Re: Nintendo Indie World Showcase Announced For Tomorrow, 3rd March 2026

timp29

Haha didn’t see this coming. Still waiting for some first party direct, but if I was a Nintendo 3rd party developer, I would request some time between my announcements and Nintendo’s first party announcements as most 3rd party titles will become white noise against Nintendo’s announcements.

Hopefully this means a 1st party direct late March / early april

Re: Anniversary: The Legend Of Zelda Turns 40 Today - How Did You First Play It?

timp29

Anyone seen the videos that explore the Miyamoto philosophy of ‘miniature garden’ / ‘garden in a box’ when making Zelda? Did a bit of a deep dive to celebrate the 40th, and this was an interesting (but very slow) lesson on Japanese design philosophy and interestingly makes the wind waker maybe the most ‘Zelda’ game of all by that rationale. Be interested to hear from some serious Nintendo fans if those theories hold up.

Anyway thank you Miyamoto san for enthralling me as a child in this magical world. Also the team at system 3 for last ninja on c64. Some of my most cherished childhood experiences.

Re: Anniversary: The Legend Of Zelda Turns 40 Today - How Did You First Play It?

timp29

Whilst I’m stoked it’s the 40th anniversary of my favourite video game franchise ever. I started with Zelda II on NES in 1990. I actually preferred this to Zelda I which I played later. I can’t help but feel Breath of the Wild is a spiritual cousin to Zelda I, although I don’t think Miyamoto has ever said anything to that effect. But the story of Miyamoto running around as a kid and imagining the fields and forests with a child’s imagination that would later become Zelda is rather wholesome (at least that’s my take on the versions of the story I’ve heard).

Can we have a history lesson / article on the origins of Zelda? Or someone link an accurate YouTube vid please?

Re: Round Up: The Previews Are In For Virtual Boy - Nintendo Classics

Haha can’t wait for my own “headache, pain and nausea”

I had no idea the VB was a thing until years later. I think it just didn’t get a mention in Australia or maybe I just didn’t care when I was 15?

Looking forward to trying this out. I know it’s a gimmick but I love the whacky and goofy stuff Nintendo tries. Sometimes they’re just so out there it’s wild.

Re: Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase Announced For Tomorrow, 5th February 2026

timp29

According to the leakers, sounds like: final fantasy ?7 remake, expedition 33. I hope we hear red dead redemption 2, Elden ring, Indiana jones, doom dark ages, dusk bloods.

Then there is some chat about maybe a 1st party direct only a few week later with 3d Mario, xenoblade and probably every Zelda remaster… and hopefully an ocarina of time remake.

Fingers crossed, all of this would be too good to be true

Re: DOOM's Switch Release Still Has A Compatibility Issue On Switch 2

timp29

Fell in love with doom in 1994. Had to give the reboot a crack and only owned a switch. Loading times just sucked and I abandoned it. However switch 2 came and I picked it up again and had an absolute blast.

Cracking game, I hope they further tweak it for a switch 2 edition. The atmosphere for this game is phenomenal.

On the flip side, doom eternal the atmosphere isn’t as good, but with the added mobility and combat loop changes the game is absolutely manic and fantastic in completely different ways to doom 2016.

If like me you live under a rock and haven’t played doom yet (and aren’t too squeamish) do yourself a favour and pick these up.

(EDIT: as others have pointed out though, switch 1/2 is NOT the definitive experience if you have other platforms available)

Also hopefully we get a dark ages announcement for this year.

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

timp29

I found the fury green and especially the start of volt forge to have incredible atmosphere that is worth experiencing.

Similarly I enjoyed the tension the ice facility built and then the escape from the facility was well done too.

The lava level the NPCs were a bit too much, but towards the end of the level the atmosphere and boss fight were great.

The mines I didn’t like the repetitive roles the NPCs played. I actually rolled my eyes that they all basically do the same thing one after another and walk out at the end.

The boss fights were awesome.

The hallmark of the series is exploration and isolation. And this game broke it. I only have prime remastered to compare to, but exploring is kind of a hub and spoke model centred around the desert and there needed to be links between some of the levels. The only short cut is from your base in fury green to the desert which cuts out a chunk of map. This needed to be expanded to other ways of linking the map.

