and hype is real.
of course i missed it
OMG Nintendo just won E3. I mean metroid and a core pokemon game are coming to the switch. Still wonder what reveals will happen in the threehouse
Damn I was excited...but i want that gameplay...development means two years out 1 year if we are lucky.
fast heartbeat
AND WITH THAT, E3 HAS BEEN WON, MY FRIENDS
Awesome this game is coming but, still disappointed by the spotlight. I was expecting to see something huge or gameplay of Metroid. Oh well, another meh E3.
E3 has beens won.
@SmaMan I think you mean, "the protagonist, Samus Aran" Let's not continue that misconception.
Honestly, I dunno what I'm hyped for more, Xenoblade 2, or this. All the jokes can go away now. The two biggest "reveals", this and a mainline pokemon game on switch came and went so fast.
Also, this comment has taken ages to write... Too many other hyped people around. XD
They won E3.
F**ck me Sideways and call me Charlie
Nintendo Just won this E3
My god... Amazing how just a graphic can make you pee your pants.
THIS IS ALL I WANTED, THANK YOU NINTENDO!!!
(To be honest I wasn't expecting at all for anything Metroid to appear at this E3, but Nintendo delivers!)
So 2019 then? Or are Switch owners ucky and it will be out by end of 2018.
Yeah, it's great, but do they have nothing more than a logo to show? Maybe they do. But if they don't then when will the game be released? 2019, if we're lucky?
And what have retro been doing for the last 4 years?
Pretty sure it's been in development for a few years already, so I'm sure they could show us some footage if they wanted to... they're probably just holding it back to do a big reveal later in the year (probably a dedicated direct) in order to release mid-late 2018, with it to be the big title for next year's E3.
Nintendo WON E3!!!
Along with the mention of a Pokemon rpg for switch. Good E3 in my opinion.
By that time, I should have a switch.
No gameplay or any real details revealed yet my hype jumped well past the max with the reveal.
I look forward to seeing a 30 second trailer next E3 with a release date of 2019!
So....2022 release date?? It seems there is always at least one game announced at a consoles first official E3 that gets put through development purgatory and sometimes never sees the light of day. I hope this is not it, but the whole, "hey, we've got a logo but no game" isn't promising. My only hope is it comes out on the switch and not its successor, lol.
Maybe they will show more of it in treehouse? I can dream right?
That's good news.
called it!
After they announced the core Pokemon coming I was already on the edge of my seat. Then I saw that logo and heard that music...seriously, after that they could just filled the rest of the presentation monkeys flinging poo at one another and I would have been fine with that, lol.
OH MY GAAAAARD
@TheXReturns @sp_initiate-001

They will show it or at the end or a Nintendo direct after
Good move from Nintendo. Good E3!
...wha..Metriod 4!?..

..that's great!...perfect!
Nintendo just won E3 with nothing more than a logo lol
Nothing but a logo......
and already 10x more hype than the rest of this thing combined!!
for me, totally makes up for the massive disappointment of BG&E2.
Metroid Prime 4 hype!
With just an extended logo reveal Nintendo wins E3.
Would buy Trilogy again(!) in HD in the mean time Nintendo
Announcements with zero pictures or footage is indicative of a long development cycle ahead so I'm thinking 2019 at the earliest. Outside the "Holy crap it's coming," there's not much to build hype as it's a year at the earliest before we see any footage.
Maybe I'm just hard to please but this is akin to a name drop and nothing more.
@SmaMan The amount of times I've heard it referred to as "Oh, right, it's that old shooty thing with the Metroid guy in it" by friends makes me cringe.
@Koudai1979 Yes they did!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy right now!
Metroid Prime 4! No footage so for all we know this one doesn't have Samus in it either!
Can't believe they dropped this and a Switch Pokemon with no images or trailers or anything. So... anticlimactic.
Metroid Prime 4!!! Thank the maker! Metroid finally in HD! YES!!!
I started crying when I saw this appear on the screen, I was that happy.
I will buy a Switch the same day this comes out.
@AyanamiReign If it's Retro Studios, we should have faith that they will do us right.
