wow sales in Australia have really improved. I come from a land down under and I'm glad I wasn't the only one contributing to those improved numbers. Honestly I thought their strongest improvements would be in the US with PAL territories marginally improved. Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi !!!
If the next Bayonetta game gets made for a nintendo console then I hope it will be the next console, the "fusion". If they start making it now then in 2 or so years time it could be ready for a wiiU/"fusion" launch release like Twilight Princess was with the gamecube/wii.
sonic boom was a disaster. Why couldn't they have just released an upgraded sonic generations for wiiU instead of trying to reboot sonic - so much fail Sega.
Ok folks lets get a petition going, get lots of signatures and then reggie can deny that petitions have any affect on what NIntendo do and then 2 years later it gets localised !!!
the coming together of home and portable consoles seems inevitable with all the hints NIntendo has dropped. Also the new 3DS and wiiU do seem like precursors for such a machine minus the unified development platform.
It has me wondering tho, to achieve the unified development environment that both the home console half and the portable console half would have to share would it require compatible or at least similar hardware? I don't have a degree in computer science so I can't definitively say that both halves would need to run the same type of CPU. However I am willing to speculate that they do need to be the same type and if that's true then I think ARM is the direction they'll go. X86 and power PC are plenty powerful but neither can match the battery life of ARM and it's not as if ARM stuff runs like poopitypoop off of mains power. One possible way around the graphical limitations of ARM could be to have the system be able to use the chipsets of the home half and the portable half process data in parallel and getting improved textures and resolution that way and making do with a bit less when playing games on either half alone. And perhaps it could achieve best performance by physically connecting together on a dock. With good, clever programming such a thing is theoretically possible.
but but but didn't the armchair experts claim that NIntendo was doomed? that low sales of the wiiU would see Nintendo never make a profit? Didn't they say that Iwata had to be fired? Because if what I read is true then Nintendo are making profits despite lower sales than they'd like, which is due to the way these difficult times are being managed.
I'm glad to see that hyrule warriors has sold well. I've heard lots of good things and I look forward to getting a copy soon. Bayonetta has also sold pretty well for a Platinum game - the percentage of the install base it's sold to is higher on wiiU than that of it's predecessor. This could be the future of third party games on Nintendo consoles, if so I'll sooner take over shovelware and lazy ports.
I'm kinda glad that I haven't yet got into amiibo. I like the figures and the functionality but the supply:demand situation is crazy. I'm not gonna pay $30+ on ebay to get the ones that aren't available in stores.
the new metal gear game has caught my interest but that'll be playable on PS3 but one game that will be console exclusive to PS4 that has caught my attention is SF V. But even that I would need to play first before even considering getting a PS4. Folks might like to buy a playstation and wait for the good games but I prefer to buy a playstation when it's near the end of it's life so that I can snap it up cheap and get the games that interest me on the cheap. I'll prioritise Nintendo stuff and get that new but not sony's gear, that's just how I roll.
@CaviarMeths That line about nintendo swimming in a pool of Wii/DS money got me thinking what are the chances they'll probably name their next console Wii DS given how much they'd like to return to the phat stacks of cash they made with those consoles in the mid to late 2000's and that it follows in naming conventions established with the Wii U and 3DS
scalpers really piss me off. I'm just glad it's not as bad in Australia. At least with the majoras mask 3DS XL the retailers that were taking pre orders online had a limit of one per customer. Which at the very least slows down scalpers. It's thanks to this that I was able to snag one before they completely sold out. There was at least a 24 hour window of availability rather than the 24 minute window there seemed to be for our american counter parts.
It's unfortunate and I hope people didn't lose employment as a result of this change. I have a feeling american consoles will start to flow into Brazil unless the government reduces that dumb tax.
It's pretty cool that Smash bros and Mario Kart on wiiU made it into the top 10. It just goes to show that it's true that well made Nintendo games that have mass appeal have tremendous staying power in the charts. How many weeks did we see games like call of duty rocket to the top of the chart and then drop off a week or two later while Mario Kart 8 stubbornly remained on the chart for months.
given that smartphones and tablets have a touchscreen like the wiiU the logical thing to do as I see it would be to have an app that lets people play demos of games that use the touchscreen interface in clever ways. If the app is free then people would be free to mess around with these demos and if they get hooked on the experience and crave more there can be a redirect that informs the user that "hey the full game is available on wiiU or 3DS" that might be the best way to tap into the massive smart devices market.
Also to everyone who said that playing precise games like mario bros and megaman on a touchscreen is daft, I concur 100%. The only way to play those games on a smart device without feeling cheated is to pair a bluetooth controller to it and use that.
