I suspect part of this decision is that the discourse around the initial performance issues of the Switch 2 edition of Hitman WoA hit their sales numbers.
Given that they are still adding new missions to that game years down the line I have no doubt this team has a long term commitment to First Light including the Switch 2 version.
@Elock If you played one of the older ones and found it awkward, I did too but the recent trilogy is amazing.
This to me looks like Hitman with more story and character focus with more action set pieces and vehicle missions.
I'm confident in the game, everything I have seen looks like a good marriage of the hitman gameplay and the more linear set pieces of older bond games and Uncharted that I think is ideal for this IP. The Switch 2 delay and lack of footage of this version does concern me though.
@arty77 Plenty of reasons but to fight fire with fire... Because they are predominantly console gamers and haven't invested in PS5/XSeries hardware. Maybe because they keep buying up studios, pressuring them to make ill fitting games for their strengths and then cancelling their games and firing the staff?
Switch 2 eating good on high profile 3rd party games this year! Dispatch, Resi 7-9, Pragmata FF7R, Indy, Bond(shame about the delay). Genuinely can't keep up ⭐
Ok Game Key Cars haters. I'm expecting you to come out in force for this one because if a big IP, highly acclaimed, uncompromised port on full cartridge can't sell gangbusters on the Switch 2 then your grumbling achieves nothing XD
If Rebirth looks and runs at least as good on Switch 2 as base Remake did on PS4 then that's enough for me! Delighted to see I can try it for myself due to the demo!
I've always felt like Metroid could absolutely work as a live action movie. It's steeped in movie inspiration anyway. But it only works if they don't try and go for the broadest appeal possible. It needs to be tense and claustrophobic and not afraid to have stints of Samus alone against antagonists. The aliens need to be unpleasant and scary. It would be great if we felt like we were in the visor ourselves without being gimmicky.
The final girl trope works fine here. Send Samus on a mission with GF Troopers. Kill off or incapacitate them gradually as the film progresses. Make her simultaneously badass and resourceful but vulnerable. Mercury Steam have been doing a great job with this balance.
Looks like Switch 2 sales are very healthy. Glad to see the success of Pragmata and meaningful Switch 2 numbers there.
@Itsashame Haha, I know exactly what they mean but it's a little harder to quantify.
Gameplay and systems driven, score chasing mechanics, numbers getting thrown about on screen, big shoot ups, regular boss battles against giant enemies. Basically unashamedly full of video game tropes and design language that are second nature to gamers but would probably be alien to non gamers. The direct antithesis of a minimal UI, cinematic storytelling driven game that aims to be grounded and realistic.
The 3D Zelda games have always done a great job of creating rich immersive worlds full of interesting cultures, individuals and history. The linear plot synopsis might not often be that exciting but I would not have fallen in love with this series if it's world wasn't so rich.
Obviously the best games are ones where the marriage of the different comprising art forms are all working together. For me the worst entries in the series are the ones that do little to expand on the world or have minimum narrative effort. Good gameplay alone often feels like a hollow experience to me.
@TheRazor don't know why I'm getting into a Star Wars debate on a Nintendo site about a Bong game but...Andor is better than everything else since the original trilogy and doesn't use those characters! I'd also argue that over adherence to classic characters severely hobbled the sequel trilogy (definitely not it's only fault). Quality is based on the artistic vision, craft and performances. I'm a lifelong Bond fan and completely fine with a female led '007' project. Calling them Jane Bond and acting like it's the same character would be weird but it's not like there is a rational way to argue that the films have featured the same individual over 60 years .
@Hwatt It's IO Interactive! Rest easy my friend this game will be great. It might excel in stealth more than all out combat but this is a dream partnership of studio and IP.
@Ryu_Niiyama Other than Casino Royale they finished adapting the books decades ago. They've been doing original stories since then. The newest film had a prominent female 00 agent but the series rarely spends much time on other 00 agents.
I loved the idea of these games as a kid but by the time I had the means of playing them I'd heard enough negativity to stay my hand. Maybe I'll finally take the plunge.
Played the Guard demo, and enjoyed the animated prologue on YouTube. I'd started to think I was missing out but this comment section suggests otherwise.
As someone who appreciates the Splatoon franchise but hasn't really clicked with it the most interesting things here are the price and date. I wonder if this started out as NS2 edition content that grew beyond its original scope and ended up being something experimental quite similar to Bowser's Fury.
The disparity in the comments section is why this series has been so dormant. There are multiple schools of preference but so many people are unwilling to compromise on what the series should be. Personally I think they had something cooking with Command and feel that could be built into something special. I'm just not going to buy a £60+ star fox game if the campaign is several hours with some divergence. I also think Kid Icarus Uprising is a superior and under explored gameplay template.
I could see a meaningful sequel if they utilised Galaxies gravity effects more. Although potentially you just end up with Monument Valley at that point.
