OK there's what seems like a trillion comments here, I'm not gonna read em all so please forgive me if some of what I have to say has already been said.
This quasi announcement has generated a lot of rumblings amongst video game enthusiasts. If someone from Nintendo's upper management or marketing were to read the comments here they could easily see this working out as a hype marketing master stroke in the same league as Super Mario Bros. 3 reveal in the movie the Wizard.
And that 3DS version looks really cool. I want to see it localised as well but if we want that to happen the most we can do is lobby the western offices of square enix. Like what the developer from the Baten Kaitos games said where he urged fans who want more games in the series to contact the publisher and tell them that they would totally throw money at this. They'll probably be able to re use the translations from the PS4 port which seems overwhelmingly likely to get translated given the popularity of it in the west.
I think a western release is likely given that Square Enix needs to harness the global potential of the DQ series. It's always been a smash hit in it's native Japan but it's struggled abroad while the final fantasy series has been tremendously popular in the west since FFVII. Square Enix needs another huge bankable worldwide franchise, they have so much riding of FFXV but having a plan B makes sense as it could cover if plan A doesn't work out as hoped better yet if both succeed then they'll be so flush with cash they'd able to light up cuban cigars with hundred dollar bills should they they so desire.
It seems tech investors are rather bullish about Nintendo making games for Smart devices. I think the reason for this is that they anticipate that some or all of these smart device games will be free to start. The whole idea of these games is to give people who might not otherwise look into Nintendo games a taste to get them hooked and then for them to pay up to get access to more content. A game like Pokemon Shuffle is a good example of this even though it copies candy crush almost to the letter. I could picture Nintendo making a mobile version of Mario Kart where the player has the option to pay to unlock more courses/vehicles/characters or they could just get it on 3DS or wii U or NX (eventually). Many smart devices have tilt sensors so that coupled with Nintendo's experience of making games that utilize motion controls should stand them in good stead when making something like a racing game for devices that have so few buttons and which suffer from the use of touchscreen buttons.
wow and to think people were saying Nintendo was doomed. Even Capcom didn't get this bad. It amuses me how some critics speak of Nintendo as if they are this great evil that is deserving of every piece of misfortune that comes their way while third parties are these angels who are beyond reproach. Surely stories like this demonstrate that even in Japan the immense and ever growing pressure to have every game that is published and released be a smash hit is taking it's toll on once great publishers and their employees.
I am not the least bit surprised that the rush to high definition and the spiraling costs of developing increasingly grand games to meet the ever increasing expectations and demands of players is having a negative effect on publishers. Perhaps this is why Nintendo didn't go HD in the seventh generation and perhaps this is why Nintendo isn't keen to play the game by microsoft and sony's rules.
I wanted to splice this into my previous comment but couldn't so please forgive the double post. One of the comments I read here was a lack of focus from Nintendo on the wii U. To an extent I kind of agree with this. the problems stemming from having two completely separate development environments for portable console and home console seems to have come back to bite Nintendo. Which is why I strongly believe that with NX they will merge home and portable console into a shared space. How else could they leverage the strengths of their portable console business into their home console business? When it comes to a big install base, third party support the 3DS trumps the wii U. If as some believe the NX is a unified platform capable of playing games on the go or on a big screen at home then in theory Nintendo would have more money to spend on hardware development and marketing as it would be two for the price of one and all of their game development resources could go toward one system rather than two. Of course this is assuming the talk of NX being a third pillar doesn't mean that there'd be a long period of overlap where they're supporting 3 systems simultaneously which I imagine would strain their internal development resources unless easy porting is possible between say NX to wii U.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones who didn't buy a wii U at launch so I avoided all the disappointment that came from seeing how third parties flattered to deceive. I bought mine early last year amidst the media doom and gloom and "fusion" rumours because dang it that windwaker console bundle was irresistable. By that point I had seen the wii U at it's lowest ebb but could also see what was on the horizon and games like 3D world, MK8, SSB, Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, etc had me more interested than what PS4 and Xbone had to offer. It didn't hurt that at that stage of the game a lot of those third party ports were being cleared out at knockdown prices so I was able to determine which ones were worth my time and which ones were complete garbage. So with them I was able to bulk up my wii U library cheaply and quickly as I waited for the real games to arrive. Even the sparseness of the release of big titles wasn't an issue for me because I work and don't have as much time to play games as I used to so it's not like I'm going to finish most games over the course of a weekend. In fact atm my biggest problem isn't enough games it's more a matter of having too many games and not enough time to finish them all lol.
