Re: Random: It Turns Out That AI Isn't Very Good At Pokémon Red

Shepdawg1

Given the fact that AI continues to hallucinate and spit out wrong information even on simple queries, there was never any chance it would work well. TwitchPlaysPokemon at least was entertaining because you knew that every single bad input was the result of someone being on a chat delay or just screwing around because it was funny. And that, in turn, made it funny.

Re: Talking Point: The Switch 2 Pre-Order Situation Sucks, But Can Nintendo Do Anything About It?

Shepdawg1

Yeah, I was one of the unfortunate souls who had to deal with the U.S. stores’ websites not wanting to work properly. While I did secure a preorder from Walmart, I wouldn’t get it launch day, so I caved and sat outside my GameStop for two hours the following morning. That experience was FAR smoother. My second preorder will go to a friend for MSRP while I get one on launch day. Win-win, in my book.

Re: Square Enix Details Plan To 'Reboot And Awaken' Its Business

Shepdawg1

They just need to stop chasing the hot trends (NFTs, live-service, mascot-driven 3D platformers, etc…) and focus more on what made them beloved in the first place: high-quality RPGs. That’s what they’re good at. That’s what people love about them. That’s what’ll help them stay up…as long as they market them too.

Re: Former Assassin's Creed Lead Isn't Happy About Switch 2's Game-Key Cards

Shepdawg1

Except that these game key-cards are essentially the same as physical PS5 and Xbox Series games. Since disc read speeds are too slow for what these games demand, the game data is installed anyway, so the disc itself becomes a glorified key at that point.

And before people point out that the data is still on the discs, don’t forget that just about every game nowadays gets patched post-release, so the game data on the disc will, 99 times out of 100, always be incomplete, making digital downloads a necessity again.

While, of course, it would always be nice for these carts to contain the actual game on them, the fact is that these will enable smaller publishers and developers to get an actual physical presence to store shelves without having to pay more for the more expensive carts all while being more sensible than the stupid code-in-a-box releases. And yes, I also acknowledge that it allows larger publishers who can actually afford to pay for the more expensive carts to be lazy and cheap out (cough Sega cough), but there really isn’t an elegant solution with proprietary media like this.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aimé Weighs In On 'Switch 2 Welcome Tour' Controversy (Sort Of)

Shepdawg1

@Oracles_fanboi Dude…it’s a video game. The world will live on regardless of what happens, and video games aren’t a common commodity. They’re a luxury. Always have been. Always will be. And the important part of all luxuries is to remember this: you don’t need them. So yes, it is a non-issue.

And don’t forget: the impetus for your scenario is ultimately on the consumer. If the consumers buy it, that’s what the market wanted. And lest we forget, I said that it’s not worth getting upset over. Just don’t buy it. That’ll send the message. I’m not planning on buying it unless reviews say otherwise. If other people buy it, that’s their choice.

Re: Oops, Yoshi's Woolly World Featured In Switch 2's "Compatible Switch Games"

Shepdawg1

Sadly, it's almost surely just an error. And it hurts me to say that because Yoshi's Woolly World is one of the best platformers the Wii U ever had, and I KNOW Nintendo is sitting on HD versions of those adorable stop-motion shorts they made just for the 3DS version, yet most of them aren't released.

All they have to do is port it to Switch 2 with all the 3DS content and I would buy it for a third time. Please Nintendo, I beg.

Re: How Would You Rate The Pokémon Presents Showcase For February 2025?

Shepdawg1

I think we’re holding these events on too high of a pedestal. They’re not the Pokémon version of a Nintendo Direct.

But all the same, they really didn’t show off Legends Z-A in the best light. Also, I hate that the spinoff games are forever in purgatory. Anything new has to come to mobile. And what they’re bringing to mobile with Champions isn’t even new to begin with. It’s just core series battles but all the Pokémon and gimmicks are there.

