Re: Poll: Should Nintendo Follow Microsoft's Lead With A Wii U Price Cut?

theBluntKnight

Every retailer I go to the Nintendo stuff is hidden away in a corner while the playstation, xbox and PC stuff is more prominently on display even though you often see the same games across those three sections while the Nintendo section always offers something different.

I'm glad that NIntendo is returning to profit but my feeling is that Nintendo's situation atm has some parallels to that of Apple in the nineties before Steve Jobs returned to the helm. What changed Apple's fortunes was giving up on ruling the desktop market that Microsoft had under lock and key and instead branch out into the more profitable mobile devices market. If the new 3DS is anything to go by then more frequent updates of portable consoles is practically a given.

But something that might boost the wiiU's marketability is if the new 3DS or even just the 3DS could function as a gamepad for the wiiU. It can already function as an extra controller for the upcoming wiiU smash bros. It may just need a special cartridge to function as a gamepad. Then a cheaper gamepad-less wiiU could be offered. This could be a way to cut the price with out losing face, and without losing the functionality and differentiating factor that the gamepad brings. There are around 40 million 3DS owners out there, I'm willing to bet that some of them are kids who can't convince their parents to buy a second console if it's more than $100-150. If they can get their parents to buy them a $150 wiiU for a birthday or barmitzvah present then sales of wiiU could improve. And then there are all the chumps out there who bought a PS4 riding that incredible wave of hype and are a little buttsore that Bayonetta 2 wont be gracing their would be wonder-machine. They are the ones that (woefully) complain that the wiiU is too expensive for one game, so a cheaper gamepad-less wiiU could get them over the line particularly if they already have a 3DS that they can use as a controller.

Re: Mewtwo Returns to Super Smash Bros., Ridley and Metal Face Explained

theBluntKnight

wow there are so many accusations of a cash grab with regards to buying both versions to get mewtwo. For those who don't want to buy both versions for whatever reason there seems a fairly obvious work around. register a friend's copy of the one you don't intend to buy on club Nintendo. There'll likely be many more 3DS smash games in people's collections but I'm sure the internet can bring together the two halves somehow to save people some coin. Smash bros is already a big selling franchise and with it now on 3DS the franchise is already raking in more than if it were only on the home console so I think it is a little glib to say they're doing it just for the money. To me it seems they're doing it to give people more of a genuine reason to buy both.

I was originally primarily interested in just the wiiU version as I don't use public transport and don't really play my 3DS on the go all that much so if the 3DS version's only selling point was you can play it away from home then I probably wouldn't have been tempted to buy it but now that there is even more incentive I'm in.

Re: Nintendo UK Executive Says Wii U Has Had "Quite a Good Year So Far"

theBluntKnight

It's nice to hear Nintendo UK say something upbeat about the wiiU. It's totally underrated. While it has it's struggles it's been well worth the cash I spent on it. I don't mind if third parties keep their crappy ports if it means the wiiU can have quality over quantity. I have nearly ten games already and I haven't finished them all yet and with Bayonetta, smash bros and a host of other games to come I wont be left wanting.

Re: Project CARS Delayed to March 2015 on PS4 and Xbox One, Wii U Still Stalled with '2015' Window

theBluntKnight

this doesn't sound the same as the watch dogs douchebaggery. at any rate I'm not even mad that Ubisoft delayed the wiiU version by half a year I'm impressed. Impressed that they were bold enough to give wiiU owners to see how overhyped the other versions were. Anyway as far as this game goes for me if it gets glowing reviews I might consider getting it. I'm still playing MK8 so I'm in no urgent need for another racing game right now but if this game has some serious chops I might consider it.

Re: I Had No Idea If I Was Fighting Demons, Dragons Or Flying Giraffes, Admits The Voice Of Bayonetta

theBluntKnight

I appreciate the insight into the behind the scenes for the voice acting for Bayonetta. I was really disappointed that the producers only give the voice actors a half hour to read the script and don't give the actors a lot of detail on the story. Why not just use a non disclosure agreement? Anyway I guess this explains why the english voice acting can be a bit of a mixed bag where sometimes the actors sound like they're over acting compared to their japanese counterparts. Knowing this I will cut them some slack before passing judgement.

