Re: EA Staff Are Reportedly Less Than Happy With Their Much-Hyped AI "Helpers"

@jojobar

I‘m working in R&D and not in engineering, so I don’t have your insight, and I totally believe in what you say. My impression about current AI progression is the same as yours, these models don’t seem to be the right basis to achieve AGI, if that is ever possible. But hey, usable LLMs are still less than 3 (!) years old, and there is so much time, technological and financial potential. Tell me one modern technology of the complexity of AI which was mature after 3 years. Between sending the first email in the world and finding „friends“ on Tinder with a swipe took much longer than 3 years.

In my profession, crawling through millions of scientific papers has never been this easy. Now you can find the hidden gems which never received the attention they deserve, just because the authors were not famous or the title was awkward. Students without much of coding experience can create stunning tools within a few days. AI is probably not that useful to make a good coder a very good one, but to make a bad coder a mediocre one, and in many cases that’s what is needed.

For game development, I think the big potential for AI is neither graphics nor world building, but helping to make a complex story or world system to make consistent. To make the story and interactions consistent in Baldur‘s Gate 3 was probably a painful task. AI will probably help you to manage this complexity. And AI could make NPC behaviour much more believable: In 20 years, people could look at Cyberpunk 2077 and wonder how we could enjoy this city with these dump puppets walking and sitting around.

Well, the first usable LLM was made public in November 2022, less than 3 years ago! This technology is still in its infancy and has several decades to become good, so don’t judge it based on today’s quality.

Many people around me start realising how useful it already can be to reduce annoying manual work and begin to adopt their workflow. As much as it is about technology, it’s about processes. Just give those people time to learn how to use AI for their own benefit.

Re: EA Is Diving Headfirst Into Generative AI With New Partnership

Using AI is okay for me, because I don’t expect anything else than kitsch. And kitsch is what 90% of new games out there are, and there are millions of people happy with them (I don’t play this sh*te).

But, please, don’t use the term „opening new creative frontiers“ in context of AI. That‘s a poor lie.

Re: Poll: So, Did You Get Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 For Switch?

Max_the_German

No, I played Galaxy 1 and 2 on Wii and was annoyed by the pointer controls in Galaxy 1 in 3D All-Stars. While pointer controls are not very important in Galaxy 1, they are crucial in Galaxy 2 for controlling Yoshi under time pressure, especially in the late- and post-game.

Because of that, I always found it reasonable to exclude Galaxy 2 from 3D All-Stars.

@ROMhaiku I find you explanation interesting and insightful. But what is the consequence? That games which appeal with their presentation to a big audience must also appeal to this audience’s wishes for easy accessibility? Or that niche games shouldn’t have a mass appealing presentation? I don’t think so.

There are films and books which are easy to watch/read but hard to understand and appreciate. And they also have their reasons to exist.
