Shigeru Miyamoto Confirms Playable Star Fox for E3, a Future for F-Zero and More

In other words, there's no F-Zero in the works right now and I should not expect to be surprised by one at E3 this year.

That's stupid and doesn't make sense. The ugly gamepad has 2 sticks and 12 buttons and giroscopes which are not necessary. Seems like a dumb condescending excuse to not make one.

@minotaurgamer The Gamepad doesn't have analog triggers, that could be essentially the "problem". The only true fix to that would be to increase production of the GC adapter (which should happen anyway)

I am excited about starfox. Between that and Metroid, I myself have been thinking of Awesome ways to use the game pad for those games. As far as F Zero, it's far too overrated of a game and it has been since the SNES days. Captain Falcons appearance in the smash franchise is awesome but it ends there. They need to avoid wasting energy and resources in making any more and focus on new IP or Kid Icarus or metroid for the wii u. Same goes for pikmin and animal crossing, just stop making them and bring out the big guns. ZELDA AND STARFOX IN 2015 OH Yeah!!! plus splatoon can't hurt lol

@Grumblevolcano Analogue triggers were not needed for F-Zero before. Sure, you can play GX with them if you tune the controls, but it's fine without them really, I prefer the A button to throttle (and it's the standard actually).

This is great news. F Zero is actually under consideration now rather than being a "will never happen" game.

Too bad nobody will buy the next F Zero. Whenever it does come, I will certainly relish it as it will most likely be the last one due to lack of sales.

And I hate to say it, but I've got a feeling the same thing is going to happen to Star Fox too. All that griping for years on end "Give us Star Fox or F-Zero". Then when it comes nobody will buy it. Which may ruin our chances of F Zero, once Nintendo sees fans like to write checks with their mouths they can't cash.

Perhaps they could just produce a digital version of F-Zero (I like it quite a bit, though not more than Mario Kart) and cut some of their costs (shipping, disc production, etc) in that manner while still making it available to those that want it at an affordable price. A win-win perhaps, with DLC there to help generate more revenue and more people logging into the e-shop.

@NaturalGus Are you serious right now? F-Zero overrated, yet Metroid and Zelda are OK? There hasn't been a proper F-Zero game in nearly a decade, so I don't see how it could possibly be overrated, and his inclusion in Smash is because he's a Nintendo character.

We're going to be waiting a while for F-Zero. Ah well. At least they're actually considering it, as opposed to it most likely never going to happen.

@JaxonH Right. Smh if these games don't do well Nintendo will go back to doing different games for the same IPs over and over (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon). For the newer generation that's the only games Nintendo will be known for.
But I think this will sale a little less than Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze numbers or maybe around Pikmin 3 numbers. If it manages to sell over a million I think it'll be the Kid Icarus: Uprising type of success.

@Samurai_Goroh I always felt turning was too rigid in the other games whereas in GX you could change how hard you turn a corner dependent on how hard you pressed a trigger.

Since his E3 demo games, we know that Miyamoto is fully immersed into "weird, unusual and unique ways to play games"
What this says to me is, that he might have a concept of how to "revolutionize" F-Zero, but doesnt have the right tools for it yet.
That, coupled with Nintendos policy of not announcing games untill they are 100% greenlit, it coul mean basically anything, from "might happen in a few gens" to "may not speak of it yet, its not finished"

An idea: A table mounted holder for the gamepad. The gamepads back even has a little screw thread.
But instead of one dimensional turning, the mount could also be able to be pushed and pulled, so that you can adjust your racer during jumps.

That way, such a thing wont cost hundrets of dollars and will add quite a bit to the gameplay. That said, it would also need the long planned update to support a second gamepad.

As for acceleration and braking, why not be cracy and use the ballance board ? That way, it will finally have a use outside of some minigames and due to its pretty accurate pressure calculations, would be quite fitting.
And even more crazy: Pedals to mount onto the ballance board !

In theory, it will cut costs immensly compared to other racing wheel combos, IF you own the board that is.

But oh well, im quite happy that its back on the consideration table. Maybe they realised what a gem it is that they have never properly used.

Adendum (not for the faint of heart, meaning the purists):
How about a somewhat crossover with StarFox ? Both take place in the same universe. Have the vehicles be able to turn into full flight mode for certain parts of the track, ala Sonic Allstars. Not only would it mak esense lore wise (considering the G-Defuser technology also poweres the Arwings) it would also be a pretty nice experience, having a high speed obstacle course to fly through.

