I found the fury green and especially the start of volt forge to have incredible atmosphere that is worth experiencing.
Similarly I enjoyed the tension the ice facility built and then the escape from the facility was well done too.
The lava level the NPCs were a bit too much, but towards the end of the level the atmosphere and boss fight were great.
The mines I didn’t like the repetitive roles the NPCs played. I actually rolled my eyes that they all basically do the same thing one after another and walk out at the end.
The boss fights were awesome.
The hallmark of the series is exploration and isolation. And this game broke it. I only have prime remastered to compare to, but exploring is kind of a hub and spoke model centred around the desert and there needed to be links between some of the levels. The only short cut is from your base in fury green to the desert which cuts out a chunk of map. This needed to be expanded to other ways of linking the map.
Is it perfect? No. I think it’s still a good game. I would say it’s like ‘Skyward Sword’ of Zelda. It’s still worth playing. I don’t know that people grievances are as game breaking as is being made out. Unfortunately, in the world of social media, we need instant reactions and outrage in reviews to this game seems to tie into that.
Hype probably led to over valuation ahead of switch 2. Besides stock is for long term. Switch 2 is looking less likely to fail. So if you buy Nintendo stock now and hang onto it for 20 years you’ll be laughing
AI at the moment is just a tool. I do think in our lifetime we will see AI become self aware and that’s when it will get interesting. That why groups are rushing forward with what feels like little thought towards guard rails (ie AI don’t murder the humans) because it’s more important to be first to market.
The CES expo humanoid robots are working on production lines to help build humanoid robots. And also in our lifetime time I think we will see most houses in wealthy countries move toward having some kind of robotics that independently does all the crummy chores.
The AI bubble will pop and we will be left with epic data centres but I think there should really be a robot bubble right now. I think the pay day is closer.
Miles was fine. The hand holding was excessive. Traversal was not quite right too. Having a central hub with a spoke model was less interconnected than prime 1.
Otherwise the game was pretty good
EDIT: should probably recognise the positives too as it feels like a bit of a pile on inspired by Myles hate. Visually I thought the first area was stunning. The atmosphere in the second area was equally awesome. Also the boss fights weee top notch. Most of the time I needed a few goes to recognise the patterns but once you figured these things out it was never unfair. The final battle is epic. And as ridiculous as the mines were with the recurrent pattern of federation troop involvement, the fact that you know the monsters will come to loud sounds adds a layer of stress (but it also adds the grating noise to all future greiver encounters too, which really needs to be removed).
Now that it’s 2026 I’m pretty much hanging out for Indiana jones. I’ll take doom the dark ages if it drops, and the other end of the spectrum I’ll get the next bluey game too 🤣
Surely we will see an impossible port or two like doom dark ages. Like has been said Zelda 40th anniversary will be the movie trailer. Hopefully a 3D Mario lands. They need a console defining game this year
@dazza Just worth flagging that I think one of the switch updates in November prevented quite a few 3rd party docks from working. Possibly due to changing the ‘handshake’ over usb-c between dock and console.
My 3rd party dock stopped working and I think I’m not alone.
My switch 2 goty has to be Metroid prime 4. It’s really only up against bonanza and Mario kart world though. So whilst I’ve had fun, I’m sure there are more deserving titles
The only thing from miles that bothered me was his increasingly obvious hints. “Now you have thunder shot go to x”
B1tch I just wanted to explore!
The radio button from in the map would be great to pull hints rather than have them pushed to you. However, when I’m in a ‘dungeon’ and hit the button it often locks controls for 2-3 seconds then says communications unavailable.
I’ve got no problem with any of the dialogue etc. But hints from miles should be request based. And traversal shortcuts need to be optimised.
Otherwise love the game. People have previously teased out the illusion of non-linearity in other games. I stand by my 8/10 though.
Can’t speak for switch 1 version, but I’m feeling similar to prime remastered. Although I’m maybe 30% in and haven’t really unlocked much yet.
Game is beautiful. It’s fun and compelling exploring an alien world. I found the early game controls a bit too much and I would make controller input errors in hectic boss fights, especially with trying to use some of the psychic skills.
The world feels immense. It does have enough difference to not just feel like a repeat of previous primes. I can’t comment on graphics too much because I’m playing on a rubbish old TV.
I would probably give an 8-9 out of 10. Probably leaning towards the 8 more than 9. I think Doom 2016 is still my bench mark for an atmospheric (admittedly combat driven) FPS and if you added in serious exploration to that game, that would be my 10/10 for this genre.
So yeah that’s how I justify my I guess 8.5 out of 10 vibes. Don’t think it deserves a 9 but probably doesn’t deserve an 8 either.
Author need to make a comment in here for his son to find which says something along the lines of “find this comment and show me and the switch 2 will be yours” Treasure hunt for the win
How did Japan win with a rainbow outline? 🤣
I had to go with NA despite Europe being my recognisable console. I just think the fonts catch your attention and visual marketing is just more eye catching
Edit: and yes this is even though I really dislike the NA SNES design and dislike the button colours even more.
Well it’s too late for prime 2 and 3 now. Missed opportunity. Even if they released them on switch virtual console game cube emulator who is going to play once prime 4 drops?
Nerd-gasm. Still super sceptical that this will work. I just don’t think link as a silent protagonist will translate well to the big screen. But the casting and costumes look great
I’d probably shuffle the top 25 around a little but mostly agree. The tough thing is the games I totally missed on my journey. I have a bit more snes love too with contra IV and Castlevania IV being up there
Not that I’ve bought a new TV yet, but are people thinking 1080p 120fps or 4K 60fps?
Seems like this one will depart from the series a little, which isn’t always a bad thing. I would still love to play 2 & 3 first too. Don’t know if I will be able to go back after the quality leap 4 will bring
That will entertain my kids for about 7 views of the trailer. But yeah, as others have said… calling this a Nintendo direct feels disappointing somehow.
I only joined in 2008. Late adopter, my apologies.
But happy birthday NL team
EDIT: yes I arrived to help figure out the Wii virtual console, which was amazing. And to help figure out which GC games I should try because the GC was to only Nintendo console I skipped.

Oh. Pretty sure I built it wrong. Probably haven’t seen a brick gameboy for 20 years to be fair.

Very wholesome. Glad you managed to reunite a few

The guy taking over should have been called Mario. Sorry Nintendo, you’ve missed a real opportunity

I took a few goes to beat this guy. And it’s a drawn out fight. Thanks for reassuring me I wasn’t missing anything.
Also would be curious to see page visits for each boss guide to see which one people struggle with the most

Ouch. That poll is not good.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Bionic Commando (NES)
I love that Japan has a bit more of a sinister vibe. It got my vote the European cover is actually quite comical by comparison

I reckon I’m going to struggle after getting used to doom combat loops and having to go back to defensive gameplay

Re: 40 Switch 1 & 2 Games You Should Check Out In The 'Cyber Deals' eShop Sale (North America)
Finally picked up split fiction. And my girls love playing it together but do a lot of screaming at the tv and each other.
Might get wolfenstein 2 as well. It’s so cheap
Re: 50 Best Super Nintendo (SNES) Games Of All Time
Good list. I would shuffle some of the top 20, and super Mario all stars is just too much Mario and technically just NES games right?
Also love that SNES Prince of Persia made it in. I reckon it’s the definitive version

Split fiction to play with my girls, then it’s a backlog consideration / ability to resist the urge for tony hawk 1+2 and elder scrolls

Re: Round Up: The Final Previews Are In For Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Also the ‘isolation’ fans should watch the 7 minute trailer. There’s at least 3 other NPCs who sporadically join in.
I’m secretly giggling at the outrage