I think Nintendo just announcing the game is in developement is fine. At least we know it's coming and it will give the developers plenty of time to make sure the game is maximized for performance on the switch's new hardware. Switch owners have a new game every month this year so far, including Xenoblade, which some thought would be delayed. The only thing I didn't get out of the spotlight that I really wanted was the announcement for Monster Hunter XX localization and vc/netflix/web browser - which I'm fine waiting for both given what's in the pipeline, as long as they eventually come.
Well, time to go eat my words then.
!!!
Sweet, this means I can safely wait until 2019 to buy a switch!
Best announcement of the direct by far. It can come out in 2025 and I would still wait. Looks like I will need a Switch by 2018.
Metroid: Zero
MissionFootage.My most hyped game... with no actual footage.
I'll admit it, I screamed and shouted. Yep, neighbors probably heard me!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Metroid: One-Hundred Confirmation.
This alone makes this the best Nintendo E3 in years.
Last year they won E3 with a single game.
This year a single logo.
Next year, they may as well stay in bed and just shout F-Zero outta the window.
@Spoony_Tech Same. It was for a worthy cause, no shame.
Please god add a 3rd person perspective to this and I'm sold. Shouldn't be that hard
@Fbigabig It is a spin-off to federation force.
This is years away...I hope the switch release (VC?) of the previous Primes is within the year.
I don't know if I'll even get this game and it was the most exciting reveal for me.
I seriously need to play the original prime games...
@hcfwesker great idea
I still cannot believe Metroid Prime 4 is in development!
They didn't even do anything except a logo and I still wet my pants
I saw the "4" and thought, what is it his? Fantastic four? Lol. Then Metroid Prime appeared and I whimpered, holy sony...
Metroid Samus Returns, a 2D Metroid and a remake of Metroid II was just announced for 3DS during Treehouse!!!!
And a new Metroid for the 3DS to! YAZZZZZZZZ!!!!!
Hooray!!! Metroid 2 remake on 3DS!!!
And a Metroid remake on 3DS. Someone pinch me, I must be dreaming. No lie, I'm about to shed tears.
@IceClimbers Guess we now know why that fan remake last year got C&D'd.
Just in development and no images... It'll take like 4 years in development...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE don't worry, the hype will fill the space. The footage would just get in the way.
I literally just read someone on IGN hoping it had been a new 2D Metroid, right before Samus' Return was announced.
I'm sure there are plenty of happy Metroid Fans today.
Ok, now I'm listening
THIS is the news I have been waiting for.
I'm hoping they have been working on this for awhile. They usually don't announce a game unless they have a good direction as to where it's going.
So Nintendo has announced a Metroid Prime for Switch and Metroid Samus Returns for 3DS.
Nintendo just announced 2 Metroid games at one E3.
Nintendo won E3.
Back when Federation Force was about to come out, if you recall my ramblings, I had thought Nintendo had Metroid fans by the Morph Balls - if FF sold, Metroid fans proved to be desperate enough to buy anything Samus-related; if it flopped, the franchise would be dead.
Now, however? Federation Force proved Nintendo that yes, Metroid fans want more Metroid.
Federation Force is officially redeemed.
I cried for joy.
YEAH this is super awesome and the 3DS metroid 2 remake looks great.
Metroid Returns looks good too.
I'm glad Retro isn't working on this game. This means we might still get a DKC game!
I'm... I'm crying. I'm so freaking happy!
2 Metroid games, and one coming out in September
Now all I need is Square to announce tomorrow KH3 for the Switch and I got all my game news for the year.
There is also a new Metroid for 3DS announced. where is that article?
Wow! I'll have to dust off my 3DS.
Also I think not sharing much info on games for next year makes sense. It reassures and builds hype without ruining future Directs and E3 presentations. (Like E3 2014/2015)
@Damo
You'll want to update the article, because Retro is NOT working on it. It's being made by a "talented new development team".
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2017/06/13/metroid-prime-4-is-being-developed-by-a-talented-new-development-team.aspx
This and a new Kirby, sweet. Nintendo exceeded my expectations. Congrats Nintendo, good E3.
I legit made an account for this site after a year of lurking in the background, reading articles and comments, and it never fails that someone brings up Metroid on every article.
