This is great for Metroid fans. Would be nice if they added Metroid Zero Mission as well, then people could choose whether to play that or the original NES version of Metroid I. The Metroid II: Samus Returns 3DS Remake should also get ported to Switch imo. Then we’d have great options to play the whole 2D series all in one place.
It really is time for a new 3D Bomberman game. Bomberman 64 was awesome and special because many of the levels had some verticality to them not often seen in the series, especially in Battle Mode.
Bomberman 64/Hero/Generation/Jetters/Land... Konami please make a new expansive, comprehensive entry along those lines.
In the meantime the NSO N64 App would be a great place for some of those Bomberman titles, heck even Bomberman '94/Mega Bomberman would be great on the NSO Genesis App or Super Bomberman 1 - 5 on the NSO Super Nintendo App, especially since I don't think 3 - 5 were never officially released in North America. This is a great opportunity to add some value to all of those apps and the online subscriptions.
All of these NSO Apps are neglected by Nintie and leave so much to be desired because of the potential imo smh. Combine the platforms into one Nintendo Switch Archives App, improve the emulators have much of the features that have long been a staple of the free ones online for decades now. And most of all, we need more frequent, quality & voluminous drops. Do better beloved Nintendo!
Still waiting for this to go on sale in the Eshop to check it out. Not my usual type of game, but I like the art style and seemingly chill Japanese countryside vibes. Hope it goes on significant sale sometime this year.
@LikeWhoa my thoughts exactly. Would've been great if Nintendo improved the games with more colour at least especially since fans have already done it online for most of them ages ago now smh.
Fan improvements, options, translations etc. are accessible assets that should be considered with these releases (whlie contacting, acknowledging and/or compensating the modders), or Nintie could just improve these things themselves.
And for the purists these changes could just be another option/filter.
Really enjoyed Kate's writing style and the charm & personality imbued in the articles & features. Also Kate's ability to generate decent articles out of obscure or random topics/thoughts was a unique skill set I'm sure will be sorely missed on this site going forward especially during the often dry news periods. You will be missed Kate! Good luck & thank you for the time!
Love to hear it. Square/Squaresoft/Enix/Square Enix/Squeenix is among my favourite game developers/publishers of all time and I love their return to supporting Nintendo with the Switch almost like they did in the SNES era.
Remasters and Remakes are cool, but I'd also like new games too. That being said it's nice that people who missed out or long to play modernized versions of classics on more easily accessible current platforms get a chance to play these gems.
As for my Wishlist of Square Remasters/Remakes and/or New Entries? :
Threads of Fate
Vagrant Story
Brave Fencer Musashi 1 & 2
Super Mario RPG
Xenogears
Final Fantasy XIII Collection
Bahamut Lagoon
Final Fantasy Tactics
Valkyrie Profile
Dragon Quest 1 - 10 (not the crappy mobile ports)
Mario 3-On-3 Hoops
Mario Sports Mix
Chrono Trigger/Cross/Break
Secret of Evermore
Ehrgeiz
Fortune Street
GO Games (i.e. Tomb Raider/Hit-Man GO)
Legacy of Kain (even though Crystal Dynamics/Eidos sold to Embracer- let Square do it)
Hopefully Square can keep up their current output (it's been pretty impressive tbh) whilst maintaining decent levels of quality (with maybe some even becoming new classics like their old titles of yore).. all while also satisfying their usual astronomical internal sales projections.
Love Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move. I've definitely been one of those people requesting a new game on Switch. I'd even said it could work great as a " vs. 99" free-to-play type of game (similar to Tetris, Pacman & Mario 35 [RIP]) to mix things up.
So I'm happy the series is coming back! I just hope it's not too cutesy, gimmicky or light. I'm hoping for a comprehensive, extensive full experience- especially when it comes to varied online multiplayer, cosmetics and customization options and unlockables. That being said, the price also needs to be right because I don't know if Puzzle Bobble feels worth a full-priced game in today's times tbh. Depends on the final experience and content.
Sidenote: In 4 Player Co-Op (hopefully also online), where are the walls?? Some of the best gameplay for me came from tricky, risky ricochet shots.. but if the space is all open how does that happen? I hope those are still in there and the game has a good deal of diverse challenges. Also, It's a minor point, but I liked it better when they used the wheeled machine contraption to launch balls rather than tossing them themselves. It would be cool if they had a cosmetic skin that featured the styles of some of the older entries.
I really don’t care much about this man, arcade DK or high scores, but this whole saga of a liar being caught yet still burrowing deeper in said lie is somewhat riveting regardless of not being actually invested in the outcome. Intriguing stuff lol.
Octopath Traveler 2 & Zelda TOTK would be great and welcome additions to that list Nintendo (yes I know they’re not publishing this Octo entry this time, but still). I’d snag a pair of Game Vouchers and redeem them on those this year for sure if so.
The Game Vouchers should’ve never went away. And tbh they should never expire, especially when Nintendo doesn’t do many Directs to let you know what’s upcoming and when for certain in the coming year.