If Nintendo was to make a new F-Zero game for current consoles their best way to guard against the possibility of high demand but low sales could be to crank out an HD remake of F-Zero GX but with new tracks and support for the GCN controller adapter. After being absent for the better part of a decade fans might be happy to buy an F-Zero game that is at once familiar but with new content rather than go to the expense of creating a new game engine from scratch. Even reskinning Mario Kart 8 into nuthin' but anti-gravity tracks would probably be a lot of work.
@Sir_JBizzle holy hell 500 bucks spent already on amiibo when fuel for amiibo runs is factored in !! I admire your dedication at the very least. This just makes me wonder why can't Nintendo just have them available directly from them in addition to bricks and mortar retailers? Oh well at least Nintendo is doing well out of this new product line of theirs.
wow I didn't expect third party games like ace combat 3D and that new one piece game to support amiibo. Then again these days Bandai-Namco and Nintendo are BFF's
A list of things I would like to see in the next Nintendo console, in no particular order:
*backwards compatibility
*support for as many existing controllers as possible
*a proper account system instead of digital content being tied to hardware - this is the one thing that prevents me from buying games on virtual console
*no more region locking
*Do away with optical drives, replace game discs with digital distribution and game cards that use a proprietry flash memory format so that customers can still choose to have their games in physical format if so desired
*I like the idea of finally unifying home and portable consoles to work as one. Like maybe half the computational power be in the portable half and the other half in the home half so that they can work independently and output decent graphics like the 3DS currently does but when they're able to work together the game automatically upscales to much more detail to take advantage of the increased power available. Being able to play the same game on the go or at home could be a big selling point particularly in Japan where portable games are still really popular.
*I just hope NIntendo can find a way to reach out to third parties without letting them walk all over them like Sony and microsoft have. If Nintendo could find a way to bury the hatchet with Namco then anything is possible.
In some ways it can be better to be under supplied rather than over supplied. I think Nintendo were worried about overestimating demand for amiibo, manufacturing too many and being stuck with stock that couldn't be sold. Because once people see them in bargain bins being priced to move not only does the brand value decrease but people will hold off buying them new in the hope of unsold stock prices being slashed a little later. Now that people know that Nintendo isn't going to over produce these NFC figures there is more incentive to snap them up immediately when they are restocked.
a mr game and watch and zero samus suit amiibo would interest me the most off that list. I'm not a fan of the support pillar on some amiibo especially where it's yellow and really intrusive visually. It would be great if NIntendo could find a way to produce them in a way that eliminates the need for that support pillar. Even if it's something as simple as just making them all with both feet on the platform.
With the shortages and the speculation over production runs and such. My theory is they will produce more of the ones with lower supplies that sold out really quickly but they'll be different (hopefully improved) like in a different pose. Perhaps it could work as a cynical move to entice the hardcore collectors to buy more of the same figure to have the most complete collection.
I was lucky that I ordered an adapter just before Nintendo ran out of stock. And I ordered a couple of controllers off play-asia for less than retail (that's including delivery). I feel bad for everybody that missed out with these stock shortages and scalpers on Ebay.
Interestingly enough when I ordered my adapter from Nintendo adapters on Ebay were already attracting bids upwards of $150 which is nearly 5 times the price Nintendo were charging and they were still available at that time. Even worse when I checked out how much GCN controllers were going for on ebay second hand proper Nintendo ones were going for similar prices to the new ones that I bought online.
I don't want to blame Nintendo for this situation as they kinda had to be wary of overestimating demand and the problems that can come with over production and over supply. But now that they know what the demand is they could strike fear into the scalpers by unequivocally stating that there will be more production runs to meet the demand. When people are willing to pay above the odds on Ebay it means there is money to be made and surely Nintendo wants to get that money instead of letting the scalpers have it.
@PinkSpider Don't get too downbeat about GTA V outselling Smash bros. AAA third party games like it and Bayonetta 2 typically fall off the top 20 rather quickly While Nintendo games stay in the chart much longer, just look at Mario Kart 8.
It's official Amiibo is the new beanie babies. I hope that this can be a cash cow that Nintendo can milk on an ongoing basis. I have a feeling there will be new series of amiibo and their in game functionality will increase with time.
Just recently I bought a jail broken PS3 for like 200 bucks. It can be a nifty little multimedia device to play movies, blurays, emulators and the handful of PS3 bootlegged games I'd like to play. Sometimes it pays to wait. Had I got one at launch back in '07 I'd have paid 1000 bucks for that and 100 bucks for each non bootlegged game. Even though a I got a PS3 on the cheap I still feel like my wiiU is better value.