Me, I don't care for it but I'll hope for a new game for its fans. The logo was a big thing. It's happening. They listened. You got what you asked for. Now you're complaining because there wasn't a trailer? Because it's still in development? Because it's a year or a couple for it to be released? Cut the entitled attitude and simply be happy that it's coming. That's all that matters. Most of you complaining have whined before that a simple announcement would be more than enough. Well...the announcement was there. It's confirmed.
Be happy. Be grateful. Be courteous. Be excited. Something positive. Don't go looking for new reasons to be upset about, considering this has been something you've been begging for. You'll be just fine until they can get a trailer and release date out. Rant over.
I hope this is only being made because the developers have fresh and interesting ideas about what to do with the gameplay and story line. Fan demand alone is not a good reason.
Ideally Nintendo or a third party, new to the IP, is handling development. I'd rather see something different from Retro Studios.
Two new Metroid games in one E3, Mario's now a body hopper (also I want to listen to 1-up Girl again), Kirby can have three frienemies, Rocket League on the Switch, Xenoblade actually coming this year. What a low key but exciting E3 by Nintendo. I'd love to see an fanedit Digital Event with all the awesome trimmings.
I've never played a Metroid game but I really want to get this. I've heard nothing but great things about the Metroid series.
Surely they could've shown some footage if this is Retro Studios' big project? They finished their last game (DKC Tropical Freeze) 3.5 years ago. :/ I mean... Not showing anything, just a logo? What the heck? Either Retro's been busy working on another game and they've just started development of Prime 4 alongside it, or this game's being done by some other studio. Either way, it's a LONG way off. I'm not expecting it until holiday 2019 at the very earliest.
@JessM87 Yeah this game is probably Holiday 18, so of course they would not reveal anything, may even a longer wait, but now there is hope, everyone should be positive, cause that means its coming eventually. People should not be on the negative, even if they started working on it last week, its coming.
@LinksMightySword
How, they didn't even show any footage, a announcement isn't enough but still great to hear though
@CB85 It isn't Retro.
What? No F-Zero AGAIN Nintendo? E3 Fail!</troll snickering>
Seriously though, I can't believe they actually did it. I really didn't think they would. "Now in development" makes me wonder why it's so far back, and makes me wonder if what Retro was working on before got canned. But still, I can't believe it.
hasn't anyone learned yet to just wait and not get hyped up or could get majorly burned and disappointed. Maybe I'm wrong but Zelda had footage in sometime around 2012 that looked more like Twilight princess and then silent for a few years and then showed footage in 2014 and looked vastly different and older video was said to be a tech demo. Also supposed to release in either 2014 or 2015 and then finally gets released for both Switch and Wii U at the end of Wii U's life and the beginning of Switch as a launch title. Same thing could happen with this it could release at end of Switch life and release alongside the next console. Also we have no details either way and the fact that Retro isn't working on it which they did an amazing job on the first three. A little hard to get any type of hype for me anyway off of just an announcement off an announced name alone until further notice I will just wait and see
@NintySnesMan
Did you play the previous games ? That's how.
@Rman12 Who cares? Zelda turned out to be an amazing game. The existence of Prime 4 warrants the hype even if we don't see it for years.
So Retro Studios are not working on MP4... I bet they're working on F-Zero instead. Bam!
I just hope they do Retro justice with this game!
@NEStalgia Maybe you're right and Retro's project got canned. Or maybe they're going to drop F-Zero on us. I mean, anything can happen in a post-Prime 4 confirmed world, right? For a second, when Kirby popped up in the spotlight, I thought that was going to be revealed as Retro's mystery project. Sadly, the mystery continues.
@subpopz
Yup, this announcement alone wins E3, imo. Would something more have been nice? Sure. But the way I look at it, at least we know MP 4 is happening. After the disasters of Other M and Federation Force, that's good enough for me, this will make up for those.
