I'm really glad PacMan is joining the fray. With Mega Man and Sonic as the other third party characters I am really looking forward to this new smash bros game. All it needs is the return of Mr Game and Watch and I might be tempted to call this character line up perfect.
As for getting third party characters into the Amiibo line up I don't see why being non nintendo absolutely precludes them from being in there. If an acceptable royalty could be negotiated with the rights holder then why wouldn't Sega, Capcom and Bandai Namco want to get a little extra cash off heritage characters that are no longer big sellers in their own right (that they used to be).
here some of my hopes for this. First I hope that these figurines are like the assist trophies in smash bros. where they cover all Nintendo owned characters. I don't want them releasing a separate pokemon line even though there are nearly a trillion individual pokemon by now. I say release a figurine for each individual pokemon if you can or must Nintendo but stick to that thing where figurines will be able to work with multiple games. I hope they can be creative about it rather than make their in game application a simple virtual collection, things like unlock new characters or scanning them in does other unexpected things like unlock hidden areas or opens up new different possibilities.
Nintendo needs to sort it's poopoodoodoocacapoopiedoodledoo out with online content. There's no point in trying to get people to pay for Mario 3 over and over again if they can just use another form of emulation to play it, like one that is freely available. The issue here is trust, we the game playing public need to have trust in the providers of this online distributed content. Having a unified account that allows you to play games across different platforms is more trustworthy than a console specific account. Please watch the profanity — TBD
I'm glad they've decided to use cel shading for this one, it looks promising. I just wish for the western releases they had a subtitle option because I am a OP fan but I don't watch the dubbed version and I fear it may be a little jarring to have to get used to the american voices to play this game.
Hopefully they manage to get the action RPG gameplay to be fun whilst staying true to the source material.
@64supermario fair enough, I haven't played it but I've heard it 's a reworking of a 1989 gameboy title Castlevania: The Adventure. I wouldn't mind checking it out, hopefully it's possible to get wiiware games on wii u. Still that particular game is the exception.
and about 3rd party games not selling well on nintendo consoles, I think it goes back to the days of N64 when PS1 seemed to get all the best 3rd party games and N64 got some really average ones. Since then it would seem that people get a nintendo console primarily for nintendo games and playstation/xbox for other games. As for lacklustre sales on nintendo's handhelds, that is a complete mystery. I would've thought a brand like castlevania would've sold well if the games got decent reviews.
meh there hasn't been a simple but great castlevania since super castlvania IV. Games like Sonic, Castlevania and Megaman just don't seem to translate well to 3D. If Konami gets Igarashi to oversee castlevania V maybe I'll get hyped about a new castlevania game.
I'm surprised there isn't more luv for Bayonetta 2. It does look very promising, I haven't played the first one but I would consider getting it simply because it offers something a little different on WiiU. As always I will wait for the reviews and never pre-order. If game developers want my hard earned cash they will have to make good on their promises.
personally I think the WiiU would be a great home for HD dreamcast classics like Shenmue. As for why Sega have left so many Ip's from that era gather dust over the last few years, I have a theory. It was a result of a shift to tap into the tastes of western gamers, a re-evaluation of what could be considered global appeal. Before the sales success of the xbox 360 and call of duty 4 Japanese developers could more or less take the west for granted as the dominant console had been a japanese one since the mid eighties. So a publisher like Sega could simply make games the way they wanted and the west could have the games they would feel are worth releasing there. Even after Sega buried the dreamcast and went third party they did the logical thing and brought their current ip's over to the other consoles. While they weren't all multi-million sellers like virtua fighter 4 on PS2 was, it was a strategy that more or less worked. And then Sony slipped up allowing microsoft to gain some ground and around 2007 COD4 became a smash hit and everybody took notice. Another factor that plays into this is the rising cost of developing a AAA game, which means developers and publishers can't take any risks now. So in a market where the race is on to create the next COD4 or the next GTA or the next (insert franchise that sells millions on the name alone) nobody wants to take a chance at putting out something that might be well made and worth playing but is ignored by the majority of players. It saddens me that today the stakes are so high that a game being a cult hit or a hidden gem rather than a smash could be the difference between a company going bankrupt or surviving. So it is that I believe Sega is worried that not enough people will buy something such as Panzer Dragoon U, or Shenmue 3 or Jet Set Radio U. Sadly it seems the only franchise they are willing to persist with is Sonic even though it's inherently a the type of game that works best in 2D. . . . . and that is my 2 cents.
My thoughts on the aesthetics of this custom NES - it's totally rad. It's well outside my price range. unless I became a billionare then I would only buy a custom console if it was at a reasonable price and if I thought it might appreciate if value.
@QuickSilver88 to have it set up like that would be good. Nintendo might need a really high bandwith Wireless connection but Ninty could pull it off. I would like to think that getting a WiiU will be a vote of confidence in them to make the dream of convergence finally happen. For me it really feels like it's gonna happen in the next gen, the WiiU gamepad and the 3ds are just asking to be merged.
Congratulations to Nintendo they have certainly earned this award.
I had a thought while scrolling thru the comments section. If their next console is both the new 3ds and the new WiiU then they could make all their new games available digitally but do it in a non douchey way. Such as with an experimental new game type they could put out demos and if the fan feedback is positive they could make a few stages and sell them digitally at a low price. And then for extra levels developed system owners could purchase them as they become available. Could be good avant garde indie folks who'd like a crack at the big time.
I think we can all agree that the WiiU hasn't been as successful as it could've been. There are many different reasons that have been speculated. I think it comes down to two things. It hasn't been marketed ideally, in a way continuing with the wii branding may have worked against it as initially people weren't sure if the WiiU was an addon or a peripheral as Nintendo focussed on the gamepad. Which is ironic given that as yet there hasn't been a mind blowing, major killer app that demonstrates what the gamepad can really do, something that makes it indispensable and makes people feel bad for doubting it's worth in the first place. I'm not saying it hasn't been used creatively, I'm saying there hasn't been a game that has used it to the extent that it redefines how we play games. There is still time as long as Nintendo continues to support the WiiU.
It looks like the direction Nintendo are heading is full convergence of handheld and console games. At best it could mean that the big N's next machine could replace the WiiU and 3DS in one fell swoop. Being able to leverage the dominance of the hand held market into the living room would seem to be the holy grail for Nintendo in a quest that began as early as the late nineties with the gameboy transfer pak for N64, and then into the GBA gamecube link. I don't think Nintendo merged their hardware divisions just for s***s and giggles. It would make sense for them to do it now, so early in the lifespan of the WiiU to allow them plenty of time to work thru the issues and plan something brilliant. And I think next gen would be a good time to drop the Wii branding, after Wii U it will have run it's course.
I kinda think that aussie pirate is a bit of a jerk for ripping NSMB and uploading it when Nintendo decided to release it here a week before other western countries. I'm not some anti piracy purist, but to pirate it as soon as it's released is a little distasteful. Games cost money to make and the biggest returns are made in those first few weeks of a games release so from that point of view the big N was right to sue the pants off him. Also I doubt Nintendo will do nice things for Australia now that this guy has reinforced the island of convicts stereotype. Anyway it was nice of Nintendo to show him that they still value him as a customer and I think it was a subtle reminder that if he tries that poopoo again they know where to find him. Please watch the language — TBD

J/K this example is pretty minor and kinda makes sense, esp. the age thing. There are much more horrendous examples of censorship out there.