Also the actor that voices Bayonetta is really pretty and I don't care who knows it.

Re: Nintendo Releases Drop in UK Charts in Face of Major Multi-Platform Titles

theBluntKnight

I have a feeling that in order to relax it's licensing rules to win back third parties in the next gen Nintendo might have to go for fully digital, with physical copies of games completely phased out. WIth digital distribution they could change their policy of the publisher paying the cost of manufacture.

But NIntendo needs to find a way to broaden their appeal with out throwing away their best attributes. Unlike many folks out there I think they can do this without firing all the current directors. Miyamoto and Iwata aren't spring chickens, I would hope that they can bring in new employees and promote from within. They do have a new building that will be a part of their operations, so who knows what the future will bring. I just hope they deal with this challenge seriously but with calmness.

Re: Rejoice, Little Orbit's Penguins Of Madagascar Video Game Is A Nintendo Exclusive

theBluntKnight

Yay?

It's obvious wiiU needs third party games made specifically for it, but THIS??? this is just sad, they might as well just stop beating around the bush and just say "we only want to release kid friendly games on wiiU because we don't want any wiiU owners over the age of ten to give us their money" Or better yet "we're only going to release kid friendly games on wiiU because kids and parents are more likely to pay us for the lacklustre crap we release"

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Flipped The Tea Table with Hyrule Warriors

theBluntKnight

I am glad Miyamoto insisted that they graft zelda assets into a Dynasty warriors game. With the new WiiU zelda set to come out next year Nintendo didn't need a game too similar to cannibalize sales of the next (presumably) great Zelda game. This is more of a warm up act to whet the fan's appetites. Who cares if cynics brush it off as Dynasty Warriors in Zelda clothing, this is something made by people who care about wiiU for wiiU owners out there.

Re: Ubisoft Executive Talks Up Super Smash Bros. as a Wii U System Seller

theBluntKnight

oh right, so ubisoft are gonna play the old wait and see. If smash bros sells consoles to their liking then they'll grace the wiiU with this mystery game that they've been holding back all this time.

Hmmm I wonder if anybody will even care by the time they release it, if they even release it at all.

Somehow I have this feeling that they'll just recode it for PS4, nobody will buy it and they'll find some convoluted way to blame that on Nintendo, because yknow it's what all the cool kids are doing these days.

Re: Ubisoft Clarifies Reasoning For The Crew Skipping Wii U

theBluntKnight

@TheAdrock bah, the market and developers can eat a fat d1ck. The moment Nintendo starts dancing to the tune of 3rd party developers is the moment they are doomed. Think about what 3rd parties would want nintendo to do to appease them, a new console would have to have x86 architecture with specs requested by developers. Would developers care that the requested specs would mean hardware has to be sold at a significant loss in order to be sold at a price people are willing to pay? I doubt it. They just want to make PC games and port them to console with minimal effort. Why else did both Sony turn their back on power pc architecture in favour of x86 in the same generation?

Even during the NES and SNES days 3rd parties Nintendo had the upper hand over third parties. When the PS1 came out the balance of power shifted in favour of 3rd party developers. Sony and now Microsoft rely heavily on the support of third parties. Nintendo can still get them back on side but it would mean having to bow and scrape to them now that they have options and the upper hand.

Re: Orders Open For Xbox One in China as Nintendo Looks On

theBluntKnight

damn I get the feeling NIntendo knows something about the chinese market that we dont. I mean the obvious move is surely to just sell the wiiU there. I'm pretty sure the wiiU is being made in chine. I suspect it's part of a deal struck with chinese manufacturers and the government to have the console made to suit some particular element of the chinese market. I hope for nintendo's sake they know what they're doing.

Re: Review: One Piece Unlimited World Red (Wii U)

theBluntKnight

I'm a big one piece fan but I'm still tossing up whether I should get this game when I have a backlog of games still. Well it seems to be selling well atm so it doesn't seem to need my support so maybe I'll wait a while when more copies are avalilable.