And then there's the issue of collectability that this article hasn't even touched on. Because of it's small user base, niche appeal and under appreciation (from the broader community) during it's lifetime the wii U has a lot of collectable potential that may be fully realised in 10 to 20 years time. Which is why I personally think that it's worth getting as many limited editions of sought after titles now before they go up in price once they're out of print - particularly if the word Zelda is in it. That Wind Waker HD game bundle is a case in point It's only been out of print for a year or so and on the second hand market it's value has already doubled, one can only guess what the asking price for a mint copy will be in ten years time.
TL;dr For me the wii U has been a great investment, haters be damned.
Back in 2001 the late Yamauchi-san is quoted as saying that microsoft for all their billions of dollars do not understand japanese tastes in video games and as such will never conquer the Japanese market. Those words still ring true to this day. In the previous console generation they even went to the extent of getting Hironobu Sakaguchi to make a JRPG exclusively for xbox 360 and still their xbox brand is still as good as mush in the minds of Japanese consumers.
a pro controller with a NGC button layout, this would be awesome for Mario Kart 8. I would totally get one. It would probably be good for Devil's Third too
well if Nintendo helped to fund it's development and had the exclusive publishing rights then they may have agreed a deal with Valhalla that to give up that exclusivity Nintendo would receive a percentage from in game content sold on PC. Without Nintendo's intervention Devils Third would be the sort of cold case to be documented by unseen 64 so they do deserve some remuneration for that loss. Announcing the PC release after E3 may have been a condition of the deal. That might be why there was zero mention of the game at E3.
If the AMD APU rumor is true then it would be bad news for the fusion speculation. Because x86 can't compete with ARM for battery life in portable devices. Not unless AMD has enough technical wizardry to get maximum performance at minimal power usage that it could be feasible for a battery powered device. I suppose they could put solar panels on there so that energy from a light source compensates, which now that I think about it would be pretty cool.
While it is unfortunate if true that NoA has lost faith in this game all hope is not lost. Firstly NoA has a more independent remit when it comes to games published compared to NoE which NoJ has on a tighter leash. So unless it's cancelled completely then it should at least see a Japanese and (maybe) European/PAL territory release. And a publisher like XSEED games could publish it in yankeeland if there's enough demand. So to all the disgruntled american wii U owners my advice is to brace for the worst but remain calm. If it gets good reviews and positive word of mouth start a petition or multiple petitions and get organised and get vocal to let publishers know that there is money to be made. NoA is really risk averse when it comes to localising games for some reason. But if it does eventually get localised like Xenoblade Chronicles did on the wii then snap up a copy poste haste as the print run will likely be very limited. Play the game and then wait and watch as it's value due to being rare goes up.
@StarDust4Ever Amen to that. Sticking with cartridges helped to motivate once loyal third parties to switch allegiances to playstation paticularly Squaresoft with FFVII. However the flipside as you've noted are way faster load times and N64 games are more collectable than playstation games (overall). In fact Nintendo's games seem to be generally more collectable than playstation games across all generations. I believe this has something to do with Nintendo's efforts to thwart software pirates - just a theory.
I'll be interested to see if the PS4/xbone ports are just sloppy or if they decide to put some effort into it. And to see how well it sells when it's been available on wii U for nearly 3 years.
Also worth noting Ubisoft didn't make this game for wii U from scratch. They were originally making it as a PS360 game and decided to repurpose it as a wii U game. Albeit a game that made good use of the gamepad and deserved to sell well, even if it was a fairly average game. At least it wasn't more than just a lazy 360 port with wii U specific bugs and missing features - the wii U's early library sure had enough of those.
Guys don't forget there was an important twist in the SNES CD story. around 1993 developers started to get fed up with the whole fiasco as it was starting to seem that there would be too many different CD game formats to make games for and they got Nintendo, Sony and Phillips to work out a new agreement that would make life easier for third parties. And they came to an agreement that would give Nintendo the licensing fees for games, Sony would get the licensing for educational software and Phillips would still get to make their $#itty CDi mario and zelda games and the three of them would work together to make the SNES CD and SNES CD games were to be compatible on CDi. However by this point Nintendo had lost interest in CD games after the poor sales of the Mega CD and CDi as well as other expensive CD consoles at the time and their Super FX chip delayed the SNES CD further because Sony and Phillips had to revise the SNES CD to make it able to work with the Super FX chip.
