Although I don’t replay many games in general (rather spend that time working through the never-ending backlog), this is an interesting topic because it most definitely is a thing- at least for me whether consciously or subconsciously.
Games, being intertwined with tech, are products of their time… and some of those products may not age as well as others. Generally speaking, I’d say I’m weary of going back to anything from the N64, PS1 era- when games were by-and-large making their first jumps to 3D spaces and environments. Camera controls, movement, inputs, 3D sprites/polygons etc. were all still being figured out and fine-tuned and a little janky tbh. Also those were the days of a lot of systems’ controllers just having one analog stick (and even in some cases no “L2, L3 & R2, R3” buttons- speaking in Sony) which obv is much different than having the standard two we’ve had now for years in most cases. Imo this is the era of games that could benefit most with the Remaster/Remake craze by updating/modernizing them with the more common controls & QoL improvements of today.
Then there’s some classics & personal faves I had such a great time with (or that I already invested too much time with) that I also avoid for many of the reasons mentioned above and in the article. But then there are also revered older titles I haven’t played yet- and still want to, but don’t want to be jaded by the issues I encounter due time gap (i.e. hoping for an eventual remaster/remake instead).
Tbh this is kind of a regular unfortunate realization when revisiting some games on the NSO Apps :’(. Great games for their time, although not so great now when replaying through the lens of today- all these years later. Nostalgia is powerful, but not always all-powerful.
Have a feeling the sentiment of "I expected more" has more to do with Nintendo's far too early announcement of MP4 and then subsequent tumultuous development cycle and wait time since. The wait time from announcement to release is what has people expecting a huge upgrade/overhaul or something. Had they not announced Metroid Prime 4 in 2017... then dropped this trailer now (7 years later!), I think that reaction would be much much different as people would just be happy that the series is back and still alive.
Having said that, I love Metroid Prime so I'm amped for Prime 4 even if it does turn out to be just more of the same. That same has been awesome thus far. And also, by golly gosh it was just the first trailer! Way too early to be this judgemental imo, but so goes the innanets.
I would love it if Nintendo could give us some entries in some of their non AAA-tier or some more neglected IPs before we move on to whatever is after the Switch... such as a new:
Punch Out!
F-Zero
Star Fox
Rhythm Heaven
Kid Icarus
MOTHER/Earthbound
Pilotwings
Mario 3-on-3 Hoops
Mario Superstar Sluggers
Mario Sports Mix (with more obscure sports)
Mario & Luigi
Excite Bike/Truck/Bots
Diddy Kong Racing
Wario Land/World
Yoshi's Island
Golden Sun
Eternal Darkness
Fortune Street
... I'd also settle for a Clubhouse 102 Worldwide Game (with more & deeper Card/Strategy games, rule variations and match customization/randomization).
I remember doing this survey. I don’t think I voted for anything DMC (I don’t mind it, but it’s not my favourite IP from them at all), but it seems like that might be one of Capcom’s most in demand tentpole franchises now. Wow good to know .
Gris was one of the most visually & aesthetically pleasing games I’ve ever played. That being said I wouldn’t say it’s as much a game as it is an interactive movie experience (I say the same about another beautiful game Hoa).
If this new offering could be just as gorgeous, but incorporate more gameplay mechanics and elements- then I’d be more interested. Will keep a look out for reviews of this one.
This looks mighty awesome. Loving the old school nostalgia & homage (that Mode 7 aesthetic looks dope) with some modern updates. Also love the variation in levels and perspectives from the trailer. A lot of of beat em up’s are missing the much needed mix-up that vehicular & vertical traversal brings in their level designs. Looking forward to this.
Sidebar: Time for new Sailor Moon, Power Puff Girls, Samurai Pizza Cats, Bucky O’Hare, Darkwing Duck, Tintin, Action Man, Hercules, Xena Warrior Princess, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad games just to name a few if we’re bringing back old licensed games while we’re at it.
Love the HD-2D art style, but I went with full 3D Remake for something different (I’ve already played the 2D version multiple times). Chrono Trigger deserves a bigger remake and I really enjoyed how Square did Trials of Mana actually.
I think No More Heroes 1 was the best (good balance between overworld, combat, story, style etc.) . NMH2 was good too (overworld lacking, but better mini games). Travis Strikes Again was underrated imo as I enjoyed it for what it was, but I understand why a lot of people didn’t like it (repetitive, bland)- still stylish and enjoyed the NES style storytelling though. NMH3 was ok, nothing special about it. Felt like a step back in a lot of ways for the Franchise despite bringing back the overworld (it was largely useless and a bore).
