Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (24th January)

I'm chipping away at Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which I'm enjoying but my god is it difficult. I feel like there's a specific strategy that's tantamount for success in each mission, and if you don't hone in on that strategy from turn one then you'll be decimated.

Other than that, I started Gotham Knights a few days ago and that game is way better than everyone said it was. It's no Arkham Origins/Asylum/City/Knight, but what is? The only thing I'm not really liking is the whole gear system; it feels superfluous and obviously a remnant of the game originally being intended as a live-service. I'm enjoying the game overall though.

I finished up Doom: The Dark Ages and Mario & Luigi: Brothership a few days ago. I then made a start on Sonic Frontiers but that game is hot garbage and I gave up on it last night. So the weekend will be spent playing Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (my first time playing an Advance Wars game), Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Helldivers 2.

@JohnnyMind I just this minute finished Brothership. I don't get the general dislike people have for this game.

The only two things I personally found wrong with it were, 1. The writing isn't as funny and/or sharp as past games (from what I remember), and 2. There are certain sections that could've been trimmed down a bit.

Besides those two gripes it's a great game 👍

I don't get the hate over the soundtrack either @MeloMan

@Galaxy2IsTheGOAT I'm not saying you need to; just that games get updates to - for example - improve performance or fix bugs.

Again, I'm not saying you need to connect, but I was just curious why you wouldn't, that's all. You do you 🙂

On the subject of connecting a Switch to the Internet, I'm surprised that nobody has chimed in with "STABILITY!!!".

Going through the comments months after the list's initial publication is fascinating. It's funny seeing which games made it to #1 through the months and how there was usually somebody who thought it was utterly blasphemous.

I loved Donkey Kong Bananza - best 58 hours I ever spent with a game - but I'll be honest, I expected it to be much lower on the pecking order. I feel like people focused more on the fact that Nintendo launched this instead of a new 3D Mario game and less on how absolutely bloody amazing a game it actually is.

Good on you, DK. Beat your chest with pride.

How are Bethesda games so popular? I mean, really. Look, I've enjoyed Fallout games but, let's be honest: they look, play and run like utter arse and have more bugs than an insectarium. In fact, the only Bethesda (Game Studios) game I've played that felt good to play and ran at a decent and consistent framerate was Fallout 4, and that's only because I was running it on a PC with an i9 and a 4080 in it.

@FlyingDunsparce

Like even if we accept that costumes get their own character slot, that still leaves them in a completely random order with actual characters randomly mixed in with them.

You can press a button - either X or Y, I forget which - and it'll group each character and all their costumes in order.

I agree that it's still a mess though. Selecting a character should just bring up a sub-screen with all their costumes.