I think that with the benefit of hindsight Nintendo's mistake here was to prevent the SNES CD from seeing the light of day. If anything they should have allowed Sony and Philips to get the SNES into the market ASAP. If it succeeded it could have meant extra revenue as Nintendo had wrestled back their control of licensing fees from games. However if it had failed it would have likely scared Sony out of wanting to get into the home console business. Achieving that would have been hugely beneficial for Nintendo as it would have prevented the creation of their fiercest rival. And without the original playstation to disrupt the market Nintendo's banner men would not have betrayed them as they would have feared paying the iron price.
It is a grim expose and it's sad to hear about people quitting their job en masse. However as someone previously said there are two sides to every story and if the higher ups in Japan didn't think the game was fun enough they may have been right. It's logical that they wouldn't want to claim an inferior product as something they had made for fear of it diluting their brand's value. The wii had enough shovelware games in it's library, the last thing it needed was a shovelware game made by Nintendo.
And this is why I have only ever bought one VC game ever. It was a SNES fire emblem game that I got on the cheap and I still haven't got around to playing it. It's great for NIntendo that people buy VC games and I am happy for them but if I wanna play retro games I'll play them on the original hardware if I can or I'll play em on an emulator. That way I can play any NES or SNES game I want and Nintendo can release as many VC games as their human resources will allow without it impacting too much on development of new games. And with the money I save on VC games I can put that toward buying new games, everyone wins.
Sorry Yanks that ya gotta miss out due to NOA's more independent remit. It feels good to live in a PAL territory. I remember back in the day PAL territories got shafted something chronic but now we got it pretty good.
However the graphics look like they're from a mobile game. Those trees look like they're made of plastic. They gotta use the wii U's textures and other graphical capabilities more. Am gonna wait and see if they do something about that before committing to buy, ignore the comment I made 4 mins ago that I can't edit for some reason.
I am definitely getting this game. Every time Harvest Moon games increase in value once they become retro for some reason. If I had the money I'd get two copies.
Great to see Splatoon doing so well. It's great to see a new nintendo IP be such a hit. I remember the week leading up to it's release there were douchebag trolls in a FB wii U owners group that were talking about Witcher 3. Naturally they got torn a new one for breaking the rules but to do that when a new Nintendo IP was around the corner and is more worth talking about just defies belief
well, that escalated quickly. I never expected Shovel Knight to make it into this game. All the capcoms and konamis out there better watch their backs, these indie upstarts could one day surpass the giants of yesteryear.
@kobashi100
Seeing as you care so much for those other sports sim games that had ports that had sales that didn't meet the lofty expectations of their publishers, what is your theory on why they bombed as you put it?
Lets not forget they were all launch games, The wii U's install base at launch was only around 2 million, did they expect each game to sell 2 million copies on the first day? Has the size of the wii U's install base been a concern for them? Do they believe that a Nintendo console has to have an install base of over one hundred million units for their Nintendo ports to sell a million units? Could it be that because those games were already available on PS360 and PC that the majority of people who bought a wii U when it launched already owned a 360 or a PS3 didn't buy a wii U to play games they had previous versions of on other consoles?
@kobashi100 Give me one good reason why I should given that I don't play NBA 2K or madden games, have no interest in either series of game and that they have no relevance to the article that we're commenting on here. Take your strawman argument somewhere else please.
Oh EA why do you do this to yourself? FIFA 13 underperformed commercially on wii U because EA took FIFA 12 tacked on a few gamepad features and called it a day. I'm sure their justification went something along the lines of "those nintendorks will never know the difference." Turns out it doesn't matter who you are if you try to charge full price for an inferior product people wont buy it. It just makes me glad that the one non spectacular round moose EA game I own is one that I didn't even pay for (a hand me down copy of FIFA 15 on PS3). If EA put the time and effort into making a good FIFA game for wii U that took was opitmised to take full advantage of what the wii U can do I would seriously consider buying a copy but I guess EA doesn't want my money, too bad for them I guess.
I spent 55 dollars on Splatoon and I'm loving it. I haven't even got stuck into the single player campaign. Online turf battles are lots of fun. I look forward to exploring the game further. I also got the amiibo triple pack at the same time so that will add to the gameplay. So far so good.