Re: Hideki Kamiya Wants Nintendo To Reboot Virtual Console For Switch 2

Shepdawg1

If they offered both the subscription model and a purchase option, sure, go ahead. But people saying the Virtual Console only model is better are just wrong and have completely forgotten what we went through in the Wii U era. Nintendo was charging us multiple times for the same games they rereleased on Wii on both Wii U and 3DS. And the drip feed was even worse than it is now (it’s only bad now because Nintendo has largely run out of titles to release). Want to play Super Mario Bros on your Wii U but bought it on Wii? Cough up a dollar for the Wii U functionality or dig your Wii Remote out and go into Wii Mode, you loser. Didn’t keep your Wii Remotes or didn’t buy it on Wii? Make that five dollars. You bought Super Mario Bros on your Wii U and/or your Wii and want to play it on your 3DS? Give us another five bucks, sucker.

The Virtual Console was great when it was first introduced. Then it went off a cliff with subsequent consoles. So much so that everyone wanted a subscription service. And now that we have one, those same people hate it. It just boggles my mind that people forget how things used to be. And the people complaining about the subscription model aren’t doing it right in the first place. Get a group of friends (or other people because there are communities where you can form them on Reddit or Discord) and all go in on a Family Plan. You get all the perks of your desired subscription tier at a fraction of the price. It’s the perfect crime that’s not even a crime.

Re: Nintendo Shuts Down Live-Action Zelda Fan Film, 'Lost In Hyrule'

Shepdawg1

Here for the cancellation:

Unfortunately, the creators were in a no-win situation. I’m sure Nintendo wouldn’t have cared so much if they had decided to make it for free, but given that film production is expensive, even for small productions like this one, it’s no surprise that they needed funding. But predictably, that’s when Nintendo would swoop in and pull the plug. I wish the filmmakers the best in their future projects.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Switch) - Aping A Retro Classic

Shepdawg1

Gonna be honest, I don’t think this is a very good review. I think 8/10 (8.5/10 is my rating) is where it should’ve landed. Labeling it three points lower than the original release and two points lower than the 3DS release when this version is the definitive way to play this game…just doesn’t sit right. Sure, the port work might be a bit sloppy and while I did notice some of the issues present, they weren’t enough for me to want to take an entire point off for it. But when it runs at 60 FPS for 97% of the time, has much higher resolution, infinitely better controls, true widescreen output*, and all of the content from past versions, it’s just a bit weird to me that this version rated significantly lower than the past versions.

But, different strokes for different blokes, I guess. Our opinions don’t match up perfectly, but that’s fine.

*Fun Fact: the Wii can only output 4:3 video. The “widescreen” option just crunches a 16:9 image into the 4:3 aspect ratio, which Nintendo expected to be remedied by your TV auto stretching the image.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of Donkey Kong's Redesign In Mario Kart 9?

Shepdawg1

Yeah, I don’t like it. DK, to me, is funnier and more endearing when he acts as a dumb, lovable meathead, and this design makes him look more like a goofball, which doesn’t really match his character, imo.

I dunno, maybe give him a slightly more furrowed brow and then we’ll be closer. I know the movie had his brow furrowed more and it still looked fine.

Re: Mario Movie's Spike Voice Actor On His Possible Return: "I Haven't Heard Anything"

Shepdawg1

I’ll be surprised if Spike returns. Mostly, I think the majority of the film will be set in the Mushroom Kingdom. That may change based on the final scene of the movie that teased the sequel, but I don’t really see much reason for Spike to return even if they go back to Brooklyn. He was there to motivate the characters to move beyond the comfort of their previous jobs, and they’ve done that quite successfully, so his usefulness is gone.

Re: It Turns Out Pokémon GO Players Have Been Training An AI This Whole Time

Shepdawg1

Not too surprising. Niantic’s status as a game developer has always been a front. They’re a data farm using a game-oriented collection model. This is why they have been so eager to nerf remote raids and ban spoofers in Pokémon GO. There’s little usable data to collect from a phone that isn’t physically present at a location.

As for this AI itself, it depends on what it’ll be used for. AI has uses, but it needs to be implemented responsibly. Only time will tell what they plan to do with it.

Re: Come On, Where Are The Composer Credits in 'Nintendo Music'?

Shepdawg1

Not defending this at all, but…isn’t this a Japanese culture thing? Like where the work of the individuals is largely lumped into one sum and one credit rather than individuals getting credited?

Again, not defending the lack of crediting here and I think it should be here. I’m just asking for clarity.