Re: Kotaku Says YES to the Wii U - Rejoicing Begins

theBluntKnight

well it's nice that Kotaku have something nice to say about the wiiU for a change. It just makes me glad that I didn't let them do all the thinking for me when I was tossing up whether to buy a wiiU. I went and bought one back when super mario 3D world came out and everyone was saying "nintendo is doomed" "wiiU is the next dreamcast" "Nintendo will go 3rd party, can't wait to play zelda on my xbox/playstation hahaha". Suffice to say I am very happy with my wiiU and I have around 10 games already for it.At this point in time I have no desire to get any of the competing consoles and I can't see that changing anytime soon, even though I could easily afford them.

Re: Cross-Buy is Now a Thing on Nintendo Platforms

theBluntKnight

If they reformed virtual console games so that a game bought exists on your account rather than a particular console meaning that ya only have to buy a VC game once and only once. How many times do they think people want to buy a classic like super mario 3? I have no plans to buy anything on VC until this is addressed by Nintendo, till then I'll just use emulators to play classic games if I can't get my hands on a physical copy.

Re: 72 Million Kids Are Dying To Get Their Grubby Hands On Smart Toys Like Amiibo

theBluntKnight

I'm 31 and I'm interested in getting some if not all of these amiibos. For the record I have no interest in skylanders or disney infinity nor have I bought any other video game merchandise figures. What might tempt me to splash some of my hard earned cash on these is that they look well made from the photos I've seen and the potential to interact with multiple wiiU and 3ds games

Re: Mario Kart 8 Speeds Into Second Place In NPD May Sales, Kirby Powers Up In Ninth

theBluntKnight

TBH I am kind of surprised to hear people who own a wiiU and enjoy the games on it say that they hate the gamepad. I would've thought someone who hates the Gamepad would do one of these three things

1) not buy it in the first place
2) sell their wiiU in the case of buyers' remorse
3) use a pro-controller and quit hijacking the comments section with their petty gripes

gamepad hatin' wiiU owners are entitled to have opinions, even if they're unpopular ones. Just don't be overly surprised if folks who have a different opinion put forth their own argument.

Re: FIFA 15 Is Lacing Its Boots For A Wii And 3DS Appearance, But Is Skipping The Wii U

theBluntKnight

Oh no EA games for wiiU. I might have bought one or two if they had interesting gameplay experiences to offer. Ah well that is cash that can be spent on other things. I just recently bought a cheap copy of fifa 13 to practise on for when I play it on PS3 at my friend's place.

the FIFA series is decent enough but not enough to make me want to grab an xbone or ps4. However if Konami got their heads out of their asses long enough to make a good PES game for WiiU I would seriously consider buying it. they wouldn't even have to do a yearly rerelease like EA does every two, three or 4 years would be ok if they can do online upgrades and expansions with out being dicks about it.

Re: Wii Owners Are Upgrading To PlayStation 4, Claims Sony

theBluntKnight

currently wiiU is the only 8th gen system I own.
Wii is the only 7th gen I have and gamecube + PS2 are the 6th gen systems I own and before that it's nuttin' but Nintendo.

I'm a nintendo fan, I like their approach to making games and I make no apologies for that.

Interestingly the wii was the first only console I bought at launch. The motion controls had me psyched for the new gameplay possibilities and a free game offer for pre ordering sealed the deal. It was great to see Nintendo selling more consoles than Sony and Microsoft. The Wii certainly wasn't perfect as a console yet it's short comings didn't prevent me from enjoying the good games that it had. By 2009 though the euphoria and hope I had for the wii's potential was evaporating and from that point on my interest in gaming in general was on the wane. PS360 had some critically acclaimed games that I heard folks were enjoying but they weren't really the sorts of games I was dying to play.

By the time the WiiU was revealed I saw the gamepad and was mildly impressed but shamefully I thought it was a peripheral for the Wii at first. I looked a little closer to see if it would have really interesting games in the pipeline. The launch titles didn't really tickle my fancy and I just kinda forgot about the wiiU for a while. Last years E3 changed that though. when Sony and Microsoft announced their new consoles and all the bad press that microsoft copped caught my attention. With the hype that PS4 and xbone were getting there was a tremendous amount of doom and gloom being cast upon the wiiU. People were saying things like "now that GTA V skipped wiiU in favor of PS3 and xb360 it's fate as the next dreamcast is virtually sealed" and so on. It all made me want to look at what each had to offer with as much objectivity as possible. Looking past the hype, enhanced graphics and computing power that Sony and Microsoft's offerings had over WiiU the games told a different story. WiiU had more of the sort of games I was interested in playing. And even though by this point 3rd parties were publicly dropping support for the WiiU I looked at what they had already released on it so far and by and large they were PS360 ports many were definitive editions often selling at clearance prices. Which for me was perfect as I hadn't already played those games. Combined with the fact that I don't spend more than 2-3 hours per day playing games the wiiU exclusives that I liked in the pipeline for the made wiiU were perfect for me.

