Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - SNES Classic Mini Console

The European box art is both aesthetically pleasing and informative.

It’s perfect for a grandma looking for a Christmas present for her grandson: This Mario on Yoshi reminds her of the system she bought for her son decades ago, and he had so much fun.

It would also be regarded as greed if Capcom would demand over 100 euros. Capcom is a company with the primary reason for its existence being earning money. The fact that NS2 cartridges are so expensive is a tragedy for everyone, and compromises are required. Capcom decided to create a cheaper product with an almost same experience for the next ten years or so, and I respect that.

The article reminded me that the „Resident Evil Generation Pack“ exists, and I just ordered the box with 3 game-key cards. That model allows to lend the games to other players, and the total price of 80 euros is still fair. With cartridges, the manufacturing costs alone would easily exceed 30 euros, which is unacceptable for publishers like Capcom.

The „golden solution“ would be the use of cheap Switch 1 cartridges for Switch-2-only games, with the requirement of installation on the fast internal storage (or SD Express card).

Unfortunately, Nintendo decided against it. I see two reasons:

1) A more complicated product: With some cartridges, you have to download the game entirely (GKC), with some you have to install it from cartridge (NS1 cartridge), with some you can play it directly from cartridge (NS2 cartridge).

2) More important imo: NS1 cartridges can easily be extracted with modded Switch 1 systems. The problem of ROMs available several weeks before release would carry over to NS2.

The way forward are cheaper NS2 cartridges. I mean not only smaller capacities, but also lower costs for the existing 64 GB one. I think that Nintendo is actively working on that, because it is the publisher mostly affected.

I think it depends on the changes they made:

  • Creating a native Switch 2 software with implementations of features like DLSS, HDR and mouse support needs a lot of development. I‘d find it okay if we had to pay extra for this RDR upgrade (but I happily take it for free).
  • A patch with small changes on the Switch 1 code should be free! With that, they can still realise 1080p60 in both docked and handheld with better shadow quality and higher LoD, which is enough for most games.

Re: Multiple Switch Games Get Switch 2 Compatibility Fixes

@Serpenterror

Why shouldn’t Nintendo solve the issues for all games (it’s more like 13000 ones, according to MobyGames)? They know both platforms exceptionally well and can solve the fundamental problems of their emulation layer. With every fundamental problem identified and solved, a number of games will work.

The list of incompatible games should be significantly shorter than 1000 entries. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that one day, compatibility with every already released game was achieved.

Re: Poll: Have You Had Issues With The Ethernet Port On Switch 2's Dock?

Max_the_German

I had often problems with my old Switch 1 dock. It had problems to work properly with the USB Ethernet adapter. Last year, it didn’t recognise the adapter for several weeks, and I thought that its USB chip died. But then one day the Ethernet connection returned without changing anything.

So, maybe the reason for the Switch 2 dock issues is not the Ethernet hardware but the USB controller!

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Switch 2 Compatibility Update Released

Max_the_German

A quick fix is fine. But this game released this year, and everyone expects the announcement of a graphical update. But I can understand Nintendo:

Similar to the Switch 1 and its Wii U ports, Nintendo wants to save the Switch 2 Editions to be released over a period of several years, to always have something to close gaps in its release schedule.

I can’t play every game at the same time, so I‘m okay with this.

Re: Opinion: Third-Party Support For Switch 2 Is Already A Dream Come True

Max_the_German

I‘m disappointed that many games don’t properly use the capabilities of the graphics system. And no, I don’t talk about DLSS, I talk about 120 Hz and VRR in handheld mode. The CPU is performant enough to achieve 40 fps where PS4 runs a game with 30 fps. And even when these 40 fps are a bit shaky, VRR can smooth it out a bit or entirely. 30 and 40 fps are night and day!

And developers of multiplat games should design their games so that they run with 40 fps on Switch 2. The fact that Yooka-Replaylee is a 30 fps title on Switch 2 is just a shame.