I'm not clamouring for more to be honest. As charming and well designed as the game is I think I need more motivation and characterisation than 'villain steal maguffin,...track down and fight' repeat x 3 to endear me to a game.
I'm getting very excited about how close we are getting to this juggernaut 7/10 movie! Given the attached writers I can't see it being better than that despite it being a labour of love by Wes and Nintendo.
Fortune's Weave is the only annoynced 1st party game I've been hyped for this year so far. Art direction and setting look like a return to form.
Hope we get some date announcements soon!
I recognised some stills from the trailer but this was very off my radar. The restricted pallete helps to make this stand out along with the greater evel of darkness. Oh and music from Disasterpiece!? Ok now we're cooking.
Yes, gaming has gotten kind of exorbitantly expensive what with the cost of living crisis and yes $80 is a lot. This is however a Game of the Year winner with over a 100 hours of content and a massive expansion which was also so celebrated it became the first expansion to qualify for GOTY awards.
Are Switch 2 owners getting a worse deal than other platforms? Maybe? As far as I am aware the main issue here is that there is no option to buy the base game at the lower price and get the expansion later. So they haven't lowered the barrier to entry. The quality and volume on offer here for that price though is definitely not that egregious.
Not at all surprised. My most anticipated game of the year along with Fire Emblem but we hadn't seen any footage of this running on Switch 2 yet so it didn't seem like it was round the corner!
Expecting this to be merch a Japan only concert and maybe some Monster Hunter skins but I'd be happy just to get an in depth interview about their plans for the sequel.
@anoyonmus Seems an odd choice to me. It's a visual novel with turn based combat. The only necessary update I could see them needing is made redundant by the docked mode override that Nintendo added.
I don't think we've seen Switch 2 footage of 007 first light yet. While it's not a thrilling 1st party window for me the number of 3rd party bangers is more than making up for it.
Oh I wonder if this leak is the reason they revealed the suprise Mario Galaxy movie inclusion. Maybe they wanted to get ahead of the reveal being outside their control?
I have mixed feelings about this information being leaked overall. That said I am very intrigued to get an idea of the scope of both these projects
Was planning on getting a PS5 the next time they went on sale. Guess that's not happening... @Nep-Nep-Freak rooting for you bud. I imagine Nintendo want to grow the install base as much as possible before bumping up the price so I can't see this being a problem timeline wise!
Imagine if he isn't though and this is just a massive fake out to everyone seeing this on release day (April 1st). Ngl, It's made me much more curious, but I'm still fairly sure this film is going to be a mess of empty calories.
@Picola-Wicola I'd say the first half is MORE intense, but there is still quality challenge in the second half. It feels more like the original games by the end. I found theore weapon options I had the more in control I felt. Jack Baker is pretty relentless.
Everyone should play Resi 4. I love the Wii version specifically and would argue it's the best use of the controller outside of Motion+ (that's subjective and likely my nostalgia though so play it wherever you can).
If you are into games you've almost certainly picked up enough context for the series in general to not need to start from the beginning.
I just finished 7 and see no reason you couldn't start there but it differently intense.
I played it on a base PS4 and loved the experience. These games require a lot from you but I don't think the pace of combat requires more than 30FPS. This is something that clearly effects other people far more than me though.
I was going to make some flippant comment about how it was obviously selling better on ps5 because there were loads more of them out there but WOW the Switch 2 is gaining on PS5 fast!!
Wow, Dennis Durkin sounds like a real piece of work.
I understand that in big expensive productions there needs to be push and pull between creative vision and financial realities but this sounds unbelievably rotten.
Can't make up my mind here. Art style is gorgeous and the emphasis on experimentation and discovery around species is really appealing. On the flip side though the marketing is very child orientated and it looks pretty simple. Fingers crossed it gets reviewed well.
@rjejr I mean, I completely agree Clair Obscura would have been a bigger finale than Blue Prince but I also just think that is a core direct level announcements. Baffling that Kena wasn't included though, fantastic game!
@rjejr That's really awesome that these directs are full family viewing for you! Blue Prince was exactly the one more thing we were hoping for so sorry if I somewhat pounced on your comment. What would have been the case case announcement in your house?
I love this game. Delighted to see it coming to new platforms and that there is a sequel underway. Shout out to the composer Theophany who did a couple of albums of outstanding re-arrangements of Majora's Mask (Terrible Fate).
My ideal would be to do gen V style but include returning Mon only if they have either a new regional variant for part of the evolutionary line or a new evolution. That way every returning mon is exciting again.
@rjejr Sorry but this is an objectively wrong opinion XD
It was unlucky to come out the same month as Clair Obscura which went on to completely dominate the airwaves both that month and at the end of year award season. This would have won a lot more game of the year awards otherwise. It's the 10th highest rated game on Opencritic from last year (9th if you exclude TotK) and one of the only big indies missing from Switch 2. I probably sound like an ass but this is a huge win.
