I'm chipping away at Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which I'm enjoying but my god is it difficult. I feel like there's a specific strategy that's tantamount for success in each mission, and if you don't hone in on that strategy from turn one then you'll be decimated.
Other than that, I started Gotham Knights a few days ago and that game is way better than everyone said it was. It's no Arkham Origins/Asylum/City/Knight, but what is? The only thing I'm not really liking is the whole gear system; it feels superfluous and obviously a remnant of the game originally being intended as a live-service. I'm enjoying the game overall though.
I wouldn't expect the Switch 2 Edition of New Horizons to sell that well. Surely at this point they'll sell more of the upgrade pack than the Switch 2 Edition itself?
I've not played Final Fantasy VII - in fact, I've played very few FF games - but I adored both Remake and Rebirth. I expect that anyone who played the original will get even more out of their stories than I did, but they definitely stand on their own.
I finished up Doom: The Dark Ages and Mario & Luigi: Brothership a few days ago. I then made a start on Sonic Frontiers but that game is hot garbage and I gave up on it last night. So the weekend will be spent playing Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (my first time playing an Advance Wars game), Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Helldivers 2.
@JohnnyMind I just this minute finished Brothership. I don't get the general dislike people have for this game.
The only two things I personally found wrong with it were, 1. The writing isn't as funny and/or sharp as past games (from what I remember), and 2. There are certain sections that could've been trimmed down a bit.
Besides those two gripes it's a great game 👍
I don't get the hate over the soundtrack either @MeloMan
@JohnnyMind I should probably have a look at the Paper Mario games as well, as from what I hear the series' battle mechanics are similar to Mario & Luigi. The only one I've played is the one on Wii (Super Paper Mario?).
@JohnnyMind I feel like the past ones I played (all of them, except Paper Jam, which I never got round to) were shorter. Maybe I'm just misremembering. It is a cool game though; the Mario & Luigi gameplay will never get old for me and I love the art style and the animation on the Bros. I'll definitely be seeing it through to the end.
On the subject of Mario & Luigi: Brothership, can anyone tell me when the game plans to end? Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying it, but it's felt like I was nearing the end on two separate occasions now, only for it to keep going. It's like Persona 5 Royal all over again.
@Galaxy2IsTheGOAT I'm curious; why won't you connect your Switch to the Internet? I understand the desire to only buy physical games, but by not connecting to the Internet you're denying yourself updates that improve those games.
Going through the comments months after the list's initial publication is fascinating. It's funny seeing which games made it to #1 through the months and how there was usually somebody who thought it was utterly blasphemous.
I loved Donkey Kong Bananza - best 58 hours I ever spent with a game - but I'll be honest, I expected it to be much lower on the pecking order. I feel like people focused more on the fact that Nintendo launched this instead of a new 3D Mario game and less on how absolutely bloody amazing a game it actually is.
Making a noise on social media makes the biggest difference of all.
Oh, it absolutely does, which is why anyone commenting on Nintendo's social media likely had infinitely more impact on Game Key Cards than someone commenting on here did. Then again, I'm one of those people who's sick of hearing about it, so I'm probably biased.
Booooo to everyone who complained about it in Nintendo Life comment sections where it would have no effect on anything. And well done to anyone who complained to the relevant people through the relevant channels 😉
@gojiguy this is the worst take on Vampire Survivors I've ever heard/seen. It's not even a hot take; it's a take that was left to fester on a sun-baked Nevada highway for weeks on end with the odd 18-wheeler further flattening it in between coyote gnawings.
Vampire Survivors is as easy or as hard as you want to make it.
@Serpenterror I wouldn't bet against an X-Men retro collection coming at some point. I can see Marvel wanting to really push the X-Men once Doomsday and Secret Wars are out.
Props to Nintendo for not being afraid to put mediocre games on NSO. Wario World is far from good, but if Nintendo wants the service to truly represent the Gamecube's library, it's got to be there.
How are Bethesda games so popular? I mean, really. Look, I've enjoyed Fallout games but, let's be honest: they look, play and run like utter arse and have more bugs than an insectarium. In fact, the only Bethesda (Game Studios) game I've played that felt good to play and ran at a decent and consistent framerate was Fallout 4, and that's only because I was running it on a PC with an i9 and a 4080 in it.
Like even if we accept that costumes get their own character slot, that still leaves them in a completely random order with actual characters randomly mixed in with them.
You can press a button - either X or Y, I forget which - and it'll group each character and all their costumes in order.
I agree that it's still a mess though. Selecting a character should just bring up a sub-screen with all their costumes.
I sincerely hope that Mina turns out well and that Yacht Club doesn't fall on hard times. From what I played of the demo, the full game should deliver the goods and then some; let's just hope it gets the sales it deserves.

Yep. That's bad alright.

@PinderSchloss I know, it's ridiculous. If there's one thing Nintendo Life knows how to do, it's flogging a dead horse.
Re: PSA: Switch Game Vouchers Won't Be Sold After January 2026
@Galaxy2IsTheGOAT I'm not saying you need to; just that games get updates to - for example - improve performance or fix bugs.
Again, I'm not saying you need to connect, but I was just curious why you wouldn't, that's all. You do you 🙂
On the subject of connecting a Switch to the Internet, I'm surprised that nobody has chimed in with "STABILITY!!!".
Re: PSA: Switch Game Vouchers Won't Be Sold After January 2026
@Spider-Kev that's the opposite of what I said to do! You're such a rapscallion.
Re: PSA: Switch Game Vouchers Won't Be Sold After January 2026
@Spider-Kev I'm pretty sure you're right. Don't quote me on that though.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (10th January)
On Switch 2, I am 31 hours into Mario & Luigi: Brothership and will be hammering that some more. Other than that, I'm playing Doom: The Dark Ages.

@TripleJump I'm sorry to hear that. I would be absolutely distraught if that happened to me.
Re: Nintendo Renews Trademarks For 3DS And Wii U Games
OK, so Mike Odyssey is clearly an idiot. Nintendo's not going to do a port or re-release of Ultra Smash on Switch 2 for two reasons:
1. It's an almost universally disliked entry in the series.
2. Mario Tennis Fever literally launches next month.
