Last Friday Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was finally released in Japan, and to no surprise it's taken the top spot in this week's Japanese charts courtesy of Media Create. Although the numbers aren't as grand as for the launch of the 3DS version, there are only around two million Wii U owners in Japan, meaning that ten percent of those with the console picked up a physical copy; that tops the 3DS version's launch attach rate.
Elsewhere we can see that Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire are still holding true with over 150,000 sales, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker alongside Mario Kart 8 still refuse to be shaken from the charts. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS also remain in the top ten.

The Wii U has had a healthy rise in sales, nearly doubling last week's 12,000, leaving it as the best selling home console for last week. The New 3DS LL dominates as usual, and sees a healthy increase alongside its smaller brother. Strangely, the original 3DS system — whose sales have been overshadowed by its New and/or LL counterparts — takes second place, with roughly double the sales compared to last week. It's possible that they're being sold off at a discounted price to pave the way for the New 3DS models to completely overhaul the originals.
We're expecting some spikes in sales for all systems as the year draws to a close, if last year's sales are anything to go by, so we may be seeing some tremendous increases in the coming weeks.
See the charts for yourself, last week's sales are in brackets.
1. New 3DS LL – 63,714 (48,738)
2. 3DS – 38,846 (19,722)
3. New 3DS – 25,541 (22,875)
4. Wii U – 24,469 (12,496)
5. PlayStation Vita – 22,355 (27,935)
6. 3DS LL – 17,319 (15,182)
7. PlayStation 4 – 15,971 (13,489)
8. PlayStation 3 – 5,679 (5,360)
9. PlayStation Vita TV – 986 (1,285)
10. Xbox One – 790 (1,237)
11. Xbox 360 – 189 (108)
12. PSP – 8 (18)

now only if the Wii u sales will remain that high.
I was expecting a tiny bit higher. MK8 did 350k in its first week and the userbase is a little higher now, but certainly far from a disappointment. Console increase is the same as MK8, but... it's so december now, and console sales go up in December by huge margins. Wii U did 45k the same week last year, and that was without any new releases so I imagine Nintendo would be quite disappointed with that hardware number.
Next 3 weeks will be interesting from a sales perspective
Still not bad. Smash has to be well over a million already and with 3 to 4 weeks left of holiday sales, the user base should see significant jump in Japan and world wide
CoD is beating Captain Toad... That's extremely sad to see
Its interesting looking back on last year's article and people thinking 100k sales was only alright progress when now 25k sales is the best the Wii U has seen since MK8 launched. I hope Christmas does push it a bit further this year but it seems impossible to match last year. And what is going on with those old 3DS sales? It's doubled like two weeks in a row now! Who even still wants them?
@Grumblevolcano
Call of Duty is a far bigger franchise. One that routinely sells over 20 million copies per release. Granted, Toad is by extension a piece of the Mario franchise (the highest selling franchise), but as a stand-alone, I'm not surprised to see the game defeated by something like Call of Duty.
@Grumblevolcano
Keep in mind that CoD is a new game, and technically only the PS3 version is beating it, and of course that has a bigger userbase.
Again, I am happy to see the Cap'n still in the top 20. It may be one of Nintendo's evergreen titles.
'PSP – 8 (18)'
When does it get officially retired?
It did as of June 2014.
EDIT: @cornishlee
Good for them i guess?
@Peach64 see your point with that. I guess the Mario kart franchise has ALLOT more pull than smash which, in the most part, appeals to the type of consumer that already had a Wii u. Mk8 is clearly way more of a system seller!!
There are no huge numbers this week which leads me to believe that "Holiday Sales" aren't in full swing in Japan yet. Year over year the numbers this week for Wii U are way down from last holiday 48k to 24k but that could all change next week? I guess we wait and see
Those numbers are depressing for Smash Wii U. Should of sold more and only 24k Wii U's sold is also a big let down.
Good numbers for Nintendo, clearly on the rise.
@Grumblevolcano that's only the first week of COD though. Overall, Toad is selling more.
I'm confused, there is an earlier article on NL stating that four 3DS games (smash, yokai, pokemon, monster) have sold over 2 million copies each in Japan, but on this list two of them are still below 2 million in lifetime sales.
Do these numbers not include digital download?
@Oaf7724 these numbers are physical cart/disk sales only. No downloads
I'm honestly surprised Smash Wii U didn't bomb in Japan.
It still too early to confirm if this game saved or not wii u...
Maybe even the incompetent wastes of space masquerading as NoE's 'Marketing team' may even twig from this that if they promoted Smash Bros (and other games) for the WiiU there might actually be some console sales from it.
P.S. promotion excludes the flowcharts they bash out that are meaningless to new gamers and patronising to established gamers.
I expected better than this, oh well.
I want to see pics from all eight people that bought a PSP.
Go Mario Kart! I knew you were a better seller than Smash. Now let Sakurai make the next MK so we get the most comprehensive MK ever. 32 tracks for £50 is a little bit steep! I think The 30 Million people who bought MKW would have earned MK8 better marketing and development budgets.
I was hoping for 300K this week, but still, it's a solid start. Hardware wise, I believe this is pretty close to what MK8 had, but we are closer to the Holidays. I guess I'm trying to say, it could have been better, but we'll take it.
IT BEGINS
I love that Mario Kart 8 has been brought by ~37% of Japanese Wii U owners!!
Go Nintendo! o/
Oh yeah, that's true. PLEASE RELEASE ATTACK ON TITAN THE LAST WINGS OF MANKIND ALREADY!!!
Does the MK8 number 19,244 include the copies in the MK8 Wii U bundle that just released in Japan?
Wii U had 3 Top 20 games, that doesn't happen very often, and 3DS had 9, so Nintendo consoles had 60% of the Top 20 list, not too shabby.
If you add up the hardware it's roughly 167k Nintendo to 47k Sony and Microsoft combined (which kind of means Sony), that's over 75%. I'd consider that a pretty good week for Nintendo overall, regardless of where we might like the hardware numbers to be.
So... does that mean roughly 35% of Wii U owners in Japan have Mario Kart 8? That's some pretty good sales, then. Now, if they could just sell more Wii Us...
I'm surprized Xbone sold at all as Microsoft has failed every generation to make a dent in Japan. And PSP sold a whopping 8 units, LOL!
I bet Japanese Xbox One sales are all US military stationed in the country lol...
Which means the ACTUAL Japanese X1 user base is probably just a small percentage of what we think it is.
Japanese Xbox gamers... The most hardcore gamer there ever was
Just like the Wii, it looks like the Wii Us swan song will be the Legend of Zelda (which could be the case for the 3DS in NA this March if Majora's Mask tanks).
Profits are up due solely to amiibo and Nintendo's worst selling console looks to live up to it's rep.
I want the thing to succeed, I just know it won't. Not the way Nintendo's doing it.
home systems on the whole are on massive decline year on year in japan ,comparing these sales with last years is not an easy comparison,it is competing well with the ps4 at least though which is nice
I luv how every time I read the comments section there are always pessimists who seem to expect the wiiU to suddenly start selling like the wii or the PS2 and anything less than that is complete failure. No matter what the good news reported they always see the glass as half empty LoL.
That isn't very much. Especially if you consider not many Japanese people (or people in generaly) have a Wii u.
Face it: Super smash wii u may have had a good start in America, but in the end it still doesn't do much for the Wii u. The Wii u stays at the bottom of the well, worldwide!