@NoxAeturnus No one denies that Zelda was an amazing game but some people buy certain consoles just for one amazing exclusive alone so I only commented on that as someone who doesn't own a switch why announcing a title doesn't excite me. This is the only game for me that would make a switch worth owning as I personally so far am not interested in the Switch at all and have all the games I want for now on the Wii U. If this ended up being like the last situation and constantly delayed up until the point of the next console some people may get disappointed and feel burned. I was only speaking for myself that I'm not hyped off an announced name I know nothing about more that the title of Metroid Prime 4 that is not being made by Retro and is no cause for me to run out and by a Switch when this may get delayed up until the point it releases on Switch and their next console simultaneously.
@SmaMan But y can't he?
@NoxAeturnus I'm guessing we have to wait until next E3 to find out what Retro's working on. At this point I'm convinced they're working on Mother 3.
I mean it's been YEARS. How weird is it we finally get MP4 AND we still have to wonder what Retro's working on? It's either very big, or very cancelled, or very in development heck.
This series just has such love among old school N fans. I think because this and Pokemon are so far off all they wanted to do was a soft reveal just to let us know its happening. What is funny is how this and the 2D Metroid totally stole the show. I mean they showed about 30min of MarioO in treahouse and it looks unreal, is coming this fall and most years this would be a show stopper. I am stoked as I will be going all in on Mario+Rabbids and then MarioO and then Xeno2......its going to be a great second half to 2017.
@JessM87
Welcome!
I still think it's funny that Reggie told us back in January when asked about Metroid and said "wait until after E3 and we'll see." And nobody believed him because he cries wolf so often. (I'm guessing that means cloud saves are a thing too when online goes paid.)
And Trinnen wins the award for Master Troll this E3, minutes before the Spotlight he tells us "holiday '17" before they bombard us with 2 Metroids, Yoshi, Pokemon mainline, and Kirby for '18.
Metroid is back baby and that's okay if Retro Studio isn't involve this time as I felt that RS had already proven they are capable of making great game so now it's time they make their own unique IP for the Switch.
@LinksMightySword
Yep played them, but a game with no footage doesn't win E3, also no Retro. Monster hunter world's, BG&E 2 showed footage, for me that's better than staring at a logo, I love metroid but footage was needed to win E3
Metroid is great, but I reeeeeally wish this had been a new 3D Donkey Kong game instead.
(Man, been waiting forever to make this... Um... Joke. Yeah, joke, let's go with that.)
I knew this was going to be announced, too bad no gameplay, but it is something to look forward to.
I wonder if Retro is working 3DS Metroid game?
It's about time.
Now we just need to nag them about a new F-Zero.
Hah! I definitely freaked out everyone in the break room at work when they dropped this bomb.
@NintySnesMan
To each their own. Hope it turns out to be a great game for all of us .
Nintendo them selves making this? I hope there's another donkey Kong on the way also
Well whoever it is that is developing this, hopefully they do remember that Metroid is more about exploration and adventure than just straight up shooting, Metroid Prime 3 went way too far into the shooter territory and it greatly suffered for it.
I'm calling it... Retro's working on a 3D Donkey Kong game.
Some games are system-sellers. This was always going to be one of them. It's really that simple. Since BotW was available for Wii U I had no plans of owning a Switch. Now I will own one eventually. I hope Nintendo themselves are developing this entry. Thank you Nintendo for meeting public demand. It's rarely a faulty strategy.
@Expa0
You're right about that. I'm sure we won't be disappointed. Playing exactly that music track from Metroid Prime 1 in this announcement tells me they know what they're doing.
Coming in March, 2020
It's unbelievable how some people here still are trying to find something to bash, always the same pathetic haters.
A talented new team, eh?
Well. I don't know what to think or expect.
For now I'm just happy that Retro seemingly get to work on something else. Going back to Prime after most of the star power staff for those games left would likely have been unpleasant.
I guess this is a way to reassure Metroid Prime fans for the time being. Name dropping this and having no footage though isn't impressive in the slightest.
Hope it's not too controversial to say I'm really pleased to see it's a new team working on it. Looking forward to seeing what fresh thinking can bring to the series.
@electrolite77
I agree with you. As great as the originals are, I don't think it's fair to have Retro locked into the franchise forever. I'm sure they have other projects to work on.
I cried a little when I saw this. I'm not joking.
@Dr_Corndog Time to update the avatar?
