Maybe I'm just getting old and missing some of the 'back in my day' things of my time, but I wish there more cartoonish looking cartoons as opposed to so many of these shows going the CG Animation route. I think some of the charm, character & vibrancy is lost and tbh it's just all too samey looking and prevalent today.
But I mean I'm not gonna complain too much because Lord knows the kids need more animation period as opposed to the current swath sitcoms and reality show drama more prevalent today... but I think it would make the medium more interesting if it was more varied in styles and looks at least (i.e. growing up having Kirby Right Back At Ya, Sonic X, DBZ, Tintin... but also Donkey Kong Country, Action Man, Beast Wars, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, Power Rangers & Star Wars The Clone Wars in terms of varied presentation styles).
Edit: Cuphead & Castlevania would be good examples of newer shows with unique & pleasing animation styles that fit the source material and that aren't the typical CG affair we often see today.
Sounds like no one was really listening to or understanding each other i.e. dismissive and/or a miscommunication/misunderstanding. It's unfortunate, but it happens a lot in corporate hierarchy's tbh. Companies need to learn to listen intently & in good faith and ask questions for better understanding before making quick decisions on things they don't quite get.
I actually like that Squeenix broke these games up into smaller, cheaper standalone experiences (I think a bundle of all of them for a small overall discount would be a great consumer option as well). I think there's a strong market for DS era priced RPG's on Switch that could continue to grow.
More Publishers & IP Holders should do things like this to revitalize their dormant/neglected legacy titles/characters especially if they have no immediate plans to do anything with them themselves.
I've never played anything related to either series, but the timing of all this on both sides seems like a response to the Konami announced Suikoden Remasters (of which I plan to make my entry into the series) or vice versa... healthy gaming competition!
Wouldn’t be DBZ without endless DLC… that ends up costing more than the base game… and is never ever complied into an eventual definitive addition no matter how long after initial release. Smh.
Congrats & well-deserved Superb Sakurai.
Hopefully he becomes inspired to bless those followers with a Fighters Pass 3 & 4 for Smash Ultimate. Let's get the total up to 100!
Happy more people get to experience this game. Persona 5 was my first in the series and I loved it. So much style, flare & elegance in every aspect. I can't wait for Persona 3 & 4 to come to Switch!
Without spoiling anything (since I might still play it someday)... I wonder if anything that happened or was shown in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is relevant to the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom story or reveals any clues?
Would be a good time to put that on sale, but y'know.. Ninten-don't-do-deep-discounts.
It's pretty cool their adding online functionality. Never really tried the Mega Man Battle Network series, but I might try this collection out. Hopefully after this we get a new:
Great article Kate! I like all this lore and speculation, but I won't attempt to rack my brain one way or another... just happy we're getting closer to actually finally experiencing it!
If I had to add to the speculating though, I’m thinking there might be 3 levels vertically. Hyrule (main), ‘HighRule/Skyrule’ (upper) & Lorule (underground/dark world- where malice and Ganon are prominent). So Upper, Middle, Lower Worlds perhaps. I'm hoping we eventually get a fully operational comprehensive Loftwing experience so we are free to explore the whole world via flight- and not just stone bird statues.
Also, please give us Ganondorf and/or Demise and maybe some sub-villains along the way like Vaati, Zant, Ghirahim and/or some new characters & villains- screw the calamity wisp final boss.
Despite the lack of Transfer Pak functionality I'm still glad these games are coming to the platform. I mostly only cared about the mini-games anyways as opposed to the battles. It also kinda equals the playing field in battles.. or makes it boring, predictable and samey depending on your perspective. It'll still be fun to play all the mini-games online- although I wish it wasn't restricted to just your Switch friends and setting up a tethered play session beforehand.
However, this was still the perfect opportunity to announce a Game Boy line NSO App though as a value add to one of the existing tiers. Hopefully it's still coming soon, however given the NSO release schedule outlook they showed.. GB is probably not coming for another 6 months at least which is unfortunate.
It's pretty puzzling & peculiar that they delayed Advance Wars due to the ongoing conflict, but promoted and are releasing Goldeneye which actually heavily features Russian soldiers & infantry. I'm not opposed to releasing either medium of entertainment, just find that to be curious reasoning.
