It’s absolutely more about sales potential and the core gameplay being too simple for its own good, could have existed as a cheap download only series but Nintendo isn’t very interested in doing stuff like that so its dead in the water.
@Rpg-lover Give me a ballpark figure of what percentage you think of the Switch’s total user base is in the market for a pc handheld or already has one. That article is a joke; what it’s suggesting isn’t going to shift sales in any significant way towards those things. The way it brings up Unreal Engine 5 is hilarious too, considering it’s where good image quality and performance go to die even on much beefier hardware but uh oh, Switch 2 is in trouble if it suffers the same as the rest!
Who would have ever predicted this change with PEGI would screw over smaller devs while they turn a complete blinds eye to the insidious stuff big devs/publishers are doing. @Dr_Lugae Bingo.
Production valves in this for the animations are very high but it’s still under 10 minutes of content for 5 bucks compared to the hours of content added for free to Frontiers. @Mariotag You can just cheese it by buying them from Big. The final horizon version of the island is better anyway you it doesn’t have tokens to collect but it’s a more difficult experience.
“Statler and Waldorf were on hand to reference last year's "wrap it up" criticism ” Gotta love literal puppets being used for hollow self deprecating humor on this long corporate advertisement.
@DragotheKomodo
Sega is likely treating the idea of canon with Sonic now the way it’s typically treated in Japan, where it’s a loose concept where sub-material is often contradictory with the main part of the franchise and easily ignored by it when necessary. This means IDW and Prime can resemble the game canon and even be marketed as being the same as it for marquee value, but the actual game canon isn’t married to them beyond references and fodder for bad mobile game.
Even the Dark Beginnings short is subject to this as it does things like show part of the moon destroyed with a massive debris field, which is never shown in Shadow Generations and likely won’t be in future games while Ian Flynn will give bizarre non-answers when asked about it.
Sounds like he’s trying to sidestep the Mario comparisons that were rampant when the game released and might ramp up now with the game getting more publicity. The statement is kinda sad honestly basically saying all the PlayStation 3D platformers weren’t worthy of being a main inspiration and are instead more aesthetic and reference material compared to the meat of the game design being 3D Mario.
I’d be fine with a indie studio making the most budget PS2 or even PS1 game in existence if it still managed to capture the combat system and feel of the 3D games.
@PikaPhantom Yeah it’s a very annoying juxtaposition, they really should have toned it down especially with people being increasingly over characters that exist to be part quip and part lovingly awkward. A character can be allowed to to make quips without deflating tension or being some sorta self deprecating meta humor.
About what you’d expect but good to hear it confirmed anyway. “The game's director who apparently "wanted to make a generated dungeon game" I guess this is where the multiplayer focus came from if we assume the director was inspired by Warframe and its procedurally generated levels.
@boxyguy That and an unhinged rebalance that tosses out the awful limitations they’ve placed on a chunk of the cast so they can all be viable and competitive instead of letting a few rule the entire game.
Nintendo droughts don’t have to signify anything, people read too much into them especially with Switch I recall back in 2021 possibly even earlier about how one was happening because Nintendo was readying all their devs to release an onslaught of games for the mythical Switch Pro.
Sonic looks poorly thought out I’m surprised Sega would allow it not having his shoes in bot mode, looks like a happy meal toy. Tails clearly had a lot more care put into it even if he for seemingly no reason is wearing a diaper.
@Toastmaster This is the same rhetoric we had in the 2010s where mobile gaming was going to obliterate console gaming and Nintendo. Maybe the gazillion windows handhelds out there are different but one thing I know about Windows PCs is that getting a non X-input controller to work with the majority of games is a massive pain in the ass and most certainly doesn’t just work.
I like how a defining part of their beaten into the ground character design style is having mouths slightly agape, I don’t know if they intentionally want the characters in all their games to look completely interchangeable between each other but if so they nail it expertly.
@HammerGalladeBro It’s a combination of that, Nintendo Hire This Man and the Uncanny Valley. It’s probably what the show will be remembered for along with having an episode dedicated to perhaps the fastest dead game in the history of this medium.
Oh heavenly delight another game about parrying in a small frame window or you’ll eat ****, let me guess it has bullet hell spam too? At least it doesn’t have procedurally generated levels.