I still love the Franchise though so I’d welcome a NMH4. Just hope they’d take their time with it to make some more improvements/growth you’d expect from a 4th entry.
Got the first game Void Bastards on sale a while back. The art style intrigued me as I love cel shaded games and I was looking for a FPS on Switch- being a FPS rogue-like also was interesting to me. Unfortunately after a couple hours into it, it seemed like FPS combat was actually not point of focus and rather you are coached to avoid most encounters if possible, and instead sneak around enemies to gather resources covertly and conservatively before escaping within the time constraints. It’s not a clear every room i.e. shoot & kill everything type of game (some enemies you really basically cannot even kill on some cases). Might be my own fault (one of the few times recently I’ve purchased a relatively low-profile game without researching about it too much on a whim), but it’s not what I expected so I stopped playing after a while.
At least this sequel looks more combat focused from the trailer, but I’ll wait for reviews and more footage to see how this entry turns out this time though.
I’d always hoped for TOTK DLC that added a true Loftwing (not a build) to the game that let you easily fly around traversing all 3 vertical layers of the world seamlessly & continuously without any barriers or interruption (similar to how BOTW added the Master Cycle).
Also a new Trials & Quest like BOTW DLC would obviously be welcome too. The world is so big, ripe & vast.. it’s set up pretty well to add even more cool content imo.
@Denoloco I 100% agree with you. Nintendo is long overdue to put all their game music on the popular DSP’s for easy public streaming & playlisting. I really like that other publishers known for great music in their games like Square, Sega & Capcom have started to do this now more often.
Video Game Music as a whole needs to update with the times and release more of their OST catalogs digitally for sure.
That’s unfortunate. I really like Roll 7’s unique art directions in their games. Olli Olli World had an awesome aesthetic as did Rollerdrome when I got it on PS Plus recently.. not to mention they are also great games as well.
Kinda getting Blue Fire vibes from this (loved that game, very underrated).. which was almost like a 3D Hollow Knight to me. This looks more combat focused than platforming so far from the trailer though. Gonna keep an eye on this one, hopefully you guys review it!
Super Mario Wonder was ok for me. Not bad by any stretch, but a little too easy for like 97% of the game and had weak boss fights.
Though it did have great music, decent visuals for an 2D platformer and introduced lots of new elements I could easily see translating as new tools to integrate into a Super Mario Maker 3 game.
Still however, I’d prefer something new entirely or a new entry along the lines of some other heralded Mario Games (in terms of gameplay and styles) like a new Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario World and/or Yoshi’s Island.
Mario Baseball games are severely underrated. Still hoping for a new Mario Superstar Sluggers entry on Switch.
More Mario Sports games or compilations are welcome in general (with deeper and more extensive content/modes/options than most of the current Mario Sports titles on Switch) i.e. Basketball, American Football (it’s time!), Hockey (also time for a full game), Sports Mix … Punch-Out (w/ Mario Refereeing again) etc.
Switch definitely needs a quicker “Add to Cart” option here (as well as in the Eshop). It’s kinda painful redeeming these trivial icons one by one every week.
And I also agree that the next Nintendo console should incorporate their form of achievements- maybe with things like these icons as rewards.
Love Knuckes! Hopefully Rouge makes an appearance too. Best part of Sonic Adventure games to me were their stages- banging tunes & just roaming about looking for Chaos Emeralds.
Not usually my type of game, but I’ve wanted to try this series since the art style and Japanese countryside settings are really alluring and also due to me having some really limited exposure to the anime.
Was waiting for Shin Chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation to go on a signicant sale on Switch to maybe take a dip… not sure if I still will or I’ll do the same for this newer entry and wait even longer.
Fortnite gets a lot of somewhat unnecessary hate online, but tbh it’s not a bad game as far as free live service games go. It’s constantly changing and fun to jump in and see how it’s changed after a while. And they keep some diverse content flowing for their fan base. Turtles is a good crossover. Star Wars & Dragon Ball Z were my favourites not that I play often, but I happened to happen upon them during the Pandemic. T’was actually decent fun for a bit!
Sidebar: Speaking of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I wish Rocksteady would make a mature AAA TMNT game like the Arkham series.