Hopefully real-world events & states have no effect on a potential Battalion Wars 3 or new Nintendo published Army Men: Sarge's Heroes anytime soon either.. please.
yea that was wild lol. I didn't even know that was possible. And you're right, not much coverage on that. Crazy times. I wonder if that person got some sort of backroom NDA deal for their compliance from Ninty on the low. However they probably just got some Platinum & Gold Coins and Club Nintendo merch smh damn.
I mostly agree with you and don't think this will happen. But I also don't think cancelling or not releasing a nearly completed game is out of the realm of possibilities. In fact I think there are far more instances of this happening in gaming than any other modern medium perhaps. And while there would surely be disappointment, I also don't think there would be 'Batgirl' type or levels of coverage and outspoken backlash by the participants. I'd say the gaming industry and it's consumers are more accustom to unpopular decisions. It would be unfortunate though and hopefully it comes sooner than later and this doesn't set a weird precedent of releases having to account for real-world events and states.
Hopefully in this time they've improved the visuals to more of a pixelated, cel-shaded art style more like the originals. The remake seemed to lack the charm of the original in the trailers visually imo.
Also, it's pretty puzzling & peculiar that they delayed Advance Wars due to the ongoing conflict, but promoted and are releasing Goldeneye which actually heavily features Russian soldiers & infantry. I'm not opposed to releasing either medium of entertainment, just find that to be curious reasoning.
Also also, so I guess that means no Battalion Wars 3 or new Nintendo published Army Men: Sarge's Heroes anytime soon either huh? Dang.
Before the initial Booster Pass DLC announcement, I thought they'd port Mario Kart Arcade GP to Switch in lieu of MK9 probably being a ways off still. I still feel it'd be cool if they were to add some courses from that game in the DLC Waves as well since that game isn't super accessible being in arcades only.
@Mgalens I agree. I'd also add the issue with Cloud Gaming still is digital infrastructure and ISPs coverage, speeds & availability (not to mention- interference, interruptions & disruptions).
If internet connections in most metropolitan & suburban, developed areas still aren’t all that fast, stable or even consistently available for so many consumers… I can only imagine how horrible it could be for them in a potential future where console and/or gaming library where it was requisite & dependent upon those things among other factors & supports 24/7 worldwide. Yikes.
Hopefully the infrastructure & affordability issues improve and that all gets sorted out much better for society prior to this potentially becoming a new industry norm in the future.
Something is off or missing from this edition of Wii/Switch Sports (and it isn't just Golf). I really think they should have included all the sports from the previous 2 Wii Sports games + more for a new entry so many years later... not just 6 sports and a couple others down the line. Happens too often it seems this gen with some games seemingly being the right idea, but then too light on content.
Also, I kinda miss the Mii craze and the MiiVerse / Mii Plaza of DS & Wii era. Lots of creative creations with limited tools. And they were easier to transfer and share then. Think the Miis are something they should've integrated & expanded more on and kept it going on Switch! Glad they aren't fully forgotten. Bring those communities and the Mii Craze back! That would've added a lot more character & charm to this game.
That being said, I'm all for more sports games on Switch! Still hoping for a new:
Pilotwings
Mario 3-on-3 Hoops
Mario Superstar Sluggers
Mario Sports Mix (with more obscure sports)
Wave Race
Punch Out! .. think it's also time for a Mario (American) Football Game
I feel your sentiment and agree with you. Wish we were getting some sort of deluxe definitive version at least. One thing that would make this version really unique is if they included a bunch of the crazy mods, characters, updates & customization options from the community over time since then officially... but of course that'll almost never happen.
Fitness Boxing Fist of the North Star was the type of quirky random unexpected unapologetically Japanese surprises I hope we continue to get more of lol it was awesome and hilarious... even if it'd have to be exceptional for me to consider purchasing it myself.
We need more of these arbitrary, smaller, cheaper first-party offerings we saw more of during the DS & Wii days on the Switch to keep things varied, creative & interesting (like Pushmo, Super Princess Peach, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis, Photo Dojo, Pocket Card Jockey, Part-Time UFO, BoxBoy + BoxGirl etc.).
Tbh though I'm surprised they didn't use Little Mac & Doc from Punch Out! for this license crossover... but maybe that's a good thing meaning an actual AAA game could still be coming eventually.
Perfect Dark is a much better game, especially with all the multiplayer customization options (would be awesome with the true online functionality they're bringing to 007), but Goldeneye is obviously more iconic. Hopefully more Rare games are still coming as well.