I'm guessing the "right controller" is a subtle hint that they'll do it next console with that new screen technology they're developing. Still a poor excuse IMHO.

They need to "wait" for some kind of different controller or interface before making a new F-Zero? No. No they don't. You just make it control like any other racing game, using buttons on the controller.

If they'd make two fewer Mario-themed games per year, that'd free up enough developers to make another F-Zero right now.

The F-Zero comment is not an excuse. Like Star Fox they just don't have a big idea to make a sequel that could offer anything new. The GamePad allows them to take a new look at StarFox and give the franchise a much needed shot in the arm. The GamePad wouldn't offer any extra value to a F-Zero title and it's clear Nintendo doesn't want to make just another racing game.

I'm all for innovation and if a franchise for whatever reason doesn't fit, then don't use it. This makes a ton of sense when it comes to an IP that hasn't sold all that well. I just wish Nintendo would take an innovative approach to more games so they'd feel less samey (cough, Mario Kart, NSMB, cough).

Well, looks like the next F-Zero will become just as highly demanded as to remake Majoras Mask. Nice to here about Star Fox but I just hope it doesn't end up mediocre. The cinematic/gameplay sounds interesting between screen and gamepad.

I want F-Zero so much. But if Miyamoto waters it down, then no thanks. I don't want any gimmicks or controller shenanigans. The GC controller worked perfectly for GX, there's no reason to change that.
F-Zero must be precise and fast.

If Nintendo was to make a new F-Zero game for current consoles their best way to guard against the possibility of high demand but low sales could be to crank out an HD remake of F-Zero GX but with new tracks and support for the GCN controller adapter. After being absent for the better part of a decade fans might be happy to buy an F-Zero game that is at once familiar but with new content rather than go to the expense of creating a new game engine from scratch. Even reskinning Mario Kart 8 into nuthin' but anti-gravity tracks would probably be a lot of work.

They should put GX on the eShop with online play to generate interest and hype within the series before the new Wii U game comes out.

I've seen it. Time and again. Fans say they want something (ie new IP, then new IP comes and don't sell, or 3rd party AAA, then AAA games come and don't sell, or lesser known IP, well, you get the idea).

I'll be the first to pre order. Like Bayonetta 2 and W101, I may even buy 2 copies. If this game doesn't sell, it won't be on my end, of that I can assure you.

@potamus24 yes i am serious. And I am aware of the reason he was in Smash, and quite happy about his inclusion. But the definition of overrated is to have received a good rating without deserving it, so yes f zero is overrated and yes metroid and zelda are great. Even at their worst, both have been better than f zeros best. While I can agree that the game hasn't gotten a proper treatment while the others have, I still can't see why people actually overhype the franchise so much. F zero at its absolute best moments is just plain good. Not great. Not by a long shot. People just love to love it. That's good and all but let's not turn a blind eye.

The thing some people may of forgotten is that Metroid skipped the N64 due to being unable to make the game work with the controller. It could be the same with F-zero's case. I am glad Nintendo is mending bridges with the youtube gaming video scene.

Animal Crossing New Leaf has sold more than 7 million copies, which is on par with some Mario games. That's a pretty big gun if you ask me. A wise businessman would expand on casual gaming opportunities like Animal Crossing and Tomadachi Life.

You say that they shouldn't waste resources on things like Pikmin, but claim that Kid Icarus is not?? Both are niche titles with a limited amount of games.

Keep in mind that Wind Waker was a great success, but they also gave that away for free with MK8.

Pikmin 3 was the very reason I bought a Wii U. I'm sorry if that made your head explode, but it's true. I'd suggest taking some deep breaths. Yes, there are some of us that actually like Pikmin, and it's done decent business. Is it a blockbuster? No, but I'd hate to have a gaming world without it. I call bull on the fact you believe it is a waste of resources.

Those Pikmin short films must really irk your soul.

So taking people off of the teams that work on Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong, or Kirby is not the answer given those series sell.

Who should develop a new F-Zero is Sega who did a great job with GX, although for some reason Miyamoto hates that game so we'll likely never see Sega involved with the series ever again.