I can totally see more cross overs happening in future DLC Starfox would seem the best choice. with Fox being a new character and an arwing kart. Pikmin or Splatoon would also be good choices for cross overs. But something I'd like to see Nintendo put in a free update more than a classic battle mode (I was never hugely into battle mode to begin with) I'd wanna be able to set the game pad screen as a rear view mirror so that I can quickly glance down at it to see what is behind me rather than press x which I find hard to do while holding down A as I end up having to slide my thumb across the A button while holding it down so that the tip of my thum can reach the X button. Meanwhile the gamepad screen goes to waste when I'm using a TV screen to view. It seems like a wasted opportunity to me as that would be a really useful utilization of the wii U's dual screen design. I mean they already give racers the option of having a map screen either on the TV screen or the gamepad screen so why not offer the same with the rear view?
Fan-freaking-tastic DLC. I've been playing non-stop since yesterday. It's been a blast playing these new courses online. I've barely scratched the surface of 200cc but it really has a big impact. I'll have to revise how I attack each course in this new class but that just adds more replayability. The only downside to all this extra content to Mario Kart 8 is that it keeps me coming back to play Mario Kart 8 over and over again which is not great for the stack of unfinished wii U games that I have as MK8 is just too good to pass up and it's almost always the game I wanna play first. Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhh first world problems.
showing that Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem has actually been in development this whole time was a highlight for me and the mario kart 8 bit at the end was the coup de gras - 200cc, hell yeah !!
@Quorthon you may feel that it would be better if Nintendo goes third party, you may even feel that it's inevitable. However I will respectfully disagree as I neither think it's inevitable or a step in the right direction. With all the cash that they have in the bank and the absence of debt their hand won't be suddenly forced like Sega's was and Sega hasn't been the same since they went third party. At first they released dreamcast-like games on sixth gen consoles but by the end of the seventh gen most of the games they were publishing were games that they got other studios to develop. And for every Bayonetta or Madworld there was a Sonic Boom or an Alien: Colonial Marines to muddy the water. You might like the idea of Nintendo games on playstation or xbox but I certainly don't if there's a risk of standards dropping the way Sega's did.
I am truly crestfallen. I was looking forward to paying full price to play an unfinished game that was rushed out the door to meet an arbitrary deadline. I guess now I'll have to wait a little longer to play a polished masterpiece that is the best it can possibly be. What do they expect me to do in the meantime, carry on with life and tackle the backlog of unfinished games I have? Totally outrageous, this flies in the face of my sense of entitlement.

damn I wish I was the first to comment so I could say to all the folks that had trouble taking that article in.
TL;DR Nintendo is partnering with a mobile games company called DeNa (I hadn't heard of them previously either) to make content specific for smart devices that will use Nintendo IP. In other words Nintendo themed games made for skrubs who are too tight to splash out on a 3DS or a wiiU to give them a taste of what they're missing out on. If it works it'll be genius.
well even if it came out on wii U I wouldn't have bought it anyway. I dunno about you guys but I didnt buy a wii U to play rockband. The nintendo discrimination from harmonix is unfortunate but not surprising
Done diddily done. That question about paying a subscription fee was a little alarming, Cripes, I'd rather not have to look elsewhere for nintendo news. Bit of a shame there wasn't a sound off box at the end as I would have liked to share my thoughts about why I dislike using the word game as a verb or adverb.

Re: Project H.A.M.M.E.R. Exposé Reveals Torrid State Of Affairs At Nintendo Software Technology
Re: We Can't Release Virtual Console Games Any Faster As It Would Impact New Development, Says Iwata
Re: Talking Point: The Mystery of Devil's Third and Its Drift Away from the Spotlight
Sorry Yanks that ya gotta miss out due to NOA's more independent remit. It feels good to live in a PAL territory. I remember back in the day PAL territories got shafted something chronic but now we got it pretty good.
Re: First Impressions: Digging Up Details on Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories
However the graphics look like they're from a mobile game. Those trees look like they're made of plastic. They gotta use the wii U's textures and other graphical capabilities more. Am gonna wait and see if they do something about that before committing to buy, ignore the comment I made 4 mins ago that I can't edit for some reason.
Re: First Impressions: Digging Up Details on Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories
I am definitely getting this game. Every time Harvest Moon games increase in value once they become retro for some reason. If I had the money I'd get two copies.