They’re only good value if you tend to buy first-party games at launch (or when they are still full price- and only for the usual full retail price games, not the ones that launched lower than usual i.e. Nintendo Switch Sports, Clubhouse Games or Wario Ware etc.), but I tend to wait for sales often now due to an already large backlog to work through.. so I likely wouldn’t get vouchers too often anymore.
Now that they’re back for NA I’ll probably pick up a pair though perhaps if they add their upcoming releases as well.. because I know I’ll get Zelda TOTK at launch and I anticipate a new Mario game within the next year too so it’d probably be more of a safe bet and worth it.
Some Other Smash Bros Ultimate (non-fighter) Continued Support Wishes:
I think it's time they got a bit more wacky or creative with the Smash Tourney events. They should implement some Custom Smash elements into the tourney events like Mega size, Fast speed, Light/Heavy weight or Metal body etc. to mix things up and keep it fresh imo. Some of the spirit battle conditions make for more interesting, varied fights than just highlighting a specific item or set of characters.
Also, new spirits and spirit battles would be cool, but the trophies from past Smash's were better. Granted they were full 3D models which I'm sure is a chore to render for each entry (especially with Ultimate having so many Spirits) so I understand the decision to just make them 2D artwork. However more importantly, I reference that to say I miss the background information they used to have though (some spirits & assist trophies I have no idea what they are or what games they are from)... it was like having a cool random digital video game encyclopedia. Wish they added that again.
Also also, Random needs to be added as a character selection to Online Smash & tournaments (and the true selection shouldn't be revealed until the match starts and should continue to be different every match) I like mixing things up and variety when I play.
I’ve long hoped there’d be more Smash Single Player DLC in the form of a new Adventure mode or even just a reskinned World of Light map. I’ve since given up that hope.
Damn. I kinda miss when E3 was something to look forward to with all the big players coming out with their heavy hitters and somewhat competing in one space and time- yet still being an overall hopeful celebration of gaming and what’s to come. It was like mid-year Gaming Christmas with all the excitement, surprise & attention at one point.
Digital presentations are cool and perfectly acceptable (especially with the dearth of public-facing charming and/or quirky high-level gaming execs for Live Shows i.e. Reggie, Mr. Iwata, Kaz Hirai w/ Ridge Racer etc.), but I wish they’d all at least commit to placing them or showcasing something during E3 in addition to still keeping their own marketing schedules throughout the year. It’s not the same without the Big 3 console makers. Hope E3 proper comes back eventually with all of them fully participating at some point soon! Don’t DiE3!
The Game Vouchers should’ve never went away. And tbh they should never expire, especially when Nintendo doesn’t do many Directs to let you know what’s upcoming and when for certain in the coming year. It’s good value if you tend to buy first-party games at launch, but I tend to wait for sales often now due to an already large backlog to work through.. so I likely wouldn’t get vouchers too often anymore.
If they come back soon for NA I’ll probably pick up a pair though because I know I’ll get Zelda TOTK at launch and I anticipate a new Mario game within the next year too so it’d probably be more of a safe bet and worth it.
I mean they’re are so many that come to mind. But a few unexpected, underrated standout Video Game musical pieces that went hard out of nowhere I’d say are:
Battletoads (Pause Screen beat)
Sonic Adventure 2 (Knuckles & Rouge stages, that rapper should come back for more Sonic games)
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (Wanna take you for a riiiideee!)
Killer Instinct (It’s A Jungle)
And last but not in the least, least..
Sonic Racing R (everybody Superrr Soniccc Racingggg theme)
I’m mildly interested in trying this Advance Wars collection out, but the original GBA pixel art style was so much more endearing than this plastic toy aesthetic in the remake at least visually. Hopefully they’ve improved it since the long delays. If so I may give it a try… probably on sale though.
The only thing missing from the US Boxart is the film border on the Japanese cover which really fits the motif of the game well, but the NA box still the best looking of the bunch due to the vibrant colour and better background art.
On a related note, Viewtiful Joe definitely needs a remastered collection (including Red Hot Rumble) as well as a new entry in Switch asap please Capcom!
Remasters and Remakes are cool, but I'd also like new games too. That being said it's nice that people who missed out or long to play modernized versions of classics on more easily accessible current platforms get a chance to play these gems.
As for my wishlist of Square Remasters/Remakes and/or New Entries? :
The best parts of Sonic Adventure were Knuckles & Rouge's Adventures for me. I'd love a game of their own just flying around searching for Emerald pieces with snazzy, smooth, jazzy, funky, trance, rap vibes playing in the background like in Sonic Adventure 2.
That being said I'd gladly take a Sonic Adventure 3 in a heartbeat.
Imo it kind of looks like a Newgrounds flash game from back in the day. I loved Newgrounds back then, but not sure I'd pay for many of those games on my console now though.