Retro Studios needs to be working on a complete HD remake of Metroid Prime Trilogy or a 3D remake of Super Metroid!
That would blow my mind!!!
No Retro
This is the best E3 news I've heard yet! I just hope it's closer to the first two Prime games because Prime 3 just didn't do it for me. Gutted that it's not Retro though.
@JessM87 Good rant.
Retro studios is so dead.
It's gonna be a good few years until we can play this.
Watching on my phone walking home from work,as soon as that music started I almost let out the loudest AAAAAHHHHHHH I've ever done. Someone may have thought I'd just [email protected]#£ myself 😉.That music sent chills all over me. In fact I'm going thought hook up the WiiU and play through the trilogy again!
I don't like Metroid and this announcement means nothing to me personally. But I do like how the very vocal fans of the franchise are likely to be placated even just a little bit.
Hoping for a new IP from Retro.Or maybe an Eternal Darkness sequel. Not another Donkey Kong,let someone else try that
Is Retro Studios still own by Nintendo?
I feel mix about this. I love the game is coming but no Retro behind it makes me skeptical but if the team behind this are the new prodigies of Nintendo with fresh ideas then yes to this.
Now I really want to know what is Retro doing? Are they really doing Diddy Kong Racing 2?
@PlayedNSlayed is Retro still part of Nintendo?
A new Metroid is announced, and some people still complain. That's gamer logic for you.
Looking forward to playing this in 2020.
With this and Pokemon, Nintendo won E3. Was literally screaming when I seen the logo.
@capitalism "With this and Pokemon, Nintendo won E3."
Oh FFS just stop.
Platinum games would ace this.
@-Green-
They would never show the game at this point.
They have a bunch of other games on the way and already here.
It would be a waste for Nintendo to give anything at all away when they can basically fill up their whole next years E3 with Metroid if poop hits the fan and they end up not having much else to show at the time.
I'm sure next years E3 will be all about Pokémon Switch and Metroid and Smash, if it doesn't get shown earlier.
@gatorboi352
All this crap about Ninty winning E3 because they announced 2 games with no footage is rubbish. Any game with no footage can't win a E3 for Ninty and the rest were bloody platformers that play no different from their previous games, for me Sony and Ubisoft did better than Ninty, also I ain't biased I own Sony and Ninty hardware
@Pigeon
That's not necessarily true.
Nintendo announced Fire Emblem and showed no gameplay, yet told us it's coming the very next year.
Nintendo knows how to piecemeal their announcements to get the most out of them. You can only reap the benefits of a first reveal once. Yet just announcing the game is coming is enough to excite most, if it's a game people are really interested in (like Metroid, like Fire Emblem). And then they still get to reap the benefits of that first time reveal next year, or whenever they show it.
But really... who cares. It's coming and that's what counts. And it comes when it comes. Plenty of other games in the meantime.
The fact it's not made by Retro is probably a good thing. The people who created the first Metroid Prime game (the best one) are no longer at Retro as I understand it. If it's being developed in-house at Nintendo then it's in good hands, and the template is already there. Also, it means Retro are working on something else, and if current Retro are the same people who made DKC:TP on the Wii U then that's likely another excellent game in the pipeline for Switch. Win win.
@NEStalgia I think so. Finally.
@LinksMightySword What does that even mean? :-/
This is what we needed. Obviously the team has begun working on this title just recently. But I'm glad that Metroid is coming back with a main entry into Switch. Also, the 3DS version is a good thing, because it was successfully kept secret until now. i'm looking forward to a Metroid Direct by the end of the year with more details about this title. Welcome back, Samus.
Whatever happened to the idea of "we're only going to show what's coming this year"? Well, I'm glad that boneheaded idea was as short lived as the Wii U and discarded alongside it. It's fine to tell everyone what's coming down the pike ahead of time. Gives more people a reason to buy an NS in anticipation of MP4 and other heavy hitters.
This makes me very happy Nintendo is not going to just leave this venerable series to gather dust.
Hopefully it will turn out to be an original game comparable to the first three primes, not a rehash or reboot of them, and avoid the character issues from other M. Have to wait and see when more info gets released/leaked.
Hopefully Retro are working on the next Donkey Kong.