Actually I don't think Miyamoto said that about the F-Zero-Controller without at least having an idea already.
I mean, think about it! My first reaction also was something like "what the hell, why would you need a special controller for F-Zero?"
I seriously can't imagine one. But then again, exactly this convinces me that Miyamoto has some particular controller design in mind. Why else would he say that? Why else is it, that no one of us can imagine a controller that would enhance the F-Zero experience, while Miyamoto considers it as a (at least) possible option?

So my bet is that there will be an F-Zero (about time, anyway) as one of the launch titles of the next console!

I'm definitely excited to hear Miyamoto-san even consider an F-Zero title — but no matter how bad the GamePad could be for it, that shouldn't keep it from happening.

After all, if they can make an F-Zero for the N64 and its controller, why can't they make one with the GamePad in mind?

@Quorthon But that would be a "safe sequel" to F-Zero. Safe sequels are something that you have made very clear that you are very much against in past comments. It's quite clear that Miyamoto is refusing to make a safe sequel just to appease the fans' thirst for a new game.

You're right. According to VGChartz, each F-Zero game sold less and less. People pretend F-Zero is a popular Nintendo franchise, but it's not.

The F-Zero content in the MK8 DLC is a good start, but I'd like to see an HD remake of the GC F-Zero as someone suggested already. Depending on sales of the remake, then they can decide on a new F-Zero.

The controller excuse for F-Zero is pretty lame. But i am excited for Star Fox!

Plus NSMBU was only made because it was the only thing they could have out in time for the Wii U's launch due to most of their resources being focused on saving a certain 3D handheld. NSMBU took 6 months to develop tops, and they admit that.

I really dislike this fascination Nintendo have with trying to come up with new ways to control stuff when it's just not needed. Forget doing gimmicks with your hardware, and just make it about the software like you used to. Apart from analog triggers, the Pro controller is an almost perfect gaming pad.

F-zero is more likely to come to the 'New 3DS' this year, would sell more there and the 3ds needs a bigger line up this year so....

Also, Metroid Prime Trilogy on the 'New 3DS' this year please, with a brand new Metroid for the WiiU in 2016

I'm not convinced it would sell very well. I think you can get the wrong idea about what does and doesn't sell by hanging around a Nintendo fansite. I mean, if everybody who has expressed interest in a new Fzero game on this site in the past 12 months bought a hypothetical, new Fzero game, we would buy what, 200 copies? Possibly less? That being said, there may be a market for a good-looking, high definition, futuristic racing game if it is marketed as being a cool, fast racing game to Mario Kart's goofy, multiplayer fun. Some realistic racing games on other systems are quite popular. If a new F-Zero had tight, satisfying controls and good marketing, it might sell. It is a risk for Nintendo to put much into it. The two F-Zero games I've played make me bounce around like a pinball until I go play Mario Kart. >:-/

On a side note, it is nice to see Nintendo working with popular Youtube channels. There are multiple games I have purchased after watching Chuggaaconroy play them.

@Peach64 I think that's why the reaction to the new Star Fox isn't as great as it could be. Many people I know are excited about a new game finally coming out, but are less than warm to it's motion controls and gimmicky game play.

That's not to say the game won't end up being great, but it is a cause for concern that could be avoided if they just focus on a great game instead of gimmicks.

They could just do an HD remake of the Gamecube game for now. Wouldn't be too expensive and would be another game to stick on the shelves. I'm still interested to know what that HD remake Nintendo teased last year was in development for the Wii U is. Assuming it wasn't cancelled

Appearing on YouTube shows seems like a fun and friendly way to reach their audience in a surprising and exciting manner.

This might help to patch up some of the ill will they generated the previous year as well, with the announcement that YouTube videos displaying Nintendo's copyrighted material would have to forfeit their ad revenue.

Perhaps this rumoured Gamepad-lite revision is what Miyamoto-san is talking about? If they do revise the gamepad, it NEEDS analogue controls.
I'm not so fussed that they're not releasing an F-Zero game anytime soon, so long as they make due on their promises with Splatoon, Starfox and Zelda.

I liked f zero and enjoyed playing it I'm small doses. But it was repetitive and lacked replay value. That's just my opinion. I respect yours.

And to those who claim animal crossing is great just because it sold seven million or some odd number of copies, please remember that Justin Bieber sold millions of records and we all know he still sucks. So numbers mean very little when it comes to the actual quality of content.

