We still haven't got enough of Smash Bros. yet, but playing the game relentlessly day after day has had us hankering for revisiting old fighting games. Then, a crazy thought entered our brains — what if the cheesy Smash Bros. announcer was replaced with those of other famous brawlers?
The result of this incredibly strange train of thought is this video. It is both incredibly stupid but strangely amusing, and we refuse to apologise for that.
As always, please subscribe to our channel for more awesome videos, most of them not being as downright odd as this one.

Well, that was different
I'm surprised none of those KOs was "Toasty!" worthy.
I already get a little upset when I lose consecutive very hard and intense matches in master order and it says "failure" twice. I'll be pissed if it said "you suck" instead
@BLPs This is a fan site as well as a place to get news, reviews, features and opinion. Sorry we're not the New York Times, but we're about Nintendo culture and entertainment as all as Nintendo journalism, and that means from time to time, we like to blow off steam and have a little fun.
@BLPs This site has always been more of a blog than a die hard news site.
BUT if the NL staff brings news, they are the best at doing it. Unbiased, no drama, not afraid of letting people comment on the article.
Im glad that NL isnt just about the news. All the whacky side stuff makes this site unique, fun and entertaining.
If you just want to get cold, hard news, why not just subscribe to Nintendos own news feed ?
^^^^ TOLD
Also, no announcer from Street Fighter II? :<
@ultraraichu Fitting a ''Toasty!'' in there would've been great. And yeah, seeing the screen say ''FAILURE'' just feels like a slap to the face.
@BLPs exactly as @Damo said. I was hired by NintendoLife to create a wide variety of video content for the site - Be it informative, or on the silly side. I have a firm belief that games should be above all, fun and should not be treated seriously, unless that is the intention of the game in question. It saddens me that many don't share this outlook.
@Damo it's all about the fun, keep it up I love this place, it's Nintendo through and through, you guys get it
The announcer from KI should only say UUUUULLLLLLLTTTTTTTTRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAA when Link, Toon Link, Ike, Robin, Greninja, mii brawler (and anyone else that has a multiple hit smash) uses their final smash, they do a lot of hits to make a ultra.
Dat last announcer tho.
These would get very annoying very quickly!
@BLPs What are you even talking about? First you have a jab at the reporter and then you give us your life story. No one cares for your negativity and then sob story lol. The video was fun. Quite simple really. Maybe think for more than two seconds before you jibe in with your ridiculous comments.
OT: I think I can comfortably say that i'm happy Nintendo didn't go with any of these other options haha
I never noticed how terrible the announcers from Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct are. And SF3A and FF announcers are way too chatty over nothing. All these choices are funny for this video, but annoying for the game.
But why didn't you bring in announcers from Guilty Gear ("Here comes DAREDEVIL!" for new challenger screen, "DESTROYED!" for KO through Ultra Smash)? Or if you wanted to limit yourself to fighters on Nintendo consoles, BlazBlue or King of Fighters! Some announcers who wouldn't sound annoying after a mere minute!
If Smash had the "narrator" of Battleblock Theater...oh dear.
I want my Smash with the Bastion narrator.
That was amazing, though I prefer the voice of Xander Mobus.
just no
So thankful that Nintendo didn't use the last announcer, oh my god lol
@Kaze_Memaryu What do you mean by annoying? Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct had the best announcer of any fighting game. Their voice actually makes the matches more exciting and less boring. Guilty Gear had terrible announcer, it's like they can't find a human dubber so they just use a robot voice for the announcer instead. Well all of them except Guilty Gear XX but that announcer is boring as heck with hardly any encouragement at all, if it weren't for all the great metal soundtracks in GGXX, matches for that game would be super boring.
What about the announcer from Capcom vs. SNK 2?
Whenever I hear the announcer from Street Fighter Alpha 3, I think of this.
BLUE TEAM PENTA KILL!!!!
Hey, you can do 8-players, so it can happen!
Lol so good!! I feel like playing killer instinct now. UUULLLLTTRRAAAA COMMMMMMBBO!!
Well then
-50 points for no HADOUKEN
of all the street fighter games you guys had to choose the announcer from my favourite SF game. Nice work NL. I was totally expecting you guys to use the announcer from SF IV so I was pleasantly surprised.
"Finish him!"
Haha, nice video! Next time don't have the "What if.." between every section though.
On a side note, those CPU's can be so stupid some times.
I wish Smash would have a little more realistic AI.
@retro_player_22 The Mortal Kombat announcer sounds like he's half asleep, and the Killer Instinct one overdoes pretty much everything, especially combos, as if he was some kind of theme park voice reject. Guilty Gear XX and Xrd have announcers that hit the middle ground between excitement and announcement, without becoming too centric or loud, while Overture had a robotic female voice to carry the focus on the cold hard tactical requirements.
Also, yes, the Killer Instinct announcer does improve the atmosphere, because the game is just too boring without one, but Mortal Kombat could use someone less monotone, since that sounds like he just doesn't care.
@Kaze_Memaryu Just so ya know fighting games are meant to be loud and it's the announcer's job to make the match calling exciting, Guilty Gear (both XX and Xrd) announcer doesn't sound like he's excited to call the match. Shao Kahn in both MKII, MK3, and Ultimate MK3 did a great job in calling matches. He gave credit to the victor who won, gave encouragement to the fighter who dominate, and his countless mockery makes the final boss match in the game challenging and exciting.
He's the reason arcade gamers play the Mortal Kombat game so that they call get to him and shut him up (a feat that I tend to had difficulty in accomplishing back then due to his two badass dogs Kintaro and Motaro we had to fight before him). That's the best part about playing the Mortal Kombat game, you not only get annoy by the announcer, you got the chance to fight him and shut him up.
This sucked. Marvel vs Capcom 3 would of been slightly better.
If those were announcers... I wouldn't buy the game.... That was just painful.. Please don't EVER do that again
What was going on with Falco in the RBFF segment?
@KingMike But the announcer doesn't say that
@Kaze_Memaryu Pit Vs. Dark Pit.
Heaven or Hell
Lets Rock !
@BLPs Please dial back the arrogance.
If this video teaches us anything, it's that fighting games are by definition repetitive, and the more times you hear either Mr Razorblades voice or Mr Cool Home Shopping Network say the same thing AGAIN, the more likely you are to go back to playing pong.
Use your imagination during the copious silent parts of the video!
Why did each announcer have a full 10 second long intro? It totally threw off the pacing, and made the video incredibly boring.
@retro_player_22 What? I think you're mixing up something here. Fighters aren't supposed to be loud, since audio feedback can be just as important in a good fighting game as the visual feedback. When you hear the announcer shout "COUNTER", that's your cue to whack your enemy even harder, since counters generally increase hitstun. But with overly loud announcer voices, that can be very difficult to hear. Announcers that go on for too long or too loud miss their purpose of pointing out crucial information that is sometimes hard to notice instead of needlessly singing praises.
@Einherjar HERE COMES DAREDEVIL! (Ganondorf amiibo activated!)
@Kaze_Memaryu Geeze, im so pumped for GG Xrd :3
@Omarpixel9 I Agree the Battle Block Theater Narrator would be... "HOLD ON TO YOU'R PANTS"
@Kaze_Memaryu I guess we both had different taste with announcer when it comes to fighting games. I too am also looking forward to Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- too but I'll probably get the PS3 version since I don't have a PS4 yet.
@AshFoxX
What?!!
I love it!
Can't wait to see more crazy videos.