@Ultimapunch They do too but feel compelled to keep baiting fans with it, it’s basically a mystery box ploy at this point as it doesn’t really mean anything but people buy into it anyway.
The bubble is going to burst sooner or later on the flood of all these handhelds, there’s just simply too many of them with barely improved versions being tossed out an an hilarious rate all targeted at a much nicher audience than Switch.
Yes there’s a reason Nintendo had radically the sleeker Lite out in record time after the original model, it was basically a relic of the older era along with the early perception that the DS would be dominated by N64 ports but Nintendo swerved and went with a design aesthetic reminiscent of the iPods and MacBooks of the time that carried over into the Wii and focused on original games that utilized the hardware strengths rather than clunky N64 ports.
@LastFootnote People never learn this even beyond Gamefreak or Switch always thinking new hardware is gonna to magically cure problems that are ingrained in the developer or the engine they’re using and when they feel no market pressure they have little reason to change anything.
Dorito Pope finding a way to crown Fortnite or some other old GAAS trash who’s “sponsored” him enough, time to bring these awards back to their roots like the first VGAs in 2003 giving GOTY to Madden.
@Arkay The market is already clogged with endless windows handhelds and the steam deck that would be their competition, there’s no viable route for them to compete against Nintendo’s segment of the handheld market The best they can do is improve the experience for windows handhelds which is currently garbage. @Mana_Knight This is the result of the Xbox division being in disarray after the higher levels of MS recognized what they were doing was a lost cause that’s burning a whole lot of money, the mixed messaging particularly through anonymous sources was them panicking and trying to control the message and that’s ultimately failed.
Whatever sick aspirations this dude crashing down after he thought he achieved some great victory is one of the few feel good stories of the industry this year.
@batmanbud2 Money is why this stuff was easier when he was still alive I imagine. Vice City originally had Billie Jean and Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.
@AnonyQ I can see them having this caveat due to it likely vastly underperforming other Lego games without this. Sony is also desperate to push Horizon as a mega IP and view a project like this as an advertisement.
Absolutely not happening just like all the other things Sonic Team mentions wanting to do that never goes anywhere.
@TotalHenshin
The supposed great level design of this game is a joke, these claims have existed years before that fangame but I’ve never seen them explained in detail. It’s a really boring flat attempt at SA1 with a whole heaping of new annoying dull things, the fansites back in 2006 would call it “SA 1.5” but I don’t think that’s fair to SA 1.
Most games including Zelda will cheat the animation for this by making the sword just clip through the scabbed at a certain point but it’s usually so fast that most won’t notice this, it probably does give the impression that it’s not highly impractical and difficult to do in real life.
@Axecon They’re afraid to do anything like that now just look at Prime they marketed it as somehow being in the game canon despite it not being consistent with it, they’ve moved to the nebulous model of everything (games, idw comics, prime) except for the movies being part of the same canon no matter how inconsistent it is
@Lofoten Yeah anyone distorting reality like that is immediately suspect and there’s no shortage of people like for this game for a multitude of reasons like using it as bludgeon against a franchise they are unhappy with so all logic get’s tossed out the window.
Emulators wouldn’t be in as nearly as hot water as they are now without people like this guy, the gloating, arrogance and absolutely pirating games that they don’t own and encouraging others to do the same has incentivized Nintendo into escalating their actions. We had over 20 years of them barely doing anything like this beyond mostly going after rom sites.
There’s still constant stutter outside of 2D sections just look at the start of modern chemical plant, I think they possibly could have optimized it though but they instead choose to attempt to lock it at 30 and failed to properly do so.
@Uska They’ll have to keep adding cards and new ways to play like an expanded single-player, what they have now doesn’t cut and I’m sure a lot of players will drop it rather than attempt MP battles. I’ve gotten in just a few days 54 boosters and 142/226 of the current cards which includes a tons of rares including 3 EX Mewtwos without paying a cent, they’ll need a compelling reason to keep me around or even consider paying up.
I can see them designing oddness like that into the pack selection to increase engagement by tricking players into thinking there is a ritual to it. The offering rates tab very clearly shows what the actual probability is, there is no advantage to them for letting players easily game the system but they might like the idea of making players think they are so they’ll buy more packs.
Make something better and start small by focusing on on-rail arcade shooter gameplay without distractions and combine it with a fresher story with lots of space opera charm.