@Moon Why ? The only the genre that it is beneficial for is Racing. Mario Kart never used it.

It is worse for fighting / fps or when it is just mapped to a standard action.

Gamecube controller compatibllity and Pro Controller use would be perfect for F-Zero...

Different gamers like different genres and not all genres will be as successful as others. But that doesn't mean they can't be created. The more variety on offer the better a console is. And with more variety the more potential buyers.

In the meantime that Myamoto waits for the right controller interface we should get F-Zero GX on Wii U VC.

Is the Wii U selling with it's already heavy emphasis on Mario games? No, it's not. Clearly more Mario is not the answer. A wider variety to the line-up is a much better answer if Nintendo ever wants to sell the console to anyone that isn't their small core Nintendo fanbase. Consumers outside of the core Nintendo fans are generally not interested in Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon. Hell, I'm a Nintendo fan and I have no interest in Pokemon, almost no more interest in Zelda, and struggle to care about Mario these days. But Nintendo cannot sell the Wii U just by shoveling out the exact same three franchises over and over again, occasionally broken up by a Kirby game. Mario didn't sell the Wii--Wii Sports did. Mario is the biggest-selling character in gaming history largely because his games are the most commonly packed with hardware, and because no other character appears in as many games. But Mario does not sell consoles, especially these days, and especially to anyone outside of the audience of this site (and even some of the people here).

General consumers need to see variety, which the Wii U does have to an extent this year with stuff like Splatoon, Xenoblade, and Devil's Third, but it also has three games coming out this year with Mario plastered on the cover. It doesn't matter that these Mario games are occasionally different genres, all average consumers see is the same mascot gracing the cover of too many games, and it gives an impression of there being very little variety.

Put it this way, would the Xbox One look like it has variety if there were 3~6 games every year with Master Chief on the cover? Even if they were different genres, that'd still be too many games with Master Chief front and center. By the end of 2015, the Wii U will have New Super Mario U, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Mario Party, Mario Kart 8, Mario & Sonic as the Sochi Olympics, Mario vs Donkey Kong, and for good measure, Super Smash Bros. That is 8 games on just the Wii U with Mario on the cover in fewer than three years. That's insane.

How would making a new F-Zero with existing controllers and technology be a "safe sequel?" Using existing controllers (or new ones for that matter) has nothing to do with a safe sequel. Making more and more games in the exact same franchises all the time--the MZP ilk--are the "safe" sequels.

F-Zero is a dormant, neglected franchise that has not seen a new entry since the GameCube. At no point would a new F-Zero be merely "safe" unless it was just a remake of a previous entry, when the smart thing to do would be to take what worked in F-Zero GX, continue the story, and expand upon it with the abilities of the Wii U. Hell, these kinds of futuristic racers are not common anymore, so at no point would making a new one be some kind of "safe sequel."

However, it would expand the library and variety on the Wii U (or 3DS for that matter), which is something that is necessary if Nintendo wants to better the odds in reaching beyond the core Nintendo crowd, which is probably around 90% of the Wii U market.

You either misread what I have previously written or twisted the words. I have repeatedly included F-Zero in the ever-growing list of forgotten, overlooked, and neglected franchises that is ignored so Nintendo can keep churning out games with Mario, Link, and Pikachu on the cover.

At no point would a new F-Zero be "safe." It would indeed be a risk, and like the last Fire Emblem, one Nintendo badly needs to learn to take.

I can't wait for there to be another f-zero that no one is going to buy again. I still think for their poor selling franchises that have vocal fanbases they should do smaller digital games to gauge interest and if people actually put their money where their mouth is they could expand to a full title. This would allow smaller titles to at least get an entry that might not be a cash sink for the company.

Better than where we were last year, I suppose. The fact that they're doing Star Fox has renewed my hope for F-Zero.

I think with Nintendo really being the only one supporting the Wii U in 2015 and possibly onward, they need to open up their catalog and see what they can do to add variety.
It's pretty much assumed that Metroid will happen on Wii U, it's just a question of when and who will do it (though I'd like to believe Retro is working on "Prime 4" right now and someone else is doing a 3DS game). Star Fox is in development. It's just F-Zero that's still up in the air.

GX is one of my favourite games of all time, and it still looks pretty good. Even if they did F-Zero GX HD with the content from AX included, I'd be happy.