I'm also skeptical about going back to the outdated controls, this is why custom button re-mapping for titles is one of the many features that needs to be added to these NSO Apps.
New NSO Games online potential (although still yearning for Game Boy, Game Cube & maybe Dreamcast as well as improvements to the emulators & service overall.)
Fitness Boxing: Fist of the North Star (simply for the surprise & quirkiness lol)
Zelda: TOTK + Release Date
Mid-lights:
Final Fantasy Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Pikmin 4
Bayonetta 3
Top Misses:
Miyamoto not mentioning anything Mario basically
Farm game over-saturation
RE: Cloud versions
Advance Wars?
Not bad, but not exceptional. Overall, I was ok with it!
Even though they didn't show much, sometimes just the recognition that some franchise is being worked on, not forgotten and is coming in the near future is often just enough assurance for fans.
Wish some other neglected IP's were fortunate enough to get this acknowledgement (looking at you F-Zero, Super Mario RPG, Kid Icarus, Punch Out, Diddy Kong Racing, Wario Land, Rhythm Heaven, Yoshi’s Island, Golden Sun, Eternal Darkness etc.)
Btw, definitely gonna need way cheaper controller options simply for throwback Mario Party games. Not tryna ruin or shorten the life of expensive drifty Switch JoyCon or Pro Controllers playing some of those minigames.. not to mention the Cons are kinda little, uncomfortable and lack grip when playing portably and have unideal sticks.
I agree. Perfect Dark is a so much better game, especially with all the multiplayer customization options (would be awesome with the true online functionality they're bringing to 007), but Goldeneye is obviously more iconic. Hopefully more Rare games are still coming as well.
Looked like Death Note: Rain Edition to me... which is cool! Love the cel-shading and art style. Seems like a game I'd watch a review or stream of, but not necessarily get into to play myself.
This was a nice surprise for those that never played it. Symphonia was my first Tales game and one of the first games to really make me a fan of the Cel-Shading art style in gaming. Would've been cool if they included the sequel in a bundle, but that one isn't as revered.
Also, it may be a product of me playing this when I was much younger, but I forgot how chibi-like the characters are lol I remember them being bigger for some reason, kinda cool.
Ironically I'm currently playing through Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition right now. I was genuinely surprised by this announcement, but keep the remasters and remakes coming Bandai Namco! We also need many of the later titles on Switch as well.
Oh Strikers *sigh. Interesting comments on this game. I do enjoy Mario Strikers somewhat as the core gameplay is pretty tight, but I definitely agree that it is very light on content. Especially moreso if you want more offline, single player content- without online the game is pretty much tragic as there’s not much variety or things to do/unlock/achieve. I mean even the slim stadium upgrades are locked to the online battle league silver coin payments and use which is silly. Hopefully they add more modes, characters, cosmetics, customization etc. very soon and not drip-feed content longterm.
Online matches being the main portion of the game can get pretty grueling as there are a lot of hardcore advanced players on there as I feel many casual players have dropped the game by now or don't participate nearly as much. Also, we need Pom Pom or the Kremling Kritter back as a goalie option cuz Boom Boom be letting me down constantly smh. Either that or an option to play/switch to a manual goalie as well. That could also go well for a penalty kick mode too.
Still waiting and hopeful for a new Mario 3-On-3 Hoops, Mario Superstar Sluggers & Mario Sports Mix on Switch that are more expansive & comprehensive than the previous Mario Sports offerings this far.
Curious decision to add to the announcement that a new entry is on the way... wouldn't a lot of people mildly interested just opt to wait for that instead?
I mean I guess the transparency is welcomed from a consumer standpoint. Most companies often pull the 'if you want the next or other one, you gotta show us support with this one in terms of our own hidden arbitrary sales expectations' scummy tactic.

Re: Fatal Frame: Mask Of The Lunar Eclipse Haunts Switch Next Year
Hoping Eternal Darkness eventually gets some love surprisingly like how this did. A new entry would be a great October game.. one of these Octobers.

Re: Rune Factory 3 Special Heading To Switch In 2023
Curious decision to add to the announcement that a new entry is on the way... wouldn't a lot of people mildly interested just opt to wait for that instead?
I mean I guess the transparency is welcomed from a consumer standpoint. Most companies often pull the 'if you want the next or other one, you gotta show us support with this one in terms of our own hidden arbitrary sales expectations' scummy tactic.
