But many studios were smaller before the pandemic. And with home entertainment booming (Animal Crossing as the most prominent example for video games), the number of employees in the industry grew. At the same time, AAA and AA games became more expensive to make. And now, international politics and the AI boom create price shocks, which sour the customers‘ buying mood.
The conclusion: There are too many studios and staff in this business, compared to what customers are willing to pay. The reduction in personnel is not finished yet.
But Microsoft on the other hand demonstrates how not to close studios, just a week after the announcement with trailer and all of the next, now probably dead game. „Selling“ studios in this climate are merely a (vidible) figleaf.
First Space Marine 2, and now Oblivion too. Switch 2‘s CPU is more capable than I expected, or the publishers want overly ambitious ports. Let‘s see what kind of stutterfest we will get!
Nintendo has not enough Switch 1 games in the making!
The sales numbers for consoles suffer from economic shocks. (Trump said that he finds inflation great!?)
There are almost 37 million Switch 1 systems in Japan, more than 154 million in the world.
The best-selling game in Japan last week was a Switch 1 title, which already sold better than the best Pokemon game in decades.
The only game from Nintendo for Switch 1 showed in the June Direct was Rhythm Heaven Groove, which was already revealed before.
Switch 1 still sells, despite no major game announcements.
Metroid Prime 4 was Nintendo’s last big hurray for Switch 1 (or it should have been). I imagine that in Kyoto, they are actively discussing which of the Switch 2 games in development could also be released on Switch 1.
Rhythm Heaven Groove being in its own „Switch 1“ field is a bad decision. Because more casual gamers could think that it won‘t run on Switch 2. Nintendo should have put it in the „Switch 1 + 2“ section, regardless of the technical details.
I find it generally weird that this game and Tomodachi Life haven‘t got Switch 2 versions! Is Nintendo lacking Switch 2 dev kits for itself?!
@JimNorman Oh, why are you presenting the games in the same order as presented in the show? There is almost no added value.
Please, please, consider doing this recap in the order of release date! This would really help to get a better picture of which games will get relevant in the upcoming months.
@TerribleTerabytes I used my eyes. In fact, I noticed it within the first second while watching on my iPhone. If you get used to 60 fps, it’s hard not to see the difference immediately.
@Yalloo I hope it’s worth it. I also paid 60 euros for Animal Well, and I still don’t get the frenetic appraisal it received from both players and critics.
Why don’t they offer a physical version day-one on this game‘s most important platform besides PC? As a title for both Switch 1 and 2, they could use cheap Switch 1 cartridges with 1 GB!
I will wait for the physical version, as I did with Silksong (still waiting) and Animal Well.
Compared to the plethora of games on display, the number of Switch games is still quite small imo, despite bringing Xbox Series S games to Switch 2 should be relatively simple and straightforward.
I first wanted to blame Nintendo for not providing enough dev kits. But the fact that Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6 were not announced for Switch 2, while the devs have experience with Persona 3 Reload, is desillusioning.
This release has a greater meaning. It means that Switch is becoming the primary platform for Final Fantasy, due to the popularity of the Switch in Japan.
The poor performance of FF16 must have been a wakeup call for SE!
Don‘t expect no downsides of this change. There are reasons for the original design, and probably not only manufacturing costs.
I suppose that the capacity of the exchangable batterie will be smaller, because the larger connectors, more userfriendly housing etc. will need additional space, which the Switch 2 probably won‘t have, so the battery itself has to shrink.
@OorWullie And having a different subjective opinion on a piece of art or entertainment is totally fine. Games were pretty boring if we could measure them by objective metrics.
Cross-play seems almost confirmed, but for framerate, I still have doubts. This sentence is more distracting than helping:
„Performance-wise, O’Hara tells me he has come away impressed with the Switch 2, suggesting that its performance is favorable compared to the other current-gen versions.“
@hamms Devs could just lower the minimum resolution an the target rendering time per frame. This would result in blurrier images, but as long as the CPU isn’t the limiting factor (which doesn’t seem to be the case here), that would increase the framerate to an almost stable 60 fps.
The required change is so small, it could be easily implemented and rolled out with a quick patch. But Capcom should then also offer a 40 fps and a 30 fps mode for those of us who want a higher image quality.
@RiasGremory You look quite confident about the technical quality of a game of which we have only seen a mainly cinematic trailer a year ago. Gameplaywise, I have not the slightest doubt about its high quality.
Sekiro would be a great addition to the Switch 2 library. Porting should be relatively low effort, using the upcoming port of Elden Ring as technical basis. And many Japanese gamers, who never bought a PlayStation, would love it!
FromSoft games are typically a technical mess. The only good results so far came from running the games on „overpowered“ hardware (I played the PS4 version of Elden Ring on PS5, not the PS5 version).
With both titles here being important show pieces for Nintendo, maybe they are the driver behind a prologued polishing phase.
U Deluxe has a worse reputation than it deserves. There’s a reason why it sold 19m copies on Switch. And the ones buying it are not only stupid casual gamers who don’t have a clue.
UE5‘s bad reputation isn‘t fully justified (except for its problems with loading in new world data).
Especially smaller and less experienced game developers activate all the features like Lumen (ray tracing), Nanite (automated LoD) and Virtual Shadow Maps. Plus MetaHuman, which results in demanding and uncanny human models like in MindsEye and Neo Berlin. These developers create something very complex they often can hardly handle and optimise (see MindsEye).
Experienced developers can make beautiful and performant games with UE5. Looking forward to see what miracles The Coalition and CD Projekt Red will create with Gears of War: E-Day and The Witcher 4 respectively.
Switch 2 Lite would have component costs which would result in an unacceptable price for a pure handheld for the target audience. We first need to see a die shrink, if it will ever come at all.
@hol_up I guess we will see a few more Switch 1 games from Nintendo in the next 18 months. There are Wii, Wii U and 3DS titles left which can be ported to Switch, like
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Yoshi‘s Woolly World, the Zelda remasters on Wii U, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Metroid: Samus Returns, Kirby‘s Extra Epic Yarn and other Kirby games, A Link Between Worlds, several Fire Emblem games, the list goes on.
The market potential for new games with 155 million Switch 1 systems is just too huge to ignore!