As a few have said, this heavily suggests that F-Zero is going to be a key title on either a new console or handheld system. That's great news for F-Zero fans if they want significant attention on one of their favorite games.

It's intriguing to me as well because as cool as a new F-Zero might be I want it to feel fresh and be a new experience. There are SO many racing games after all. It should stand out.

That might not sit well with some purist fans, though, I bet.

The franchise is too much like other more popular games (wipeout) that have run their course in popularity and faded into obsolescence. It doesn't matter if it's the best or your favorite. It won't sell and Nintendo knows it. All of your talk on how past games use old controllers just fine is just reinforcing the point. You are expecting it to be old and the same. Few would care.

Nintendo doesn't hate the franchise, it just doesn't like bleeding money for a few fans who will buy the same thing over and over.

That's why this news is exciting in that Miyamoto has an idea how to reapproach it with a new, unique control method. That means great potential for the franchise to get a big push from Nintendo. Awesome news, I think.

@NintyMan More Pikmin! Also good news. I feel like that game is still scratching the surface in many ways. So much more potential. Three feels a bit like a refined remake where all the challenges outside of the main adventure were just beginning to experiment with many new ideas. In fact, they are at least half the enjoyment of the game for me.

I have a feeling the time constraints chopped the adventure content down (purple and white were probably meant to be integrated for instance).

The characters are endearing, the pikmin are awesome, it has the that theme of the harshness of nature. It really has much more it can do.

Not sure why they say F-Zero can't return just because it can't be utilize with the GamePad. I can think of 15 things you can do with F-Zero using the Wii U GamePad, I'm just not saying cuz Nintendo will probably not use them ideas anyway.

I'm sorry to call you out, but this is ignorant. Who exactly believes that Animal Crossing sucks?? You may claim it sucks, but metacritic states otherwise. I get it. It's not everyone's cup of tea as it is a casual game, but I don't understand your previous claim that it is a waste of resources. You do not speak for everyone else who likes the series. How many of them were there again? Oh right, 7 million.

It would be absurd to not tap into that audience again, so they can make more money for the titles you want, like Kid Icarus. You don't seem to understand that "quality" is a relative term. Just because it's an Animal Crossing game does not diminish it's overall value to the company, or to those who buy it.

I did lol at the Justin Beiber part however. It was an absurd comparison and has no context here whatsoever.

@ThomasBW84 exactly. He's stated before he was surprised people had such fond memories of the x and gx series, so I've got a hunch he's about to give the good old captain some much needed love.

@mudmask Agree. Much more interested in the next Metroid concept than F-Zero. I really enjoyed F-Zero GX, and would love a successor, but Metroid is intriguing, given that they have essentially finished with the Prime series and the Other M concept got mixed reviews. So the question is where do they go from here? I think the Other M gameplay could be refined and make good use of the Game Pad for the shooting mechanics (as opposed to pointing the Wii Remote at the screen, which always felt just exactly not as smooth as you'd want), they just need to drop the emo Samus and return to a more exploration/mystery vibe with a less intrusive story. Something along the lines of the Prime series would be great, and a marriage between Prime and Other M gameplay and atmosphere could be good if properly executed.

Alternatively, hand the keys to Metroid over to Platinum, and let them make Metroid into something like a much calmer, slower-paced Bayonetta-style action exploration game. Like Bayonetta 2 in the Metroid universe, with a lot more exploration and weapons obtained through discovery rather than through purchases.

Aaaaaand, now I want to play Bayonetta 2 some more.

WipEout player here, to all those that are saying "Release F-Zero now who cares about analog!", trust me, in a modern racer, you want analog. Still think there's no difference? Play WipEout HD with a controller where only the sticks are analog and see how fun it is.

@aaronsullivan But it can't possibly be less popular than WipEout, considering HD Fury only had a limited disk release otherwise it was PSN only, I haven't seen anything about 2048 since it's release, and Sony killed Studio Liverpool while they were apparently making a WipEout launch title for the PS4 ;_;

I'd say that's definite confirmation F-Zero is skipping this generation.

To be fair, if we were getting F-Zero and not starfox, people would pine for the latter. And Vice versa. At least one of them is showing up this year!

This game needs a great online multi, so much could be done. Im not accepting anything else this includes local multi only.. Get with the times we are adults too and dont have siblings and peeps that play games like we do constantly around us. You make a system that has online capabilities now for the love god use them ~