@Dev
, with thunderous applause.
I was excited for a few minutes until I remembered Federation Farce was a Metroid Prime title too. I want to be excited but if it's the kiddie infant art style again then I'll just put the money towards a One X.
@Geeks4Life
It means that if you have played all of the previous prime games and enjoyed them and appreciated them as much as the loyal fans of the series , you would have a measure of confidence / faith that it is going to be a rewarding release/ experience.
Wonderful news! I've been slowly working my way through the Metroid games, and Prime 2 will be up very soon. This gives me something to look forward to after Metroid Prime Trilogy.
Start taking notes, Capcom.
All of this is O.K.
That is OverKill!!!
I hope they didn't forget about our Double Cross!
Ok now im happy. E3 worthwhile after all! Woohoo go Nintendo!
I'm calling it: Launch title for the follow up to Switch!
@IceClimbers I'm fine with that. I would enjoy a new take on the series. Just... Not in the "Star Fox Zero" kind of way.
I watched the Spotlight at 1am. This woke me up much better than my coffee did.
Time to replay the trilogy! (Well I never played the 3rd one yet.) That will change after I get through the first 2.
This could be the only game next year and I would be 100% good with that. Nintendo was bold with Odyssey and Metroid Prime 4 (so happy to talk about a real game now) Even though we didn't see anything, I'm already 100% confident this game. Like that they have some new and old blood to keep the game honest. Day 1 Pre Order, can't wait
So we got one more thing to look forward to since Retro got to be doing something right.
With Kensuke Tanabe involved in Prime 4, I'm not too concerned about the quality of the game.
The year is 2030. Nintendo has already released 5 Metroid games, 2 F-Zero games, 3 Advance Wars games, and a Golden Sun game...
...And we will still be wondering what Retro has been working on...
So excited!! Makes me wanna play Metroid Prime again 😃
Words cannot describe how much I cannot wait to play this game. ^_^
Who else is going to replay the trilogy now? Current plan is to play Prime 1 in the fall, 2 sometime in the first two months of '18, and the third prior to the release of Prime 4. Of course I am assuming it will make a 2018 release, gosh I hope so~
@gatorboi352
Oh FFS, just go over to Push Square where you belong. BTW, I'm loving all this cross play between Xbox and Switch while Sony says they're not doing it because of the "kids". What a lame ass excuse 😂😂
Well, know I have incentive to push through my backlog and get to playing the Prime trilogy. I'm happy this is coming since so many fans were asking for it.
Still, it raises the question - if Retro is confirmed to not be developing Prime, what are they doing? They've gone dark for what, 4 years? It would be a shame if they became the new NST.
This announcement made me very glad to be a Switch owner. Also, I feel like today reinforced the idea that Switch is the unified platform I've wanted for a few years now.
Yes! First decent e3 announcement. I'd still like a 2D version too, and F-Zero, and Star Fox ported and refined from WU.
Waited over a decade for this, wow
"Producer Kensuke Tanabe has stated that he's leading “a talented new development team." Tanabe acted as producer on the first three Prime games."
Doesn't mean it isn't a new team at Retro going by these words alone. If Retro were to do it, they would need a new team because the main people who did the Prime Trilogy have since left.
@HalBailman Did you catch the announcement of Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS? It looks amazing and I hope it comes with Zero Mission and Fusion.
@SmaMan It seems you missed the joke that was intended by the "what is this franchise" comment
@MadAdam81 Woooooah there buddy. That's such an unrealistic expectation. Come back down to earth, and hope that they do a similar thing with those games, instead of having them with Samus Returns
@MadAdam81 Yep. 30 minutes after I was here. I can't wait for it!
This is really exciting, I hope retro is working on something totally new
@Zoya Having them remade (again) in this new engine would be best but that's too much too hope.
Is it possible that nintendo could be having some problems with Retro or that they juat aren't developing a game currently? It just seems really strange to me that we've heard nothing from them for what now 3 years?
@JaxonH then they give us not one bit TWO Metriod games.
All is forgiven Nintendo.
Now where's my mother 3?
This was such a wonderful and unexpected announcement. I want this so much.
@AlexOlney Bottom quote. Insta-like.