Cuphead & Celeste in recent memory. But both somehow strike this amazing magical balance between frustration and accomplishment when you were just about to call it quits. At least that was my experience which despite being frustrated at times ended up being a positive one.
Negative frustration would be a number of games that I decided weren't for me due to unfairness or difficulty- that difficulty usually just being a function of being able to put the requisite trial & error time in to 'git gud'.
I agree with Kate on Ori 1, definitely too many spikes in some areas and Hollow Knight can definitely get frustrating especially with the platforming near the end (but it's still an amazing experience). And Axiom Verge lack of a good map frustration comes to mind but I finished both games still.
These days if I'm frustrated I'm likely moving on to something else. Too much backlog and I mostly play games now to relax more than overcome massive challenges tbh.
It’s an interesting question and premise because of the Switch being a Hybrid Console..
A) If you look at it from a Home Console perspective, Nintendo has rarely ever done a true sequel system (I’d only really count the Wii to Wii U & maybe the NES to SNES).
B) But if you look at it from a Portable console perspective, then yea Nintendo has done countless iterative updates and versions of previous releases.
I think it’s a safe bet we get another version of a Switch this time though given it’s massive success, useability and acclaim… however I always say with Nintendo, you never know!
I understand why Nintendo chose digital triggers with the Joycons… but seeing this kinda makes me wish the Switch controllers had analog triggers like the GCN controller.
The Simpsons Hit & Run, Road Rage & The Arcade Game all deserve new life with HD Remasters/Remakes and/or sequels on Switch.
Also, it’d be great if more Devs, Pubs and/or rights/license holders uploaded all their series’ game music to all the popular DSP’s for easy consumer consumption.
All-digital over here. I appreciate the convenience of having everything compact in one place. I don't resell my games and lending/borrowing with friends or family has become a thing of the past for me. I also sometimes play a lot of games in short play sessions so switching between is much easier digitally- especially since I mostly play cozily in-bed docked.
I just hope Nintendo keeps the digital storefronts open for a super long time this time and carries account data & purchases to every future system going forward now.. similar to Xbox's ecosystem.
Please continue to port/remaster/remake- whatever... just bring all the Tales Of games over to Switch. Also remaster and port the Xenosaga games while you're at it Bamco! SoulCalibur games would be a treat also. A new Project X Zone & Sailor Moon could be interesting too.
This could include more content and it would be nice to have true online play, but it is still awesome as-is. Seems like a nice alternative in case the new Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! isn't up to snuff or possibly priced too highly.
Would love a remade or remastered port of Perfect Dark for Switch. Such a great game. I'd also take a new Conduit, Binary Domain, Vanquish, Oni and/or TimeSplitters if we're talking bringing back old sci-fi shooters.
Year of Little Mac, Captain Falcon, Birdo, Falco, Geno, Boshi, Waluigi, Tatanga, Kid Icarus and most of all King DEDEDE. Nintendo could do well to highlight some of their B-tier or more obscure characters.
Wow these are some nice systems. I've never picked up a game-themed special edition console ever. But that all-gold GameBoy SP is my kind of sleek. If I had to rank these:
1. The Legend of Zelda Gameboy Advance SP 2. New 3DS XL- Hyrule Edition 3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS Bundle
Previously picked up a bunch of games during the mid-year post non-E3 end of June sale & the New Year Sale last year. This year not much that's on sale interests me of what I don't have already.
No rush for atm as I have ton still to get to from what I purchased before. Though I was hoping for more significant sales on Rogue Legacy 2, Tunic, Inscryption, Shin Chan, Omori, Bayonetta 1+2, Kirby & WarioWare.
Used to dip back into Final Fantasy X & Super Mario RPG every so often just for nostalgia purposes. And then there are evergreen games like the classic Mario’s that get some small burn every year at some point. But in general I rarely relay games due to the opportunity cost lost of playing the many games I haven’t yet and still want to i.e. the backlog.
The art style is my kind of aesthetic as it's beautiful. But I need to see more gameplay to get a better idea if this seems like actually my type of fun.
I've always seen this series pop-up here and there, yet I've never tried it despite me playing a wide-variety of JRPG's throughout my time on Earth.
For someone who's never played one, could someone tell me what's unique about the Y's series compared to other popular franchises like say Final Fantasy, Tales Of.. or Star Ocean?
This game's art style kinda reminds me of Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos- a 2D Zelda-like which I loved, however I'm not really into deckbuilder or farming games much. You guys should still review it though!
Yea unsurprisingly, I almost always mostly play older games I waited to get on sale or that have been sitting in my backlog- so the current year's releases are seldom a part of my Top Most Played counts.
What was more surprising to me was the amount of RPG's I started and finished this year- which was a goal of mine given my aforementioned ongoing backlog. Gonna keep it going!