So it was that I got my wiiU earlier this year and have really enjoyed super mario 3d world and Mario kart in particular. I have almost 10 games already and most of them I haven't even played yet (shameful I know). But what I'm getting at is that despite nintendo's inadequate marketing for the wiiU (in the early days at least) I really feel that the WiiU is a step up from what the Wii was. I didn't expect the HD graphics and the gamepad to be such a step up from the wii but I have been pleasantly surprised. If Nintendo can maintaing a steady stream of quality games then my wiiU will not gather dust like my Wii did late in it's generation (to be fair all my consoles were gathering dust at that time).

Sony may well sell more and more PS4's and they may end up winning this generation (in terms of total sales). And that won't bother me very much as long as Nintendo stays focussed, supports the wiiU and 3ds fully all the way.
RIght now I have no desire to buy xbone or PS4. If sometime in the future I find myself wanting to play some of those 3rd party multi-plats I would sooner get a decent gaming PC. Especially if one day some computer genius cracks the software protection that currently prevents those games being playable on PC, then even their exclusives wont be safe from the PC. And should that day come there schadenfreude will rain down upon them from nintendo fans who know that such a feat for wiiU games has many more hurdles making it highly unlikely.

wow, I didn't mean to write an essay but reading the comments here made me want to share my views and experiences.

Re: E3 2014: Shigeru Miyamoto Confirms Star Fox for Wii U

theBluntKnight

for all the people concerned about the gamepad-centric controls demoed by Miyamoto-san I have a strong feeling that the finished game will allow players to opt for more traditional controls. A bit like the wii wheel, some people hate it and some people love it but by giving players the choice everybody wins. I hope that NIntendo carries this over into the new starfox.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's GamePad Bet Could Pay Off

theBluntKnight

in a way I feel bad for the people who dislike the gamepad because Nintendo is making a concerted effort to utilise the gamepad more and more in it's games which will make it harder to get by using just the pro controller.

However I like the gamepad, I find it comfortable and I couldn't imagine playing my wiiU with any other controller. Off screen play is a really nifty feature that I find myself using more and more. And I agree the gamepad is something that prevents the wiiU just being a PC in nintendo packaging (I'm aware that power pc architecture isn't used in PCs as such but in the early 2000s apple used them in their imacs which are PC-like).

I'm sure that if Nintendo wanted to play it safe they could have focussed on processing power and used a pro controller instead of the gamepad. However I don't think that would have been to the wiiU's advantage. Sure blockbusters like MK8 and smash bros wouldn't have been adversely affected but with controllers that offer nothing new there would be fewer avenues for game makers to innovate. I would just like to point out that with just about every console generation Nintendo has introduced something new to their controllers. With the NES it was the start and select buttons that enabled people to pause their game from the control pad rather than having the pause button on the console itself like Sega did with the master system. The SNES gave the world shoulder buttons and the N64 introduced the analogue stick and rumble feedback. The gamecube is the odd one out as had a unique button layout but that was more of a refinement and of course the wii popularised motion controls. So to me the game pad is just the latest trend in Nintendo's drive to offer something new in their controllers.

Re: E3 2014: Nintendo Planning To Release Amiibo Figures for Entire Super Smash Bros. Roster

theBluntKnight

I have not really one to buy collectable figures, nor did I get tempted to buy in to the skylanders or disney infinity franchises but these I am feeling very tempted to get into. They are highly detailed and look really cool to display but the fact that they can interact with SSB and other nintendo games is really interesting.

If this thing takes off I'd like to see Nintendo come up with a thing where you could take an in game snapshot of a character or a mii and send it through to be 3d printed with an NFC chip.