My guess is that this will be the big game of E3 2018. Could release fall 2018.
I sooooo hope they won't muck it up. That Nintendo is making it themselves makes me a little itchy. For example, the story could be very weak.
Its a pity though that its called Prime 4 since its really time to move the story forward. The logo suggests its again about Phazon though. Maybe there's a piece of Phazon on board of the ship we see at the ending of Prime 3?
Now I am also curious what exactly Retro is doing. Maybe they are doing a new franchise after all?
One last thing about Metroid: Lol, for all we know they might just do another Federation force or Other M. Only when we see some footage we can rest easily (or not).
@IceClimbers Yeah I read that rumour. So that's actually bad news imo, 'cos it means Retro haven't been working on Prime 4 for the last 3.5 years, and the game is years away. If they couldn't show any footage, not even any concept art, but just a horribly copy-pasted logo, that tells us it won't be out for another 3 years at the least. These games take ages to develop.
People used to say Metroid was dead...
Eat manure, ragamuffins!
Retro is working on a DK game; that and Switch Smash will be the flagship titles for summer 2018, with Prime 3 coming in the holiday season. I'll bet my magic Mario cap on it.
Only part of E3 that made my ears prick up, not only that, they damn near flew off my head.
E3 won in a single screen shot of some text. Not many companies can do that.
They just added this after test viewing turned bad for Nintendo spotlight.
It's not even hit the prelims, expect in 2019 onwards.
As for retro....3 years of secret production and it's not donkey or metroid. Who knows I supose the question is if it's not metroid or donkey do we really care or want?
They have not said that it's not Retro Studios (that's purely assumption), all they've said is that it's a new team... that new team could easily be within Retro Studios.
Retro Studios have basically been putting together a new team over the past few years following a handful of people leaving after the last Prime game... we know that from job postings and reports of people being hired from other studios... so it could easily be this new team who are working on the new game.
@Jessica286 They are still a part of Nintendo but they've been very closed off and reclusive since Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze,so who knows what they have up their sleeve.....ha that almost rhymed!
@CB85 Actually I think this is good news that we have a new tea, but the same producer. The combined old and new blood should make for new fun ideas. And I think they could have shown something off, but I think Nintendo wanted to keep us guessing and anticipated.
Wow already with a Zelda title, new Mario 3D platformer 64 style, Fire Emblem, and now Metroid Prime 4? I wonder if they new the Wii U was going to fail which is why they didn't work on these for it. They just had to bite the bullet and wait for the development of the Switch before making these AAA titles. Only things that could make this better would be a Pikmin 4 on Switch!
@DragonEleven they've said it's a new team within Nintendo (Japan), so it's not Retro Studios. Obviously doesn't mean they aren't helping in some way, but the development is led out of Japan.
I felt like the whole presentation was a series of slaps. I went in with the idea we'd see some Splatoon 2, ARMS, XC2, Mario, and maybe 1 or 2 surprises. Nintendo just came in and was like SLAP! Here's Metroid Prime 4! SLAP! Here's Return of Samus! SLAP! Here's a new Kirby! SLAP! Here's a new Yoshi! SLAP! Here's a Pokémon Switch announcement! SLAP! Here's Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga!
Not just that, but both Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Mario Odyssey looked great!
Anyway, back from that tangent, I wonder if Retro is working on another Donkey Kong, maybe a 3D one this time? Even if it isn't, it'll be interesting to find out what they're doing... Maybe another SLAP!?
@LinksMightySword That makes more sense to me
@antdickens Retro Studios is a part of Nintendo, so that part wouldn't be wrong, but I haven't seen any mention of it being specifically Nintendo of Japan who are developing it.
I was not expecting this at all and this was by far the best part of e3 for me. I'm glad Nintendo is brave enough to continue the Prime franchise after the poor sales of Federation Force and Corruption (to a much lesser extent).
@capitalism so uh... I don't even own a PlayStation.
I'm now really hyped for the Switch. Was on the fence before but am really starting to want one now.
That reminds me, I haven't even played Metriod Prime 3 yet despite owning it for years!!!! I'd better get playing!!!
Finally, an FPS is being released for Switch.