I just hope Nintendo keeps the digital storefronts open for a super long time this time and carries account data & purchases to every future system going forward now.. similar to Xbox's ecosystem.

Re: Bandai Namco Open To More Tales Remasters, Awaiting Fan Requests
Please continue to port/remaster/remake- whatever... just bring all the Tales Of games over to Switch. Also remaster and port the Xenosaga games while you're at it Bamco! SoulCalibur games would be a treat also. A new Project X Zone & Sailor Moon could be interesting too.

Re: Classic Taito Games Get Enhanced Re-Releases On Switch In February
This could include more content and it would be nice to have true online play, but it is still awesome as-is. Seems like a nice alternative in case the new Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! isn't up to snuff or possibly priced too highly.

Re: Random: Perfect Dark's Vision Of 2023 Is Quite Different To The Real Deal
Would love a remade or remastered port of Perfect Dark for Switch. Such a great game. I'd also take a new Conduit, Binary Domain, Vanquish, Oni and/or TimeSplitters if we're talking bringing back old sci-fi shooters.

Re: Poll: The Year Of Luigi Was A Decade Ago, So Whose Turn Is It Now?
Year of Little Mac, Captain Falcon, Birdo, Falco, Geno, Boshi, Waluigi, Tatanga, Kid Icarus and most of all King DEDEDE. Nintendo could do well to highlight some of their B-tier or more obscure characters.

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda-Themed Nintendo Console Has The Best Design?
Wow these are some nice systems. I've never picked up a game-themed special edition console ever. But that all-gold GameBoy SP is my kind of sleek. If I had to rank these:
1. The Legend of Zelda Gameboy Advance SP
2. New 3DS XL- Hyrule Edition
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS Bundle

Re: Atlus Is Preparing Several New Game Announcements For 2023
Super excited to finally be getting Persona 3 & 4 on Switch. Persona 1 & 2 Remakes would be cool, but might be a little much perhaps.
In terms of Atlus, what I'd really love are new Trauma Center and Catherine games on Switch!

Re: Nintendo Slashes Prices Of Switch eShop Games In New Year Sale (North America)

Re: Talking Point: What Game Do You Replay Every Year?
Used to dip back into Final Fantasy X & Super Mario RPG every so often just for nostalgia purposes. And then there are evergreen games like the classic Mario’s that get some small burn every year at some point. But in general I rarely relay games due to the opportunity cost lost of playing the many games I haven’t yet and still want to i.e. the backlog.

Lol shoutout to all the people that don't take commenting on a gaming site too seriously!
Happy New Year & Happy Gaming Everyone! 🎊🎮
Re: Oni: Road To Be The Mightiest Oni Gets A Physical Release In April 2023
The art style is my kind of aesthetic as it's beautiful. But I need to see more gameplay to get a better idea if this seems like actually my type of fun.

Re: Talking Point: What Was The Video Gaming 'Theme' Of 2022?
The theme was and will be the same as every year's...
"Ballin' on a Budget"
i.e. play through the never-ending, ever-growing backlog whilst waiting for decent sales gang 🤙🏾🤙🏾.

Re: Ys X: Nordics Announced For Nintendo Switch, Launching In 2023
I've always seen this series pop-up here and there, yet I've never tried it despite me playing a wide-variety of JRPG's throughout my time on Earth.
For someone who's never played one, could someone tell me what's unique about the Y's series compared to other popular franchises like say Final Fantasy, Tales Of.. or Star Ocean?

Re: Battle, Tame, And Collect Spirits In Beautiful Minish Cap-Like 'Moonstone Island'
This game's art style kinda reminds me of Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos- a 2D Zelda-like which I loved, however I'm not really into deckbuilder or farming games much. You guys should still review it though!

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Year In Review 2022 - Our Most Played Games
My Top 3 Most Played Switch Games For 2022:
1. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (195 Hours)
2. Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (119 Hours)
3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (110 Hours)
