Re: Miyamoto Reveals The Moment He Knew He Could Trust Illumination With A Super Mario Movie

Shepdawg1

@Snow-Dust That's no theory at all. That's the truth. Illumination are masters of marketing. Think back to any of their films and you'll likely remember seeing ads for those films all over the dang place. They design everything in such a way to achieve maximum appeal to their target audience (kids), make their films on the literal definition of shoestring budgets, and market them ad nauseam to keep the movie in the public's perception for as long as it's relevant. And the worst part is that since they're brand-safe, most adults will take their children to these movies and think that they're harmless at best, pushing more money into their pockets and allowing them to continue their massive cycle of mediocrity.

Illumination is business first, business second, and maybe some time for art if they spare a second to even think about it. I don't know what Nintendo was thinking with handing them the reigns to Mario, but all I know is that it's probably going to be exactly like their other films: bland and quickly forgotten as soon as it's pushed to stores.

Re: Feature: Game Of The Decade Staff Picks - Xenoblade Chronicles

Shepdawg1

This game takes my personal pick as Game of the Decade. I wasn't around for the fan campaign or any of the buzz around the game, so it flew under my radar. I saw one of my friends playing it and thought it looked boring as sin initially. Then 2015 rolled around. With Shulk appearing in Smash 4 and him being one of my favorites in the game, I decided to check out the New 3DS version when that system came stateside. I couldn't put the game down. I kept wanting to complete every sidequest I saw, but I was super invested in the story and characters. I was legitimately shocked how much I enjoyed the game and since then, I've been hooked on Xenoblade as a series. Xenoblade X made immensely satisfying gameplay at the cost of a decent story, and Xenoblade 2 brought the story back with a bit less interesting gameplay, but overall, the entire series has been one of my favorites. I'll be buying and eagerly playing the remaster when it comes out this year and can't wait to see where the series goes from here.

Re: Guide: Pokémon Sword And Shield - Best Ways To Catch And Breed Shiny Pokémon

Shepdawg1

Good guide, except that it omits something that's being contested right now. Dataminers have pointed out there seems to be only a chance to get the increased odds for a shiny Pokémon in the wild. The chart on Serebii reflects this chance as well. The odd bit is that the article on shiny hunting from The Pokémon Company seems to contradict these findings, implying that the shiny odds are guaranteed to be increased. A common theory is that this "chance of increased shiny odds" is due to a programming quirk and was not intended.

Breeding, however, is unaffected by this and the odds are as stated in this guide. Hopefully whatever is causing this inconsistency can be cleared up, but for now, breeding should be the best method for shiny hunting.

Re: Pokémon Fans Get 'Game Freak Lied' Trending As Sword And Shield Drama Intensifies Yet Again

Shepdawg1

Whatever the truth behind this whole mess is, a few things are clear to me.

1. Game Freak needs some transparency. Even if it's a bad reason, getting everything on the table should be priority number one.
2. A good portion of Pokémon fans seem to have completely forgotten how to be decent human beings. It's actually embarrassing for me to call myself a Pokémon fan when I see others acting so childish.
3. It's. A. Video. Game. They are inconsequential. They are temporary. There are much bigger issues that plague society and the world. Losing so much sleep and energy over one isn't healthy.
4. Comments are a mistake.

Re: We're Not Trying To Be The Next Disney, Says Nintendo President

Shepdawg1

Business-wise, Nintendo doesn't have a lot in common with Disney. To me, Nintendo's more like Disney in terms of the content they create (largely family friendly, universally appealing, high standards of quality, iconic characters, and the list goes on and on). And honestly, that's the content I love to see from both companies, so I'm all for that. Let's just hope Nintendo doesn't have a "live-action remake" phase like Disney is currently having...

Re: Fortnite "Ruined Our Child's Life", Claims Family At The Centre Of New Class-Action Lawsuit

Shepdawg1

Every game developer (especially free to play developers) wants to take measures to make sure their game is replayable. Essentially, the suit boils down to "We're bad parents, but we're not gonna admit that because that'd be responsible, so we'll conjure up this lawsuit to act like it's their fault and try to make some money while we're at it." I have no respect for parents who don't take the time to monitor what their kids are doing and just leave them with an iPad so they can have some peace and quiet.

Re: Pokémon Loser Ash Ketchum's Lifelong Dream Has Finally Come True

Shepdawg1

The title of this article is both infuriating and incorrect. Ash's dream is to be a Pokémon Master, and winning a league isn't the end all be all requirement of that dream. Whatever a Pokémon Master in his eyes is is honestly pretty vague. And calling him a loser is just there to be a catchy eye grab.

Am I overanalyzing an anime for children? Probably, but it wouldn't hurt to do it a bit more justice and research.

Re: Phew, Zelda: Link's Awakening Will Support Cloud Saves On Switch After All

Shepdawg1

@Joe-b My comment was meant more in the style of "I don't get why Nintendo is doing this".

To answer your question, saving to the cloud means that the save data is stored on a different computer than your own (the company servers). Saving to the cloud is often used as a backup save method in case your primary save location (your own computer) fails. In the case of Switch games, imagine you've put 50 hours into Breath of the Wild, and then your Switch breaks. You buy a new Switch and can link your account to the new one, but since all your save data is tied to the original console, you can never get it back, right? Normally, that would mean you'd have lost all 50 of those hours of playtime. However, with the cloud save, you can redownload the save data that was lost and pick up where you left off.

Re: The Persona Series Has Now Sold More Than 10 Million Copies Worldwide

Shepdawg1

It's nice and all. I just wish Atlus would port the main series Persona games to other platforms. If it's some sort of deal with Sony, I can understand, but a Persona 5 port would do amazingly well on the Switch given Joker's inclusion in Smash. Heck, I bought and played Persona 5 because of Smash, so imagine how many copies it would sell on Smash's console.

Re: Nintendo, Sony And Microsoft Will Disclose Loot Box Odds

Shepdawg1

@joey302 It's a type of microtransaction. Lootboxes typically house character skins, items, decals, and in extreme cases, better options for winning (looking squarely at Battlefront II). The big controversy around them is that you are paying real money for the chance to get an item you want, which you may not even get, and when all is said and done, you will likely be left with a lot of stuff that you may not have even wanted to begin with. The idea of lootboxes is to get you to keep buying them until you get what you want. It's basically gambling, except with intangible, digital goods.

Re: Nintendo, Sony And Microsoft Will Disclose Loot Box Odds

Shepdawg1

Seems fair. Loot Boxes are still a terrible monetization scheme (great for business, bad for consumer), but at least people will understand what they're getting into by buying them. And if I'm correct, all of Nintendo's mobile gacha games state what the odds are of receiving any given character or item.

Re: Review: Katana ZERO - A Razor-Sharp Action Platformer That Everyone Should Play

Shepdawg1

Not gonna lie: I disliked this game quite a bit. The time slowdown mechanic felt necessary to get past just about any room where the enemies have guns, which brought the already slow pacing to a grinding halt, the constant trial and error turned to frustration, the rewinds weren't really as satisfying to watch as they were advertised to be, the controls felt just a little too loose to do things accurately, and the story was poorly written, in my opinion.

This game is such a huge bummer to me because I wanted to like it. I will admit that the presentation is spot on, but everything else just fell flat.

Re: The Great Ace Attorney Receives Full 3DS Translation Thanks To Fans

Shepdawg1

@Zorox88 This is more in the vein of ROM patching. Piracy implies illegally obtaining a copy of the game. This run code on top of the existing game to change some assets. You need to hack your system to allow it to patch the translation over the game, but that doesn't necessarily mean the game needs to be pirated.