I luv how every time I read the comments section there are always pessimists who seem to expect the wiiU to suddenly start selling like the wii or the PS2 and anything less than that is complete failure. No matter what the good news reported they always see the glass as half empty LoL.
of all the street fighter games you guys had to choose the announcer from my favourite SF game. Nice work NL. I was totally expecting you guys to use the announcer from SF IV so I was pleasantly surprised.
An interesting exchange of views between JasonH and Quorthon. while it does seem that Nintendo is approaching a crossroads where they need to reassess their plan of attack. It's really easy for people to say Nintendo needs to bring third parties back and that they need to release more powerful hardware but what that really means is they want Nintendo to copy sony and microsoft. Neither Sony nor Microsoft have the depth of first party content that Nintendo has so if they don't bow to the will of third party studios their consoles wont be able to claim the amount of market share that they currently do. This is a situation that gives third party studios a lot of power and a lot of say in the hardware chosen for a new console - something Nintendo could never accept. And using more powerful and more expensive hardware isn't guaranteed to get third parties on board when Sony and Microsoft charge lower licensing fees among other concessions. If the price of getting third parties on board is more than it's worth why should Nintendo bring themselves down to sony and microsoft's level when those two aren't making a lot of money off their games business? Rather they are using their games divisions as a means to a different end, to rule the living room with all in one media boxes that also happen to play games. It's a race to the bottom between sony and microsoft and Nintendo needs to plan their next move smartly.
the addition of SMB3 and SMBW has got me even more psyched for this game as those are two of my fave mario games. If Ninty confirms online level sharing then this will become a must have game.
Wow the wiiU has so much going for it but still it can't ramp up it's sales no matter how many quality exclusives it has. I'll bet Yamauchi-san regrets allowing Sony the opportunity to get a foothold in their territory because now that they have established themselves in the interactive entertainment market their marketing hype has become all pervasive. People will happily pony up the dough for a machine that costs more, has fewer quality games and offers less innovation purely out of brand loyalty. All the same I want Nintendo to learn from their setbacks and keep fighting on their terms. Eventually Sony and microsoft will tire of making loss after loss and move on once they find a way to do so with out losing face. I look forward to the day when Nintendo finally reclaims their throne, even if that day is a long way away.
I ordered a couple of GCN controllers off playasia and my gamecube adapter is on the way too. In the mean time I think I will test out my PS2 to wii-mote adapter by plugging my arcade stick into it and seeing if an 8 button arcade stick is any good for smash bros.
I've played it a bit on the gamepad and it's good but my main gripe is that the 4 face buttons aren't intuitively mapped for a game like smash. I find myself constantly having to remind myself which button is for a normal attack and which is for a special attack.
wow 6/10 is even lower than I was expecting this game to get. I knew ubisoft were going to put in minimal effort with the wiiU port but this just seems weak. I was never going to pay full price for this but now I think I'll just skip this one entirely.
exactly what I expected. The 360 and the wiiU versions look identical. Ubisoft couldn't be bothered optimising the wiiU port like the lazy barstewards they are. At least they pu some gamepad features in the wiiU port. Here's hoping they aren't completely shallow.
This whole sonic boom fiasco is baffling. I understand that Sega thought that tying in this sonic reboot in with a new CGi cartoon was a brilliant idea (on paper it was). But why make this new sonic reboot exclusive to Nintendo's consoles? Why not go for broke with a multi-platform approach?
Personally I would have rather seen Sega release an updated port of Sonic Generations on wiiU. A definitive edition with graphics optimised to take advantage of the wiiU's hardware, bonus levels that weren't present in the PS360 versions. And then release sonic boom the next year on multiple platforms.
I get the impression that Sega didn't supervise the development of sonic boom very closely and only cared about having it out in time for the holiday shopping season. All Sega had to do was stick to what works rather than try and reinvent the wheel in the most half assed way.
It's probably just as well as there is more than enough game related stuff that I plan to buy so my wallet didn't need to be stretched by a well made sonic game this holiday season. Just as well that I treated this game with skepticism from the moment it was announced.