Is it perfect? No. I think it’s still a good game. I would say it’s like ‘Skyward Sword’ of Zelda. It’s still worth playing. I don’t know that people grievances are as game breaking as is being made out. Unfortunately, in the world of social media, we need instant reactions and outrage in reviews to this game seems to tie into that.

Re: "I Don't See AI Taking Over" - Split Fiction Director Josef Fares On The Rise Of AI

timp29

AI at the moment is just a tool. I do think in our lifetime we will see AI become self aware and that’s when it will get interesting. That why groups are rushing forward with what feels like little thought towards guard rails (ie AI don’t murder the humans) because it’s more important to be first to market.

The CES expo humanoid robots are working on production lines to help build humanoid robots. And also in our lifetime time I think we will see most houses in wealthy countries move toward having some kind of robotics that independently does all the crummy chores.

The AI bubble will pop and we will be left with epic data centres but I think there should really be a robot bubble right now. I think the pay day is closer.

Re: Poll: So, Now The Dust Has Settled, How Did You Find Myles MacKenzie?

timp29

Miles was fine. The hand holding was excessive. Traversal was not quite right too. Having a central hub with a spoke model was less interconnected than prime 1.

Otherwise the game was pretty good

EDIT: should probably recognise the positives too as it feels like a bit of a pile on inspired by Myles hate. Visually I thought the first area was stunning. The atmosphere in the second area was equally awesome. Also the boss fights weee top notch. Most of the time I needed a few goes to recognise the patterns but once you figured these things out it was never unfair. The final battle is epic. And as ridiculous as the mines were with the recurrent pattern of federation troop involvement, the fact that you know the monsters will come to loud sounds adds a layer of stress (but it also adds the grating noise to all future greiver encounters too, which really needs to be removed).

Re: Best Nintendo Switch 2 Third-Party TV Docks

timp29

@dazza Just worth flagging that I think one of the switch updates in November prevented quite a few 3rd party docks from working. Possibly due to changing the ‘handshake’ over usb-c between dock and console.

My 3rd party dock stopped working and I think I’m not alone.

Re: Fans Uncover Unused Dialogue From Metroid Prime 4

timp29

The only thing from miles that bothered me was his increasingly obvious hints. “Now you have thunder shot go to x”

B1tch I just wanted to explore!

The radio button from in the map would be great to pull hints rather than have them pushed to you. However, when I’m in a ‘dungeon’ and hit the button it often locks controls for 2-3 seconds then says communications unavailable.

I’ve got no problem with any of the dialogue etc. But hints from miles should be request based. And traversal shortcuts need to be optimised.

Otherwise love the game. People have previously teased out the illusion of non-linearity in other games. I stand by my 8/10 though.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Metroid Prime 4: Beyond?

timp29

Can’t speak for switch 1 version, but I’m feeling similar to prime remastered. Although I’m maybe 30% in and haven’t really unlocked much yet.

Game is beautiful. It’s fun and compelling exploring an alien world. I found the early game controls a bit too much and I would make controller input errors in hectic boss fights, especially with trying to use some of the psychic skills.

The world feels immense. It does have enough difference to not just feel like a repeat of previous primes. I can’t comment on graphics too much because I’m playing on a rubbish old TV.

I would probably give an 8-9 out of 10. Probably leaning towards the 8 more than 9. I think Doom 2016 is still my bench mark for an atmospheric (admittedly combat driven) FPS and if you added in serious exploration to that game, that would be my 10/10 for this genre.

So yeah that’s how I justify my I guess 8.5 out of 10 vibes. Don’t think it deserves a 9 but probably doesn’t deserve an 8 either.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - SNES Classic Mini Console

timp29

How did Japan win with a rainbow outline? 🤣
I had to go with NA despite Europe being my recognisable console. I just think the fonts catch your attention and visual marketing is just more eye catching

Edit: and yes this is even though I really dislike the NA SNES design and dislike the button colours even more.