Yea I meant I’d take a new entry in any of the aforementioned… whether they want to brand it a new Chrono Trigger or Cross or Break etc. … I’ll take something new in the realm of any of the above. It’s kinda been quite a while now.
Square/Squaresoft/Enix/Square Enix/Squeenix is among my favourite game developers/publishers of all time and I love their return to supporting Nintendo with the Switch almost like they did in the SNES era.
Remasters and Remakes are cool, but I'd also like new games too. That being said it's nice that people who missed out or long to play modernized versions of classics on more easily accessible current platforms get a chance to play these gems.
As for my Wishlist of Square Remasters/Remakes and/or even better, New Entries? on Switch:
Threads of Fate
Vagrant Story
Brave Fencer Musashi
Super Mario RPG (new entry)
Xenogears
Final Fantasy XIII Collection
Bahamut Lagoon
Final Fantasy Tactics
Dragon Quest 1 - 10 (not the crappy mobile ports)
Mario 3-On-3 Hoops
Mario Sports Mix
Chrono Trigger/Cross/Break
Secret of Evermore
Ehrgeiz
Fortune Street
GO Games (i.e. Tomb Raider/Hit-Man GO)
Legacy of Kain (even though Crystal Dynamics/Eidos sold to Embracer- let Square do it)
Hopefully Square can keep up their current output (it's been pretty impressive tbh) whilst maintaining decent levels of quality (with maybe some even becoming new classics like their old titles of yore).. all while also satisfying their usual astronomical internal sales projections.
... yeaaa guess my head is in a Mallow Nimbus Cloud unfortunately with these wishes.
Celeste is amazing. IMO it’s the best game in terms of nailing the delicate balances between difficulty, challenge & frustration.
Somehow I had noooo idea about the free DLC released in 2019- Celeste, Farewell until now. Welp guess it’s time to dust it off and gleefully go back to that damn mountain 🙃.
Also still interested in how Earthblade turns out!
I would love it if Nintendo could give us some entries in some of their non AAA-tier or some more neglected IPs before we move on to whatever is after the Switch... such as a new:
Punch Out!
F-Zero

Yoshi's Island
Golden Sun
Eternal Darkness
Fortune Street
... I'd also settle for a Clubhouse 102 Worldwide Games (with more & deeper Card/Strategy games, rule variations and match customization/randomization).
Been saying this for a while. It’s due time for new Mario 3-On-3 Hoops and Mario Sluggers games please.
But also in addition to those it’s time for Mario to branch out to other athletics as fully fleshed out standalone arcade sports games i.e. Hockey, American Football, Rugby, Weightlifting/Strongman Competitions, Skateboarding/BMX, Rollerblading/Figure Skating, Dodgeball, Volleyball and/or Seepak Tekraw etc. (I understand some of these have been mini-games already in other titles).
Sidebar: I love when Nintendo & Square work together to bring titles to life. Would also be nice to get a new Fortune Street as well.
Makes you realize there really are the have's & have-not's when it comes to massive game sales with certain franchises/games.
Also keeps in perspective how few games (especially non-Nintendo games) ever even break a million sales despite the console's high and ever-growing console sales.
As a sidebar: It would be interesting to somehow know development & marketing costs for games and then necessary sales to break-even and then also how many are needed to make a "decent" profit margin for every game if at all possible. Or even just a Net Profit/Loss based on lifetime sales of games- similar to how the movie industry is widely evaluated and most sales & costs are often public knowledge.
This is would provide a better gauge as to how much a game is considered a "success" business-wise moreso than just raw sales data.
Game Freak is hit or miss, but I'm a fan of a few Private Division published games like Hades, Olli Olli World & especially Rollerdrome (would love to see it come to Switch)- so I'm interested to see what becomes of this.
What a Jet Set/Grind Radio homage! They definitely nailed the look. Hopefully they nailed the groovy sound, feel, vibe and improved/modernized the gameplay too. In lieu of a new Jet Set proper from Sega, I am earnestly anticipating Bomb Rush Cyberfunk! Please be awesome gnarly fun.

Re: Pokémon Studio Game Freak Is Partnering With Private Division On 'Project Bloom'
Game Freak is hit or miss, but I'm a fan of a few Private Division published games like Hades, Olli Olli World & especially Rollerdrome (would love to see it come to Switch)- so I'm interested to see what becomes of this.

Re: Gallery: Team Reptile Teases 'Bomb Rush Cyberfunk' With Brand New Screenshots

... Wun can only hope.