As someone who doesn't buy collectable figurines normally I require a fair amount of persuasion. Which means I'm not really going to be one of the folks preordering each amiibo as each wave is announced. What worries me is that with these exclusive deals that are being cooked up is that if I find myself buying one and being really pleased with it and wanting to buy more. Only to find scalpers and early adopters scooping up a limited release (which could be of a character I might really want to get) and then the only ones left being on ebay at extortionate prices. I worry that could happen with these exclusive releases.
well if the online is as good as mario kart 8's then it would at least be enough. It seems like Nintendo have learnt where they went wrong with the wii's online capability so this hasn't changed from being a day one buy for me.
for my personal tastes wiiU has always seemed better value than PS4 or xbone. Not only is it cheaper than them but it has more of the types of games I am interested in playing. Earlier in the year when I was evaluating if a wind waker bundle was worth importing from europe it was games like Mario kart, 3D world, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade and smash bros that sealed the deal. The proliferation of PS360 ports from when the wiiU first came out wasn't a problem for me as I never bothered to get a 360 or PS3 so I've snapped up a few of the highly rated ones that I were available at knockdown prices. And some day I will get around to playing them. Currently Mario Kart 8 has got me hooked and when I get smash bros I suspect it will be a similar story. So with the limited time that I dedicate to playing games my wiiU can keep me going for a long time before the games I own become stale. This is why I only buy one home console per gen. Even though I could buy all 3 if I wanted the other 2 don't have any game in particular that brings out that "must have" feeling in me.
Perhaps if Capcom's 8th gen SF game is cel shaded like guilty gear Xrd with fluid animations and crisp gameplay like alpha 3 had I would be tempted but the chances of Capcom doing something like that seem microscopic. They'll likely just make SF V and it'll be just like SF IV but with slightly improved graphics and little more.
So for all Nintendo cares Toadette could be a new half or a futanari. Anyway I'm glad Nintendo spends more time making games that are fun to play rather than wasting time having concrete answers about toad genders.
I guess the bayonetta sales shouldn't be overly surprising given that a lot of the people who would have otherwise bought it are the mouth breathers who clog up the youtube comments section condemning platinum for not releasing it on a console that has xbox or playstation in it's name. They basically want it to sell poorly because they have the "if I can't have it nobody should have it" mindset combined with "no way am I buying wiiU. If it can't play all the yearly multiplats, that are available on everything else, then I don't want it. Who cares about exclusive games that are well made and are fun to play when I can buy remakes of games that were released last year." and so on.
It's a highly rated game exclusive to an underrated console. There will only be a limited print run like maybe one million world wide. So my advice is to buy it, not for the sake of operational platinum but for the sake of a good investment. 10-20 years from now when these COD focused dudebros have grown up some of them will mature and realise that because of their fanboyism they missed out on a really good game, one which by that time could be rather rare. A bit like the Taito games that came out late in the NES's lifespan like Little Sampson.
Even though there doesn't seem to be a lot of luv for gamestop there does seem to be a lot wiiU owners who'll be buying at least one amiibo so this venture is sure to be quite the money spinner I sus[ect.
looks cool, hopefully they use the wiiU's power to refine the character models and animations, the backgrounds are already very pretty. It's a different game and the wiiU could certainly use some of that, hopefully it turns out to be a well made game that gets released in PAL territories.
3DS is killing it in Japan. PS4 sales are just about double wiiU this week. I have no doubt Nintendo are working on the "fusion". If anybody can find a way to sell a portable and home console all in one that breaks the mould it's Nintendo. And the need to do it and get it right on the first try seems to grow with every passing week.
a reproduction zapper wiimote cradle would be the shiznit. And that dog and duck combo reminds me of banjo kazooie a bit. Could Nintendo be testing the waters to see if there is a possibility of using these characters in something more than lightgun/smash bros games? It's probably just wishful thinking but who knows.
@SahashraLA That's negative man, Yknow there were people who were saying mario kart 8 was gonna bomb and the only people buying it would be among those who already owned a wiiU. They said a lot of the same things you're saying and yet they were wrong in their predictions.

@PinkSpider Don't get too downbeat about GTA V outselling Smash bros. AAA third party games like it and Bayonetta 2 typically fall off the top 20 rather quickly While Nintendo games stay in the chart much longer, just look at Mario Kart 8.
Re: Rosalina & Luma amiibo Exclusive to Target in US, as More Peculiar Defects Are Shown Off Online
It's official Amiibo is the new beanie babies. I hope that this can be a cash cow that Nintendo can milk on an ongoing basis. I have a feeling there will be new series of amiibo and their in game functionality will increase with time.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Wii U Basic Bundle Heading for Spain
Re: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Sold to Over Ten Percent of Japanese Wii U Owners as System's Sales Rise
I luv how every time I read the comments section there are always pessimists who seem to expect the wiiU to suddenly start selling like the wii or the PS2 and anything less than that is complete failure. No matter what the good news reported they always see the glass as half empty LoL.