Re: The Current State Of Virtual Reality Just Isn't Fun, Says Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime
I tried occulus rift last year, it wasn't much fun, I wasn't overly impressed. It has potential but I still felt a bit of motion sickness using it.
Re: Video: These Nintendo World Championships and Super Mario Maker Highlights Should Get You Warmed Up
That was really cool. Super Mario Maker looks like another day one purchase now.
Re: Splatoon is Still Number One in Japan as Wii U Sales Increase Again
Great to see Splatoon doing so well. It's great to see a new nintendo IP be such a hit. I remember the week leading up to it's release there were douchebag trolls in a FB wii U owners group that were talking about Witcher 3. Naturally they got torn a new one for breaking the rules but to do that when a new Nintendo IP was around the corner and is more worth talking about just defies belief
Re: Sega Is Focusing On 3DS For Sonic Boom Because It Wasn't Happy With The Wii U Version
Oh no, no wii U sequel to sonic boom that I would have never bought. Now I can only play all the other worthwhile games that I own. Woe is me.
Re: Shovel Knight Digs His Way Into Bloodstained As Kickstarter Campaign Strides Towards The $4.5 Million Mark
well, that escalated quickly. I never expected Shovel Knight to make it into this game. All the capcoms and konamis out there better watch their backs, these indie upstarts could one day surpass the giants of yesteryear.
Re: Review: Art Academy: Atelier (Wii U)
I wanna get this game.
Re: No FIFA For Nintendo Fans This Year, States EA
@kobashi100
Re: No FIFA For Nintendo Fans This Year, States EA
@kobashi100 Give me one good reason why I should given that I don't play NBA 2K or madden games, have no interest in either series of game and that they have no relevance to the article that we're commenting on here. Take your strawman argument somewhere else please.
Re: No FIFA For Nintendo Fans This Year, States EA
Re: Review: Splatoon (Wii U)
I spent 55 dollars on Splatoon and I'm loving it. I haven't even got stuck into the single player campaign. Online turf battles are lots of fun. I look forward to exploring the game further. I also got the amiibo triple pack at the same time so that will add to the gameplay. So far so good.
Re: Mobile Is Konami's Future, According To President Hideki Hayakawa
The Konami I cared about is long gone. I have no feelings of loss about this, this is just the next step in Konami's fall from grace.
Re: Nintendo UK Releases Wii U Sizzle Reel and Wants to Know Your Favourite Game
Mario Kart 8 by a country mile
Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X Paid-DLC Details Emerge With Characters, Quests and Skell Unlocks
If I like the game and want more then sure I'll snap up that DLC like I did with the Mario Kart DLC
Re: Talking Point: Mario Kart 8 DLC is a Winning Formula for Nintendo, But It Can Go Further
Re: Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 2 Available to Download Right Now
Fan-freaking-tastic DLC.
Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo Direct Summary - 1st April
showing that Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem has actually been in development this whole time was a highlight for me and the mario kart 8 bit at the end was the coup de gras - 200cc, hell yeah !!
Re: Sony Hardware Takes Charge of Japanese Charts With Flurry of Releases
Re: Talking Point: The Legend of Zelda on Wii U May Benefit From a Delay, But It Leaves a Blockbuster-Sized Gap

Re: Nintendo Set To License All IP to Mobile Publisher DeNA
damn I wish I was the first to comment so I could say to all the folks that had trouble taking that article in.
TL;DR
Nintendo is partnering with a mobile games company called DeNa (I hadn't heard of them previously either) to make content specific for smart devices that will use Nintendo IP. In other words Nintendo themed games made for skrubs who are too tight to splash out on a 3DS or a wiiU to give them a taste of what they're missing out on. If it works it'll be genius.
Re: Harmonix Explains Why Rock Band 4 Isn’t Coming to Wii U, But Doesn't Rule it Out
well even if it came out on wii U I wouldn't have bought it anyway. I dunno about you guys but I didnt buy a wii U to play rockband. The nintendo discrimination from harmonix is unfortunate but not surprising

Re: Site News: A New Readership Survey Has Appeared
Done diddily done. That question about paying a subscription fee was a little alarming, Cripes, I'd rather not have to look elsewhere for nintendo news.
Bit of a shame there wasn't a sound off box at the end as I would have liked to share my thoughts about why I dislike using the word game as a verb or adverb.
Re: LastFight Looks Like The Power Stone Sequel Capcom Should Have Given Us Already
If this game came out on wiiU I would definitely wanna buy it. It looks great.