@Bunkerneath That‘s not the standard edition. The standard edition lacks the „Exclusive O-Sleeve“.
Re: Japanese Charts: Tomodachi Life Finally Slips From The Top Spot
Switch 1 games dominate. I think that Nintendo has the problem that almost no new Switch 1 games were announced.
In an era of more and more expensive new hardware, selling games for the existing 154 million Switch 1 systems out there is becoming really important.

Re: Nintendo Combats Scalpers With New Switch 2 Purchase Requirements In Japan
The Japanese-only Switch 2 model was way too cheap and is still too cheap, compared to what Nintendo could earn by selling a unit in other countries.
Now they have to introduce other mechanisms to lower sales.
Re: Japanese Charts: Switch 2 Sales Continue To Slip, But Tomodachi Life Holds The Newbies At Bay
My key-finding:
Nintendo has not enough Switch 1 games in the making!
Metroid Prime 4 was Nintendo’s last big hurray for Switch 1 (or it should have been). I imagine that in Kyoto, they are actively discussing which of the Switch 2 games in development could also be released on Switch 1.

Xenoblade Chronicles Switch 2 Edition, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Edition
That‘s hard to read and even not correct, it‘s NINTENDO Switch 2 Edition.
Please discuss at Nintendo Life how to make these titles more handy. I would prefer a solution like
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 NS2E
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (NS2E)
or even maybe
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (NS2)

I‘m a Soulsborne player, and my hightlight is that both Lies of P and Duskbloods are targeting 60 fps!

Great that FromSoft managed to run it at 60 fps (or at least target that mark)!

Re: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Revealed For Switch 2
@coolioam Switch 2 still has a CPU of the calibre of a PS4 Pro, which was hardly enough to provide 60 fps on MW3. MW4 looks much more demanding to me.
Re: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Revealed For Switch 2
@Solid_Python @AI-Generation
Regarding framerate and cross-play, I found this source:
https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/no-problems-to-report-infinity-ward-says-getting-cod-mw4-running-on-switch-2-was-pretty-smooth/
Cross-play seems almost confirmed, but for framerate, I still have doubts. This sentence is more distracting than helping:
„Performance-wise, O’Hara tells me he has come away impressed with the Switch 2, suggesting that its performance is favorable compared to the other current-gen versions.“
Favorable compared to PS5?!

„Right now we support crossplay between Switch 2 and the rest of the platforms. But we'll see at launch exactly where the mix ends up.“
Re: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Revealed For Switch 2
Since CoD 4 on PS3 from 2007, every CoD title has targeted 60 fps on the latest console generation. That is a staple of this series.
Will MW4 run with significant more than 30 fps on Switch 2? Probably not.
This will feel like a second class experience on Switch 2, similar to FC 2026.

Re: Elden Ring And The Duskbloods Still "Expected" To Release On Switch 2 In 2026
@RiasGremory You underestimate FromSoft‘s ability to misconfigure their games. I see no way that we will get Elden Ring with a somewhat stable 40 fps.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (16th May)

This „Star Fox Direct“ could have been the core of a regular Direct, with another minor game announcement and some third-parties.
Nintendo wants to sell us stuff, so it’s their responsibility to make good marketing.
After the very good marketing over the most of the lifetime of Switch 1, these „Nintendo Today Directs“ are a downgrade imo.