Re: Video: What if... Smash Bros. Had Announcers From Other Fighting Games?
of all the street fighter games you guys had to choose the announcer from my favourite SF game. Nice work NL. I was totally expecting you guys to use the announcer from SF IV so I was pleasantly surprised.
Re: Nintendo's Holiday Sales and Profit Set to be "Best in Years"
An interesting exchange of views between JasonH and Quorthon. while it does seem that Nintendo is approaching a crossroads where they need to reassess their plan of attack.
Re: Rumour: Villager, Marth & Wii Fit Trainer amiibo Discontinued
well at the very least amiibo is shaping up to be the money spinner Nintendo always hoped it would be.
Re: New Mario Maker Footage Shows Off Multi-Generational Madness
the addition of SMB3 and SMBW has got me even more psyched for this game as those are two of my fave mario games. If Ninty confirms online level sharing then this will become a must have game.
Re: Nintendo Wins Four At The Game Awards 2014, While Shovel Knight Scoops Best Indie Prize
Re: Sonic Boom is Doing Pretty Well!
I saw the first couple of episodes. They were ok, nothing ground breaking.
Re: PDP GameCube-Style Wired Fight Pads for Donkey Kong, Link, Samus and Wario Due in Early 2015
Re: Review: Watch Dogs (Wii U)
wow 6/10 is even lower than I was expecting this game to get. I knew ubisoft were going to put in minimal effort with the wiiU port but this just seems weak. I was never going to pay full price for this but now I think I'll just skip this one entirely.
Re: Video: How Does Watch Dogs Wii U Compare To The Xbox 360 And PS4 Versions?
exactly what I expected. The 360 and the wiiU versions look identical. Ubisoft couldn't be bothered optimising the wiiU port like the lazy barstewards they are. At least they pu some gamepad features in the wiiU port. Here's hoping they aren't completely shallow.
Re: Sonic Boom Wii U And 3DS Both Stall Outside Of The UK Multiformat Top 40
Re: Guide: The Best Black Friday Nintendo Deals in the US
Winter is coming
Re: Lucario amiibo Confirmed as a Toys "R" Us Exclusive in US
As someone who doesn't buy collectable figurines normally I require a fair amount of persuasion.
Re: Review: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Wii U)
well if the online is as good as mario kart 8's then it would at least be enough. It seems like Nintendo have learnt where they went wrong with the wii's online capability so this hasn't changed from being a day one buy for me.
Re: Video: GameStop Shows How It Faked 'Karissa the Destroyer' at Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Event
as far as marketing stunts go its not the most evil one that is for sure
Re: The Nintendo Wii U Is Better Value For Money Than Xbox One Or PS4, Says Reggie
for my personal tastes wiiU has always seemed better value than PS4 or xbone.
Re: Captain Toad Producer Says Nintendo Never Fully Considered Gender with Toads
So for all Nintendo cares Toadette could be a new half or a futanari. Anyway I'm glad Nintendo spends more time making games that are fun to play rather than wasting time having concrete answers about toad genders.
Re: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Claims Second in NPD Charts
Re: Shulk amiibo Listed as GameStop Exclusive in the US
Even though there doesn't seem to be a lot of luv for gamestop there does seem to be a lot wiiU owners who'll be buying at least one amiibo so this venture is sure to be quite the money spinner I sus[ect.
Re: Rodea the Sky Soldier Now Flying Into a Spring 2015 Release in Japan, for Wii U and 3DS
looks cool, hopefully they use the wiiU's power to refine the character models and animations, the backgrounds are already very pretty. It's a different game and the wiiU could certainly use some of that, hopefully it turns out to be a well made game that gets released in PAL territories.
Re: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Continues to Dominate in Japan as New Nintendo 3DS Leads Hardware Sales
Re: Gallery: Duck Hunt's Super Smash Bros. Screens Are Barking Mad
a reproduction zapper wiimote cradle would be the shiznit. And that dog and duck combo reminds me of banjo kazooie a bit. Could Nintendo be testing the waters to see if there is a possibility of using these characters in something more than lightgun/smash bros games? It's probably just wishful thinking but who knows.
Re: Nintendo Returns to Profit as Wii U Sales Show Signs of Life
@SahashraLA That's negative man, Yknow there were people who were saying mario kart 8 was gonna bomb and the only people buying it would be among those who already owned a wiiU. They said a lot of the same things you're saying and yet they were wrong in their predictions.
