Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (25th April)

As always, more Mewgenics and more Pokémon Champions. I clawed my way up to Master Ball tier in Ranked Doubles with a massive (and lucky) win streak. Maybe I'll see if I can get to Champion tier within the season's two remaining weeks, maybe I'll just move on to Ranked Singles.

Other than that, I'm right at the end of Mafia: The Old Country, so I'll finish that today. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that game yet, honestly. It's got a lot going for it, but at the same time it's got a lot wrong with it.

Edit: I just found out that to reach Champion tier I have to get into the top 300 trainers. Yeah, that ain't happening 🤣

@Moonlessky @RiaTheWitch You'd think that "Certain other issues related to networking and visual appearance during battles" would cover the resolution glitch. Ah well, maybe next patch.

I did play an hour or so earlier today after the update. I might have not been paying close enough attention, but I didn't notice any of the Pokémon suddenly moving at a vastly reduced framerate anymore, so that's something.

@Hinade Same here. I had absolutely zero experience with competitive Pokémon prior to Champions and I'm loving it, having put 50 hours in so far. In Ranked Doubles, I was languishing around Ultra Ball 3 and 2 for ages, but had a massive win steak last night and got up to Master Ball. I've probably peaked 🤣

Other than the usual Mewgenics and Pokémon Champions (I'm still languishing in Great Ball tier) I'm kind of at a loss when it comes to what I'll be playing next, because I finished South of Midnight last night and, my goodness gracious, I loved it. Below is the review I put on Steam immediately after finishing the game. It's not comprehensive or even particularly well written, but I think it sums up how I feel about South of Midnight:

South of Midnight has an immediate initial wow factor; the stop-motion style animation is cool and the visuals are extraordinarily pretty. Then I got to the platforming and puzzle solving, which are both inoffensively by the numbers. Then I got to the combat, which is slightly too stiff for my liking and not in the least bit remarkable. At this point, I wasn't sure how much of this game I would actually play.

I'm glad I carried on.

Some might argue that a gorgeous visual style or a fantastically told story that takes inspiration from Southern American folk tales shouldn't excuse the actual "game" parts of a game being so unremarkable or by the numbers. Hell, up until about 20 minutes ago I might very well have agreed with you. But, my god, South of Midnight is exponentially more than the sum of its parts.

Could the story have been told as a film or a TV series? Absolutely it could have, but by being a game - having you guide Hazel through the environments she must traverse and discovering the fates of the various mystical creatures and human inhabitants of Prospero - South of Midnight's tales of heartbreak, suffering, regret and love are so, so much more powerful than they would have been if you were merely passively observing them.

Special mention also has to go to the soundtrack. Every piece of music and every song is exceptional, whether it's just setting the tone for a scene or going full-on musical theatre to further bring the tragic stories of characters like Two Toe Tom, Huggin' Molly and others to life. I'm glad Xbox Game Studios started just giving out the digital deluxe extras with the standard edition of the game, because this is a soundtrack that I'll want to listen to again without question.

I could probably count on one hand the number of games that have made me so invested in a narrative or feel for characters as much as South of Midnight did, or games that are as beautifully animated, or games that are just such a joy to experience. South of Midnight is one of the best games I've played in a very, very long time.

@DadJKP I'm sorry, but I don't see how heterosexual couples who choose not to have children are inherently or automatically immoral or selfish.

My wife and I are in our 40s, and decided nearly 20 years ago that we shouldn't have children. We're both autistic, have numerous other neurological and mental disorders and I'm visually impaired. We have a hard enough time looking after ourselves, let alone dealing with the responsibility of keeping a completely dependent being fed, clothed and healthy. And by not having children of our own, we have been able to devote more time to 1. keeping ourselves more mentally healthy, and 2. assisting various siblings and in-laws with their children if they need us to.

Look, I respect your right to hold your own personal beliefs on this or any other subject, but declaring those beliefs as normalcy or contrary beliefs and/or actions as immoral? If something isn't actively harming someone else, as far as I'm concerned, it's as moral as anything can be.

@Princess_Lilly I think so, yes. It's a game that's supposed to celebrate community and the relationships those people have with each other. Not everyone is heterosexual or identifies with the gender they "should" (big, big, BIG air quotes) be. By not acknowledging the many differing identities of its potential player base and just the human race in general, the game would be doing its very premise a massive disservice.

Re: 21 Best Switch 2 Games Under $25

Some great games on that list. Dave the Diver is a personal favourite of mine.

Although... Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, huh? Slim pickings? 😏

@solarwolf07 I didn't get on with Hollow Knight, but I fully acknowledge that it's an impeccably made game. Maybe I'll give it another go someday.

Re: Video: Pokémon Champions 'World Overview' Trailer Released

Markatron84

Cool that the Pokémon Company couldn't spring for voice acting on that short cinematic trailer. It wouldn't surprise me if in the next Pokémon Direct, they do away with the voiceovers altogether and Tsunekazu Ishihara just holds up cue cards 🤣

@UpsideDownRowlet I hope he does too. Kane didn't, and that was really disappointing.

Re: Rumour: Pokémon GO May Soon Render Auto Catchers Obsolete

Markatron84

If it's something I can switch on or off, having that functionality during community days - which invariably happen while I'm in work - would be useful, but any other time I'd prefer to not have something automatically throwing my PokéBalls with reckless abandon. I'm all for it automatically spinning PokéStops, though.

@Spider-Kev @-wc- I feel like the reporting and attitude of Hookshot as a whole have been on a slippery slope for a while.

I'm hesitant to point fingers again, because they seem genuinely uninterested in taking the feedback or accepting accountability. The last time people en masse expressed their complaints over questionable reporting and laughable editorialising ended in a combo of ignorance and hiding behind the old unconstructive feedback arguement.

Even the constructive and civil discussion on the topic has resulted in the last few messages being completely ignored.
